There is a fanfic on Spacebattles called the Klingon War. A AU where instead of negotiating after the destruction of Praxis, the Chancellor of the Empire is killed in a Coup for wanting to talk. Instead the Empire goes to war, the Federation beats them, and becomes more Pragmatic realising that it’s surrounded by neighbours who would like to destroy them. It’s actually pretty good...
@tarvoc746
@tarvoc746 6 лет назад
+King Peppy "Between those two polar extremes, the only other resolution to beating the Cardassians would involve what?" - Keeping Cardassia as an independent state with limited power and territory that could handle its internal affairs on its own while the Federation would maintain a say in all its foreign affairs. This isn't the first time in history something like that has happened, particularly in cases where the power that lost the war was also the aggressor. Occupied worlds like Bajor would likewise be restored to independence and also given the opportunity to join the Federation if they wanted to, and Cardassian colonies in now-Federation territory would be given a choice: Return their citizens to Cardassian space; become independent worlds (once again being allowed to handle their internal affairs on their own while being represented and protected by the Federation in foreign affairs); or straight-up join the Federation. So no - Stalemate, Empire, and Genocide are fortunately not the only three possible outcomes of war. Incidentally, this solution would be so different from anything the Cardassians themselves did to defeated enemies that it might even end up causing a cultural paradigm shift within Cardassian society in the long run.

You're seriously underselling the Nebula class starship. During TNG era, it was easily the 2nd most powerful class vessel in Starfleet, behind the Galaxy class. Especially when equipped with the torpedo module instead of the sensor module like the USS Phoenix. Other than that, I love your videos, keep up the good work!

While I respect TrekYards, watch their stuff, and consider them to be a far better show then what I have.. I would respectfully disagree with their analysis here. The ship they show is not the Phoenix Class. We have atleast 4-5 classes.. The Phoenix, Sutherland, farragut, bonchune, and Dominion war variants. The phoenix, which was the standard TNG variant - was not meant for combat.. There's no resources to show the Phoenix was anywhere near as powerful, additionally - Gene was still a live and an influence and I believe he had a role in how .. tamed.. the phoenix was.
@Zero8880
@Zero8880 7 лет назад
The Phoenix, Sutherland, Farragut etc are all part of the "Nebula Class" of starships. A key component of the Nebula is that they can swap the upper pod section for different missions. For example, the USS Phoenix can be retrofitted with a torpedo pod instead of the sensor pod. That's probably why we didn't see any Nebula Class ships with the round sensor pod during the Dominion War, bc they all got refitted with the Torpedo pods due to the need for more firepower. That's what makes the Nebula Class so useful. It's the swiss army knife of starships.
@jeanleon1637

If you equipped it for combat duties exclusively, the Nebula would be superior in a combat role than the Galaxy.

@@LoreReloaded This is one of those places where I think, though sometimes you have good and different big-picture insight, sometimes your style seems to be to assume maximum stupidity on anyone's part unless specifically always shown otherwise. Starfleet is idealistic, maybe sometimes hobbled by policy, but not stupid. If that class of ship survived the war and basically won, yeah, it was tough when so-outfitted. (I'm also not so sure 'number of phaser banks' is such a good gauge when there are like 270 degree tracking collimator arcs dorsal and ventral and the rest of the phaser strips are just filling in coverage gaps. However they work, you never seem to see them all lighting up at the same time, anyway. Which is very much what I'd be interested in doing if there was an actual firepower advantage that way. Presumably there just isn't.))

The Problem with the Federation is that they were surrounded by enemies. They simply had too much space to protect and not enough ships to properly protect it. It was part why the Romulans joining the war help the UFP tremendously for they could transfer ships from the Beta Quadrant to the Alpha without worrying losing territory. Also, the Galaxy Class are complex machines that took far longer to build then other classes, and a Tactical Nebula Class can be pretty powerful as it was design by conflict. Even then, for the first four years they built 15, and continued production until an unconfirmed 30-60 were built by the Dominion War. You are also not taking into account progression in Technology, and how the Federation was making large strides by the end, so there were points Cardassian technology were comparable, if not superior then Federation technology. Just look at TNG where by in seven years the Galaxy class double in strength in power. But the bottom line it was simply they could not transfer enough ships to crush the Cardassians without fear of the Romulans, the Tholians, and so many other minor powers taking advantage. Not to mention the Border Wars were not just war with the Cardassians, but several different conflicts with species across their space, one of which were powerful enough to outclass the Cardassians and the Federation had a brutal, though short war with.
@preshlock
@preshlock 7 лет назад
that was a basic problem with the Federation constantly expanding {by admitting new worlds} eventually they were going to encounter hostile species.
@raw6668
@raw6668 7 лет назад
Yep, and probably why the Federation recover so quickly after the Dominion War. As production was still the same but there was no one was left to fight after it was all said and done, or UFP previous efforts ensure peace for the first time since the beginning of the 24th century.
@JeanLucCaptain

Basically what I said in a previous video. And despite this they refused to properly militerise and instead act like the UN, toothless.
@raw6668
@raw6668 7 лет назад
No as I can make the argument they were militarized just not to the levels they should have been. No it was more like they just didn't have time to properly militarized their fleets beyond what they had. As they were too busy just keeping ahead and handling all their enemies that they could not focus properly, until the Brog invasion. Then they had no choice but to divert everything into the military, and hope the Romulans and others did not take advantage, and the Dominion and Cardassians before them did. It was much like the US faced before WWII, and if wasn't a blunder on Japan's part, the war could have been ten times longer and worst.

no their issue was that their member states still had their own ships, and THEN their was the federation ships. wich diluted manpower and military force.
@ringleader61
@ringleader61 7 лет назад
the Federation's biggest issue is it's own ego. They feel that fighting a war to win makes them look like conquers. This is because of the "dove" faction the grew during the years of peace they had between 2330 and 2360. And since most of their opponents were less advanced or much smaller, they could simply contain them in their own space using their fleet or politics to do the job. When they finally ran into a enemy they couldn't beat, they got annihilated. I.E. the borg and the dominion.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
I concur.. It was a very 'limited engagement' idea.. not unlike what we see in the real world.
@ringleader61
@ringleader61 7 лет назад
barely. the cost with the borg in just the ep. best of both worlds was over 25,000 people. and that was in just under a week. the dominion cost the federation billions of lives in just under 2 years.
@ringleader61
@ringleader61 7 лет назад
ok, you have totally miss the point.
@ringleader61

the bottom line is, starfleet dragged it's feet in the 2 1/2 years it had before the war started and they were still building explorers, science vessels and survey ships and older ship designs with very large crews instead of more modern and combat oriented ships. this mind set cost them 100k's of starfleet personal and thousands of ships. had SF built more Nova, Intrepid, Nebula, Venture, Sovereign, and Akira class ships, they could have fared much better with fewer losses.

