As the "fellow angler" and a novice you helped, thanks for the buzzer, the advice and the video Rhys! It was a pleasure to meet you and a joy to watch you in action. Your modesty prevented you from saying your first fish was literally on your second cast (no edits!) and your first three were within more like 5 minutes than 8! You make it look easy....I STILL blanked!!!.....but I'm determined to put your video to good use! Thanks for your videos, they're really informative and great quality (sorry about the intrusion, you took it well....I didn't expect to feature! 😲). Diolch!

Hi John, I was watching you in the background and feeling for you. Been in your boots many times. First subscribed to Rhys's channel 18 months ago and it transformed my fishing last season. His knowledge of his quarry, the environment they live in and his ability to read the water is second to non. A pleasure to watch a true Gentleman and Master at work. An absolute credit to our sport.

@@seanl1054 Hi Sean, thanks for sharing my pain! 😃 Yes, Rhys is a gentleman. He is so modest and helpful in his videos, he comes across as a true mentor; it's what gave me the courage to approach him in the first place. I really didn't want to interrupt his filming! Now I have a new practical challenge for him, an entirely new series of videos: 'Rhys Fishes.....with THAT TW@T'.....now there's a challenge.....I'd subscribe, if only for the comedy value!! Forget Mortimer and Whitehouse....we'd make them look like 'Panorama Investigates Fly Fishing!' The viewers would cry with laughter...and poor Rhys would just cry! 😄 😁 🤣 😂

@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
very much depends on the time of year and fishery you're at. One thing I would say is slow everything right down. Overcast and wind allow you a bit more freedom to make mistakes and move flies fast etc... Sun and flat calm have the complete opposite effect and everything is elongated, so fish small, fish slow and you'll get interest from fish.

Great vedio! You are an excellent angler.. Curious. ..I live in the US and it's good to see you have great fishing for good sized trout. Are thoes private lakes? Do they fertilize them? They seem so developed with all the docks with artificial turf? In my state of Oregon we have very few private lakes , but 1,400 public lakes. Most with a road and some with primitive camp grounds. Some are stocked, but none are fertilized. I greatly admire the well developed techniques and understanding that you have raised to a high degree. My own pursuit has benefited from your shared vedios..!! Thank you! just jim

Hi Rhys, Great video! Got a question about droppers. See when a dropper gets too short after changing flies, I tend to cut off the dropper and leave the knot. I then take a pre-tied dropper with a perfection loop at the end and loop it in like a sliding dropper. Is that something you (other comp anglers) do? Or do you do something different?
@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
If a dropper knot gets too short, I’ll normally just tie a fresh leader but that’s just preference. Most anglers will just attatch on another dropper leader to the existing knot 👍

Hi Rhys Just looking for a little advice really on buzzer fishing, specifically when limited to fishing with just one fly. I entered a competition last week and the rules stated single fly cast only and no bungs. There was a good hatch of buzzers and the fish were definitely on them. I found it really hard to keep the one fly in the right water collum. Chopped and changed my tippet length but in the end lost confidence and ended up pulling lures even though I knew this wasn't the best method on the day. What would you suggest when limited to a single fly when buzzer fishing and not being able to use a bung or indicator
@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
Hey Gareth. So it’s a challenge, no doubt about it. The buzzer will forever be in and out of the water column and the only way to get it nailed is to start with a long leader and reduce it down as you go until you hit the sweet spot. It looks like you’ve tried this based on what you’ve said, so your on the right track. More often than not, it’s easier to go with a more lightweight buzzer (cove’s pheasant tail buzzer) when having to adopt single fly method, as this fly will flutter more slowly through the columns than a modern resin buzzer will and therefore sit where you need it too. We’re there fish rising at all? If there were my preference would have been to go to a single dry instead as this takes out the problem of the water columns
@garethlomas3082
@garethlomas3082 Год назад
The fish were rising early in the morning and I managed a few on a top hat suspended buzzer but by 10am the sun had pushed them down to about 4ft but still actively feeding. Other anglers were catching on the single buzzer. I think I just got frustrated as I struggled to keep the one fly in the right area for a long enough time so like I said lost confidence and switched methods which I know was wrong but I just got it in my head I was never going to catch with the one buzzer not being able to keep it at that 4 ft point long enough

