As mentionned in other comment there is a "New Orleans vibe" and as a french i really love frenchie name in Louisiane like "Baton rouge" "Lafayette". So today i read a short story about the first world tour for France by "Bougainville" and i'm pretty sure he found some bay like this during his trip. So i think "Bougainville" sound good for this city or a coastal district :) (sorry i'm french so my english not as good i think ^^)
I love how all the cities skylines RU-vidrs watch everyone else. It's such a positive community and a break from all those super competitive RU-vid communities
I loved how the unbuilt train tracks looked. I think that as the city changes and industry areas move, the tracks should stay and become abandoned, tracks torn up with just the roadbed left. Some parts could be turned into walking paths, roads, but still clues of what used to be there.
Saint Marie, a town known for the French expeditions into the swamps of Louisiana, it was founded by Mayor Marie Germaine, after the captain Luis died. She took it onto herself to lead the small village and grew it so when she passed away, there was a statue created in her honor. Now as an American town set in alternate Louisiana, it is part of the great Mile Bay area.
As a Louisiana native, I'm really excited to see where this goes, especially with the big swamp nearby! I could totally see this having some cool southern vibes. As for a name of the town, maybe Florien (from fleur-de-lis, an icon of Louisiana) or maybe Taylor or Zachary (named after Zachary Taylor, a U.S. president who lived in Louisiana before his presidency)
I had a huge amount of anxiety watching the money plummet during the timelapse. Super excited for this series!! Ive been wanting to try something similar myself and will be taking lots of inspiration from you
Honestly, I think the 'the city should look complete even after the 1st episode' is something you fully achieved. Those closing cinematic shots I was thinking, wow, he built an entire city in a single episode. It looks done.
I LOVE that you're doing a gameplay focused city! Hyper detail/model railroad building is great, but it's nice to see the game actually played as a game and not just a sandbox.
So glad to hear you wanted to play the game, use money, unlock milestones, etc. rather than just drawing; but then you used a map with all utilities already in place and unlocked all tiles, so that plan didn't last very long.
Like everyone else, it seems, I’m loving the concept and watching you actually play. I agree that custom assets should be included, since the vanilla game looks dated in this day and age, but it’s great so far. And the 7 that disliked should speak up as to why. I think you should use the Bald Cypress trees for the deeper portions of your swamp, as well… definitely would add some US coastal authenticity.
I've never been able to refuse myself the rights to the Unlock All 81 Tiles mod! lol. I think only once, when I first played, was I able to pull it off... but it didn't last that long (I think 5 tiles before I moved onto a different city lol)
I love the way that swamp looks. The themes and LUT on this map are also simply amazing, I can’t wait to see where this city is headed and how you manage the budget now that you have money limitations! I’m also more of an unlimited money type of player, so this is going to be super interesting!
FINALLY. I love this. I love to see organic city growth. This is how I always build my best cities too. I like the process of building a larger city, because neighborhoods have a history throughout the game, instead of just being "plopped" down.
This is so exciting! :) Also, I'd personally prefer to see you use custom assets at least for services (police, fire, healthcare, etc.) and landmarks like skyscrapers, museums, ... Those buildings tend to stand out among the growables, which, unfortunately, is not a good thing when one uses vanilla buildings with vanilla textures :D
You should disable some of the utilities (like water, power, waste, ferry and stuff) until you need them, because you pay maintenance on them while they are enabled which means you are wasting money. :D
I'm glad you're doing it this way - I like your other series, but I prefer seeing the game progression like this rather than starting with a CBD and expanding out. I'm also keen to see how you make it look like a real city going through those progressions.
I remember buying this game prerelease. I found this video series to encourage me to play it again as it's been a while. The amount of mods available for Cities Skylines now is almost overwhelming.
Cool! I much prefer organically growing cities. Upgrading or gentrying areas as the population grows, being heavily car dependent and over time trying to introduce effective transportation etc. So much more exciting!👍👍
This vid earned my sub. You've outlined and done a great job of overcoming what i consider a problem with CS, that is developing a city organically. Most cities start small with randomly distributed pockets around a resource/economically valuable point. When you have to work in a single section and don't get railroads until later game -- doesn't make sense. So i approve of your mods and applaud your method. :)
You're clearly just as much of a wizard when working within the game mechanics (within reason) as when you're doing those supermodded superdetailed builds. Love seeing this side of you and looking forward to the rest of this series! :)
Love the choice to have the buildings only spawn on parallel streets with perpendicular open for thru-traffic. Very common, and very much like the Detroit grids where people seem to use the driveway-less roads for parking (and racing).
