You will not damage your child by saying " No " You are the parents and you set the boundaries . Kids like to hear No from you to reassure them that they are being safe / loved and following guidance from you .

Boundaries are ok! Especially when your newborn is sleeping! It will also help him when it’s school time...teachers Will give him lots of boundaries. It will be good for him to have more at home so he is used to knowing what he can and cannot do! I think you are wonderful parents… Don’t doubt yourself and don’t be afraid of saying no!

physical reminders can help little ones- A scarf, sticker, or other symbol (Jackson can even be empowered to pick) put on Oliver's crib or any other sleeping space to remind him of Oliver's private, quiet or nap time. You are fab!

As a former preschool teacher for 13 years, keep in mind that he may change at drop off but HONESTLY he will be okay. It's best to show confidence and let him know how you'll say goodbye, and stick to it. I promise you, he will be okay - even if you see him having a huge meltdown, it doesn't last long and the kiddos ALWAYS find fun soon after the hard goodbyes.

Yes! I have been a K teacher for 16 years and completely agree. #1 Usually (not always) kids that have a hard time separating is because they pick up on that the parents are anxious and worried. So even if you are, try your best to hide it from them. #2 Kids that scream and cry are literally fine in seconds. As soon as they can't see their parents, they get distracted easily and have a great rest of the day. #3. It is good for kids AND parents to not know every single little thing that happens in a day. If it was managed fine in the classroom or they resolved it themselves, they are on the right track to be resilient and that is the ultimate goal.

Couldn't agree more. Used to work in a Kindergarten classroom and about 5 minutes into their day, they're fine. As with all of us, sometimes we just have difficult starts to our day!

Kindergarten teacher here in her 35th year! Jackson's enthusiasm is great, and you have prepared him well! He needs opportunities now to learn to calm himself if he is sad, which rarely lasts more than a few minutes and have some productive struggles where he has to do the problem solving. You are so amazing that at three he's able to do that! I laughed about how he couldn't remember what he had done all day. We get that all the time so I have a blog to help my parents know what we did so they can ask some questions. But you already knew how to break it down and get him to talk! I'm so happy for Jackson. How lucky is that preschool to get Jackson!

100% I have four boys and I majored in psych. The first three hopped on the bus everyday and never looked back. The fourth (of course) cried for half a year. And I had to do what I knew inherently was the right thing and just GO! but some days that broke my heart. We laugh now that he'll be a Frosh in hs and he says he remembers but only being sad at first when I left. Jackson does NOT seem to be in that situation at all, luckily! You'll all do awesome!

I work as a director of a large preschool. Thank you for sharing this perspective… I want to have all our teachers watch this so they remember how nerve wracking it is for parents to send their child to a place with a bunch of strangers! I wish I could say the same. My son was the only one in his pre-K class that cried. It broke my heart to leave him there. This continued for the first few weeks. I would just sit in my car and cry too.

I've been teaching little ones for 35 years. I wonder if Jackson's "missing mummy" tears coincide with end of day tiredness, linked with him being asked/expected to do something he wasn't keen on doing (mat time/quiet time) at that low energy point. There is that element of "I didn't ask if you wanted to .... eg sit quietly....but i am expecting that you'll do it" It's tricky for little ones to learn that there's a "we" as well as an "I" in a classroom setting. He's doing really well. I'd love to be his teacher ❤

I love listening to your journey with all of Jackson’s milestones. It brings me back to when my 30 year old son was heading to preschool for the first time. We dropped him off and said goodbye. I turn around and my husband (retired police officer) is all teary eyed. LOL. Goes to the window and wanted to just stay there for the day to make sure he was going to be ok. I convinced him it was important that our son learn how to navigate these new adventures and we headed home to sit….for 4 hours….until we could pick him up. The anxiety you are feeling is valid but know that Jackson is a very smart young man. I look forward to hear how his school days go once he starts going full time. ❤❤❤

