Starting a City from a Train Station is a Very Good Idea! - In Cities Skylines

➤ Another historic way to start a city! With the advent of trains and rail many cities and towns popped up in the spaces in between large cities. Or BECAME large cities. All you needed was a train station or junction and your town was on the map! With this modified start map you can replicate the conditions of these railway towns and build naturally. No large highway to get in the way!

I'm from Turenki, Finland. Turenki is a small town on the first rail line in Finland between Helsinki and Hämeenlinna and Turenki just had a population of around 200 before the railroad. When the rail came, Turenki's population and industry skyrocketed to the current day 8,000 as it is. The station from 1866 is still in use today. Train starts are epic.

theres a town near me in Australia called Werris Creek, like many towns it sprung up when rail was being built. It used to be like the service point for any rail north of the state, and is just one big rail yard xD, the station is magnificent and most of it is a museum. It actually is where Angelina jolie's film 'unbroken' was filmed. The street signs are train station shaped and the town is focused around their train history. It only has around 1,500 people though.

I love placing tracks and stations in the middle of my builds because it just immediately sets off ideas about how the town developed, the characters of the different neighborhoods, etc. Building up a commercial core around the train station gets you one kind of city, while sticking an industrial logging and warehouse district gets you another. It's so much more useful than the "blank slate" that a lot of highway interchange starts feel like.

This is a wonderful looking map to start a city with! Another possible scenario for this start - My hometown of Luck, WI is a train town that actually existed before the railroad came. The town was next to one of 2 lakes and the rail ran between. A new main street was laid out next to the railroad tracks, and the buildings were moved one at a time to the new location by horses. Because of the length of the moves, businesses would even stay open DURING the move.

Your videos and streams are always interesting and informative. I am a relatively new player of the game and find that having to wait so long to get trains in your city makes it hard to add them after. A start city with trains seems really good. I'm also trying to work on adding my own assets with old steam trains and associated buildings. I've been a 3d modeler for years so that part is easy. I'll eventually work out all I need to get them in game and as I'm on epic and not steam it's a little different.

My HOUSE came off of a train in pieces and parts and was built here 130 years ago. I am absolutely thrilled with this idea. It has never made sense to me what an afterthought rail is in the game. Especially since the game is so Euro-centric. What I typically do when I start a map is to decide what motivated the founding of the city in the first place. Was it a coastal fishing village? A mountain mining town? From there I decide where the workers likely built their homes, where shops sprang up to support the fledgling burg, etc. Roads then organically flow between these areas. Being able to start from a train station or port adds a new layer of abstraction to this method that should really make things interesting. Now I can build towns far from the highway, maybe not even connected at all by road to the outside world.

Hey Yumbl...if you play unlimited money, and unlock everything/81 tiles, it's pretty fun to start with an airport, and see if you can make $$$$ fast enough to stay in the black. I did it once, and was never able to keep consistently growing cash flow, but when I did it, I wasn't using the Industries mod. I think with Industries, it could be pulled off. I did manage to stay in the black for periods of time. I also overused Metro, though, and that sucked a lot of cash. I got in traffic trouble early on, and that was a way to decongest the airport. Starting with a train is probably a bit more organic 😛

I think what is missing from the game is date based progression. So for example, you start during a different age, different buildings different everything. The technology is limited, the type of zones also limited. Another thing the game really needs is a zone creation method where you are dragging out plots of land and then sub-dividing it like in reality. And your plots of land aren't squares. Then the game would attempt to place square tiles into that zone at the optimum location, but the plot would still be this larger area, and it would have a fence like in reality. Then you sub-divide, so you start with maybe farmland, then you might change it to housing, and like they do today, maybe you end up with units or apartments in the future when the land is all dense. And maybe your sub-divisions occur dynamically? Maybe your only interaction with it, is selling off the original parcel of land, altering the zoning rules for the land, and then watching as the residents make changes. And you know, in reality, this is how roads end up forming. From convenience. Like, the residents pretty much paved those original roads to get them to go to where they needed them. Maybe your startup roads are also built in this fashion?

