If your starter has a grinding noise or just clicks it probably needs starter replacement. Its location is the driver’s side midway down on the engine, newer firewall.

This was the best explanation of how to remove the starter heat shield. There's another video on YT where the owner seems to be going through starters but didn't have a heat shield and had problems with the signal wire spade connector...it's probably from all that heat. Thanks man!

The third "bolt" hole is for a metal ziptie to hold the shield. The lower long bolt goes through heat shield lower hole and gets a star retainer

This is correct. It actually has a christmas tree type clip but a zip tie will work just as well

Use a jointed ratchet socket on that top bolt and it’s 100% easier. I also used a stubby that you can put extensions on so much easier. Drop the forward drive shaft too.

Do you have to pay attention to the positioning of the front driveshaft before removing it, or can I just remove bolts to have better access to starter?

Yes, just like I explained in the video. You want to remove and install exactly as it was.

@@Motorcarnut sorry, I should have been clearer. I don't want to completely remove the front driveshaft. I was wondering if I could just remove the bolts on the side closest to the front of the car and let it lay/rest on something, to free up some space. Or do is this not possible and I have to completely remove the whole shaft off?

Yes that’s fine, that’s what I did, just put a mark on both the driveshaft and the flange so it goes back in the same position.

Awesome video! Looks way easier than a 3.8l dodge grand caravan lol 😂 the van was way too low to the ground and was hard to find a jack that would lift it high enough to be chubby guy friendly, some of it had to be done from the top and some from the bottom, the jeep looks to be a breeze!

Do all jeeps come with spacers because i just changed my starter again because when i turn it on it cranks but doesn’t turn on. I still have that issue now so im not sure what’s the problem

No spacers on JK's that I know of. Maybe you have a different problem because it the vehicle cranks then the starter is good.

There is no way I can get at that top bolt with the drive shaft on. There is no room to move the ratchet.

Why? Just look up year, make , model and engine or code ( 8th digit) or if buying from dealer the vin number

These are the worst starters, I’m changing a 3rd starter for a friend on his jeep. Buy OEM if you want it to last longer but beware it want last long and you will be replacing it again soon.

Wow, mine never gave me a problem and only replaced it because it was old and I take my Jeep to extreme remote places so I keep it in top shape.