They were going for a diplomatic and science victory. And their military held up anyway so they won. Sour grapes...

But Nebula can carry a variety of pods on the top, one of the options is a weapons pod with even more torpedo launchers. Considering similar design, the power output of Nebula and Galaxy should be similar. So the phasers are actually quite adequate. In Star Trek, the number of phasers rarely matters unless shooting at a lot of small targets.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
Later Variants make the nebula class a power house. However, there's no indication it was this way during the Era of TNG. Some others have brought up that it might have more then just one phaser array and while no written resources show this, the actual model makes it look like it does.. so I'm willing to concede it had up to three arrays.. I still find it..under whelming.. But the ship can be made to be a beast apparently.

@jonathansullivan6706
@jonathansullivan6706 7 лет назад
Ok...a few things. First, the nebula class is armed with more than two phasers. There are two more strips along the aft saucer, with another along th ventral engineering hull and one on the dorsal surface of each nacelle pilon. Furthermore, their shield grid is identical to that of the galaxy class but is more efficient due to the smaller size of the shield bubble. Additionally, most Nebula class cruisers were outfitted with a tactical pod along the dorsal superstructure. This afforded them several rapid fire torpedo launchers in both fore and aft firing arcs, and also provided the ship with an advanced sensor grid and electronic warfare package. Honestly, the nebula class starships were actually quite formidable, and were basically the better version of the galaxy class while being less expensive and far more reliable
@HeadlessChickenTO
@HeadlessChickenTO 7 лет назад
IIRC, Nebulas were build with a exchangeable modular mission specific pod section as part of it's initial design (TNG era). A combat mission pod exponentially increased the Nebula's offensive and defensive abilities with the addition of (based on what I remember reading years ago) 2 torpedo launchers plus higher capacity and 5 phaser banks. It was done so like this because of cost effectiveness, a Galaxy took almost 3x as much raw material and years to build. Much like Mirandas were cheap fillins for Constitutions.
@jeanleon1637

And like the Miranda, the Nebula, if fitted correctly, could be much more useful than its brother in a combat situation.

@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
I don't disagree that the sutherland is an updated variant of the Nebula class. This ofcourse happened after the battle of wolf 359 when they would begin upgrading their ships. When data took control of the Sutherland it was stardate (45020.5 - (Season 5, episode 1) - The battle of Wolf 359 occurred on 44002.3 (Season 4, Episode 1) . Though it is worth of noting that while most official resources state that the Phoenix class was the original nebula variant (Which was very, very lax on phasers) - 'The Wounded' occurs at Season 4, Episode 12.. In theory the Phoenix might have been upgraded since then (I mean the southerland was and that's not to far off).. But still, the original nebula variant was lacking to the extreme.

@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
Sorry, for some reason RU-vid thought you were trying to share something untoward.. Your #1 on the forward launcher and #2 show Nebula Variants that happened during the Dominion War and Battle of Sector 001.. My reference was to the original Phoenix Variant. The one we see in TNG 'The Wounded'. There's no resources that I've found that show that it had more than the phaser banks that are quoted. And every scene in TNG with battle only shows it using it's main phaser banks. That said, The original Phoenix Model (the one you sh owed in the first, which is pretty cool) - does quite clearly show phaser arrays. We never see them used, nor are they mentioned in other canon resources..but I'm more than happy to concede it had 3 phaser banks at that point.

the Phoenix ,with no shields, took a direct hit and then destroyed the Cardassian war ship attacking it. It has plenty if firepower. Official sources rate the Vor'cha class s equal to the Nebula! it's not the ship's, it's Starfleet pacifism that hamstrings them
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
We have no real reason to believe that the Phoenix did not have its shields up. It's in enemy territory, tracking a cargo ship it intends to destroy.. So having shields up would seem to make sense. Why it didn't have its weapons running hot is beyond me. The Nebula Class ship was designed so that different packages could be inserted upon it. Later Iterations - specifically those designed after Wolf 359 and during the dominion war - make it into a beast. There's no official resource that i've found to make me believe it had these before those incidents. Also, this would make sense out of the fiction as well given that Gene Roddenberry still had his hands in the TNG pie. All that to say, I agree that it was ultimately Starfleet's Pacifism that hamstrung them in the conflict.

@batmanlaughed800
@batmanlaughed800 7 лет назад
Agreed, that was one of the things I loved about DS9 over most other Trek series, they weren't afraid to say that Starfleet wasn't some perfect utopia that must never be questioned in it's awesomeness. From Kyra's distrust of Starfleet coming in directly after the cardasian occupation ended, to Ben Sisko's dad telling off the Starfleet officers who came to collect his blood, and pointing out that freedom shouldn't come at the cost of satisfying the paranoia of "the government," (him calling them vampires was a nice touch.) The show talked about the way others who aren't Starfleet officers see the federation. Heck even having Jake tell Sisko he had no interest in joining Starfleet was a step in the right direction. To often Starfleet is depicted as the 23rd/24th century equivalent of Harvard or Oxford Universities. Anyone who is anyone in that time line was always a federation officer. As though there was nothing but Starfleet in that time frame. Sure Picards buddy had his underwater projects, and Kirk's brother was some kind of scientist if I remember correctly. But they were always somehow connected to Starfleet. It was nice to see Jake want to be something as normal as a writer, or Sisko's dad loving that he owned an actual restaurant. In my not so humble opinion that's something they need more of in trek, some bottle episodes where they go back to earth and take leave and show how the other half live. Hell, I'll take a trip to an Terran, Vulcan, or Andorian colony if they want to stay all sci fic-ish. But I want to hear what the civvies have to say about the battle of Wolf 359. Or the annexing of Beta-Zed. That would make for some interesting sci fic in my opinion. I think that a lot of sci fic writers forget that there are other sciences than psychology, astronomy, or physics that can be explored in sci fic settings, namely sociology, anthropology, etc. This is why we have classics like Metropolis. In fact this has just inspired me to take up a friend on their challenge to read “Sociology Through Science Fiction” by John W Milstead. Just suggestion, you might want to check it out, could be an interesting topic for a future video for your channel.