Also I grew up just out of city limits on 3 acres like your "hobby farms" and all the lots have been collected and are redeveloping into tighter neighborhoods now
The rail y-intersection being raised has a basin in the middle where flooding would take place if you don't have proper drainage into the slough nearby
Name Suggestion: Aspen Heights. Though this name probably wouldn't be for the main city, I imagine Aspen Heights would be built near the mountains. Its economy supported by people from other areas coming to hike in its pristine forests, swim in its (artificial, or natural lake depending on where 2.20 chooses) lake. Most of the population lives in cabins along the mountain side, and near the lake, with tourists generally renting out these cabins, or staying at the towns only hotel. (For real life examples of this city. Lake Tahoe, Nevada/California. Bear Lake, Utah/Idaho. Crater Lake, Oregon)
Super keen for this series! Some name suggestions: La Perouse, Esperance, Huon, Faure, Peron. Something french-ish You mentioned taking influences form New Orleans yet the map looks somewhat Australian/New Zealand like. Maybe the city is from an alternate timeline where the French settled Australia. You could use some European assets and some other vaguely new-world stuff as well.
This was sick! What a way to flex your skills man, I start up the game and I can't make a town look like this in 10 hours, probably why I watch and don't play. Really excited about this series.
One idea for a small town, there was a time period (in the US at least) where there was a lot of railroad expansion in the 1800s. The US government enticed railroad companies to build lines buy paying them in land grants adjacent to the tracks. This later lead to railroads founding many towns and selling real estate. Advertising to people that they could buy a cheap piece of property, which may be worth a lot if the town ever develops into a larger city. Of course, that only ever happened to a handful of towns and most never expanded beyond their initial planned out grid. The railroads would just establish these towns by the dozens with simple, quick blueprints and as a result, many of these railroad towns have many of the same features. Usually, a main street that runs either parallel or perpendicular to the tracks. Where Main Street meets the tracks there would be a depot/station. This would be the center of town and would expand out from there with streets for residential. As the years go on, railroads loose out to the automobile and the depots/stations are either bulldozed or repurposed as the trains only pass by anymore. Except for the occasional freight train to service the grain elevator. The town gets a break and starts to grow into something big enough that it gets passenger service once again and its old station now becomes a historic building. Though the story of most towns ends at the grain elevator or no rail service at all and they slowly wither away.
Excited to see less modded series, will be looking forward to watch some vids on your basic mods (maybe a "How to series"), planning or optimizing cs as it becomes too laggy after installing mods and assets.
This is the type of series I was hoping for. Within the (mostly) vanilla restrictions of the game, could you build a realistic city? This is how I play CS
interesting what you do. i like destroying everything on starting a map. creating my own exits and entry points to the map, whether they be road, rail or ship tc.
Love where this is going! Would definitely recommend leaving an area near the port or along the river for a rail yard and some sidings. Could even add like a small industry area along them to represent railroad maintenance shops and such.
Absolutely love this! When you said in previous videos that you were gonna do a ground-up type city build I got so excited. I can see how you put all of those sweet Skills of yours in a natural gameplay to where I can then tweak how I make my vanilla(ish) cities!
Really excited for this! Having limited money and milestones on adds a degree of realism to how the city will grow and expand. Your tree placement makes SO much difference to the look and feel of the place. Looking forward to seeing more of this. In terms of a city name, owing to its proximity to the bay and the rivers, maybe Flow Point?
I haven't investigated how to use the terrain mods and tools to their best use yet, but it was nice to see how you made the map your own. It turned out really nice. Excited to see the next vids, and the rural farmland look you made around the town was also a thing I'll be looking into, kinda impossible to do with the industries dlc alone
since you said about it being a bit like New Orleans, you should call it Saint Louise, because some southern colonial towns have Saint in the start and then Louise, being the female version of Louis and Louisiana which was named after French King Louis XIV is the state where New Orleans is. Great Video Loved It!! :)
Oh wow, this could be ever better than your other projects! Love the idea of evolving town and cities, instead of trying to make up a story. This should, in theory, feel even more natural. The only thing that looks strange is the massive highways and intersections. I would just replace them with way smaller roads, and upgrade as needed.
I really love the island at 2:08! Honestly I feel like you could make it a nature preserve and have small coastal fishing villages back and forth from the mainland. Maybe not quite doing a bridge as this area might not have the feasibility for it, plus using a ferry just seems like a cool way to have a small area of 200-500 ppl serviced
Awesome start! I think that eventually turning some of the plots into small subdivisions would be cool - it seems to be a pretty natural progression when larger lots are near the city / town center
I was also using vanilla tree remover, but finding it was a ton of work going back in to add trees/bushes again. Switched to Beautiful Our Builds and just replace the vanilla trees included in the asset with ones from the workshop. Saves a lot of time.
highly modded & 100% functional is not just possible, it's the best version of the game imho. i grow all my cities organically and in the end they look just as good as the best planned aesthetic by tubers that give the "procedural object" treatment to every triangle in the city. planning is fine, but the game works and looks so much better if you let the cims inform your decisions instead of forcing a build.
