Windows 7's start menu design could have been an interesting default feature as a classic start menu option, just like what Microsoft did with the Windows Classic theme in Windows XP and beyond.

@@weegeenumberone2 I mean it'd probably support it eventually. Also I've been trialing another piece of software called StartsIsBack and it's really good, it's also 1 dollar cheaper than Start11. (Idk if it supports Windows 11 yet but it's also been updated since Windows 8)

If I put into perspective, All modern UI are derivative of xerox's ui from 70s. First apple adopted it then bill gates used it in windows then history followed. Modern UI is just a round trip to old UIs which were very minimal and flat as computers at the time couldn't process those 3d effects

@Chris They (and Google) keep copying all of Apple's terrible design choices by taking away choices. They're trying to create a brand not realizing that many, if not most, people don't want a computer to force its style/design on the user. The computer should reflect the user's style.

There is some configuration involved to correctly use Classic Shell / Open Shell on Windows 11. It works with both - the new taskbar as well as the classic Taskbar but with the new it doesn't hide the Windows 11 button behind it yet - wait for it to be updated, or use a square button without transparent pixels so that it completely overlays the Windows 11 Start button even with the new degraded taskbar.

Because a lot of functions (and how things work) didn't changed at all. So far taskbar as I know is just a window, with some buttons.

@@iselink To a seemingly average user, yes, it may seem like a regular window. But in reality, it's anything but. There's not _one_ property that's shared between regular windows on one hand, and the taskbar on the other, when it comes to actually developing software for Windows.

Windows 10 in my opinion had the best iteration of the start menu. If you set up the live tiles, you can click on your start button and bam-- instant access to the weekly weather forecast, Skype notifications and news highlights. It was pretty awesome in my opinion.

Personally, I never really liked the start tiles on Windows and have been using Open Shell on my PC for a number of years. For me it's a matter of the use case: On a mobile device, I would love the idea of live tiles, because it's where I casually consume content and chat. On a desktop computer used for multitasking and rigorous work, start tiles are cluttered, large and slow down the speed at which I can find and open applications, due to their distracting animations and unjustifiably large size. Hence my main ways of opening applications is via pinned apps on the taskbar (Which I can open with Win + 1/2/3/etc.) or via the search bar in the start menu.

It would be very ideal and a good idea if Microsoft made the Windows 11 Start Menu much more customizable so that you could adjust its size and appearance as you did in Windows 7 and Windows 10. That way, users would gain much better control on how each user prefers to personalize Windows 11 the way they want.

Personally I’ve been using StartIsBack for Win10 because I always felt like it gave a more accurate representation of the Win7 start bar vs Classic Shell. Also it reskins the taskbar which I don’t think Classic Shell does.

@@zank8470 Classic Shell (open shell) lets you apply a background picture on the task bar, but it doesn't skin the buttons of each window shown in the task bar. I've set mine to look like windows Vista, but the buttons remains like a vanilla windows 10 taskbar

Before I clicked on the video, I was wondering if this would be a fork of Classic Shell or Stardock. Honestly I don't mind the menu because I don't necessarily use it. Instead I head the win key, type what I'm looking for and hit enter. I've been doing that since using Windows 10 and I find it easy and fast.

Users should never even use the start menu. I just want the task bar completely gone and do tiling via i3wm like keyboard shortcuts. Makes windows a pain in the ass to use at work. The windows 11 tiling is better than 10, but until it auto tiles, I'm still avoiding windows at all costs.

YOU CAN USE OPEN SHELL WITHOUT PUTTING A CUSTOM IMAGE!!!! open up a program that supports transparency make a 50x150 image fill it with a color that has only 1 alpha transparency (so barely visible) save it as png apply it as your custom start button it will now work like it should

I’ve been using Start10 since windows 7 was no longer supported and I was forced to update. Bought it for each one of my computers. The modern theme option in the settings is a beautiful blend between 7 and 8/10. I will definitely be purchasing Start11 when it comes time to update.

I really don't understand people's obsession with Win7's start menu. I didn't use it a ton at the time because I was young and only used it on school pc's, but it seems like it's not much of an improvement over Win11's start menu. I want Win10's start menu where you could add all the apps, folders, or files you wanted and create groups and folders of those on your start menu.

I'm so glad Stardock continues to bring us the classic looking operating system elements. I just got the Start11, and WindowBlinds11 apps for Windows 11. I was so frustrated with the way Win11's borderless windows looked. I'm legally blind, and had a terrible time figuring out where the foreground window edges were. Windowblinds restores the nice, fat borders we had in Win7. The restoration of the Win7 style start menu with Start11 is amazing! I just wish they'd give us an authentic looking Windows XP Luna start menu, and window frames, at some point. Thanks for sharing this.

I absolutely love that in the world of Windows... You have to pay Microsoft in order to customize your desktop, and furthermore, you have to pay a _third-party company_ if you want to _actually_ customize your OS to make it yours. Whereas all the customization options are _built-in_ and _totally free_ in Linux. You don't have to pay for a damn thing... or worry about viruses, and make your desktop look like _anything_ you want! You can make KDE Plasma look like Windows 11, macOS, or something totally _unique_ . These paid-for third-party customization utilities are the epitome of how extremely Windows limits you, and forces you to bend to its constraints!

The Start Menu in Windows 11 is perfectly fine. My only gripe is the recommended section, and lack of being able to put things in groups, but otherwise, it's fine. It looks a hell of a lot better than Windows 10's Start Menu at the very least.

In the current version of Open-Shell (4.4.170), you can very easily choose a custom image and specify its size, so the issue you mention isn't a problem. Also, I haven't used Stardock software in many years, but back when I did, it was extremely buggy -- every product, every version.

This no longer works as of the new release on 7/8/21. Because of this, I reverted back to Windows 10. The new Windows 11 start menu is a deal killer for me, and I really hope they fix it.

0:40 I actually really dig it. The old Start menu design was redundant as all hell by this point and basically NEVER the actual fastest way to do something. The new design in 11 limits me to using only and more often what it's best at, rather than a subpar way to do a bunch of other things that can be done faster in other ways.

"basically NEVER the actual fastest way to do something" Thank you! I just don't understand anyone who knows anyone about computers would actually care about the Start Menu. The best way to launch a program in Windows 7-10 (probably 11, too) is to either search for it (Start, then typing) or pin it to the taskbar and use Windows key + [1-9]. That's 9 different programs immediately launchable/switchable via a two-key shortcut. I mean I can understand a nostalgia factor, but pretty much any start menu is a waste of time if you know what you want to launch (most people do).

As an admin, of a 3000 network. I'm so glad I can remove it with winget. I like open shell on windows 8 UI and server 2012 and 2016. But beyond that, the new one is fine once you get used to it. Windows 11 all you need to do is click all apps and you get a basic list. The only thing I wish is the windows 11 start menu listed all updated with most clicked apps was an option.

i hope microsoft listens to their customers and adds a thing where you can switch between not only start menu style, but the way windows looks like changing from the modern look to luna for example instead of only changing colors and wallpaper which probably will never happen

the version 9 update of start 11 is a fantastic advancement over the previous version. now replicates much of windows 10 start menu. also can place taskbar at the top of the screen, and can make the taskbar smaller than the obtrusive size in windows 11. this product is still in beta. looking forward to further refinements!

I plan on going with Start 11 since they say they've designed theirs in a way that should be immune to getting cancelled via a Microsoft update that tries to block these type of programs.

It would be nice if windows allowed you to change the skin of the start menu like for example an option that lets to choose different styles, some from older versions of windows some other completely new.