You made some good points in this video on Starfleet's incompetence/reluctance in maximizing their military potential, however they are not the first one to blame. Federation, due to its political ideology and structure, has to provide very high living and developing opportunitis for all its citizens(think about Sisko's father who runs his own restaurant in a society without money), and avoid wars at all costs. Starfleet has its hands tied even if the higher ups wanna to militarized, just recall the time in Dominion War that it takes a mutiny to declear curfew,. On the other hand, another way there is to look into Federation's incapability to defend its interest is that it was incompetent against each and every Borg invasion, while the powers less advanced in Delta quardant(say Devore) can hold their ground neighboring Borg territory for hundreds of years. PS: A Nebula class, in its default configuration, has at least 80% phaser firepower that of a Galaxy class, and it can be expanded by mounting a weapon module.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
I would be curious to get your opinion on my video that theorizes what would have happened if the Federation was assimilated. I don't disagree that those in 'paradise' were keeping the military from being what it could. I think that Sisko said it quite well that they didn't understand what it was like to be out on the edge of space.. 'in the frontier'. I also am not blaming the Federation - I'm just pointing out what their actions created. As for the Nebula, I simply don't find any real source that supports that. The Phoenix class (Which is the original first one) appears to be very, very limited in its abilities. Though with the module - becomes a pretty big power house. You can see the Sutherland class ship - not 9 months later. HOWEVER, all that to say this.. I'm going to be doing a video at the end of the series that will go through every 'inaccuracy', 'controversy', and 'topic' - that each of my videos discussed and go over more indepth. You can rest assured.. The Nebula Class's abilities will be in that video ;)

The Nebula class is a powerful starship, the clip you should with the USS Phoenix proves that. The number of phaser arrays / photon torpedo as an indicator of power of a ship is inaccurate. I would argue it more depends on how much power each phaser blast can deliver. A starship will have a finite amount of power available in the instant of firing, this power can either be concentrated through one phaser array that can be delivered at a single point (like when the Enterprise-D blasted a whole through the Borg Cube) or it can be channeled to different arrays allowing multiple targets to be engaged simultaneously. Therefore more arrays only means more targets can be engaged simultaneously! I also disagree with your assessment of the Cardassian 'border wars', my impression of these conflicts were they large scale skirmishes. It started with the Cardassians initially raiding far flung and poorly defended federation colonies. I imagine the Federation effort was exclusively defensive but they gradually gained the upperhand as they deployed more and more starships to the Cardassian front. I think the 'Wars' ended when the Cardassians were pushed back to their space and they realised they had no prospect of gaining any territory by military means. This peace also suited the federation as (a). continuing meant escalating the war and the unappetizing prospect of deploying ground troops to invade and occupy Cardassian planets, (b). this happens around 2366, so starfleet wants to pull it's ships back to face the borg threat (In reality this action isn't completed before the borg invasion of 2367 and that is why only 40 ships are available at Wolf 359).

Throughout the entire video you missed the purpose of the Federation; to provide a paradise for its citizens. Going around picking fights with neighbouring belligerent powers has the precise opposite effect. The Federation isn't a 24th century US or Russia or ISIS etc. By all means be strong, but don't stick your nose into other peoples wars, at least not overtly, and DEFINITELY don't go starting them. As Roosevelt said; "Speak softly, and carry a big stick".

The Nebula class is to the Galaxy, what the Miranda was to the Constitution. A lighter-weight, more compact mass produced ship, that could be retrofitted with different modules depending on the situation that it found itself in, often times meaning it could be better than its bigger brother at any specific task, think of it along the ideas of specialization versus a jack of all trades. A combat fitted miranda/nebula would be equal/possibly superior in a combat situation than a Constitution or Galaxy, but would be worse at the other things those two ships could do, such as science/cargo transport. It was exactly that heavily modular design and mass produced nature that probably allowed the Miranda class to survive for as long as it did while the Constitution got phased out. It was cheaper, could be made tougher and stronger, was smaller and more maneuverable, and had less structural weaknesses, and could be fitted with what the mission at hand needed. This is exactly like the Nebula, which follows the same design philosophy. I assume the only reason we saw more Mirandas than Nebulas, was due to the Pacifistic nature of Starfleet, and the Miranda being good enough for the threats at the time.

Well done and driving home how the Federation's ideals translate poorly in dealing with even its more aggressive allies, let alone its enemies. I never understood why Starfleet bothered allowing Federation colonies to exist within the DMZ. They could have easily have beamed them all off the planets and forcibly relocate on planets not near Cardassia. I am totally on Sisko's side. I have a theory that the reason why Starfleet never punished Sisko for using a biomutagenic weapon on the Maquis was because they hoped it would make them start abandoning those colonies for safer ones.
@LoreReloaded

It's my understanding that an arbitrary line was drawn and what used to be a federation planet..stopped being that. The people were told to leave..and didn't. And yea with the mutagenic weapon, there is no way he should have still been a captain after that.. but the federation got lucky he was..

I guess so. I figure Sisko wasn't punished either because Starfleet secretly approved of his actions or because the Prophets "protected" him from repercussions. Remember, when Sisko was an ensign, he was tasked with escorting an annoying dignitary that he actually punched but wasn't punished either (seriously, in the real world this would earn him a court martial and jail time). Maybe the Prophets were protecting him...

There's no resource that shows the Phoenix Variant (The original) being any better than I say. I think I could be talked into it having three phaser arrays - as the model clearly shows that - but any nebula class shown to me with a 'tactical package' is not the phoenix variant and the clips are shown from the dominion wars and on (which would have been the advanced ship). All that to say this, at the end of the series.. I'll be doing a 'What I got wrong' video..and will definitively be having the Nebula class as a discussion piece ;)

Fair enough- I read somewhere that cardi tech was approx 50 years behind the federation. Just making the point that the ship was no oberth or miranda class, it was a modern vessel of medium size. As such they would definitely consider it a threat.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
Of that I would agree.. Definitively better than oberth and probably Miranda as well (specifically combat wise).. Ironically.. I have seen an argument and am coming around to nebula being the Miranda class of the tng., Miranda was a work horse and great ship in the day.. So is nebula.. Both..to my understanding..were meant to be the cheaper version of the flag ships..

I have a question. Might the captain of the U.S.S. Pheonix have gotten his nebula class ship upgraded (perhaps by means the he kept Starfleet in the dark about)? Him and his crew were out to wage a one ship preemptive war against the Cardasians after all. And if he did, wouldn't that completely change the perspective of how powerful Cardasian ships were during that time.
@Asachana
@Asachana 5 лет назад
Your analysis is very good - especially that was the plan of the session anyway. The Cardassians were like the Germans in the 20th century - okay mix of empire and Nazi. The Klingons Play the russians like in TOS, the Romulans are a mix of Italians/French. The Federationis the British or the Americans. The Cardassians became powerful in the Dominon like Germans in the Nazi-rule just to end to be face by the united force.

