That comment about how you "don't do the right technique" irked me so much, it's frankly a lowkey elitist comment, when taking into account the history of fiber crafts. There are HUNDREDS of way to knit and crochet, based on culture and geographic location and who you learned from. To say that someone has "no technique" is so rude and ignorant because that person is an example of a line of crafters stretching back to who knows when, saying it's no technique just is terrible to say. But I'll get off my milk crate. As a knitter of 15 years and a crocheter of 10 I think you're doing fantastic work and it warms my heart and makes me happy stim to see you partake in the same crafts as me. Maybe a virtual crafting group is in order 👀 Anyways, loved the video, you fill me with inspiration!

Hi Immy....I am 61 and always eager to learn something new. I love using what I already have . I cut up old clothes to make cloth napkins...pot holders...bowl cozies. I have been finding old interesting sheets to make dresses and skirts. I quilt and love using old things in my quilts. I just crocheted a colorful granny square sweater and now making a daisy granny square sweater. In between working on the sweater I am making tobagans for Christmas presents. Using old linen clothes to make bowl covers and napkins. Retired and loving the creative life!! We have a Farmstead and living more a more self- sustaining life is so rewarding...fills your spirit ❤

WAIT… doing the simple math here… if you’re learning this many amazing new things and having this much fun in your 30’s, and I am 60, should I be learning twice as much and be having double the fun? If so… yikes, I need to get my butt in gear now!! Haha!! I just had to ask!! I’ve just started watching the video and I know it’s going to be a good ‘un!! Ⓜary💕

Last year, at age 38, I decided to take up acrylic painting. Last art class I had was in the 6th grade, so I’m completely winging it and learning as I go. But, it brings me so much peace and I’m really enjoying learning new techniques and being able to see my progress. I often remind myself “it doesn’t have to be *good*, it just has to be.”

I learned to knit during the pandemic, at age 49, via RU-vid. My technique is “a bit of this and a bit of that”. It works for me. If what you’re doing produces the results you want then who cares what anyone thinks. I know my weaknesses and will seek out help when needed. Learning something new is fun! Hobbies are supposed to be enjoyable. Just because you’re “old” doesn’t mean you’re useless and can’t learn 🤦🏻‍♀️. Learning is a lifelong endeavour we can all pursue 😀

I think as we get older we tend to pick-up these hobbies that we truly enjoyed as kids! Being in the nature, painting, work with clay ... - we didn´t care then, we just enjoyed the moment as kids and now as we get older we don´t care either :-) As we get older we just care less about perfection and want to enjoy the moment and the process more than the result.

I am 30 and have been on a journey to discover myself for a couple years now after having a quarter life crisis at 25 (yes they're very real). I left the industry I went to school for and have been using minimalism to lead my way of life ever since. I am figuring out what I like to do and how I should spend my time instead of doing what I was told by my family and society. My most recent hobby has been zentangling as it helps me feel creative again.

Do not be put off with the crafting. When I first started crochet when I was ten I could not fathom out the tension thing with the finger. I therefore basically used to crochet with a hook like you do finger knitting and it worked which was all that mattered then. Crochet was something that my Mum could not do, but she was a perfectionist with embroidery, knitting and everything else. Whilst at College we used to have free time for a full afternoon a week and I chose to do crafting. The Tutor took one look at my technique and did square me up with using the upright finger for tension. My tension did improve as a result, but it felt very alien to work like this to start with. I have always been one to learn by making mistakes and a friend encouraged me to have another go at crafting by telling me that each piece of work you create is yours. It is full of love and mistakes as making mistakes is quite a natural thing. Those little mistakes differentiate it as your piece of work and next time you have a go, you know what to do and how to avoid that mistake. That is how you learn. Your tension though is very good and as long as you are enjoying the creating and making that is all that matters carry on working how you feel happiest. I love all sorts of crafting my one problem is proper amounts of time to do everything. Keeping busy with your hands is something I have to do even when I am watching TV or should I say listening. Keep up the good work. Love your approach to crafting, gardening and cooking. Tricia x

So happy you love climbing! My husband introduced me to it 3 months into dating, and as a very chubby gal I thought I had NO chance. Loved it! And the community is amazing! You just go out on the rock and have fun! Haven’t climbed in over a year (since I got pregnant in December 2022) because our lives have shifted so much in a great way, but I’m inspired to really try to get back out there ❤

