I just changed the starter for a 2016 Kia Rio LX and this was a great point of reference! You have to go from the top to get at least the farther back of the two bolts, so you do need to remove the air filter box and hose. The starter was basically above, as seen here, from the oil filter, so that is a good point of reference when you are underneath the car. It took me a 2-3 hours to get this done, this was the first starter I have ever changed. The bolts can be a bit of a pain to get off. I used different sets of ratchets and sockets to get this done. I believe I used my 1/4 and 3/8 inch ratchets. The bolts I believe were 14mm, the nut for battery connection was either a 12 or 14mm, the screws for the guard for your undercarriage is a 10mm, screws for taking out the air filter box was also one of these sizes as well (I think 10mm?). I may be slightly off for which size went where, but if you have these sizes you should be good go to! Make sure to unhook your battery before taking the starter off - this is also a 10mm to loosen cables. This should give you an idea of time and tools you will need. Overall, this saved more hundreds of dollars!

Hello Jpulley this is October 2023. 5 years later since you published this video. I want to say thank you! This reference definitely helped me to gain the confidence I could do this myself. My battery was being drained by a bad starter now I can keep driving with confidence, God bless you!

Your video helped bunches, did replacement on 2016 KIA Rio LX also, you made it clear where it was, the hurdles in getting it out along with other stuff that was useful. Thanks.

Just did this, thanks for the video! Some notes: I didn't see any way to do the job while above, just no visual and too crammed against the radiator fan. Hardest part was trying to position the new starter in place and get it threaded in by myself. Unless you have the car on a lift or raised way up, it's impossible to get both hands into place while underneath. Grab a friend and have them hand thread in the starter bolts from above while you position it from underneath, was much easier than trying to do it myself. Everything else was routine. OEM starter terminal bolt was 13mm, replacement was 12mm. Single harness plug was just push style, can remove it just by pushing down on clip and pulling.

i actually do them from the top, including Sonatas, without removing the intake. It is tricky, but it can be done by feel. The key is to remove the throttle body(leaving everything attached.

The only things I think you should have really included in this video is the time it took you from start to finish and showing how you actually unscrewed the starter i.e. what kind of problems you ran into while doing it and what you did to overcome them.

Did you bench test the starter to know for sure it was the problem? My car just quit and it was struggling to crank, now won't do anything now. Battery, fuses, codes, fuel pump are all okay.
@jpulley
@jpulley Год назад
No I didn't bench test the starter. The starter would start car sometimes and sometimes it wouldn't start. The car took longer to start than it should of. My dad still has this car, there has never been a problem with the car starting anymore.

I’m having a hard time getting the bolts out; I have a ratchet and an extension with a swivel using 14mm but I just can’t seem to loosen either of the bolts. Could it be I need to spray some penetrating oil on the bolts or could it be the ratchet I’m using?
@jpulley
@jpulley 2 года назад
Hopefully you already got your started out looks like you posted 3 hours ago. If not. I would definitely spray with some penetrating oil. Also use 1/2" swivel/socket/extension. Use a 1/2" breaker bar if you have one or at least a good 1/2 ratchet.

@@jpulley thanks for replying, I’m at work atm and plan to continue tomorrow. Wanted to get a head start tonight and move my cold air intake out of the way and was trying to work on getting the old starter out so when tomorrow comes I can put the new starter in when it gets delivered. I think I need a breaker bar so I’ll rent one or borrow one from a buddy tomorrow. Will update ya on how it goes!

i have a question, what is the best quality starter for Kia rio 2008 ? and how much does it cost???
@marcsmith3881
@marcsmith3881 3 года назад
If I am using Rebuilt starters in Asian vehicles, I only use Denso. I paid $130 for last one I did for Kia Rio.

@@LeeBen-d7m I would just go to auto zone. Give them the make and model of your vehicle and trim level. They should give you the right starter. If they give you the wrong one just take it back.

I cant say for 100% certainty, but I have seen vehicles that take longer to start fixed after a new starter installed. They get weak overtime then will eventually die. I would bet a new starter would take care of your problem.

I bought the starter they say it’s not fitting
@jpulley
@jpulley Год назад
That's strange, as you can see in the video it definitely fits. It was a little work getting it in there. But that was maybe 30 seconds of moving it around until I got it. If you actually do have the same starter that I purchased I would send them a link to this video and say "some guy on youtube got it in there" Actually they might take offense to that. I really don't know what the best course of action is at this point. I would at least mention that people have gotten this starter in before.

Kias are crap, my rio barely has 85,000 km on it and the starter already needs to be replaced! How many kms/miles were in this one?
@jpulley
@jpulley 4 года назад
I cant remember how many miles it had but I don't think it had 100k on it. It's a reason why they can sell them so cheap. People would be better off buying a low mileage Toyota or Honda used rather than buying a new Kia. When I was 19 I bought a Toyota Camry with 65000 miles on it I drove that thing for 8 years probably could have still had it if I didn't get careless with the oil changes nothing ever broke on it and that eight years of time.
@zaytoony
@zaytoony 4 года назад
@@jpulley you're absolutely right, a while ago i bought a used 07 civic Si with over 100k miles, drove it for 3 years with no problems whatsoever, gave it away to a friend as I had to relocate to a diff. country and couldnt take it with me...to this day he drives it with ZERO trouble!
@zaytoony
@zaytoony 4 года назад
@@jpulley ac compressor also failed prematurely on the kia at 50,000 km, and crankshaft position sensor, had to change evaporator and horn, plus clockspring. Fuel pump failed a month ago and now I have an intermittent misfire with no codes and I can't get to the bottom of it. Finally it runs hot, I had to cut the stock grill...it improved heat dissipation but on hot days long drives are a no no.

Oh yeah? Different opinion here. Bought Honda Civic 2013 brand new 25 miles odo. It was a rattling, creaking, clunking piece of junk within only 3K miles. Headlamps dim could barely see driving nites. Defroster didn't work - had to purchase an external for safety. Door locks noisy operation, loads of other issues. Honda wouldn't fix anything _!!!_ After 7500 miles got tired of dealing with issues - traded in for 2013 Kia. Have had zero problems to this date - even still has orig battery. Best car I've owned - much better than crappy fall apart Hondas. Might be up there with Toyota - definitely better than Subaru by far.