From the TNG technical manual the top phaser on the Galaxy is actually 200 emitter segments linked together. I always consided that the equivalent of 200 TOS ball emitters . If the size of the saucer and this phaser on the nebula is the same as the galaxy then the main phaser of the two ships are the same strength. And if you add in the top weapons mount on the nebula that would make the nebula class a superior combatant then the Galaxy class. Which makes sense with the Galaxy being the long-range Explorer with families schools and indoor playgrounds versus the nebula which was supposedly built in larger numbers and would have been the general workhorse ship of the fleet.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 5 лет назад
I love the tech manuals but they arent considered canon
@jasonsniderman7803
@jasonsniderman7803 5 лет назад
TRUE but it makes sense that the longer the array the more powerful it is. Then you can compare the dorsal sauser and the side pylon. Voyager actually helps demonstrate this idea better than the tech manual. 200 is too many emitters. If u look at the saucer phaser strips on Voyager you can see hash marks that divide it in 6 parts. So the array combines 6 ball or double ball emitters into a mega beam. It helps compare the relative strength of the ships. If Voy and Gal or both type 10 the Galaxy sauser array would be 4-5 times as powerful

Wait, so your core argument in this video comes off (to me) as: - Cardassia joined the Dominion because they were humiliatingly defeated by Starfleet. - Starfleet should have built more Galaxy class ships in order to defeat the Cardassians in an even more one-sided (humiliating) way. I'm sure you have a logical argument, this video just isn't communicating it very well or I am misunderstanding it completely.

The UFP didn't get into a total war, because they weren't trying to. They were trying to reform the Cardassians. The UFP was mostly intact from the border wars, or at least seemed to be, while Cardassia's military government was selling precious artifacts in order to fund their war efforts. This gives the UFP options, while limiting the Cardassians, especially when you have things like the Borg or the Romulans to worry about, or the Kzinti and Tholians before TNG started. This is supposition based on the events in DS9 seasons 3 and 4, that the Federation was doing it's darnedest to turn the Cardassians over to their way of thinking. Co-sponsored science missions, diplomatic treaties that gave the Bajorans their artifacts back, helping dissidents have a safe place in Federation territory, etc., which eventually lead to a Civilian revolution that put a civilian, not a military, government in charge of Cardassia. Then everything went to hell and the Klingons invaded due to Changeling influence and because they wanted to feel like they weren't the Federation's pets anymore. It's a little hard to groom a government and it's people into Federation membership when one of your former allies starts bombing the crap out of them and invading them for the possibility of 'Dominion influence'. Which, ironically, led to the Dominion wiping out the Maquis and kicking out the Klingons so that Dukat could 'Make Cardassia great again'. Had that not happened, the Federation would probably have been welcoming Cardassia as members within a generation or two.
@LoreReloaded

I don't know that I disagree with you. I think that the reason that Bajor was seceded and 'freed' was due to UFP political pressure. It's not even necessarily a bad idea.. it just turned out to be what it is..

Few points about Nebula vs Cardasians. I do not remeber every single detail of the episode but as far as I remeber it was not stated what ship that was. for all we know it could have been scout ship or other light non front line vessel. As for Nebula it had as far as my Starfleet specs goes 8 type X phaser banks to Galaxy class had 10 to 12 (depending on version and source) so only 2 to 4 diference here. It had only 2 phaser arrays. Now this requires explenation. Federation phasers used arrays (thos phaser fireing things on the dish) to make use of several of its phaser banks in one shot effectively multiplying power of each shot at the expense of umber of shots. Now for the photon torpedo lunchers it is true that Nebulas carried only two photon torpedo lunchers. What you neglected to mention was that those were burst 3 type torpedo lunchers this means that it could fire at once 10 torpedoes every 4 or 5 seconds or so. so 20 torpedoes at once. Galaxy class had exactly same torpedo armament as Nebula although it carried slightly bigger number of spear torpedoes. Unlike galaxy wich had one luncher facing forward and one aft Nebula had both of its lunchers facing forward. This mean it had efectively double Galaxy class torpedo output on its front arc. Counting all than and diference of size (Nebula being around 2/3 of galaxy size) Nebula seem to be very powerful ship desinged as torpedo boat with sorter operating range than Galaxy but superior firepower. There is also one more thing mentioned is nome of the sorces. Namely that Nebula had slightly superior aiming and controll system designed to handle torpedoe fight better. So Nebulas were actually superior in stright fight to Galaxy classes and there were around 50 of them build in comparison to 10 or so Galaxy class ships. Of course there is whideviariety of design specs and other details but Nebula seem to be indeed powerfull vessel. In coparison Cardassian Galor class (vessel most used through the series) and its advanced vertion Keldon class were inferior to both Galaxy and Nebula. Keldor had 4 torpedoe lunchers but they were sigle shot albeit with faster reload rate giving it total torpedo output of 8 in comparison to galaxy 10 (in goven arc of fire) or nebula 20 (number of spare torpedoes was only 25 less than in case of Galaxy). It also had 14 Medium power spiral wave disruptors wich as far as I know were inferior to federation type X phasers and one high power phaser bank (I am unsure how powerfull that was but seing it was often used as main weapon I presume preatty powerful). Unfortunatly Cardassians had inferior targetting technology. In the end one on one Keldon and Galor would loose to both Nebula and Galaxy but they were around half galaxy class and were designed to fight in squadrons of 3, wich changed situation drastically. One galaxy would have little change against 3 of those and cardassians build total of over 400 of Keldon alone. Of course Federation had much more other ships and cardassians were primarily using Galor and Keldons but still. So this argument at least seem to be invalid. I totally agree about wanting only to talk tho.

The Phoenix was definitively a Nebula class ship. This is based off design as well as the read outs that they give. The stats I gave on the Nebula Class was based on the very first variant (aptly named .. wait for it.. Phoenix Variant). The Nebula class was basically a poor mans Galaxy.. made so that you could pick and play modules for it to use. The Phoenix Variant was quite clearly a Scientific Module.. and we have no evidence that the battle module was ready or even in development during the Cardassian wars. All of that to say.. I intend to do a follow up video (atleast 2) on the Nebula class.

That's simply untrue during the TNG Era ship. The Phoenix Class ship had one phaser.. Maybe.. Maybe you could say two or three (if you consider the arrays on either side to be phaser arrays even though no canon supports this). There are other variants of the ships, specifically during the Dominion and Borg conflicts (post wolf-359, talking the battle of Sector-001) where they became supped up. However, during the TNG.. The Phoenix Class ship had - as most all resources say - one phaser bank which was on the secondary hull..however, I could be talked into three as the original model also had phaser strips on either side of above the nacelle..even though no resource says they existed and we never see them used in combat.

I don't quite understand some of your interpretations, even from the evidence that you yourself present. Gul Macet, in the clip you showed, talked about a Nebula-class starship as a force to be reckoned with, at least from the Cardassian's point of view. Sure the quantity of armaments might be lower than you expect, but look how quickly the Cardassian warship went down. (And it helped that the Starfleet ships have longer range) Personally, I don't think the Federation ever considered Cardassia to be a serious military threat. I also don't understand why you downplay the value of diplomacy. In the run-up to the Dominion War, the Founders were constantly trying to destabilize the alpha quadrant, and it was Federation diplomacy that prevented the Founders from taking the alpha quadrant unopposed. You seem to be making the case that the Federation should have built up a powerful military and conquered Cardassia during the Border Wars. That seems pretty hawkish. Particularly with a technologically inferior species like the Cardassians. (Yes, Dukat once said that Cardassian vessels were, "years ahead" of the Federation, but I'd say consider the source). So when should a Great Power use military force to bend its neighbors to its will? And when should it use diplomacy? Personally, I think a policy of non-agression is a pretty good general rule.

