The maintenance to remove the starters from these vehicles is very complex, some have to be disassembled in front of the vehicle, exhaust manifold system, turbines, in short ..... congratulations on the video. You won 1 more new subscriber here. Like guaranteed, hugs.
Christopher Cameron Bro your method totally worked. I didn't move radiator into service mode and the only other thing I did different was use a 16mm hex wrench/spanner for the back bolt cause I didn't have a ratchet that fit. Took some doing but I got it open. Also I used an aftermarket starter that had 4 leads unlike the 2 leads on the Audi one. I had to trial and error the leads cause the manufacture failed to label them but eventually got it going. Weirdly enough my new starter sounds like a supercar starting up lol. Thanks again!
Also it turned out the car was in need of a new catalytic converter gasket so I put a new one in and it sounds so much quieter when driving now. So that's 2 birds with one stone with this project.
Great to hear! Yeah it can be a pain to get a wrench some places, this is the hardest starter to replace ever, lol. Thanks for the follow up, I love it. Cheers
If you dropped the motor mount youd have enough room to remove the starter, Additionally, you can avoid replacing a bad starter altogether by keeping up with any oil leaks.
Eddie Padilla, I saw a few write ups on that. Accessing the top starter bolt is a pain either way, so pulled the cat up a bit for that. And once the lower air feed hose was pulled there was room to remove her. However most 1.8t starters have a heat shield attached, this one didn't. I got a new heat shield on, but it was a slight pain. The old starter had a loose/unattached positive power post, you could spin it around in place. Good comment, cheers!
Yeah, its a bit cramped in there but I was able to access it with a swivel and extension. An impact driver and torque bars makes things a lot easier too. Salud!
Just removed the starter to replace on 05 A4 Quattro, got to the bad bolt through the passenger side wheel well, lot better than trying that exhaust manifold way I thought
Got a question, where did you buy the starter. I’m from Massachusetts and I haven’t found too many stores that sell quality starters for an A4. I’ve tried findin sum online but they’re usually weird brands that have reviews that don’t even pass 3 out of 5 stars.
I don't comment on videos often and never say negative things online but, Please take this video down!!! What a hack! I just changed the starter on my 2004 1.8TQ.... You literally don't even need the hood open for this. The ONLY additional part I removed for extra wrench clearance was the rubber turbo outlet hose that "y's" to the divert valve. Everything is accessible under the car. Honestly, what the hell did I just watch. Considering flagging this for being so misinforming.
You don't need the hood open ? Really pretty sure you need the hood open whenever your doing any mechanical work on your car dip shit god people like you are just pathetic!!! Grow up and quit acting like your the only one that knows how to do it and everyone else is wrong like na bro your dumb ass is wrong!!!
Do you know how to fix the problem with the speed sensor no conection.. i drive the car but i Dont know how fast im going any idea how to fix the problem
The speed sensor is on the driver side, it's also used for the ABS system. But the driver side is the one you want. Did you run VAG-COM on your car, that should tell you where the fault is. Those sensors can be rough to get out, they're easy to get to though. Does the rest of your instrument cluster work okay? Sorry for the late reply, been busy lately. Cheers
Hmm, not too sure on that. It looks like the 1.6 is transverse engine. I've honestly never worked on the a3 1.6, but it looks awesome! I'll let you know if I can find anything on it. Cheers
I just bought my first a4 1.8t. And the two post at the end toward front of car. Does any wires connect to those other than the top of the starter? Thanks in advance
Sorry for the late response! Are you trying to pull the front end forward and/or off to get better access to the serpentine belt or timing belt? You can put the car in service mode without removing a lot of the connections, but fully removing the front end requires disconnecting the right side connections, the coolant hoses, and the transmission fluid lines. Service mode you want two long bolts that fit in the same spot (as the six bolts) that hold the bumper posts on. Let me know if I'm talking about the same thing, sorry again for the very late response! Cheers!
I would certainly agree with this suggestion. I just did this yesterday in removing the starter in a 2003 VW Passate 1.8 L Much easier than trying to go down behind the engine in the back.
