Great video! What a great idea. It will be interesting to follow your journey with this retinoid. I have been using tretinoin (Retin-A) for a few years now. For anti-aging, though I have noticed that it has eliminated acne issues as well. I have found that "less is more" - and that starting off slowly is the way to go - just as you demonstrated in the video. I use the tretinoin maybe 1-2x a week, usually 0.1% but sometimes I dilute it down to 0.05% with an inert cream, depending on how my skin is feeling. I use a retinol cream (2%) on most other nights. The Differin might be a good alternative now that it is over the counter.
Well, I went out and bought everything you mentioned. I hope it works for me. I'm so tired of having acne problems at 32 years old. It's one thing to break out terribly when you're a teen but I feel like when you're my age everyone just thinks you're a meth addict. Fingers crossed this works.
Cant stop watching ur videos... the best part is I can listen to it videos like a podcast... You have gorgeous skin doc! I wonder what could be ur age, if you dont mind.
I can't believe that you just said, "I'm going to sit down!" You are always walking, running, weight lifting or cooking!!! I admire your commitment to staying fit! I'm the opposite! I sit way too much since I retired. I use to walk an hour a day & walk briskly too. Plus, the gym. I gotta getta moving, Dr. Dray!!! Oh, I have tried the CALM drink of magnesium. It made me high! lol I think they have reformulated it since I tried it a decade ago. Maybe good for my husband's nightly leg cramps. HIs electrolytes are terribly off-balance!!! Thanks for the Differin info!!!
Oh my gosh I'm so happy I found your video! I was looking around to find some info on retinoid because the one I was looking at was 60 bucks for 1oz! I am 57 and want to fight the look of aging the best I can and I really wanted to try this cream. I would much rather spend 14 bucks on my first try! Thank you so much for this video and I will continue to watch..............Have a happy and blessed day, Mary
Thanks so much Mary! Glad you are finding the tips helpful and enjoying the vlogs! Adapalene is not FDA approved for wrinkles, but all topical retinoids can treat sun damaged skin cells, whihch contribute to the appearance of aged skin, as well as possible skin cancers. Other key for anti-aging 100% is broad spectrum sunscreen! Hope this helps and that you are having a fantastic day.
Mary I have been using Differin for a couple of weeks now and other than a bit of slight peeling on my chin I am doing well. I find that I have combination skin, and using this I think helps control the oil even the next day. Just found out via Dr. Dray that they also have a cleanser that I will be checking out too. I am 60!
My new words for the day... "off to buy anxiety meds' LOL!! My family is looking at me wierd, until they realize what i mean! Love the light ring on your counter! Would you mind sharing where you purchased it! Fantastic channel Andrea!

Dr Dray I have a few questions, first question is which foundation do you suggest using for acne prone, sensitive, combo skin? And my second question is my skin is what I call a mess... large pores, acne scars ( uneven kind not red marks) would differin gel help my skin? What else do you suggest. On a side note can’t do mineral oil, sulfates, corn oil highly allergic. I did buy neutrogena fresh foaming cleanser, differin moisture, differin gel. Also buying the zapzyt cleanser for morning routine which for morning moisture I will continue to use is Olay complete spf 30 . Need your advice on what you think. Thanks!
I'm very pleased I found your channel and I've been enjoying watching. I would like to know what is stronger, .25 percent retin a or 1 percent differen? I 've used the retin a in the past, but recently switched to the differen. I've had no irritation. Thanks for the info!
Hi klb374money! Welcome to the skin fam! So happy to have you here. Great question! I made sure and address it in today's vlog, so I hope that helps clarify (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A6XXKQB4i4Y.html). Let me know your thoughts. have a fab night!!
I'm so glad I found your channel!!! I just picked the Differin up today and was searching for videos. I'm going to watch yours and get all the information I can:-)
Hi Dr. Dray, just a quick question. I've been using 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide for almost a year now. My face has cleared up but I still get pimples here and there, and i'm left with post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Thinking of giving Differin a shot. Do you think my face would react pretty ok with Differin coz it's already been used to Benzoyl Peroxide? Or will it still go crazy and purge? Thanks.