I loved marble mountain, but I think this is going to be my favorite series. It's inspiring me to start playing. I've had the game for years, but never really played it.
It's somewhat refreshing to watch you doing zoning :) The town's looking good already, and with your plan to have more pockets of town/village throughout the map this gonna be exciting... Thanks for the entertainment!
Suggestion: St. Jane sur Marais, meaning, Saint Jane by the marsh. Jane is a catholic saint who had to do with the sea, and since you're going for a New Orleans kinda city, I added the French, "sur Marais" meaning by the swamp/marsh. It's a take on the often used "[blank] sur Mer" in many French seaside towns, meaning by the sea. Looking great, hope you add a the little european twist in the mix! :)
This series is gonna be like watching city planner plays, if he knew the game inside and out! (nothing against him, I love his videos, but TDT just knows this game very well!)
The map looks like it'd have been a great place for a colonial mission, so naming it after a fictional french mission (and perhaps having some nods to it on the map?) would be awesome. The French had two quite common naming conventions, port xxx and naming things after sainte marie. So perhaps this is Port Sainte-Marie? One of the first established French ports on the coast of Louisiana. The port declined with the rise of other ports along the coast, and eventually was little more than a Hamlet. However, with the population boom that happened in the late 19th century, and with the discovery of valuable natural resources in the area (perhaps oil?) the town of Port Sainte-Marie was re-established and grew into a small city on the coast of Louisiana.
I think it would be super cool to first complete the whole map in this style. This style meaning small 1000ish or even smaller population towns, with all those farms, singular houses and small industries in between. And only once you have the entire map covered, you would start with the rebuilds and expansions and stuff. For example, one might say "tourists found this beach and it became very popular," so the surrounding towns would start popping up hotels and short term rent houses. Or "there is a big industrial pland being build here" and the company that build it would support building of cheap, high density apartment coplex for it's workers in the nearby town. The possibilities are endless.
I'm so excited for this series :) Really interesting to see you play the game like "intended?", it's so different to your usual style. "keep it barebone with the mods"? :D Let's see how barebone it will be in the end xD
this is such a great idea for a series! definitely a great source of inspiration for people who like to play the game with milestone and money restrictions, great to see how much can be done without too many assets and mods. cant wait to see more! :)
I think this looks like a "Port St. Claire" ☺ I envy your ease of creating such a beautiful town while I struggle even with the most basic detailing in this game. 🤣 Keep it up!
If you're having this be inspired by Louisiana a fun fact is that what would be the equivalent to a swamp and/or lagoon is called a bayou. You could easily have an area inspired by Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge which is located east of New Orleans. I guess a name idea is Bayou Acadie. Acadie is french for Acadia which is where a lot of people migrated from to Louisiana and were basically a French colony where Nova Scotia is now. I'm sure there are other names that will work but this is an idea.
Just came across this on my home page. Big Bifa and CPP fan, just subbed, this is a nicely done episode! Glad to find another skyline channel, the amount of detail to the landscape is insane.
Now this is a city that I'd like to build! I think I'll jump into the game again soonnn :) Love the gameplay combined with your city building skills. It gives me a lot of inspiration for my games.
I am way behind in watching this but thank you for making a video for those of us that get frustrated on how our cities look compared to watching RU-vidrs that have gorgeous cities. It’s nice to finally watch a video from the start of a city to get knowledge, tips, and see how it grows. I have been playing with mods since workshop opened and can’t get my cities to look like how I envision in my head. Usually because of how landscaping has limits on edging. I want to play vanilla with as few mods as possible active so I can play how the game is intended to be played (like you are in this video. Would like to unsubscribe from all the unnecessary mods and only use the ones like you are, but also able to eventually go back to those unsubscribed mods, wish there was a way to save lists.
I Really loved the idea of creating a city from scratch and watching and making it grow bigger. Always loved the way how you do your series. Keep it up :)
My suggestion is Langley. (Good name for a small town or bigger city) Possibly the last name of the first mayor. Perhaps the park can have a monument to him. As if the town park was donated to the city and is in fact where Mr. Langley’s home sat
Looks very american. I know you just did a whole series on this area but you know springfield oregon is good inspiration for this landscape and form of growth. If you look into the eastern side into what's called Thurston, it would be perfect. The subdivision development into rural and semi rural land is really apparent and is super cool to look at. It's always changing and growing and is a similar landscape in the sense that there are waterways all over in the form of irrigation canals that really shape how the area develops, not to mention the steep hills containing the growth and forcing building into them, these areas make up the high income area with really cool expansion patterns. In excited for this series man its gonna be really cool!
First 'vanilla' series I watched for a while. Good start! Biggest challenge will be sticking to the limits you set yourself, even when you might get to a point where you would like to divert from those limits and you ask the viewers whether you should. Let's not get to that point 😜 Keep up the good work!