I absolutely love the way this map is playing. I hadn’t unlocked any highway yet, but still have stone, farm, and wood set up, with a sizeable campus and a Pedestrian only area across the lake, using the double wide bus/walking path for the bridge over the water. I’ve only dipped out of the starter square for a straight shot 4 lane road to the oil/stone area. All of the everything is still going solely through the stations, though I replaced clickable version, moving the shipping station further down from the train crossings like a block or two. Also, i assume a pedestrian area could be plopped around the train station that included some commercial zoning or touristy ploppables, it should keep the train arrivals from pulling cars while making tourists immediately give you dat money for the zoo/museum/landmark admission.

Getting all of the industries maxed out and earning 30 million combined from all specialty factories on the train station one with the highway even further removed from the start. I was thinking about a similar map. Thank you for noting the use of FindIt. Improvements to this map: Put the connecting road on the same side. Add a passing track. The passenger trains will tie up the cargo trains and then get blocked. Also longer TGV trainsets end up blocking short platforms. Longer sides / bigger wye, so larger trains can get in. Upgrade the roads from National Highway to dirt / rural roads. Simple T-junctions, nothing to make Sims want to use anything but the rails. I found traffic would just stop and Sims would walk to the road if it got to close.

I like the idea of having a rail connection which, once established allows me to grow my city from within. I have usually one or maybe even two highway entrances to my city. From my first city, I expand outward from that city on the side which is furthest from the highway entrance to keep those out-of-towners OUT. I expand slowly which allows my population to grow from within. The same expansion is allowed from the other city. I can grow separate cities, link them via rail, then if I desire via roads, once the population has stabilized. Too many people, too fast, bogs down my roads...

it depends on what part of the world. US, Russia, Australia, India, Africa have many railroad towns on much of their deep interiors. More developed areas or very late colonized areas not so much. Europe was already pretty built, as was the east coast of the US. The railroads had to smash and grab their way through existing towns. Another thing a CSII desperately needs is access to farm/forest/fish/mining ect at the start, with regular industry later. every city, not just railroad towns, developed because of those basic raw resources. factories and industries came later. The idea that I have to build factories before I can even collect raw resources is just not how things work. It's backwards. Even today, new towns are created becuase of raw resoruces. If it lasts long enough industries come later to take advantage of those raw resources.

Hasn't this been done before with mods or saves? You could have roads ending at a corner of the map with passenger and cargo transfer there. This then connects only by railroad to the center valley. (You might need to have all those land tiles unlocked?) To be car-free it might need further "cheats" to make one finished miniature village with just a pedestrian zone and all the essentials you need for it. Maybe a bus line? Than you can expand and replace the start area yourself later. But you probably can't convert an edited save game to a map you can share, or can you?

This has certainly been done before, but it’s also somehow very frequently requested. You actually dont need highways at all to do what you’re describing.

There is/was a way to extract a map from a SaveGame file and then be able to load that map into the map editor. If that method still works than maybe you could build the map inside the game where the assets work. Than you can extract the map into the editor then finish it for uploading to the workshop.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL Год назад
Buildings in the map editor work. You just cant click on them. I’m not sure how extracting from a save would change that, as you would still have to save the map as a map for it to be playable.

I’d like to start a little town with passenger rail steam train in the late 1800s/early 1900s and have it grow to current day. I’ve only been playing city skylines about a month so I don’t know if that is even possible.
@michaelwoods2672
@michaelwoods2672 Год назад
I'd really like a start that actually has existing towns and villages that the city can grow from and into, as many modern cities actually did (Birmingham in the UK is a good example of this), but I think that's actually just not possible to do properly in the game. I always find the beginning of Cities: Skylines odd when you're just plonking down a 21st century city into absolute wasteland with no historic buildings or layout.

My city is named after an employee of the railroad that served as the foundation for the city. Of course now the railroad serves -very little- absolutely no purpose to the city cause The Car Is King 😔. (Edit: I looked in the map and there isn’t a single building that has access to the rails. There isn’t a cargo station or passenger station anymore.)
@stephenspackman5573
@stephenspackman5573 Год назад
I think the way the small town has the money to avoid the at-grade crossing is that the national government doesn't want its citizens to die and the national rail network wants its trains to arrive on time? Things don't _have_ to be funded locally if that violates a global policy; that's a peculiarly American way of looking at the world. And of course if they _are_ funded locally they're still going to have to meet national construction standards. Of course, at-grade crossings do exist throughout the world, but in a modern setting where the rail line is intended to provide the main external connection (rather than the single heavy goods train per day model that we see in too much of North America), this does seem like a choice made in a jurisdiction that is trying to kill off rail transportation.