This is realist perspective on state relations (in this case-star civilizations). If you do not now this, then google it-realism in international relations. It makes perfect sense, but Federation has set of core principles that do not go well with realism. It is pacifist, isolationistic and non-interventionist force. Therefore although you may be right, it is irrelevant-unless Federation would change into something else. It would be interesting though to make an attemtp at analysis what Federation could really do in this situation and NOT violate its principles.

I don't see the federation as isolationist. I'd argue their expansionist/exploration ideal is part of their problem. Constantly wanting to add more members and discover new civilizations, combined with non-intervention and pacifism just means you find new enemies your not prepared for. (which to be fair is better then being found BY new enemies your not prepared for but still.) The UFP's fundamental social issue is the divide Sisco noted between those in the core and those outside it. Those in the core easily fall into complacency by assuming everything is fine everywhere, while those on the frontier know the reality. Given enough expansion time, a federation civil war between the core and the frontier's is basically inevitable. The cultures just diverge in ethics too much to remain together once pressure arrives. Worse, if a new threat to the federation that wasn't existential (so, more like the cardassians or Klingons then the Borg) emerged in the core area, the frontier could potentially say "It's your problem, you deal with it." and leave the defenseless core flapping in the wind. A large scale extrapolation (IE what I'd do if handed the reigns) would be to have a 'star fleet' and a 'frontier fleet', divided along the 'peaceful explorers' and 'armed defense force' lines. Spend a season following some people in the Frontier Fleet and then have something spark the powder keg into said civil conflict, even if it's just a cold war for a season. a solid 3-4 seasons worth of story (counting that first one) could end with either the federation splitting star-fleet into a defense and an exploratory core, or the breakup of the federation. (The former likely going over much better with audiences then the latter)
@Zarrov
@Zarrov 7 лет назад
I think you are just inputing things that you find interesting into the setting. To certain degree this is what DS9 writers did, hence observations that Sisko made, but since this was aired o TV it is canon. I disagree with most of what you said. This is overinterpretation and extrapolation of Maquis situation onto whole setting. Federation is not expanding. Federation allows others to join if they wish and they fulfill requirements. They do not make other civilzations join them. The "expansion" of Federation is simply others wanting to join and starting process of becoming a member. Federation was growing pretty fast in its first century, but then it stopped around 150 members, because there was no one else to add that would fulfill requirements and wanted to be part of union. There were rare exceptions, like Bajor, were status of "protectorate" was given via mutual agreement, but this essentially means that civilization is recognized as fulfilling requirements materially but not formally, so they have to wait some time. Bajor shoudl easily become part of Federation, but they couldnt because they needed to have 100 years of peace. This was simly impossible just after getting rid of Cardassian occupation. And you can see in DS9 why this rule exists-Bajorans were still dominated by this experience and couldnt let it go. But in theory, if not for Cardassian occupation-Bajor would be able to join in no time, because they fulfilled all requirements easily. Other exmples include species that got into contact with higher civilizations, but have no warp, but at the same time fuflill all other rquirements etc. So they cannot join technically, but practically are there. Federation is a metaphore of Western Civilization and reactions of others towards Federation are metaphors of resentment towards Western Civ on part of other human cultures that view its sucess and general atractiveness as danger to their existence and traditions. The claims of Federation being insidious etc. is essentially salty guy making salty comments that their civilzation is not as attractive and cannot produce culture that others want to adapt.

While the federation principles and ideals are sound and preferred to war the fact that they chose to not back up words with their overwhelming might when needed in the end was a poor choice. I mean they do not needs to eradicate the enemies but they could make a show of force or flag presence in such a way that would give pause to anyone considering not talking and figuring things out in a fair and peacefull way. the federation decided to switch from peacefull exploration ships (advanced and armed but still not true warships) a bit late. If they would of decided to increase war ship rpoduction as a precaution even 1 year or so before it would of saved a lot of problems.

actually, in the case of the federation, you have totally missed one important point. the prime directive, which the federation council would have followed closely. also, you missed how in "the wounded", a galaxy class ship disabled a galor class with no trouble. the cardassian war was not really a stalemate, as the federation had no desire to destroy another nation. and the maquis did create their own situation by deciding to stay in the de-militarized zone. true they had built lives and homes there, but any sober assessment would say that was a bad idea.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
The prime directive applies to prewarp civilizations and internal struggles...of which neither of these apply. The resources state that the battles were a stalemate with the federation unwilling to move towards bringing in heavier guns.. And as for the maquis.. Sure they could have moved.. So could people from the middle East right? Just get up and move..that easy...even if it's your home..even if you can't afford it..just do it..
@kenmazoch8499
@kenmazoch8499 7 лет назад
you are wrong on the prime directive. it states that the federation will not interfere with other cultures. and you must remember that the federation is run by civilians, to whom this law would be the controling factor in relations with others. the federation did not assist gowron, the legitimate leader of the Klingons, during their civil war, because of this non-interference policy, even though the Klingons were allies, because the civil war was an internal matter. non-interference. the same thing applied to the cardassians during their war with the Klingons, because there was no treaty or alliance with them, so the federation could not assist them, or the Klingons either, because of the non-interference directive. also, the federation was going to move the colonists from the de-militarized zone, they did not have to do it themselves.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
..I assure you I'm not. It states that the federation will not ineterfere in internal matters, nor will it expose itself to prewarp/less advanced civilizations. (memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Prime_Directive - Tos: Bread and Circus, TNG: First Contact) - It does not mean that they wont get involved when their own interests are involved - especially with advanced societies. And while I agree that the Federation is run by a civillian government, we know that starfleet made the calls - even against that government. Picard broke the Prime Directive over 9 times, Kirk violated it over 11 times, and sisko atleast 3.. not to mention utilizing CHEMICAL WEAPONS AGAINST THE MAQUIS. Towards your piece on the Klingons, I've stated that the Federation does not generally interfere in internal affairs of species (Though they have, How did the Romulans enter the Dominion War again?) - They were at war with the Cardassians. They had every opportunity to beat the Cardassians well into their territory - and instead stale mated.. By choice. This was not because of the prime directive but an overly pacifistic Starfleet. Now, during the Klingon-Cardassian War.. That wasnt an internal struggle. The Federation also definitively did not stay neutral. They refused and condemned the Klingons. The /civillian/ government did this. Starfleet assisted in protecting convoys to cardassia. They were apart of the war half-heartedly. Had they came out on one side or the other, the dominion war may not have occured at all.

but, you missed the entire point I was making, that the federation council made the decision not to become involved, as stated in the meeting on ds9 in "way of the warrior" and they had no treaty or alliance, which is why they could not intervene on the side of the cardassians, and were allies of the Klingons, so all they would be able to do, both politically and legally was protest and condemn the invasion, without open hostilities with the Klingons, but even then, the federation council would be reluctant to enter into a war against an in support of a hostile, if not enemy, government. and the instances of violating the prime directive you site were the actions of individual captains for a specific situation, not the policy of the federation council. I realize you did much research on this, but you just missed or misunderstood the situation here, as regards the possibility of federation intervention.

