What's your favourite starter curriculum?

I found your video through a search for curriculum "workbooks" specifically, and I feel like sitting here applauding! 👏👏🙂 First, I liked that you pointed out the fact of homeschool curriculum snobs. I find that so prevalent on social media. Then, the fact that most children aren't ready to read until 6 or older. I've found it so with my boys, and it's also something that is hard not to feel inferior about, since you hear over and over about how important early literacy is. I'm so happy when I find a level headed person. 🙂

Well thank you! I agree the social media snobs are the worst and it always makes parents worried that they aren't doing enough or using the wrong curriculum. And early reading is only so schools can teach large groups. It's a fallacy we've all be taught. Some need to unlearn that.

I’m so happy to finally have found a Canadian from Ontario. I love all your content. I wish I could find this kind of content for homeschooling high school.

Glad you enjoy it! High school is a different beast. The biggest thing you need to decide what your child's ultimate goals are...do they want an official diploma? trade school? university? and then work backwards from there.

Level one means (here in America despite MANY people assuming otherwise) it is for first graders. So it is not surprising that your daughter can't handle it. The reason why people think "level one" means it is for kindergarteners is because our schools are giving preschoolers kindergarten work. Kindergarteners given first grade work and first graders given nearly third grade work. They are doing this to compete with other countries like Korea and Japan. 80% of school kids do not really succeed academically or get high paying jobs due to this. But 90% of home schooled kids do succeed. That is because they are actually given the RIGHT LEVELS of work for them at their age.

Finding the right level is important. But also following the kids. If they are doing well, there is no reason to hole them back just because they aren't old enough. We struggle with level, because we are canadian and we have a different system, that includes 2 years of kindergarten. So a lot of level 1 american is fine for our year 2 kindergarteners. It really depends on the kids and their abilities

Love the look into these Canadian workbooks! We’re going to use the 1st grade Complete Canadian Curriculum book as a supplement this coming year. We’ve used kindergarten TinkerActive science and math this past year as fun school workbooks and absolutely loved them! My daughter asked for more TinkerActive books in other subjects after she finished them, and she doesn’t like worksheets!

Sounds great! I've never heard of TinkerActive. I'll have to look into it.

We love Brain Quest too. Do you do anything for French, as a second language? Can you recommend a French workbook? We are in Quebec 😊

Right now we are using French Smart from Canadian Curriculum, but the majority of what we do are conversational games and singing French and Canadian folk songs.

Great Question! One of the reasons I called these starter curriculum, is because many people start with these because they are so cheap and easy to get so they are popular for parents who are pulling their kids quickly. They cover all the basics. But many parents who homeschool long term often move on to more in-depth curriculum. Other programs offer more explanations, practise questions. But like I said, these start curriculums, are popular with people who are making a quick jump to homeschooling. They are also popular with parents on a budget who supplement with other things (like games, free worksheets, etc) or unschoolers who just like having some options on hand for the kids to play around with.

Hi! I'm thinking of homeschooling my children, but i think I'd like to do it in french ( it's our first language). Do you think it's possible/legal to do it ( we live in Toronto)?
