Station Rebuild - Part 6 - Yorkshire Dales Model Railway

I have a crack at building a stone platform shelter this week.
I’ve used Wills stone sheets and slate tiles for the roofs. The windows are also from Wills, and the glazing its packaging. The hardest part is cutting/drilling/slicing out the windows.
For painting I used three colours. Beige emulsion, a black wash, and maroon for the drain pipes.
Pretty basic but it finishes off the opposite platform nicely without blocking the view of the main station building.
As always, thank you for watching!

Thank you for your inspiring model videos. Your skills are fabulous, as you enthuse us all. I seldom make comments as I am usually watching on the lounge tele, family viewing infact. You make everything look so easy, but your human touch with everything brings the Dales into our homes. Please don't stop.

The scratch built waiting shelter looks great against the other station buildings. Finishes the scene very well . Weathering of buildings suits the Yorkshire Dales scene and complements the trains running through station. Coal siding looks great too.😀

Good to see some scratch building. The shelter looks very inviting I was expecting an open one when I saw the description. For glazing I use the plastic covers from Oxford diecast. It is very clear and glues well with styrene cement. The wills sheet is pretty hard to cut yes. I began a building a while ago using it Have to agree cutting out the windows is the hardest part
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 5 лет назад
Yes I agree it’s definitely not the easiest of materials to work this, but does look the part when finished and painted. I’ve got some of the oxford plastic covers so I’ll use them next time. Thanks very much :-)

Nice one Lewis! It's all looking so good! I've come back to railway modelling after a 30 + year break, and I'm amazed that my dubious skills are still relevant and also the availability of bits and bobs. ( my old Mainline locos with my scratch bodies still run a dream and still look good as I've always done Light Railways) Les's idea of slug barrier tape is a damned good one that I'll use - have plenty of that living in a 400 year old cottage with most of the wild critters on the planet! Regards Teresa.
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 5 лет назад
Thank you Teresa. That’s amazing - it’s funny how well a lot of the older stuff holds up. I agree, I’ll pick some up at some point and give it a try - it will have the added bonus of repelling any pesky slugs from squatting in my buildings... Nothing better than realising you’ve already got the materials you need just sitting around at home ready to go! Thanks again, always appreciate your comments.

Hi MR, for someone your age who has not been modelling for that many years I have to admired the standard of your modelling skills, which I think are amazing. The work you did making the platform shelter is first class and fits the scene exactly as you have stated. Cheers Greg PS: Love the sound effects when you flick the pieces of plastic of the working area.

Flicking the cut pieces of plastic with that sound effect was the highlight. After all this time I use a pin vice to cut windows and I see you using a power drill making it much easier and quicker. Going to do that from now on. The building has come up well and is a perfect addition to the layout. Clint
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 5 лет назад
Thanks Clint. The drill works well, it’s a lot of effort to cut a small hole in a piece of plastic isn’t it - not the easiest stuff to work with, but does look good. Thanks again mate.

Brilliant job on the station building, I love the British road services AEC Mandator lorry (I think) at the beginning of the video. One of my endearing memories as a child was train spotting back in the 60's at Bolton goods yard and those little three wheeled Scammell Scarab lorries flying around the yard dropping/collecting trailers. What memories.brilliant channel thank you.

Absolutely fantastic! Love the lorry in the goods yard. Great station building, much better than my wooden attempt at one! It's got that classic smoke blackened look to the building, just as you see on the keighley and worth valley. I wondered if you thought about using glue 'n' glaze for the windows, as you said you had trouble with the plastic. Also love that mk1 brake in maroon. Are you panning on any oil stains on the track where locomotives wait? I have made mine with gloss varnish and black paint, mixed into a thick gloopy paste that is applied in patches on the track. On my layout I've had a go at weathering a hornby shark and making a meadow out of a faded grassy field on a corner. Oh wouldn't it be useful if you could post pictures on RU-vid! Also done some general tidying up of the station area and built my crane kit. Should have a video up tonight of the collett goods on a photo charter with that. At the moment as well as the crane charter running, I'm enjoying running my 'cornishman' evening dining service on. Trains for the weekend are collett goods, SR c class, and 14xx. Anyway, looking forward to your next update, great video.

Thanks David! 👍🏻 Do you mean the track plan or the station building? I just made the track plan up myself, I never really use any plans but the station is very very loosely based on Goathland on the NYMR though with the two tracks and footbridge. The building was another one I made up as I went along, but again used some photos of the Goathland station building as a guide.

Just thinking Mr Mouldy. If you use white and do a crows foot with a number on the side it would be about right. One at the platform ramp end, one at the ramp top, every 60ft through platform (240mm) would look good. You would only have to do the facing side. The datums would match your modelling era.
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 5 лет назад
Okay that’s really helpful, thank you. I don’t suppose you have any links to prototype photos do you?
@johnbrown9092
@johnbrown9092 5 лет назад
Mouldy Raspberry . There is a load of stuff on the net but cannot find what I am looking for. If you paint a small white arrow pointing upwards with a number above it, starting at 0, you will be ok. The more modern datum plates have nearest rail level and distance marked on them plus any cant and platform height. Too modern for your layout. We used to place them every 15 metres but steam days would be around the 60 ft mark.
