Starter Replacement 2003-2008 Mazda 6 (V6)

This video is made as a guideline to show you how to change the starter on a 2003-2008 Mazda 6 with a V6 engine and an automatic transmission. The same procedure will apply to the V6 manual transmission, but the starter is a different part number.

Followed the video and the entire job only took about 2 and a half hours, including running to the store to get the new starter. Thank you so much! Will note: a magnetic handle is extremely helpful, almost necessary, to reach the places you'll need access to (mainly the two bolts on the back of the starter). Good luck to everyone, don't forget when you're taking it out and putting it back in to be gentle and slow. That's what she said.

Thanks for the video! I'm In the middle of this job on a 2005 and I have some suggestions for those in the rust belt. Use a good penetrating oil like SeaFoam Deep Creep on the bolts, especially on the starter motor. I had to purchase a 13 mm 6 point socket in order to remove the starter. The bolts were so tight, the 12 point socket was rounding the bolt heads. Corrosion is a nasty thing.

I just did this today. I just kept removing things and I got to the point where I almost opened the coolant line. Lol. Fortunately I was able to wiggle that thing out. The reassembly took Half as long. lol.

Lol they ran my coolant hoses super short and they stop out right on top of the second bolt. Which might I add is rusted in 😅

Yes, other than what I demonstrated at the beginning of this video that is another symptom of a failed starter.

Did you ever bench test the starter to make sure it was bad?? Seems like a lot of people have grounding problems on the Mazda 6, which would also cause a no start like you experienced.

I replaced mine and it’s now got this awful grinding\ticking sound. I’ve search up and I think it’s possible it’s not disengaging after it starts? And the flywheel is grinding on it? That’s what it sounds like. Can anyone help please?! I’m desperately in need

Yeah it's possible. Pull the starter back out and inspect the bendex gear as well as the flex plate that it engages on. If it has marks on the teeth like it's been grinding, there's your problem. Make sure you have the correct starter too. They make one for the V6, one for the 4Cyl, and one for auto trans, and one for manual trans. So you need to have your specific one. Otherwise it might not line up like it should

@@AutoFixYT thank you for the reply. I’m 100% sure it’s the right starter motor. My battery isn’t the best in the car but it’s enough to start the car up so it can’t be that right? Could it have a enough juice to the start the car but not retract the bendex gear? Any other reasons why it wouldn’t retract? I’m thinking it’s an electrical issue somewhere

@@boombap1176 no the battery won't be your issue. If you're 100% correct that it's the right starter then you have a faulty starter. Have it exchanged for a different one.

@@AutoFixYT yeah they got it mixed up somehow. After I get the starter on then we can hopefully find out what the real problem is. We let a supposed mechanic change the plugs and he managed to really mess the car up.

I honestly never knew these mazda 6's came with a v6... I've only ever seen the 2,3 n/a or the special awd mps 2.3 turbo i think

Yeah a lot of them actually came with a V6. But I think most people prefer the 4 Cyl for fuel economy which makes sense. But the V6 does have lots of power and is fun to drive haha

@AutoFixYT hence why I chose my 6 albeit not a v, the boxer 3.6L 6 in my '10 outback, better torque, good power and timing chains, no belt to service. I'm lucky it appears before I bought it the timing cover had been resealed because it doesn't look like factory sealant. No leaks and service it religiously. Has that Mazda v6 got chains? Pretty much all the 4 bangers do which is good.

0:45 oooft that rust ain't looking good on the strut tower, clean that down and protect and seal that asap, wouldn't want your suspension coming through your body lol. If you're in the rust belt of America, and knowing how mazda's don't have good rust protection/underbody paint coating, that could be bad.