Great video! What method were you using to detect strikes on the washing line rig? It looked like you struck well before the line moved.
@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
With the washing line I applied mucilin to about 2ft of the end of the fly line. That ensured that it sat as high in the water as possible with a 3 fly cast on. Then it was just a cast of watching the end of that fly line for any movement. If it suddenly pulled away or twitched I would strike. Most of the fish that day didn’t rip the line out of your hands, which is why watching the end of the line and reacting quickly paid dividends. Hope that helps 🎣

Hi mate, just out of curiosity, is it essential to have tippet on the end of your tapered leader? I've recently started fly fishing. And I've noticed pretty much every fly I throw on seems to be hitting the bottom and collecting weeds even after a few seconds! Where I want to fish like 2ft down? How do I correct this? I'd appreciate your help mate
@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
I’m assuming your talking about a shop bought leader? If so, then yes and no. Yes - because you’ll gradually wear away at the tapered leader if you don’t supplement it with a few feet of independent leader. No - it can work without it but it’ll cause the issue that’s described above. If you’re snagging bottom and not moving the flies, the next step is to reduce the leader length 👍

@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
Any form of white yarn will suffice blackfur, I've caughton fluoro white Glo bright as well as polypropylene type materials. I don't think which type of white you choose makes a huge difference, as long as the size, profile and colour matches the food type at the time then you're good to go!

@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
Straight lining can still work. You can just change the leader set up. I used to fish a lake where fish sat at 10ft feeding on buzzer. So when straight lining a three fly cast you’d have a leader of around 24ft. Your first fly would be at 10ft, second at 16ft, third at 24ft. It’s not for the faint hearted but it was the most consistent method we used to catch fish on buzzers at depth. You could also switch a floater out for a sink tip to help get the flies down.

@@jamesmcinnes4290 try a single buzzer under an indicator but set the depth to where you think the fish are. That can also work and require less complexity

Please could you do a video on how to tie the straight line method. One fly after the other etc I’m really struggling with it. I have tried tying straight to the next fly, tried to tie droppers but they just get in a tangle. Please help. Ps really enjoy your videos

@@RhysFishes well thanks. Done well with green and pink apps over winter, and more natural stuff the last few weeks. Done really well with a diawl type pattern, black cock hackle tail, black organza body, white goose biot cheeks cut to about 2 mm, orange thread head. Works great straight lining, washing line or static

Noticed that you were the only angler sitting/kneeling to fish so lowering your profile against the skyline, do you think this contributed to your success on the day?
@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
Partly yes. One of those fish took in very close and I doubt he would have taken the fly so confidently had I been stood up and walking around on the platform 🙂

I can't understand any of the important words you say due to your english accent. I imagine others have a similar issue.. i like your videos bc i take notes for later but idk what ur saying. Maybe add text boxes for the name of the flies (the odd ones that aren't ubiquitous)

Whenever I see northern European fly fishermen fishing in pool size "lakes", I feel sincerely sorry for them. Does the concept of undivided public land exist in these countries? Can they just park their car and go fishing lakes and rivers in the middle of nowhere? Does in the middle of nowhere public land exist in England?

Sadly it does not. All running water is club run and requires a memebership / fees or a waiting list. Lakes or small stillwaters are a norm for us and form a strong proportion of the fishing that we do in the UK (at a price). There’s some misconception where people think that these are stockies which will take a standard dog nobler or lure and take little skill to catch. But what people fail to understand is that catch and release forms a huge proportion of these successful fisheries. And by design you could be attempting to catch a fish that has wised up and been caught several times before. Blanks are regular and it isn’t a reflection of a basic anglers skill but actually because they’re fishing for pressured fish who don’t succumb easily. Sometimes you’ll watch a video and see somewhere do really well and make it look easy. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, but that the angler has worked hard to find a nuance or method that even the most wary trout will succumb to on any given day. Hope that helps 😊