I have a quick question. I just started using Differen on my chest last week. And I recently noticed my entire chest breaking out in small groups of vericose veins. That's never happened to me EVER. It's either that or the new makeup remover towel from bednbath P.s I'm using different for wrinkles, I have zero acne problems. I'll see a Dr soon...
I just started using Differin. I used it for 3 days so far. I would apply it before the moisturizer, but I have been applying a bit more than the amount you used. I noticed a lot of dryness around my chin and also I think I might of got some on the corner of my eyes because I notice a bit of redness and soreness there. I stopped using it for two days. I will give it a try again but just the way you are applying it. Good tips!! Do you recommend I wait a bit more to use it again? . Thank you!
lizz M Hi! Hows ur progress with differin? Am just starting my second week, still a bit red & stinging but seems like the initial breakout just started, some cystc and whitehead here and there.. Is that normal? Are u suffer any breakout also? How about that?
I’m definitely retinol “naive”, as well. I’m nearly 50 and have been hesitant to start... partially because I suffer from mild to moderate rosacea... but also because I’m kind of set in my skincare routine. (It’s working well and has kept my rosacea pretty well managed.) But “everybody and there momma”... even those “youngin” that shouldn’t yet be worried about “anti-aging” are surprised that I am not yet using any. (People tell me that I actually look about 10 years younger...)
woow, we have all these frozen things here in the bazaar I have never seen frozen ones , for me ocra is agust vegetable and in winter you make soup with dried ocra...
Thank you Dr.Dray for your informative video. I was using Retin-A cream 0.25%, it effectively controlled my acne and reduced the overproduction of sebum on my face. Now, I'm in the UK and a GP prescribed Differin 0.1% cream, which doesn't have any effect at all ! I wonder why .?
Thanks! This video was made back in January, but I still use and love differin. I do in fact have acne, which is well controlled with consistent use of benzoyl peroxide and differin
Dr Dray am using the adapalane gel and night (layering with moisturizer first) and my two different derm give the spot treatment. One is containt BP and second is containt clyndimicin & tretinoin, which one is better to used & can i layering on top after differin? Can access my derm for the next 2 week cause she just out of town, so i need ur advice doc :) so happy to find ur channel! Already subscribe!
Hello doctor! Can we use retinol as early as 24 years of age??? And does retinol make our skin cells reach hayflick limit?? Is it bad to pump in retinol in 20s???.. Please clear the doubt as i am not sure if i should continue using it.
Thanks for sharing I have very oily skin ,open pores and acne and as much as it bothers me it bothers my two teenage boys. :( I'm so glad that I found your channel thank you again for sharing your knowledge! ❤
Could you make a video about microneedling? I see lots of derm offices offering that now but i want hear what your thoughts on it are. Btw great channel!!
I don't perform this, but it is an area of growing development in skin surgery. I think it is best performed by a trained physician, namely a skin surgeon (i.e. a dermatologist or plastic surgeon). There are risks associated with a procedure like this, and therefore I don't advocate the use of home devices like the dermaroller.
Hi Dr. Dray, I've been loving your videos! I'm wondering about short contact therapy with benzoyl peroxide, as well as retin a or Tazorac. (not BP and a retinoid at the same time, instead I've asking about each individually). I have adult acne with sensitive, reactive skin, w/ hyper pigmention and melasma. (yes I hit the skin jackpot, haha). I am very sensitive to retinoids, I've tried retin a gel.01%, retin a micro, both strengths of differin). BP works for acne pretty well (but i'm always worried it might cause aging from stuff I've read online). Differin in the past didn't clear me completely, my skin got ridiculously oily, w/ larger looking pores than usual, I also couldn't use BP without tons of irritation, so I'm nervous to try it again. But I've recently heard that short contact therapy can work well with less irritation for BP & tazorac/retin a. Could washing these off after few minutes still give benefits? I really want have the anti-aging and acne benefit of a retinoid along with the acne help from a BP minus the irritation. Thank you!