I can relate to the spending more time with friends in 20's and later seeing them less. Mostly because people move from town to another, switching jobs. Hobbies are great. Looking up the definition was funny. I took climbing lessons too and then we went climbing couple of times with my BF (or was it just a friend back then?🤭) Good to have someone to water the garden. Last year I picked up watercolor painting again. Even if I pick up the brush once a month it still makes me happy. Thank you for a lovely video. I am happy YT will be your focus now 💛💚🩵

4:30 - Immy, I noticed you have another new hobby… handy-dandy repair jobs using what you have on-hand. I am loving the carabiner repair job on the strap of your overalls!! OK, hobby loving gal here who just has to ask… is anybody out there in Viewer Land into skill toys? It’s my thang… freestyle yoyo, kendama, begleri, deadeye coins… there is just something about using the fine motor skills and kinesthetic motion of one’s hands to skillfully and mindfully connect with the brain. I have so much fun learning, teaching, performing and sharing the joy of skill toys with others. Small additional bonus… the kids in the high school where I teach think I am really cool when I perform and/or teach them tricks. It is such a win-win for me! Hey, Immy, I’m really interested in your video idea about making friends in your adult years. I am 60 and all my long-time friends are retired and they are invested in the lives of their kids and grandkids. I am not retired, I don’t have kids or grandkids, and all my newer friends are literally less than half my age. I love it, it keeps me young and I feel so lucky to have so much love in my life, but I would love to make friends with more like-minded people. I think this is a great topic for a video and I can imagine that the comments for such a video would be very interesting and really enriching too. Thanks so much for another great video, and also for all that you do. You’re amazing!! Ⓜary💕

no technique?! I don't crochet but thought those granny squares were super cute. I create art, mostly lettering inspirational quotes, that may sound cheesy but they are all things that have helped my mental health. I do try and sell prints but only because sharing with others that need to hear the same things brings me joy.

I learned to crochet from youtube during the pandemic to pass the time during the winters (in Michigan) when I wasn't working remotely. Started with hats and now onto sweaters. In the summer I planted and grew lemon balm, anise hyssop and mint to make my own tea. I bought this book the Organic Artist by Nick Neddo and learned to make inks and paints from local plants. Oh yeah, also I'm in my 50s. 😉

The idea of technique being "wrong" for crochet is so baffling to me, as someone who's been doing it for 20 years. My methods have changed plenty of times, and they vary widely day-to-day depending on the type of yarn, hook size, wrist pain levels, etc. All that matters is that you're comfortable and you're able to accomplish what you want with your project. Keep doing what you're doing! Also, I would definitely love to see a video about making friends in your 30s! I've moved around several times in my 20s and now that I'm in my 30s my partner and I are about to make our final move for (hopefully) a very, very long time. I'm naturally quite introverted, so any tips on how to get out there and meet people would be super helpful!!

There's no age to learn something new. However, I have to say that I started doing more things later in life. Now that my father passed away, I found myself taking care of our olive trees and garden (vegetable garden too). Once I thought it was just a heavy job, now I think it's the greatest hobby. Spending time outside is wonderful and I feel blessed. It calms me down although yes, it is tiring! I also started doing crochet. No, I am not that good and my tecnique is bad for sure, but who cares? I made my first granny square jumper and it turned out so cute! Yes, there are mistakes in it but I love it, it's colourful and I feel so proud of myself by finishing it. I am doing another jumper, this time a top down one. It's hard, but it's a great hobby and it relaxes my mind. I listen to books while doing it. And I am reading more than I used in the past too. I am thinking of including other hobbies too in my life...ballet would be good. I don't have the right body and it is stiff as a tree, however, I used to belly dance in the past so I guess I can try ballet now, just for fun. Hobbies are meant to calm down, to make you happier and mindful about your life. Whoever thinks that they have to be perfect, probably asks too much to theirselves and live a stressful life. Thank you for your videos. Please don't concentrate too much on your age, because it is just a number. 😉

Last year I grew some tomatoes and this year I’ve got my own mini vegetable garden and I’m so proud! On a similar note I have a small collection of houseplants that give so much joy all year round. I’ve recently started to learn to knit but also like cross-stitch/embroidery/hand sewing issues with clothing. I’d really love to do more pottery this year both hand and wheel throwing and also painting but it’s a bit expensive so we’ll have to see how things go :)

I would love to see the "making friends in your 30s" video. I'm only 25 but we just moved to a new city and while I've tried a couple of things, I've not had great success in finding friends! Also, I just started reading some books that are *so* good and I wanted to recommend them to the community.--Body Respect by Linda Bacon et all, and Anti-Diet by Christy Harrison. They talk about reclaiming your right to eat food--any food--diet culture, and eating disorders. It's been really interesting and has led me down a whole rabbit whole of books on diet culture and fat-phobia. Super interesting! (some of the books dislike veganism, but specifically if someone is going vegan with the hope of weight loss as opposed to ethical or moral reasons, fair warning)