I typically like these videos, but this one was pretty tough to watch. For 1) it makes a lot of assumptions about Cardassian capabilities based on 1 single skirmish between a "warship" of unknown type and strength and a Nebula class vessel. We know from other TNG episodes that the Galor class ship is comparable to Galaxy class vessels, so you're underselling the Caradassians right from the get-go. Additionally, your criticism of the Federation choosing to build weaker ships when they could just build Galaxy class ships seems to ignore any sense of reality. Even in a post-scarcity society with replicators, the Federation would still build "weaker" ships in higher numbers then their top-of-the-line models for one simple fact: time is still a valuable resource. The more powerful the ship, the more complex it is, which means it takes more time to build. If StarFleet can build 5 Nebula class ships or 1 Galaxy class ship in the same amount of time, which one is more valuable to roll off the assembly line assuming all other concerns being equal? You're also underselling the Nebula class itself, since it can be specialized in a variety of ways, including for defense. Of the dozens of these kinds of videos I've seen, this is probably the weakest one. It makes a lot of incorrect assumptions in order to drive to a conclusion that somewhat seems predetermined.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
I'm not completely sure where you're getting some of your information. A Galor class ship was not - at any point - comparable to a galaxy class. At all. There are many sources but you can check - but here's one: memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Galor_class I base the Federation's ability to build more ships on a few things. First, we see that the federation has the military might to build warships at a record number during the Dominion War. If you take just a quarter of the power they were putting into the dominion war - the cardassian border wars would not have been an issue. I'll completely agree that to build a Galaxy Class ship is ten times what it is to build a Nebula Class ship. I'll even grant that I undersold the Nebula class ship (going to do a video and have a live stream tonight at about 8:30pm cst - if you can come hang out). I do think that was my one glaring error. But still.. Once the war machine that is the federation gets going, it's not hard for it. Consider this to.. Remember the defeat of Wolf 359? At the end its stated that fleet can be rebuilt in a year.. a year. Now, those were some very, very old ships.. but if they can do that in a year - what could they do in a few years? I feel that my assumptions are well researched - but that said, I'm never against criticism and if we granted you are completely right.. The law of statistics says one will be bad ;) Though I disagree somewhat, I'll still take your criticism and .. at a minimum if I am right.. consider I should take more time to prove my point.

Lore Reloaded take into consideration how Earth centric Starfleet is to have all its facilities for building in sector 001. Why not build other shipyards on Andoria or somewhere else. Its always been the thing that if you take earth out the ufp falls. Sf also “assimilates” other world’s militias or militaries. Yet only build shops in sector 001. Why not use the old shipyards of the 150 members? Why are all ufp sf designs just a variation of old United Earth ships. In Enterprise the Andorians and. Vulcans have very unique designs that should be incorporated.

Now in later times, when variants were created due to the borg invasions, dominion war, et al. - The Nebula Class became a beast. I do think I underscored how hearty it was in this video - but I still stand by it's current armaments (perhaps having 3 phasers instead of one)

While I love Star Trek, I have grown to loathe the UFP. First, they are mired in bureaucracy. Its internal policies, such as the Prime Directive, while a wise policy in regards to pre-warp species, is a huge burden when it comes to dealing with other space-faring civilizations. as we can see with the Klingon-Cardassian war. They remained neutral in the conflict because of the Prime Directive and nothing else. Second, Starfleet seems to hold way too much power. How many times do we have Admirals going crazy and nearly overthrowing the government? It would seem that the Federation Council is little more than a puppet state being run from behind the scenes by a military clique mostly made up of Humans and that member species are left without a real voice in galactic affairs. Third, Starfleet is woefully unequipped to deal with external threats due to their focus on diplomacy and negociations. While this helps them avoid conflicts with smaller powers, such as the Tzenkethi (sp?) or the Tholians, they are instantly at a disadvantage when dealing with a civilization that matches their power, or exceeds it. Just look at the Dominion War...The Federation had an effective bottleneck with the Wormhole. When it became apparent that the Cardassians could join the Dominion, they should have set up a blockade, preventing any Gamma Quadrant ships from coming in and ending any colonization efforts in their territory (except for listening posts). To be fair, this blockade should have been set up much earlier, after the destruction of the Odyssey. But no, the Defiant and DS9's Runabouts were the only Starfleet ships in the area, leaving the Bajoran system open for conquest. True, Bajor had not officially joined the UFP at that time, but I am certain the Bajorans would have gladly accepted a Federation fleet blockading the Wormhole, especially if the idea was sold to them by The Emissary. To be blunt, the UFP is quite similar to the modern-day United Nations. Both are ineffectual, byzantine entities that spend way too much time debating issues when real people are suffering. The only true strength of the UFP comes from it being a much larger power (in terms of size) compared to others in its neighborhood of the galaxy.

It's interesting how history's turn can seem like a domino effect. and that's what this was a domino effect with the Cardassians being thrown out of any major power. I even think the bajorians had their hand with taking back their own planet against the original occupation while I know it might seem like coincidence with the wormhole being near bajor, it was still one of the first targets in the war while part of it was control of the wormhole for dominion reinforcements Gul Dukat said they would reclaim all territory they lost and bajor was certainly territory that the cardassians lost.
@LoreReloaded

Bajor was also personnel to Dukat. I wouldn't have been surprised if he would have lost the war if it meant Bajor being a Cardassian territory again.

For me, this is both the Federation's greatest strength and greatest weakness. The Federation champions diplomacy, it is almost literally what it is built off of after all, and it wields immense power in the Alpha Quadrant. Starfleet has had a history of being in phases between exploratory and militaristic depending on the situation. Sure, by the time of the start of Next Gen, they had some very powerful ships like the Galaxy class, but Starfleet hadn't had a major enemy since the Klingons, and so had devoted not just their resources but their mentality towards exploration and diplomacy thud they were ill-prepared to handle the situation that arose with the Cardassions and do I need to mention the Borg. Yet look what happened after that; they made ships like the Defiant and the Akira class, warships that really showcased the power Starfleet could wield. Take a look at the designs of Starfleet throughout each era of Star Trek, and I think you can see the mentality they had in those uniform designs. Might be a topic worth looking into at some point.
@LoreReloaded

Question: Wouldn't the Klingons have joined the Federation in the "Border" walls as their ally under the treaty of Khitomer Accords? I mean with a bunch of Klingons lusting for war, no matter how peaceful Star Fleet was by mid 24th Century standards, they'd still have 2-1 odds.