Hello Dr Dray Love your channel, you're super down to earth and you look like a genuine person. I was recently prescribed Duac Once Daily (Benzoyl Peroxide 5%, Clindamycin 1% ) Gel. I was wondering how much should i use on my face and how many minutes should i apply it after i washed my face with a cleanser. Thank you
Thanks so much! For prescriptions it is best to check with the individual who prescribed the medication on how they would like you to apply it. Hope that helps!
aruytpadyugf Hi! SPF in makeup is great in theory, but in most cases, even if the SPF is high, you'd have to really cake the makeup on to receive any benefits. Doubling up an actual SPF lotion is going to give you the protection you need and save you from having cake face from an inch of makeup. 🙂
Hello doc Ray I'm new subscribe on your channel I'm watching from Kuwait doc as a dermatologist can I ask something I use isispharma Glyco A 12% just ask if Good for melasma I have melasma hypigmention on my cheeks and nose and I use neotone serum also because I want to get rid my hypigmention this product too much expensive here in Kuwait anyway doc can you give advice and what cream you can recommend for me thanks and More power
Hi! Just found your channel and subscribed immediately! You have such a great personality. I found you while looking up Differin. I'm a long time user of Proactiv. I have mild/moderate adult acne. I saw the commercial for differin and had to look it up! Question, when I use this at night, what happens when I wash my face in the morning? Aren't I then just washing off the differin? I'm so used to using acne medication morning and night that it seems odd to only use something once a day. Thanks!
Hi Sarah! Welcome and so glad the videos are helpful. No washing your face off in the morning does not wash off the medication. It concentrates in the sebaceous glands and effectively concentrates there within 5 minutes of application. It should be used once a day, not twice, as that is all that is needed for efficacy. Excessive use, or using too much just leads to skin irritation.
Check out my skin care routine videos as I show how I use it (but yes, I advocate moisturize b/4): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u1EqGJkNt9Y.html
Thank you so much! Great question! BHA (salicylic acid) liquid is fine to use on your off days, however it shouldn't be applied simultaneous with the adapalene because it may make some of it ineffective. HOpe this helps and that you are having a great night!
Hi Marianna! Thank you so much for tuning in and for your great comments. So sorry to hear about the hand eczema. Hand eczema can be a real pain this time of year, especially if you are washing your hands alot. I recently did a dermatologist's tips video that relates to hand eczema ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sMhdIXm-G80.html Check it out, as I think some of the tips may be helpful to you. Hope it helps!
I just watched a RU-vid video of someone saying Retin A can damage your skin with a long term use especially if you are having irritations. Is this true? Love to hear your thoughts.
If used with inadequate sun protection, then yes you can get more sun damage....which is why i strongly advocate evaluation, management, and consistent follow up with the treating dermatologist and/or health care provider
Dr. I got differin adapelene 0.1 and applied 4 nights after washing my face and applying cerave pm moisturizer lotion- I am completely red and dry, what to do. I don’t have much acne, but I have black head prone skin so I thot this routine will help and may make my skin younger. But I am red and itchy.
My dear, I also use the Differin gel after moisturizing my wet face w/ the cerave cream & letting it dry. My problem is that I have trouble spreading the pea-sized amount across my entire face (it peels up and doesn’t blend w/ moisturizer). Have you experienced this? Please tell me how to use it?
After applying Epiduo forte on my face for two weeks, I have acne on my forehead and places I didnt have acne before. Is it normal? Should I continue using it?
Hi Dr Dray :) I was just wanting to know your opinion on the Derma E Anti-Wrinkle Vitamin A Glycolic Toner with Papaya? (Its a Glycolic toner) Thanks so much :)
Thank you for answering my question so quickly! I saw how you put on the neutrogena moisturizer on in the a.m after using differin. I was wondering if its okay to use a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid before applying the differin.
