In the 9th video in our 2021 Ford Transit van conversion series, we started laying our electrical wire! Over the course of several days we laid all of the wire we will need to power our 120 volt outlets, 12 volt outlets, 12 volt appliances and shore power inlet. Once we are done framing and can start putting the walls up, we'll be installing our lights + outlets and connecting all of our electrical.

One thing I've learned about wiring, don't overkill it. If i dont need 12 guage, don't us it. 120v lights are usually 14 guage and it is so much easier to work with.

Thanks for the videos. I have a 2022 transit on order and should get deliver in June. My build layout idea is very similar to yours, so finding your videos very helpful.

Can you please tell me the episode where you changed the Ford electrical that runs inside along the panels and you put behind in a channel. Then you had to figure out what to do with the partition. I saved the episode somewhere but now cant find it! Im at that point and trying to figure out how to go through that barrier. Thanks for sharing!!

After using the van for awhile, what is your take on lighting choices? Specifically the quantity and if it is too bright. I am in the process of doing my puck light layout and I am thinking of having about half as many as you designed. Could you do with less? For instance, I have two over the bed and two down the hall area with only one over the bench seat. Your build vlog has been super helpful! I appreciate the time you guys put into it. Do you have plans on posting the final cost run up? Thanks again!

Thanks for this, very informative. I am about to do prewiring this week in my 2015 Transit. Much appreciated. I'm right at the same spot in my van conversion, so I'm excited even though I have no experince so again thank you.

Thank you, hope your build is going well! We don’t have any experience either, so watching videos and reading blogs from others has been so helpful for us.

@@britandmike Agree. RU-vid and some other websites have been great. I’m right at the beginning of trying to design the electrical component layout. And also build some kind of box container for them and the batteries.

I love your content, and am following you, and will reference you when I get to my own build. But for the life of me, I can't figure how you did an electrical vlog without talking about wiring up your solar cells, shore power, alternator charging, and the inverter/chargers you used. The very CORE of your electrical system. Wire thickness. How you arrived at the choices you did. You completely glossed over all of the parts that intimidate most everyone who has never done this, but wants to.

Thanks for your comment - I don't think we have actually gotten to the part of the build yet that you're describing, at least not fully. This video was basically more about laying the wire for our lights/outlets/fan etc. so that we could build up the walls. We haven't installed any of the actual components yet like inverter/batteries/etc. Mike installed the solar panels in ep. 6 and ran the wire for the battery isolation manager that we plan to use for alternator charging in ep. 13, but we haven't hooked anything up yet. We will definitely show how we hook up everything in our system when we get there, but we have been relying on lots of videos and blog posts from people who know much more than us, so we are not experts! The wires we used for this video were: Shore power inlet: 8/3 AWG Triplex Flat AC Marine Wire 12 volt outlets/appliances: Marine Grade 12/2 AWG Electrical Duplex Wire 120 volt outlets: Marine Grade 12/3 AWG Electrical Triplex Wire

Thank you somuch for providing the kind of wire. I have been searching for this information for a while.

If your lights are daisy chained together, does that mean that if one goes out they will all go out (like in Christmas lights)? Trying to figure out my setup atm! Cheers for the vids :)

Hi Guys, are you happy with these two choices of wire, about to purchase myself. The 12/2 AWG will do all 12V utilities ? Thanks as always, Andy Marine Grade 12/2 AWG Electrical Duplex Wire (200 feet, for 12V outlets Marine Grade 12/3 AWG Electrical Triplex Wire (100 feet, for 120V outlets

Yes we are happy with them, we have had no complaints or issues on our end! We are pretty confident the wires we picked will be durable.

Did you connect a voltage regulator for your Maxxfan? I have seen a lot of discussions about low and high voltage issues.

I am very confused with the Explorist. I went thru and added my components and when I add up its 1070 only charge 9.99 for the plans, but then the invoice total is over $1900. They Built in $900 for what? I need to get going but this is throwing me. Tyia! 🥺
@britandmike
@britandmike Год назад
Sorry, I'm not sure because we didn't buy any components from Explorist, only the wiring diagram. Maybe it is due to taxes, customs, or shipping charges? We bought all of our wire from Amazon and then all of our electrical components + batteries in a 400 Ah van kit from Battle Born.

Looks like you were able to route all of the wires through the upper, lower, and rear cavities without drilling any large holes. Correct?
@britandmike
@britandmike 2 года назад
Correct! We didn’t want to drill holes in the walls because it’s really hard to collect all the metal shavings and we didn’t need to.
@steveocheltree3575
@steveocheltree3575 2 года назад
@@britandmike Thanks! Yes, very difficult to remove all of the shavings. I saw AVC RIG drilling 1/2"-3/4" holes and then placing bushings into the holes. No thanks!

Hi quick question, did you use multi strand wires or solid cores? As your 120v looks like solid which is prone to vibration breaking being in a vehicle!
@britandmike
@britandmike 2 года назад
We used marine grade stranded wire! We definitely had the same concerns.