I'm not sure what the argument is here: you're saying that the Federation's reluctance to be aggressive against the Cardassians and/or the Klingons helped cause the Dominion War? ST has well established that StarFleet isn't primarily a military organisation, and they will always try to sue for peace instead of fighting total wars (As was the case in the negotiated settlement of the border wars). What did you expect them to do? Destroy Cardassia?
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 7 лет назад
I'm saying that the fact that the Federation decided to stale mate versus actually winning the war had consequences. And the fact that they stayed on the fence during the Klingon-Cardassian war.. has consequences to. And I don't remember ever saying to destroy Cardassia. Not sure I ever advocated Genocide of any kind. I did say that if they had pushed cardassians back to Cardassia.. it's unlikely that would have been a foothold for the dominion.
@hosank
@hosank 7 лет назад
hmm, didn't imply that you were advocating Genocide. To rephrase, my question was: What would be the conditions for a federation victory in the "Border Wars?". I would agree with you that the stalemate situation is rather odd. You correctly point out that Federation tech is quite a deal stronger than that of the Cardassians (At least in TNG, since DS9 Cardassians seem more advanced). Yet the show sort of glosses over the actual negotiations that created the demilitarised zone, and pushed the Federation to cede so many worlds already colonised by federation citizens to Cardassia. Why would a galactic power which surclasses the Cardassians as much as the UFP need to compromise by stabbing their own citizens in the back? and then stick to this decision so stubbornly that they frequently collaborate with their former foe to subdue the rightfully angry colonists (now reorganised as a maquis) all in an effort to keep this uneasy peace going? You do point out in your other videos that the Federation had grown accustomed to peace. This may have caught StarFleet off guard when fighting a technologically inferior, yet more determined foe.

I wonder who (likey klingons) are now using the old dominion shipyards that sirvived. I think it would be neat if klingons in the near future have a hint of dominon design in some of their vessels. Just like how their cloak came from the romulans. As for The federation they might not be designed for combat but this comes down to "the man not the gun" the tools the federation ships do have at their desposal especially on a nebula complements the combined tallents of starfleet crew. Which has always been their strangth. By time tng hit I honestly dont think the romulans or the klingons especially and the cardassians can compete even with the federation restraining itself. When they decided to develop a cloak. They made something that has the potential to go to the centre of a sun. It dont matter if they have two phaser banks when there is a cadet onboard that has managed to manipulate time with his mind lol. Ok ok. Even without crusher "famed engineers that can make replicators out of.animal pelts" or something like that, from the mouth of a vorta.

That's all well and good to say the Federation could've done something, but that would require its member worlds to agree to a course of action that would lead to the deaths of many of their people and for what? To save some far off world few have ever heard of? Moreover, a long protracted war with the Cardassians could've been the opportunity the Romulans were looking for to come out of isolation and attack so the Federation probably kept that in mind.

They tended to pick and choose when they followed hte Prime Directive. Additionally, nothing in the Prime Directive prevented them from being in a war between the Klingons and Cardassians..Both warp drive capable - not an internal matter. And depending on the era.. they were explorers and soldiers.. The Original Series, Original Series movies - they were very much soldiers.. as well as explorers. Deep Space Nine the same way.. TNG effectively not at all if picard is to be believed.. Voyager tended to pick adn choose based on the episode ;P Enterprise they were the weakest kid on the block and couldn't do much more than be diplomats.. Discovery we've only ever seen them at war with a few pieces of lip service to being explorers.

The reason why the Federation didn't fully commit itself to the border wars is the same as why the US and NATO didn't send everything they had into Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1995, or why the British Imperial army only had 2,900 soldiers taking the field in the First Boer War of 1880-81. The scale of the 'threat' simply didn't warrant such a large investment. As for the apparent lack of action regarding the later wars, the ones Cardassia had with the Klingons and Maquis, I believe this was all a part of the Federation's grand strategy. They were willing to tolerate the annexation of some Cardassian territory if it meant they could step in as benign guardians over the rest of it, as cynical as a political bureaucracy can be the Federation was happy to let the Klingons and Maquis commit what were essentially war crimes. Just look at how fast they were to jump onto Bajor even before they knew about the wormhole, the Federation was a vulture circling the Cardassian carcass. The only reason why things changed, why the Federation intervened against the Klingons is because of Dominion interference. And the reason why so little was committed to this endeavour is because, again, the Federation's plan was still what it was before, they hadn't had time to change things, to rearrange the fleets and develop real anti-Klingon sentiment among the general population that would make them tolerate significant losses in a prolonged war. What we got instead was the Starfleet elite declaring war to protect their own interests and position of power, and while we all know they were correct in this action the same cannot be said of most Federation citizens.

We don't know if Nebula class ships fought in the Border Wars. Most likely they didn't. Clearly, the Nebula class is a complimentary class to the Galaxy class since they both use the same components. (Nebula was a kit bash of the Galaxy.) The Nebula class ship in the episode you showed destroying a cardassian ship was not equipped with the sensor module that you showed in the video, it was equipped with a weapons pod DESIGNED FOR COMBAT. It had more than once torpedo launcher and more than the number of phaser emitters you numbered in the video.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 6 лет назад
It's stated that they were there in the border wars, i'm almost one hundred percent sure. And yes, it was designed with a sensor kit. That's the only ships available as of this time. War era ships wouldn't be till much later.

@DarinRWagner 6 лет назад
No, the Phoenix, which was the first Nebula class ship we saw (in the very episode you showed a clip from, "The Wounded") had the weapons pod... not the sensor pod that you showed elsewhere in the video. Further, the Nebula class was a contemporary of the Galaxy class, which was still considered a brand new class of ship at the time of TNG's start.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 6 лет назад
+Darin Wagner Thats..not the weapons pod but ok.
@DarinRWagner
@DarinRWagner 6 лет назад
I sit corrected. You are right about the weapons pod vs sensor pod on the Phoenix. I got the two of them mixed up. All I'm saying is that the Phoenix wasn't small potatoes, even with a sensor pod. The Cardassians were punks with ships that were probably about as powerful as Kirk's TOS Enterprise (IMO). I imagine that the bulk of Starfleet's ships during the Border Wars were probably aging Miranda, Excelsior and Constellation class ships... with the mightiest probably being the Ambassador class. Cardassians definitely benefited from upgrades later on, as their ships were shown holding their own against comparably-sized Federation and Klingon ships on ST:DS9.

