Starting My $300 Porsche Cayenne S After Replacing the Destroyed V8 Engine 

The thing is: you never know with a used engine. I've been the victim of that twice now. Yard "says" the engine is good, you install it and hope for the best.

It is ,I had the V10 Vw touareg(same as hoovies porsche)I would get maybe 4-5 moths of no issues then a big bill, even under warranty it was always at the VW dealer.

I have owned a cayenne s for 7 years and have put 70k on the clock (165k now). Almost no problems. Also own a cayman s two 928 s4, landrover and BMW..... All are not a lot of maintenance.

Exactly, I said the same thing before I saw this. Also possible leaking injectors washing down cylinders when parked further contribute to the issue. 4 cats, and a shitty designed engine, no sugar needed. Mine(2008 4.8 S)went out at 108k due to this, I live in Minnesota, this is 100% the issue.

Im a used car dealer in minnesota. I had 3 of those V8 Porsches with scuffed up cylinders, even from warmer states! Complete garbage of an engine. This is not a "sabotage", this is "shitty engineering ".

Considering buying turbo version soon, I guess the block on turbo models are better?

@@zxy1987106 yes, I own a cayenne turbo for that reason. They have one thou more piston to cylinder clearance. Much more reliable

@@zxy1987106 From what I read its not the block but the turbos have extra oilers that keep the cylinders better lubricanted and help prevent it, they do have the issue though, if I recall the GTS also has the oilers, the S does not. If you live in a warmer climate or have a even slightly warmer garage you should be fine, on this issue, the coolant pipe flaw, drive shaft carrier bearing, high pressure fuel pump are other issues to look out for. If you hear any kind of ticking that is above barely audible from the engine or if it cranks even one second too long run away. I spent many many hours researching this when mine failed because I had a 3rd party warranty that wanted to give me 2k to "resleeve" the one cylinder and wouldn't budge when I told them their repair book was crap, I spent probably 15 hours arguing on the phone with them and atleast double that researching, I read every page on the internet that exists about this, that said it was a few years ago so my details could be slightly off. In the end they paid 9k for the 11k engine replacement, they were liable for all but $100 but they wore me out.

I was hoping for the same thing, but the borescope already shows it's a bore issue.

Scoring appears to happen more frequently in cold climates. Another interesting thing is there have been 5 updates to the oil pump and a new style windage tray." Sounds like thick oil not getting through via cold climate / oil pump design.

@@mikeb3172 it's the clearance between the piston and cylinder. the piston expands in cold climate and doesn’t have enough clearance. cold starts and long warm ups with out moving.... scoring occurs. engine burns oil, tapping starts, spark plugs start to foul and throw CE lights. then the engine just seizes one day.

It could also be caused by 'bore wash' where excess fuel condenses on cold cylinder walls on start up and 'washes' the oil film off of the cylinder. One of a hundred causes!

US emissions regs are a lot sillier than most other countries. I saw 6 cats on a 25 year old mustang!

Oddly enough too the cayenne will run way better without the secondary cats. But not like this setup lmao

@@EazyDuz18 They suspected vandalism, but it's a common failing point and Hoovie clearly saw Chris Fix's recent video on his (obviously set up) "sugar in the fuel system," which must have put that in his mind. Under no other circumstances would you suspect sugar causing an engine to seize.

@@boilerhousegarage I always thought sugar in the tank would be a problem for the fuel system specifically (clogging injectors, filters, etc.). No way sugar could be hard enough to scratch metal, right?

Jep, best to get the post-07 facelift engines, afaik the problem was fixed when they moved to the 4.8’s.

Newer cars are less likely to mess up with sugar in the tank. Either way, it’s still very possible to get into the engine. Just hope you don’t run it too much and your filter is in good shape!

I'm confused; you said scored walls are common but you're telling everyone to get them?

4.5 and 4.8 same thing, the turbos I think have oilers or something that help but still an issue. I had one(a 2008 S) and definitely regret it. Do not buy one of these if you ever need to start your car in temperatures under 40 degrees, if you live in florida go for it.

How does the scoring cause the engine to lock solid though? It was cranking, rotating but not even running, and then just stopped dead.

In my Kia, they have issues with the rod bearings wearing down and the piston will start to rock in its cylinder, touching the sides, burning oil, and eventually it'll crack and lock.

If you’re really passionate about the car. I’m a mechanic and I have this elderly customer with a 2004 BMW 760li. That thing is guaranteed is be leaking oil once it rolls into the shop and he spent thousands upon thousands keeping it on the road, but the customer seems to love that car and even stated he’d take it over a more reliable Toyota or even a newer 7 series.

The news is attempting to do that with Biden. It’s not worth it.

Not strange at all, its a known issue with these engines. Has to do with cold weather and contraction of the cylinders vs pistons, and a couple other things, they are shitty designed engines if you live anywhere it gets below 30 degrees.