I was a pre-k teacher. All of the things you’re feeling anxious about are completely valid. All the things Jenn was saying she didn’t get to show him, he will learn. Even if he doesn’t get it the first couple of weeks he will get it. From what I’ve seen he’s very smart, very respectful, and can verbalize what he needs. He will do just fine 😊

My youngest went into her first year of pre-k last August and just like my oldest I was ugly crying the entire way home! She had an absolute blast her first day and loves going to school! I think all the emotions of realizing your baby isn’t a baby anymore and watching them become more independent everyday then add trusting in another adult to take care of your baby is all a huge adjustment for everyone! You got this! 😊

Totally normal to feel anxiety when you drop off your first child to school. But it's really a blessing that he is excited about being there. There is nothing more heartbreaking about seeing your child cry when you drop them off. You know it's the best thing for thme, but it breaks your heart!! I love that you are feeling better, Jen. it is a struggle for sure, this time is really hard, but it's precious as well. Definitely treat yourself when you can, and everything should start feeling more normal. Oliver is so cute! Don't worry about the baby acne, totally normal. No one will judge!

Jenn, I just want to thank you for keeping things real and talking about the hard parts. It definitely helps people feel less alone, just as it makes you feel less alone when people comment that they’re going through the same thing. My baby is almost 2 now and we’re starting to talk about having a second. It’s helping me to see you navigate a toddler and a newborn so when it’s my turn I’ll hopefully remember how well you guys handle it!

Jaxson is adorable with Oliver you should set guidelines and rules for Jaxson like no yelling and rough housing around but letting Jaxson talk to him is great even letting him hold him as a baby on a chair or a sofa

I teach 3 yr olds and we stay busy. Not lots of sitting. Music, two different playgrounds, play time. Snack, circle time etc. he’s got it momma. I remember my first too!

As a daycare worker, you guys are doing great. It's a transitionary time for not just the child but for parents as well! He will miss you, but w always remind the kids "mom/dad/your grownup comes back" so reminding him you're always going to come back is good to do as well! Also telling him he needs to be quiet when his brother is sleeping is good as it also helps him with empathy for children during school (he doesn't have to sleep but he has friends who will and he needs to be quiet and let them sleep). Also don't worry, we make sure everyone knows where the bathrooms are!

I'm a teacher..on these days the children will get told where everything is and how everything works. He won't be sitting for hours it'll be very busy with lots of fun learning tasks. He will also have had a good chance to socialise with other children, lots of play. I bet he loved it! ❤

My oldest is 31 years old this year and I still remember her first day of kindergarten and she had gone to daycare. I’m a teacher, so school was a familiar place for her, but she still surprised me. After we found her desk, she looked up at me and told me I could go, she would be fine. I left and cried all the way to my school. I also cried most of the way home (6 hour drive) from dropping her off at college. You are doing great and no matter how old he gets, he will be your baby.

Love that you are getting through it with all the love and support of family and your you tube fam! You look great and are doing a wonderful job as a mom! As a former teacher of 4 and 5 year olds, they will be fine 😊 If they don't know how to do something or where somethings is, this is what we go through with them at the start of the day. Great that he went in happy. Even if he does cry somedays - once he gets into the classroom and starts to play he will be fine. I had a lot of children like this. Usually made worse when parents stick around. Better to leave straight away. If I had a child who was crying coming in, I would call the parents later on just to let them know that the child is okay ❤

I oversee early learning centers and after school programs, and I’ve been on the other end a million times. I’ll remember this the next time a parent has a hard time. Jackson's little giggles while he plays with Tim are SO sweet! Your boys melt my heart! Also, nowadays (myself included) so many mom's feel like they have to be wonder woman and we forget that it truly "takes a village". Also, don't feel bad for taking mental health time! We get it! I have anxiety too- my son is in elementary school and I literally had to be put on anti-anxiety meds because I would have a panic attack every day when his school would start that there was going to be a school shooting. Seriously- being a parent is hard work, mentally exhausting and totally overwhelming at times. Take time for yourself if you need it... and here's the REALLY hard part- DON'T feel bad about it, because everyone needs it sometimes.

