Younger people won't know what an Earl Scheib paint job is (I'll paint any car for $99.95) but this thing is old enough to have that. I had one once, it wasn't that bad if you wet sanded it yourself beforehand en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Scheib
He's a danger to himself and other people quite often, someone yells at you to kill an engine you kill it, wizard could have had his beard caught in it!
1 dead cylinder and 1 half dead (60 psi) on an engine with 180,000 mi. Sell it & let the wizard do his magic on an electric power plant. That was Hoovies original plan A and a few minutes of smoke is no reason to change course now.
@@jellybean1976928 Yeah honnestly the thing about EV conversions is after it's been done a few times, it's the same thing... like engines have different sounds, different cylinders, different size etc but EV is just, EV conversion that's it.
@@keithprinn720 Won't be 20k if he sends it off to someone like Mustie1 with his gigantic parts stash. He's one of those guys where if he posts a "will it run" video you already know the answer is a yes, and if it doesn't he'll make it, even if it's bringing engines back to life that spent 20-30 years in the woods and have barely any car around them left. Not to mention the time he spends on restoring his babies. He definitely knows what he's doing when it comes to aircooled stuff
Wizard in panic: "turn it off , turn it off , turn it off , turn it off..." Hoovie while not turning it off with big smile on his face : "but its running". :D :D :D
@@Zirion123 or a hole in a piston....or blown out head gasket....or cracked intake manifold.....or cracked cylinder wall.....or a warped head due to overheating......go back to mechanic's school......
This beautiful Porsche has already been "mickey moused" enough with the roof. This car deserves to have it's engine repaired and be brought back to life!
the reality is, any parts that would've gotten damaged by trying to start it are up for replacement anyway. It's worth it to just crank it over and see if it fires to determine whether or not it's even worth going further, rather than half ass restoring it just to see if it runs.
How to identify an idiot? Mechanic screams: turn it off turn it off. Answer: but it's running. Gotta love hovie, no rational man could make this entertaining content LOL
I like how The Wizard didn't scream , "Turn it off man, are ye deaf?!!!!". I wished my dad was more Wizard and less "Drill Sergeant" when we worked on cars in my youth.
@@cooperjackson614 well the Wizard can just bill Hoovie some more if he fucks up, plus it's Hoovie's car. maybe your dad was just worried things would go wrong. I don't know of course, but it's certainly not an identical situation
lol good point! When he flat out yelled the second time I was like "Um....he's not gonna turn it off" - half expecting him to try and gun it - BUT knowing full well he wouldn't do that but...ya never know lol
I was hoping Wizard was gonna deck him one when that dumbass replied: “but you’re insured!” Deplorable! Did they run out of Adderall at his local pharmacy?
""But it's running" *pumps gas agggressively* Truly on brand, and it's impossible to tell anymore if its real because the weeeeeeeeeezard is as good on camera as Hoovie is
Seriously?! Wizard has gotten sooo much better, but he's still ridiculously awkward on camera. (Watch literally any video on Wizard's channel for extreme examples, lol.)
Here's an idea. Rebuild the engine. Then find a '71-'72-'73 Ford Pinto and electrify THAT. I had more than a few back in the day. Nice handling lil cars!! They got a bad rap over exploding gas tanks when rear-ended. Happened to me 3 times, I'm still breathing!!! Gas tank gone, no fire hazard. That will be IF you can find one, they rusted pretty fast. My favorite was a '71 coupe with a 2-liter and an automatic. After I adjusted the valves and cleaned the carb, I put premium fuel in and she'd squeek the tires on the 1-2 shift!! It came with a new set of Michellin tires on and the handling was really good! Brakes, not so much. DO IT.
Was about to post something like this. Considering his ginormous stash of parts, it wouldn't surprise me if it really was a one-weekend job at most. Or maybe he finds something simple being wrong like he has done multiple times in the past
Well said!!! If it wasn't for a RU-vid subsidy it would have no value. A true money pit. These videos have taught me a valuable lesson................................
Only a complete philistine would EV swap a car like that. If you must ruin a classic Porsche, do it to one that you've already spoilt with the LS motor.
Please rebuild the original engine, redo the electrical harness, and restore the Targa Top! I know you could do the EV swop, but if you restore it to as built, it will pay for itself.
Reversible EV swap would be interesting. I think I've seen bolt in kits that uses existing mount poins for everything, and that way it could be easily converted back later. Might want to just keep the engine (as is) though.
I would love to see them do a cost analysis between returning to targa configuration vs fixing convertible. And which configuration has higher market value. 👍🚙
A Targa that had the Targa bit cut off and a folding roof that looks like I made it installed. It's a bag of bits anyway, non-original bits at that, you might as well put a different motor in.
Wizard, an experienced and skilled mechanic: "TURN IT OFF!! TURN IT OFF!!" Hoovie, with the mechanical aptitude of a pencil: Y tho? Just giving you a hard time Tyler. It's a little alarming that you wouldn't turn off the car and ask questions later.
Why would some people cut of literally parts of the structure to make it a convertible 😧🙈 I much more prefer the Targa actually nevertheless I like it 😊 btw it’s pronounced fux (Fuchs) 👍🏻🙂
Its garbage. New engine, paintwork, electrics, fuel system, hood, interior - and that is on a car that has been butchered. Brakes, transmission, seals.....
A really radical idea if you EV the new Porsche, is to rebuild that engine and put it in your replica. Superior transaxle too, as sure you said the replica uses a VW Beetle box. The Beetle transaxle can be used with the EV conversion, where a wide choice of gears isn't required.
There used to be a show called “Rescue 911” when I was a kid. It came on before Unsolved Mysteries, then I’d usually stay up late to watch Cops and America’s Most Wanted after
I am waiting for hoovie to grow a pair and start working on his own cars :) Tavarish is really the hero of all the friends, because he will throw caution to wind, and just owns Factory Owners Manuals like it is his calling in life :)
I always change the oil, clean out the gas tank, fuel line and fuel filter. Disconnect the fuel line and run the pump to remove any fuel line junk. Squirt some oil into the cylinders and flush the radiator. Change the thermostat. Install a new battery and start cranking.
We had the same issue now on a 2.7 Sebring 2002, removing the spark plug and connect with the heads covers? + delete lifters, so valve stay close. Just wondering.
I'd love to see you learn about the internals of a combustion engine Hoovie, get hands on and rebuild it yourself.... under the wizards supervision of course. May also help you on future car trek productions
“You’ll have to rebuild the whole motor that’s 10 grand and more that doesn’t even include pulling the motor”. These rear air-cooled motors must be easy to remove?
I wonder what the car is like to drive at high speeds. In 1983 porsche reinforced the chassis when they produced the first cabriolet SC due to the car needing more rigidity. They were trying to make a convertible for years previously but couldn’t do so because of that issue.
my brother passed in 2002. I have his 1980 targa 911 sc. hasnt been started since early 2002. garage kept for a large portion of last 20 years. I would love some advice on what to do before i start it
Strip it down for lightweight, sell each part individually and make it a racing spec evo with resto mods on select suspension parts. Sell everything that doesn't need to be in the car. I'd LOVE to see that. I bet you could have fun seeing how much you can get for it part by part.