I completely disagree that the Federation didn't start the war. They were told to stay out of the Gamma Quadrant and they just kept poking their noses in it. The Bajorians even created a colony in space that the Dominion claimed. The Dominion didn't go venturing around the Alpha Quadrant, they simply reacted to Federation incursions. The Dominion even destroyed a Galaxy Class by ramming it and still the Federation wouldn't stop using the worm hole. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Also, the US managed a fleet of nearly 550 odd ships in the 80's cold war. That is one country of 250 million people doing that. The Federation should have Trillions of people and should be able to maintain not only a sizable exploration fleet, say 5k ships, but also several combat fleets scattered about with the best ships they could build, and each of them should have had another 3-5k ships, with I'm guessing at least 6 battle fleets. This is at an absolute minimum. And mine fields, lots and lots of minefields around strategic systems. And why not planetary shields and Star Fortresses loaded for bear at each member world? In D&D terms, Lawful Good is not a suicide pact.

Lore Reloaded had brain fart on the vessel type yeah i meant akira. You fail to mention that the federation and star fleet don't believe in warships and that they usually don't start wars. As such they don't invade enemy territory or go for a military victory they under nornal circumstances will continue to seek a diplomatic solution that's why they didn't seek to deal a crippling blow to the cardassians. As for the cardassian-klingon war the federation did eventually enter and fight the klingons which is what the dominion wanted. They wanted the alpha and beta quadrant powers to weaken themselves by fighting amongst eachother. Destroying the cardassians would not have prevented the dominion war the dominion merely would have chose a more militaristic start to the war than claim to be aiding the cardassians while they set up fleet yards and supply depots. They would've stormed the alpha quadrant with thousands of ships and wiped out deep space 9 and bajor. Also the galaxy class has 12 phaser arrays and 3 photon torpedo launchers. One torpedo launcher is on the saucer section and only useable after seperation, while one of the phaser arrays is beneath the saucer on the star drive section also only useable after seperation. Compare that to the sovereign class with 16 phaser arrays and 10 torpedo launchers.

They could have pushed the Cardassians back, even without dedicated warships! Fact is: The Federation didn't have a stomach for war (despite the fact that they were surrounded by hostile powers - the Zenkathy (spelling?), the Klingons (yes, allies but that can change very fast as we've seen in DS9, the Romulans (who they appeased with a shitty treaty that bans cloaking tech being used by the Federation!), the Ferengi (all first contacts were violent - Stargazer being mission-killed after barely defeating a Ferengi ship through Picard's tactical ingeniuty (note: Even after that Picard is still naive as fuck IMHO), etc. etc.!) and accepted numerous bad peace-deals! The one with the Romulans, the one with the Klingons (they should have let them face the consequences of their war-like nature after Praxis blew up by not helping!) and the one with the Cardassians! Eddington was right! Hell, Sisko is a bloody hypocrite! He knows how easy it is to "...be a saint in paradise..." but he himself isn't any better! He hunts those who do not have the luxury because the "saints in paradise" sold their planets to the Cardassians in a shitty deal while they themselves knew that their planets (Vulcan, Tellar Prime, Earth, Andoria, Risa, Betazed etc.) would never be given away for a crappy peace deal! Seriously, the Federation is fucked up unless you happen to live on Earth (I wounder why people aren't migrating there in droves! Seriously, they should have a migrant crisis!) No, the Cardassians always were a third rate power next to the Federation, the Klingons and the Romulans! Their technology was worse than that of the great powers, they had less territory, less ressources and less manufacturing base (that is why as the war dragged on they couldn't replenish their numbers fast enough! Yes they could breed soldiers (Jem'hadar!), but not build enough ships fast enough! Seriously, the Cardassians are like Nazi-Germany in WW2, but without the technological superiority being on their side, nope it was the other way round! The only thing the Cardassians have going for them? Disziplin, hard work and the Obsidian Order and that was not enough - or at least it wouldn't have been if the Federation really meant business in the war! But no: For the Federation it was a minor struggle and they wanted peace at - almost - any cost!

Akira class ships came after this war . As far as why not as many galaxy class ships ... the reasoning was that they where very expensive to build , that's why not so many where built . The reasoning for not attacking was none interference. As you have so eloquently mentioned in other videos , since the federation was "not supposed to be" a military force , rather mainly an exploration fleet , they didn't invest in more powerful ships . Also , even the venerated galaxy wasn't up to snuff (so to speak) and had to be upgraded to be more effective during the war . Having said all this , this vid is an interesting take on what went down . 🖖

It's unclear how many Galaxy-class ships Starfleet constructed. But you have to remember that Starfleet's philosophy wasn't winning wars or defeating enemy species, but holding them off until they could win them over as allies. That reflected the pacifistic beliefs of Gene Roddenberry, whose vision of the future was unbearably naive. That's why DS9 was the best of the Trek series, precisely because it depicted a far more realistic view of what that future would look like. Ron Moore could only work from the foundation Roddenberry laid.

When the Federation wants to or needs to blow things up, it can. When even starships dedicated to exploration can go toe-to-toe with the best warships other governments have to offer, an angry--or scared--Federation is probably not something you want to provoke. But even a partial militarization of Starfleet to combat-centric starships goes against Federation ideals. It's those ideals which, imo, can be the greatest weakness such as in dealing with the Cardassians. The Prime Directive, specifically. The 'non-interference' bullshit that can do more harm than good. The Federation didn't need to go full-blitz on Cardassia. Technologically superior and resource rich, it could have offered the Union real solutions to its problems. Peaceful alternatives to aggressive expansion to fulfill its needs. When you have technology that can provide almost anything a society needs, opting for even limited conflict instead of sharing it--because, ya know, that would violate the precious Prime Directive--is just stupid. Billions ended up dying because the Federation hamstrung itself with a policy preventing it from helping when it could.

The problem with your whole argument is your american point of view. Just because you've alot of "military" equipment, doesn't mean you have to use it as a methode to influence and persuade other nations to your liking. Starfleet isn't simply a military organisation and therefore starships are not purely built for combat. Yes they can defend them selfs and in chase of the larger ships also other instalations or systems but that is not their primary purpose. If one follows this mindset than it is easy to understand why the conflict between the Union and Starfleet took so long. Starfleet doesn't fight battles or wars simply to defeat an enemy. It fights them to defend it self and to get the opposing party to the table in order to negotiate a treaty. Best example: look what Picard did during the first encounter with a Borg ship or what Kirk did during his first encounter with the Romulans. The Federation is not the USA and Starfleet isn't the US Navy so you can't judge Starfleet/Federation by current military or social standards back in the US.

First, you're assuming my nationality. There are people around the world whom have both my accent and mannerisms that aren't American. Secondly, I don't see any correlation between what the actual Canon of Star Trek is and US military might. During the Dominion War.. Starfleet specifically made starships for war.. Akira and Defiant class are warships in the truest sense of the war. But if we remove all that and you only refer to the border wars.. by not using 'military might'.. people died. They chose not to use 'military might' and it got peopled killed.