As a preschool teacher you did everything right in getting him ready! The teachers will show him how to raise his hand and where everything is! He will do fantastic! I can already tell from past videos that he is right on track for school and possibly even ahead! Sounds like he is in a Montessori curriculum school which will suit him well!

You can gentle parent and teach him boundaries at the same time. He does need to learn that when the baby is sleeping that he needs to be considerate of that. He’ll learn things at school but it’ll also have to be reinforced at home.

I have been in education for 14 years and I am an elementary school asst principal. His adjustment to school will be fine. You guys are doing the right thing by talking him through what to expect. Generally students whose parents talk them through for our Kinder friends transition a lot smoother. So keep having those daily conversations of how to respond, how to ask questions and what to anticipate and he will do wonderful. You got this guys!!! Baby Oliver is so cute also!!

You should think about setting boundaries for Jackson, like when Oliver is in his swing he's not allowed to touch or talk to him. He's at the age where he will be learning rules at school & can get in trouble for breaking the rules. So establishing rules in the home now will make it easier for him to adjust to school.

Jackson going blank when you ask him initially how school was is very normal. Be prepared for more of that lol! It's simply because he's tired from his long day and just needs time to decompress a bit - just like us adults sometimes. You're his safe space, and he knows he can relax and doesn't have to "perform" for you in the same way as he might be expected to at school.

I feel this on a soul level... my boys are grown now and I'm in a different chapter of life at 49, but I remember that separation anxiety deep within a mama's and daddy's heart. You guys are amazing parents and Jackson and Oliver will grow up ALWAYS feeling loved. Love watching your cute little family! As a child care provider, “ I can see that your brother is sleeping right now, I can see that you would like to give him a hug. (Acknowledge his feelings) maybe you could make him a picture and when he wakes up, you can give him a hug.” Also when you pick him up ask, “what was you favorite thing you did at school today?” Also “who did you play with?” You are both amazing parents, and your children are so blessed to have you!

Aw how exciting Jackson is starting school! I'm a school social worker and used to be a preschool teacher it's so important for kids child development to be in and Tim/Jen your feelings are normal and valid. I've talked to a lot of parents who feel similarly to you. He's going to do so great and love it!

Absolutely nothing wrong with sending him to school but this makes me so glad I homeschool! I don’t think I could go through this at such a young age. We have so many social interactions as homeschoolers and co-ops. And different learning environments BUT it’s not the same as sending them to school. Haha. Edit to add for your parenting advice question: My biggest tip of a mom of 4, my youngest 2 are 24mo & 4mo. One thing we do is distraction or redirection. Also I would probably tell Jackson “let’s tell Oliver like a quote mouse how much you love him!” Then show him how to tip toe to him & whisper :) then repetition is key! Or maybe have him draw the baby a photo for how much he loves him instead :) My 2yr old loooves to hold my 4mo old. Sometimes baby gets slightly hurt but nothing major (like a bump or something) but it’s all part of the learning process for both kids. They learn by practice especially when it comes to the baby, encouraging him to be calm while letting him hold baby is important. Y’all are doing great!!❤

Not only did I feel like that when I sent my daughter to preschool the first day but I was also a preschool teacher and saw so many parents who felt the same way. As a previous preschool teacher I promise they will help him find his way and the bathroom. Lol

I've watched your videos for over a decade now and I can't even describe how happy it makes me to see you guys with your little family. I'm turning 31 this year and I've wanted to be a mom for as long as I can remember and this year I finally started to make the moves toward being a single mom by choice. I've nannied since I was 18 and I finally am in a place where I can start to figure out what single parenting will look like for me. Watching your videos makes me so incredibly excited for a little one and reminds me that I can only dream to be as badass of a mom that you are. I know how difficult watching a newborn and a toddler is (I nannied that combo during the pandemic) and man oh man you guys are doing the best job in the entire world. Can’t believe Jackson will be starting school….Time flies! He’ll love it! I remember worrying about my little guys when they started preschool, they did fine. I think Jackson going to school is going to be soooo good for him and both of you!!! Also Jenn if you learn to drive again you can have more independence as well and you will need that at some point to pick up and go where you want to go and do what you want to do as well!!! ❤🏫🚙

