How exciting! And it's wise of you to wait till it's the right time for you to pursue university. So many of us jump into it before we're ready just because we're made to feel like we are meant to do it at a certain age/point in our education. Best of luck to you! 📚

Very good point ,getting work experience is important ,not jumping at the first opportunity is a very good strategy, and thinking of the best degree to take

I’m so proud of you for making the choice of pursuing an online degree! I know that an online degree is not quite conventional and people may judge you, but at the end of the day you made your own choice focusing on your own needs and I applaud you for doing that!

I can understand you very well. School was a nightmare for me, because I was bullied so much. I would have loved to study history, or rather prehistory, which interests me most, but was talked out of it. Wishing you all the best for your studies!

I did my English literature degree with the open university over 10 yrs ( I had babies in the middle). I managed it with a full time job, then with small children. It is a great way to study and slightly cheaper.

I think you'd be surprised how many students nowadays actually don't drink and there's lots to do at university that doesn't involve partying. But your other reasons like not wanting to leave home make a lot of sense. Ultimately you know what's best for you and it shows a lot of maturity that you are doing that. Also, so many universities are teaching at least partially online now that it makes sense to go with the university that knows what it's doing in that regard. I completely understand about your trepidation of doing a literature degree. That was my degree and whilst I loved it in a lot of ways and don't regret doing it, it has really affected my reading. I like watching Booktube as it's great to see people like yourself to help reignite my passion.

Oh Lucy! I'm so SO happy for you. I'm from a country where taking gap years is extremely tabood so most people (me included) go directly from school to university. When you said in an earlier video that you had decided to not go to university yet and take as much time as needed to be ready, I felt so happy for you. Then when you said you had decided to go to university, my heart sunk a little because I thought you'd go to a traditional university which can be very claustrophobic (I love how you have spent the last two years and how independent and free-spirited you are). However, today on seeing your decision to go to the Open University I again feel so happy because I'm exactly like you. I'm a tremendous homebody and have no desire to party or socialize. I'm so glad that you won't have to go through those anxieties and your university experience will be a peaceful one. All the very best!

Open University seems a good choice if you are a disciplined and self motivated person (as I suspect you are). Many traditional universities are being forced into online learning at short notice, but the Open U have been "at it" for decades (i.e. the experts). Also if you ever do look for work in the curator/library/museum/heritage world, having a recent online degree and being a YT native will look impressive! These are sectors that are increasing having to integrate online stuff into all they do. Good luck! :-)

One note: It doesn't' matter what University or college you go to, what matters is what YOU the student put into it and that at the end of the day is all that matters! Take that from a teacher here who inspires my students to love learning and keep going. So, don't worry about what others think of the university you are attending, all that matters is you the student and what YOU put into it! I am wishing you all the best luck if you ever have any questions, PM me anytime as I've been down the road of online learning, it is fun but yes at times it can be challenging to juggle everything in but I have high hopes you will be a great success! Can you do a stationary haul, ahhh I so love everything about studying. LOL, my dad used to tell me that I'd be a professional student and ya know I think he's right, as I still study after all these years. I'm studying writing craft independently now through free college classes and hoping to get another degree in either English or Literature. I think learning is a life-long process and some of us are autodidacts and learn for life!

Wow, those modules sound awesome! I'm getting a degree through distance education, too. Like you, I love to learn but can't deal with the school atmosphere, so I LOVE studying at home. Don't let anyone tell you a distance degree isn't worth as much as a brick-and-mortar university degree, because distance education has major challenges of its own, and the knowledge you gain is the same. But it's so much fun! I'm so excited for you! You'll do great!

So interesting, thanks for sharing! We have also such a system in Germany, and especially if you want to study something that is not available nearby, and you don't have the money etc. to move (or maybe want to stay where you are because of family, friends, ...) some people tend to chose this kind of university. It's interesting that the degree you get is equal to the 'normal' one, I don't want to sound rude, it's just that in Germany it's definitely not seen as equal, although I think it should be. Some years ago those kind of degrees were mostly for people who wanted to gain some extra knowledge and additional qualification for their jobs. You had to pay a lot, sometimes 4 000€ a year for something that was not approved everywhere, which seems frustrating and irritating. And you couldn't study everything. Nowadays I think it changed a lot and people got more aware that it is also work to study from home and not just something you get when you pay enough. I hope you have fun (yes, that's important!!) and please - enjoy it. You can be proud of yourself!

For philosophy you can read The Enchiridion by Epictetus. Use the A.A. Long translation. SBRE Brown does a series on stoicism on his youtube channel. For the Reformation there is a lot on print censorship. The Star Chamber, the High Commision and the Stationer's Company were responsible for publishing and censorship. I was going to do a 5000 word essay on it using primary sources from 1558 to 1640 until the plague hit us. I hope to do my dissertation on a related topic in my final year. You will love history. Enjoy it, immerse yourself in it and you will never look back. It is the best thing I have ever done and I am in my 50s although I am at a physical university. The sheer volume of texts available will delight you. All the best for October.

I would just like to add (at the wise old age of 32 -lol, jk) that whilst you’re decision to study OU makes really good sense especially given the CV19 pandemic, that you can have fun at uni if you’re not into drinking culture. I feel that side is really hyped up. Of course it’s there if you want to partake, but I went through 2 of my 3 years at Uni tee-total for medical reasons. I’d only “go out” (to a rock music place not clubbing) very occasionally. I had a nice group of friends and we’d go to the library, for coffee, or a chill pub to hang out. I loved library time with a couple of close course mates discussing literature and theory and the papers we worked on. So if OU offers you social events take them :) they can be remarkably academically stimulating!

Ah nice!! I completed my open university degree in 2018 and it was very rewarding (I took the 6 years)! I studied for an Open Degree, but followed a Physics pathway and was able to do a masters last year (at a 'brick' university), so despite what some people say I have personally found that an OU degree is well respected out there. People know what kind of commitment it takes to self study - so that is a major plus!! Good luck with it - enjoy getting all the resources and books in Sept! (That is one of the best bits :D). PS This has totally made me want to sign up for a module - I do miss it :)

The most helpful tip is to think about not what you want to study but what you want to do after uni. Even if you have multiple ideas usually one or two majors can help you work towards those future ambitions. And you can always specialize later on in life with grad school. Most universities also require you to take “core classes” so a little bit of everything outside of your degree to have a well-rounded education. Good luck!

Lucy, I am so proud of you. You will start your degree in History very soon. I live in America where A-Levels are not offered. I know you studied English Literature, Creative Writing, and Sociology. I have graduated middle school and I will now start high school. I have so many insatiable desires lurking beneath me. It is excellent that you have taken two years away from education to focus on writing your first few books and plan your future. English and History are my favorite subjects in school and I believe that literature and history connect in so many ways. I think Open University is a great way to pursue a degree. I love reading and writing with such ardor. You are a kindred spirit of mine. I love you

You can start university at any time! Plus you are still young! I had much older students in some of my classes throughout both university and graduate school. I am in the states so it may be more age diverse here, but I doubt it since we seem to follow that ‘majority goes to college right away’ path. I say don’t let the age difference bog you down- you can use it to your advantage!

When I studied my first degree I had a few muture students on my course. I went at 18 and most of the friends I made at university were in their late 20s. One guy was in his 40s. You'll be fine. :)

I did my first degree from 17-21. One of my classmates started at 80 and finished at 84. It doesn't matter at all.....

'60s eh. Lotsa older Baby Boomers are a first-hand resource. Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, hippies, counterculture, protests, free love, drug-use, music festivals, the extremists of the Romantic Rebellion of Goethe et al. Imagine 18 year old you at Woodstock.