Yes! There is so much pressure about being good at hobbies for some reason and it's absolutely unnecessary. I learned knitting last year and also got a little bit more confident in using a sewing machine. I'm an avid hand sewer but machines freaked me out for a long time :D Want to learn how to crotched this year :) Also just joined a choir again after a long break and it's soooo good! I like what you said about not being good at hobbies. I'm my harshest judge when it comes to playing the piano or drawing, to the point where I don't even start doing it because it isn't perfect. Seeing the pure joy on your face when climbing or gardening or crocheting, I feel I can let go of the pressure too, eventually. Also, you made me think about getting back to bouldering. 👀

Hi Immy, fellow climber here :). I'm happy that you enjoy it so much and that you made such a remarkable progress in only a year! Wow! :) I climbed a bit with my Dad when I was little but rediscovered it with my then new bf after I got divorced in my late 20s. I'm also mega afraid of heights... can't even cross a tall bridge in the city where I live without having vertigo. I always thought climbing was completely out of my reach but it turns out it wasn't! I met some great people in the community and I dared to try to climb harder and harder routes, it's difficult but also satisfying and I can't imagine any other activity that would bring me closer to my bf/climbing partner. I love how grounded one can feel while climbing, I love the surroundings, I love that I can get to places I wouldn't have thought possible to get to just a decade ago. :) Also I love climbing on limestone and discovering little fossils of sea shells or other small animals or getting to know the plants that grow on the rocks.

I believe every animal on this earth just LOVES to feel good. So of course we do things to feel good, joy. Essentially, I think that's the general goal of our daily lifes/routines. My cat confirms this theory. Being genuine and true to ourselves, looking for things that feel good. Many different things can feel good and varies depending on the person. Not only activities, but also sense of direction, or stability, or silence... Anything. It's a vast spectrum. I think the word "hobbie" exists bc we are forced to perform in activities we do not enjoy, and also nowadays jobs, so we had to come up with a definition for "enjoyable free time activity". I like to believe that in an ideal reality, we would all spend most of our time doing things that we love, distributing specific tasks to those who enjoy them the most, supporting this concept as a community. Thank you for your video, I am vibing with you. I'll subscribe.

I was actually inspired to make the bucket hat you made. Sadly it was way too big and I tried it three times. It was my first crochet project and I am determined to try again. My friend loved the first hat and it fits her quite well. I also discoverd knitting last year (you've been my inspiration in that too) and I am loving it!! It is so special to work on the clothes you wear. 🥰 I hope to someday learn sewing, but that is for future me when I do not have to study for the second german exam to become a doctor 😅 But I am looking forward to it :) I absolutely love your videos! Thanks for doing them! 💕 (Sorry for the horrible spelling and grammar…)

Thanks for the video. I can’t wait to see your vegan cheese adventures. Also, I can’t believe the nerve of someone to say you’re not doing something right. I love your response!

I’m 62 years old and I climb indoors. I’m also scared of heights and I know I won’t heal as fast as when I was younger her, so indoors is good for me 😊

I started knitting not too long ago and my first knit was a baby blanket for my cousin's little one. :) I learned so, so much by doing it and it was a joy to catch how I felt when I was a kid digging through my gran's cabinets to do a new craft. Most recently I am trying to get a bit more "serious" about zines being a hobby of mine. I adore self-publication and the idea of helping others do it too.

My main hobby is to learn new stuff :D I’ve recently got into learning spanish and arabic, taking a course to be an animal hospice practitioner, learning about permaculture, birding and I restarted my hobbies from my childhood, painting, drawing horses, cross stitching :)) and of course gardening, preserving but those are more practical hobbies maybe :D I need to restart horse riding when I lose some weight, because that is what climbing is for you! No thoughts, just happiness :)) (I’ve been subscribed since yesterday and I am binge watching your videos since then :D I want to incorporate more vegan food in my life for sustainability and health reasons and going full vegan is quite overwhelming for now, so I just want to change most of my lunches to vegan at first :)))

Great video ☺️☺️ i started crocheting and then knitting durin Corona. Learning everything from RU-vid, worked great since I'm a visual learner 😁 living in a house for the last year has given me the opportunity to garden a lot which is so good for my mind. Something I want to get into again is running, started a couple of years ago but quit when I got pregnant..