Wow Jackson's such a big boy now, they do grow so fast, my grandson is the same age as Jackson literally 2 months between them, he goes to nursery now and loves it, I'm sure Jackson will learn so much and have so much fun. Glad to hear oliver is doing so well too and he's still a gorgeous baby ❤❤

I love that Jackson missed you Jenn ❤️ and great approach in talking to him, Tim! 🙌🏻 I’m a children’s social worker and it’s very true that more specific questions are often easier for little ones to answer “(what games did you play?”) rather than general, open-ended questions (“how was school?”) My 8 year old still gives vague details about his school day but the way I word the questions help 😀

as someone who had meltdowns every day being dropped off for school at jackson’s age, i promise you he will be so okay. ❤ definitely harder for the parents lol! he’s a smart and lively kiddo, i’m sure he’ll have soo many pals at school. much love to y’all. also, the jackson cam is HILARIOUS. love it

Sometimes children just need to be told no. If what Jackson is doing is interfering with Oliver’s sleep he just needs to be told no, you can’t do that now.

I'm going through the exact same thing. My little girl turned 3 (march 6th) and will be starting half days at school next week. We visited the school last month and she knows a few others from baby music classes which is lovely, so I'm excited and nervous too. They have to wear a school uniform over here in the UK which is soooo cute. Don't forget to take a picture on his first actual day of school so you can compare it to when he finishes the year ❤️

Your parental feeling are so ok! I taught kindergarten for 35 years… teachers will help them through anything they need! You will leave your baby and find such a different child after a few months of school … I can tell he’s so ready! It will be fine - you are great parents!

I'm a retired educator who ran a day care learning center. I encouraged/redirected new parents just like the teacher did at Jackson's school. However, I had a second child 20 years after my first child (surprise) and even though I knew all the info and first day observations/experiences, I have to admit to you that I snuck into the classroom opposite where my son was and looked through the key hole to see how he was doing! No joke! He was FINE. It was me (just like you Jen). I so get what you were feeling. It is so natural. I remember that my hubby cried when he put our son on the bus for kindergarten. Really! You both are great parents. It is all normal for 2 loving and giving parents to experience the separation anxiety you did.! Enjoy the journey.

Jenn when you said "Are you sure" I actually laughed out loud😂. I can completely relate to that feeling. When my son started school, I thought I'd be able to stay and observe a while as well but they told me that I could go and my son reinforced that by saying OK Mom. See you later. 🥲🤷🏾‍♀️.

Cried when all four of mine started preschool. It does get easier until they get old enough to leave school, now I cry as each one leaves 😂 My youngest son also had baby acne and I was so paranoid that people would think I wasn’t taking care of him properly. Totally empathise with you guys. You’re both doing an amazing job ❤

All the feels with anxiety is what most of us parents have been through. My first born didn’t even look back she was so excited to start school. My second child was different, she was clingy and mostly the teacher or assistant had to take her so I could leave but it did get better. This will get easier and you guys did a great job with Jackson. You both are great parents. 🥰

Great to see Jackson going to school. I think Early Childhood Education is so beneficial not just for academic growth but especially social-emotional growth. Also, kids - and even adults, lol - test boundaries just to understand how to relate to their world. Redirect Jackson when he tries to wake Oliver and he'll get the picture. Plus, Oliver will get bigger each month and eventually will be rocking, turning himself over, crawling, standing. Jackson will love the next stages since more and more play will be involved!

My daughter is the same age as Jackson . When she started preschool this year (just 2 days a week/ 2hrs) I sat in the parking lot the whole first month in case she needed me 😂.

Starting school is such a milestone for parents as well as the child! Sounds like it all went well. Learning new routines and boundaries is essential for developing independence. Plus it’s part of their life without you! All so exciting. 😊
