That actually is intended to prevent little critters from gaining entry into your duct and then the dryer should the damper start to remain partially open. It’s up to the homeowner to check on its operation from the outside now and then.

Ha ha. Yes for rodent prevention. I had a similar vent (as you can see it is quite close to the ground). Mouse entered my vent (no bars) and FREAKED ME OUT to see beady little mouse eyes when I heard scratchy noise and looked inside lint trap !! Called repairman and had to dismantle the entire dryer to get him out. (he was dead by then, ug) Yep recommend using vent with rodent bars if vent is close to the ground and you live in midwest or area with snow, because mice seek warm areas in winter! that are close to the ground!
Unfortunately this gentleman does not know what he's doing. The venting is correct the screen you put inside is incorrect and dangerous and is considered a fire starter. I hope he correct his mistakes and gets the proper training he needs
Wrong. It wasn't a screen. that guard is absolutely code Compliant. Screens or cross grid patterns are not compliant . The only thing he missed was putting an exterior grade sealant around the top and two sides. Don't seal the bottom
