I took an old 'half' apron (cut off the chest part) Attached big buttons to the top at the hip area, and cut holes big enough to fit them at the two bottom corners. When I need to harvest tomatoes, beans or cucumbers, I just pull up the corners, button them and fill it up. When I go inside I set up a bowl on a stool thats the right height, unbutton and slide them into the bowl for washing.

Oh man. This popped up on my recommended videos. It has been a very emotional day due to some devastating news we received. As I was watching all of sudden Rachel pops off with “don’t need to buy no fancy basket” and the look on her face and the silly basket almost dragging the ground on her tiny frame just hit me and I started into a hysterical laughing fit, I rewatched that part 5 times. I know the video is old but thank you. For a few minutes I forgot the pain and just laughed. ❤

I talk to my plants all the time. The celery should say on the package whether it's self-blanching or not. If you bought starts, you could look up the type of celery online and research what it's properties are. As to how to do the tieing up, I don't know, as I've not grown celery before, except the year it got hit by a flood! I love James Prigioni too-very knowledgable guy. Thank you, Rachel🌻

I have had almost no hornworms this year either and I really think it is the sunflowers! Not because they repel them, but because they draw in the birds. I have had so many little birds eating my sunflower seeds and darting in and out of my tomato plants. They aren't hurting my tomatoes but I believe they are eating the hornworms because I have seen the tell-tale poop, but no worms or damage! 💕

It’s been a very interesting grow season here in Most Southern Illinois. I bought a stack of dollar tree -wire baskets (small trash basket shape). I used then to protect seedlings earlier….now later in season.. I clip them to an old adjustable purse strap and wear for harvesting.

My sister grew celery last year and didn't bother tying the bunches to blanch them. And said she loved the flavor so much more than normal, store bought, and blanched, celery. So she's not blanching her celery or cauliflower. She cuts her celery off at the base when she wants to, leaves the roots, and they regrew in the spring. One of her four celery plants lived but her second year seed growing process is almost done now. I hope that helped. I've never grown celery for myself but I might try that in the springtime. You always have nice garden tours Rachel!

This is my second year growing celery. I grow Utah Tall which is self-blanching. It's really an easy, no worry crop. You can harvest and use individual stalks throughout the growing season, then just harvest the entire plant before the first frost. I'm still using frozen celery from last year's garden in soups and stews, and since you can continually harvest throughtout the season, I only grew 4 plants. It's a wonderful and easy crop to grow.

I just harvest my celery as it grows then chop and freeze it. I never cut the whole head off at once as it keeps growing. Homegrown celery def has a stronger flavor than store bought.

Think about how all other vines behave 🤔indoor plants, veggies, ornamental and otherwise, give them soil and they will grow. As a physician I instinctively dug out a vine borer and buried the damaged squash vine in the dirt and voila! More squash. Happy harvesting! 😀

Some harvest green beans in the morning when. The plants are wet. I was always told not to touch the plants until they are dry because that will cause rust on the plant.

I just learned that if you top your onions.... you can make onion "pesto" with them adding what ever nuts you have or prefer ( hazelnuts, pine nuts, walnuts), garlic and olive oil? I haven't tried it myself yet... but watched Acre Homestead make this. What a great alternative to drying the tops.

Please don’t pull the male flower off to pollinate use a small paint brush to pollinate your female flower that way the bees can still use it we do this all the time and is great.and your celery self blanching means the branches will have a good section on the branch that is white if not all tou do is mount some dirt around and it will blanch itself since no more light hitting the branch. You can also pick one at a time that is what I am doing right now to dehydrate. Happy gardening

Hello. Carrots and tomatoes give each other nutrients and are considered companion plants. I never have had luck planting carrots. The only time we have had them is when they are near tomatoes. I do alot of companion planting and put basil, thyme or oregano in between my tomato plants and it works to keep pest away. I haven't had pests in my tomatoes for at least 5 years. The herbs give nutrients to the tomato plants and vise versa. The herbs I grow are for my spaghetti sauce. 😋 I have only seen Japanese beetles on my pole beans. Everyone is having a hard time getting things to grow or having an odd year. We planted 60 onions and they are all small still. Not sure why. I just don't have any luck with onions or carrots here. 😕 Glad you have better luck than I do. Thanx again for a great video!

We typically get up to 70 mph winds in Cheyenne WY and I typically plant my corn deeper than most, about 3 or 4 inches, then when it comes up to about 2 weeks old, I hoe it and pull the dirt up around the root ball more and continue doing that every few weeks from then on. I also companion plant with pole beans and Tahitian squash or some sort of squash every season. I did the same when I lived in East Tennessee. I've not had any of my corn blown over. I had all my corn blow over one time before I started this process and I waited a few days and the corn stood back up on its own. If you think it is going to die, though, you might want to snag a bag of Early Sunglow Hybrid corn and you'll have corn before you get frost where you are. They're typically mature in 62 days.

It has been a very odd year for our vegetable garden. We didn't get any beans this year, due to the late freeze, a lot of rain, minimal sun and then we got temperatures in the mid 90's and on up...its been a crazy year. Our Roma's look funny, but still edible. Just a really strange year. Finished with the green tomato salsa, time to put up my feet...😊😊. Have a blessed day...

