A starter guide to spotting fake and scrapper pins in Disney Pin Trading. PSA specialises in providing reference checks for Traders and Sellers worldwide in Disney Pin Trading. I went to Disneyland for the first time in August. I bought a load of pins from the shops and traded one duplicate limited edition Haunted Mansion pin at a pin booth for a hidden mickey Rango pin. The woman working must have realized the one I had received was a fake, because she hunted my boyfriend and I down and gave me my Haunted Mansion pin back. She did not say it at the time, but watching this video made me realize that it is totally a fake. The waffling pattern dies out on the bottom right side, the edges are too rigid, visible brush strokes, and the nubs on the back are smaller and lower grade than an authentic. Thank you for the video!! I had no idea what to look for. :) Very helpful!

Wow super nice of that lady! My friend and I bought some pins at Disney world magic kingdom and traded with a bunch of cast members throughout the day. Afterwards is when we realized fake pins were a thing and I ended up with 2 fakes and a real one, she needed up with 2 fakes as well. I just think there’s too many fakes circulating right now for them to be able to do something about it 😞

Ashley Salas it’s not just one thing that makes a pin a scrapper or a fake, it’s a combination of several of the things I’ve mentioned in the video. Unfortunately us pin traders have seen an unfortunate decline in the quality of the pins coming out of the parks. Sometimes you get a poor waffle, or a paint issue. But by looking at several different parts of the pin it should help you determine if your pin is real or not :)

Very cool video. I did the test and got ride of 11 scrapers from the pin section and made them into magnets and gave to friend. Took them out of circulation and at least it was not a total washout. LOL. Love this video!

Yeah its such a great idea but a bit of work. Thats my best way of getting the pins out of circulation. I also make them into a leather belt decoration for friends kids. LOL. They dont know any better. LOL.

I am solely a collector for display and not for trade. Pins cost far too much to risk swapping them for fakes, sadly. I had one pin that I wasn't bothered by that I took to a pin board but every pin I looked at was a fake! I was so looking forward to trying the trade thing, but never mind. Collection only, I guess.

I wouldn’t be disheartened by the boards - there’s an amazing online community of traders out there :) as long as your pins are bringing you joy that’s all that matters

Watch he video about quality control :) unfortunately yes some pins from the parks do have this issue, you need to look at the whole of the pins not just one part to see if it’s authentic or not but these days it’s becoming so much harder to assess :(

Thank you for this video! I know this was posted 3ish years ago, but what do you think I should do if I accidentally trade one of my real pins for a fake pin in the park? I dont want to just put it back into circulation, but I also dont want to lose a pin!

Very informative. I had no idea. I just started buying pins and almost all of mine are Disney park/resort bought. I have a few that were given to me by cast members though

At this point I'd rather just collect pressed coins from Disney. Or get special ones directly given to me by Disney, like when I've been on a cruise and they gave us one for the cruise with the year we sailed.

My experience is that the Cast Members do NOT remove the fake pins. 9 times out of 10 when I pointed out the fakes they would say, “I know. It’s sad they keep getting out there.” But that was the only response I got. Then they’d trade it to the next person.

It’s very frustrating as well how different parks have different policies. Paris these days will remove fakes from boards, but you will probably find them on lanyards. Are they supposed to remove them? Yes. Do they? No they don’t. It’s quite sad when people spend money on real pins only to trade for fakes.

It gets easier with practice :) if you are in any groups and people are asking for help. Look at the photos first then have a go at making the guess and see if the comments match what you were thinking :)

Wow I can't believe that China goes to that much detail in the back. when I heard about scrappers on Disney I figured you could just look at the back and didn't have the right stamps on it. it would be an easy spot because most Chinese pins that are mass-produced are not the best quality of course. And don't even have a stamp. Now I don't collect Disney, but I do collect anime pins and anyting that I really really want I do have an Alice in wonderland pin and a stitch PIN but they are created by fans. No mass production. In their case. I would love to pin trade of course it cost a lot of money to go to Disney parks in general and I just don't have the money to do so and this hurts because pin collecting is one of my hobbies.

GREAT info. learned a lot on how to spot a fake BUT that camera shifting.. gave me a headache watching this. I know u have to zoom adjust but unfortunately MY eyes couldn't handle THAT much adjustments

I'm not trying to be a hater or anything but I THINK that the only reason that the first lucky ears u tried out didnt stick to the magnet was bc it was heavy and the only reason that the second pin got stuck to the magnet was bc it was light.

Thanks for watching the video :) I was using rare earth magnets which are the strongest type of retail magnet available and we tested it out on several larger items before I tried it on the pins :)

It should be noted the the magnet test has been debunked and is not recommended in distinguishing a fake since it all depends on the material used. There were even cases where real pins are magnetic and where both fake and real are magnetic. yeah, some of the older ones don’t. i went to the halloween party in wdw when i was younger and received a free limited edition pin that they give you, and that one doesn’t have any waffling on the back