If you’re ever looking for good seed that has always had good germination, I’ll recommend MIgardener. They’re based in the US. Great quantity for the price and I’ve never had trouble with germination. Another couple of new favourites are True Love seeds and Experimental Farm Network. The seed has a higher cost, but it goes toward the farmer and donations. Some exceptionally good seed and hard to find varieties! Highly recommend them. 😄 Knitting and gardening for me have always been crafts and hobbies I can enjoy as a way to destress, meditate, and relax. As a knitter, you always get that question “Can you make me this?” from friends or coworkers, but I always explain my “sorry, no” with what the craft means to me, so they understand. 😅

here in finland we had this homemade vegan cheese basically go viral - it was a 2-ingredient cheese (not counting spices) that you could slice with a cheese slicer (a very finnish thing). it's made from agar agar and oat cooking cream! I tried it, but it wasn't really my thing. it's okay tho, cheese slices have never been my favorite thing anyway! just wanted to share cause I think homemade vegan cheeses are super interesting!

Thank you in advance for the video on making friends in your 30s-definitely an important one, esp with how much loneliness and disconnection is going around. Btw for your french learning: have you checked out the Alliance Francaise in Denver? They usually have cool events and classes and films

It bugs me when people in the fiber arts community have an opinion about other people’s technique. I have psoriatic arthritis, so I hold my tension and tools in a way that is comfortable for me. I literally knit and crochet for a living and occasionally someone feels the need to inform me that my technique is incorrect because it’s not the same as theirs. If you are creating the correct stitch at the correct gauge, your method of holding your tools does not matter. Don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise, they’re just attempting to feel superior.

Have you ever tried using tshirt yarn to crochet? You can make your own out of old tshirts! Would love to see you take that on possibly!!

In my thirties I learned patchwork, it's such a nice hobby and you can reuse fabrics or old clothes etc. that you would otherwise have taken to the recycling center. For example, a patchwork friend made a patchwork blanket out of all her husband's old shirts. I also like to sew in other ways, not only curtains and decorations, but also individualize clothes, especially things I like to buy. Or sew small dragon etc. for the kiddies. Totebags with a thousand and one compartments, also from beautiful tea towels, because you can then put them in the cooking laundry. I also like to grow fruit and vegetables myself, today I had my first raspberry harvest, delicious. This year I only have raspberries, strawberries, various leaf lettuce, spinach, peppers and nasturtiums. Laurel tree and rosemary moved with me 15 years ago. I also bake bread... inevitably, because I bake without gluten and without wheat. I love cooking and trying out new recipes. Greetings from cologne Andy

Recently I've been interested in cooking. In the past I was very nervous and anxious when someone was around me when I was cooking. Now I enjoy it. I love learning new ingredients and trying to combine them into something I'll like. Today I decided to order a wetstone, a scale and a big good knife. I know it may sound too much buying stuff, but I believe those would be very useful. I also came up with the idea of growing my own greens like green onion and spring garlic. So I'm gonna try it then. It's been a long time since I really did something as a hobby and enjoy it. I feel inner peace doing those.

I'm not sure which is braver--climbing or unravelling your knitting!! I couldn't have done that with the first thing I ever knitted!! Good for you. Your attitude toward the technique of crochet is my attitude to my piano playing, which I love--but I know I'm not great at it, and I don't care!

I started machine sewing at 60 last year. At the moment I'm making bags from old materials such as curtains and sheets, I hope to start selling them. I would like to start making my own clothes, though I am a little nervous.

I'm in my forties and also interested in making new friends, not necessarily in a new city but after a lot of people moving away or being in a different stage of life (e.g. having children and me being childfree). I don't really enjoy using apps for meeting new people. Curious to learn about what helped you in making new friends!

Whoever critiqued your crotchet technique would cringe at mine! I have tried and tried to hold the hook and yarn in the traditional way, but it just doesn't work for me. But guess what, my result is still the same 🙂

Wild someone would say you were bad and had no technique. I guess me too! Cuz I taught myself. I didnt even know there were "Techniques" aside from the way other people hold there hooks. But at the end of the day, if what you are making looks the way you want it to, they can take their technique and put it somewhere else. 😛

Hi I love your ethos. I hope you can help me. I am on the fence about wool as a vegan. Can you help me with your mindset on the subject. I keep going around with it. I think a sheep has to be shorn, I believe it is cruel to leave them but it is not always a kind experience for the sheep. This is after watching videos on keeping sheep. Am I being a bit naive? I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Is there going to be a book? A lot of your recipes look very nourishing and I’d love to learn how to make tempeh. Keep going.