So if I'm using a foundation with .5% salicylic acid, is it fine to use the differin at night after the foundation is washed off my skin? I just bought some differin today and want to try it.
Hi. New subscriber here. Just left dermatologist office & she recommended Differin gel. So of coarse I went straight to YT first to see reviews & can across your channel. I watched your video of first day but can't find updates. Can you send me links or do a update video. Thx!
Hi JoAnn and welcome! Glad you are enjoying and so happy to have you here. I have chronicled my use of differin every night in January, with updates along the way, so check out all the vlogs. HOpe you are having a great night!
Is it okay to do a weekly peel while using dofferin? Also is it safe to use differin while doing red light therapy. What are your thoughts on red light therapy?
Hello, Dr. Dray! I found this video very enlightening! I am 64 years young & never had a problem with acne or bad skin. NOW......suddenly I have larger pores on my cheeks, a couple of sun spots, and acne on my shoulders, arms, and upper back. I don't know what caused it. I am Type II Diabetic & have been putting just Neosporin Antibiotic Cream on my washed acne areas. I have a dermatologist, but couldn't get an appt. until May. Do you think Benzoperoxide that's in the products you mention would clear it up? I am looking at the Differin as a possible help for the large pores on my face. Is Clearasil any good? Thanks!
Thank you so much and thank you for sharing your experience here in the comments Ms Tate! Benzoyl peroxide is a great ingredient for acne, as is salicylic acid. Both of these ingredients are in different clearsil products, so flip them over and look at the ingredient list to know what you are going to be using. I have to videos explaining why I love these ingredients, so check those out too (under the "skin care ingredient faves" playlist). Hope this helps and so glad to hear you are able to follow with a dermatologist, as this is very important and helpful for folks with T2 diabetes. Hope you are having a great weekend!
the spice elixir: what flavor is it? so you just put one scoop of it in the cup and pour boiling water? I am so curious about your hot drinks because it's so soothing....so you like the chocolate matcha tea with stevia chocolate drops? does it really taste like hot chocolate? I'm sure you have LESS of a sweet tooth than I do LOL....if you could just do a video on your hot drinks only that would be great! I'm looking at your videos for each drink takes some time but worth it! :)
Hello Dr. Dray! I am so happy that I found your channel especially about the ones about adapalene. I was prescribed adapalene 0.3% in summer but even when I wanted to itch my neck slowly, it was giving me a tingling, little burning feeling. I took a break and started using it again 20 days ago. My acne looks more red but I can easily say that the pimples are coming to the surface and fading away faster than before. Do yo think it would help clear the red post-acne blemish in time since it renews the skin cells? I am 28 years old and I have never had acne in my life. I am originally from a humid place and I have always lived in humid countries until I moved to a desert city in Texas. And also, what do you think about SLES, SLS and Parabens? are they necessarily harmful for our skin? Thank you!
unless instructed to do so by your physician...adaplene isn't generally good to apply to the neck; follow up with them carefully as it may not be right for you
Good day everyone. Please I have a very vital question. I’m currently using adapalene and my current routine is to use it after moisturizing my skin. I currently use E45 cream as a moisturiser as my skin is very sensitive. I have acne-prone/oily skin however but the cream has worked well for me for over a year. But now, I’m starting to fear that using the E45 before the adapalene will reduce adapalene’s ability to reach my skin. I’m considering using the following routine Cleanse- niacinamide serum- adapalene- E45. Please is this okay? I would love to get advice. Thank you!
Love your videos! I've been using Differen (adaptolene), .1 for a couple months. My skin is FINALLY beginning to clear up; however, I feel like I need to be on the stronger dose (.3 I think). Is this still be prescription? Also, the Differen from Amazon feels greasy on my skin, and it's now Summer in Florida! What, if anything, can I do about this...Thx!
victoria pence Hi! Hows ur progress with differin? Am just starting my second week, still a bit red & stinging but seems like the initial breakout just started, some cystc and whitehead here and there.. Is that normal? Are u suffer any breakout also? How about that?