Go ahead and invest in the over the shoulder harvest bucket. I love mine. The padded strap on the back distributes the weight of the vegetables so well. I'm in SE Michigan, and this is the second year growing onions from seed. I have Patterson, Blush, Redwing, and Talon already curing in the garage. If you multisow in a 72-cell tray, 2-3 seeds per cell leaves enough space to let them grow big for transplant. You can then thin them or not. Might be easier than pricking them out as tiny sprigs!

@Amanda R ... Becky is just something, isn't she? I'm so impressed with how much knowledge she has for this only being her 2 gardening year! She gives Rachael here at that 1870's homestead a lot of credit for her success. I like it when people give a shout out to the ones that help them. She also does what I see as secondary harvests like you mentioned about powdering certain things, etc. Her canning skills are coming right along too & if you asked her, she'd say this channel & Rachael helped her there too! Wish I had her energy even just 1 day a week! But Rachael... your garden is amazing & I love all your videos canning and gardening alike. Warms my heart when you & Todd work together. God bless all! Make it a great week.

All of my pole beans and yard long beans are flowering and I just picked a few dinners worth of wax bush beans. My zucchini and yellow squash finally started growing fruits. But im very pleased with my Asian eggplants we've eaten 4 already and one plant has 7 fruits and is loaded with blooms.(Chinese String is the variety). The tomatoes are loaded but no signs of ripening yet. But I finally have cucumbers. I am growing them hydroponically and next year I'm not going to even plant in the ground and I'm going to just add more buckets to the greenhouse. I have celery in hydro buckets too. Its growing phenomenally compared to all my prior efforts in the ground. The pink celery has a stronger flavor but it is still yummy! I do need to learn to stagger my plantings as im going to have 10 heads of green celery at once and a few weeks later 10 of pink! Lol. I might have to do some freezing.
@Emeraldwitch30
@Emeraldwitch30 3 года назад
Oh on harvesting celery you can pull outer stalks and use as needed. Celery is edible no matter the size. My aunt made wraps of newspaper to blanch her celery while my late father in law said the commercial celery fields that were in rows just laid 12 inch boards up along both sides of the row so that just the tops peeked out. They tipped the boards onto the ground to harvest.

I have only had one horn worm this year also. The parasitic wasps took care of my hornworms last year. In my bed with the tomatoes are basil, marigolds, zucchini, borage, phacelia, and nasturtium. Bug pressure has been lite in my garden again other than the little green bugs that suck on my bean plants as I try to use companion planting to confuse the bugs.

I got my onions the same place as you and because of their crazy weather followed by our crazy weather the onions freaked out and about half of them bolted. I also started some from seed, which is incredibly easy, and they did not bolt. But they were planted just a little later outside, at a much smaller size, and they only went through our crazy weather. The bottom line is I think I'm still learning to grow onions. Next year I'm going to try a little more fertilizer.

After that, I took the covers off and I then strung them to strings on the trellises. I think the time they had under the covers stopped when the moths usually leave their eggs. I've only found 1 small worm in all of my 50+ tomato plants.

I had my best onion year this year. I put the onion sets/starts, whatever they are called in the ground, left more of it showing than I normally do. I also didn't cut anything off the green the whole time and my onions got really big.

I agree with you on the onions. I also got mine from them and less than 20% have survived and not doing good!!

I talk to myself in the garden as well - I know my neighbors think I'm bonkers :) I didn't get any beans this year because of rabbits. They were loaded with beans too and they ate every single one and just left little sticks poking out of the ground. I was distracted this week because my mom's been sick and just not being out there and having the dog out there, they just had a dang feast. I think I still have time to plant some though, erg...... this is the time of the year when it feels like things are on the verge of chaos in the garden :) When I think I might not be able to keep up with it. But we will prevail.

Watching the video now 💚 as going back over some. It’s easy to assume you have so much energy as we only see that mostly but I know how much work all of this is… how do you manage the tiredness, do you get days when you’re just too darn tired and do you push through anyway?

I hilled my celery at an earlier stage than yours is so I wouldn't bother doing it where yours r at. I am in MN and I harvested all my celery a month ago. I personally look at the size of the plant and when mine looked like yours I harvested one to taste and I think the sooner the better so it doesn't get bitter. I bet yours is ready.

I read that the copra onion is now extinct. I'll try the Patterson this year. I had hoped to buy the copra.

Also started my onions from seeds this year (patterson yellow onions. They were ready super early so pulled them out. I planted some more from sets hoping to get lucky with a warm fall here in 5b. Sad to hear the corn isn't getting better...

I bought onion starts from Dixon Dale and they were doing really awesome until we got non stop rain that last few weeks, I actually had to pull some because they died off, small little bulbs, I kept the rest in and fed them, but they seemed to be stunted. So, maybe I'll get a few small bulbs. We'll see.

I planted borage in front of my tomatoes and I only had 1 hornworm. So unusual for my garden. Maybe it is the unusual weather or the borage. I'll try it again next year and see if I get lucky again.
