Statistics 101: Variance and its Sampling Distribution

In this video, we begin to make inferences about variances. To begin I offer several short, real-world scenarios where variance becomes important in its own right. Next, we compare the sampling distribution of sample means to the sampling distribution of variances. This leads us to a new distribution; the chi-square distribution. We end by learning how to find critical values in the chi-square table. Enjoy!

Your teaching quality has low variance with a mean close to perfectness. Thank you!

Honestly, I was just about to drop out of my inferential statistics course and postpone it to next year (with the problem also being that i haven't even had my descriptive/ probability statistics exam due to corona) but these videos explain everything in such a structured and simple way that I finally get it- even with my mild dyscalculia! I felt so down for the last week and this actually makes me hopeful that I will be able to get good grades if I put enough effort into it. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much, I absolutely dreaded Statistics despite having survived a Stats class in University. This video really makes me believe that it may be fun to learn and actually easy. You are a great teacher, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Plan for the weekend: Watch the entire playlist of yours!

I always believed math and stat are more intuitive than are presented nowadays and I keep searching for the most intuitive until I find it. This video is one of such! Many thanks Brandon!!

Hello! Thank you for your comment. Yahoo Finance comparison graphs like the one used in the video are basically "% movement from the chosen start point." The start may not always be at zero if the stock gaps from the previous close. For this video the focus is merely on the swing of the percentages..the "band" of their trajectory. Hope that helps! All the best, B.

I am so very appreciative that you've made these videos. Thank you for explaining things in a straightforward manner and taking the time to lay out the fundamentals. Also thank you for starting every video with your acknowledgement that we are achieving, that people are proud of us and we should be proud of ourselves - I have found so much doubt in myself over my inability to comprehend statistics and am overly fearful that I will be unsuccessful in completing my university studies. I am genuinely grateful to have your videos to refer to, I find your explanations careful and easy to understand.

First of all, I would like to say - HUGE THANK YOU for all your work! I like your videos very much and they seem to be much more approachable than my lectures were. However, I struggle to understand where to begin... You see, with every video I watched there seems to be some before it, that I haven't seen and thus unfamiliar with some key concepts. I try to find those relevant videos and yet again half way through some previous videos are mentioned. Can you possibly give some guidance on where to begin, which videos are pre-requisites for which. In my particular case I am trying to learn about Multiple Regression analysis and Chi Square tests. Given that I have very little prior knowledge of statistics, which videos are a MUST SEE, and importantly, in which order, before I head on to your dedicated videos on the Chi and Multiple Regression?

What is the difference logically between standard deviation and variance if they both measure spread? Variance seems to be less useful since its units are squared. Can you please explain (I havent found a good video on RU-vid distinguishing this yet).

Thank you for this video!!! It helps a lot :) However, I have a doubt in min 15:45. No matter the distribution of the population ( normal, binomial or exponential, etc) the sampling distribution of the mean approximates a normal distribution. So the population distribution does not have to be a normal distribution.

Hi Brandon, thank you for doing these - your delivery style is really easy to follow. I have a couple of questions if thats OK? I have no stats background but just started my Ph.D (comparing different domestic violence programs in terms of their effectiveness). I've been told by some friends that maybe an ANOVA/MANOVA technique is the one to use (will learn this). Could I kindly seek your thoughts if you think this may be the best avenue (all good that its not concrete just pointing in right direction) Second question - Which one of your videos do you recommend to start with and work my way up to understand stats for my purpose? I greatly appreciate your advice! Dan

Would the distribution look the same if for example you plotted the sampling distribution of |s| instead of s^2? I'm trying to figure out in my head exactly why the distribution skews.

Thank you! I do not understand the MEANING of the curve of the sampling distribution of the variances. As I intuitively understand the curve and your lecture, the more observations you will have in each sample, the greater the difference will be between the samples in variance(because the greater the n is, the wider the curve will become). It feels weird. Shouldn't the more observation you will have in each sample make each sample more close to the studied population and hence both the means and variances from each sample would be more close to eachother? I do not study statistics, I am a happy amateur and newbie so I have probably managed to miss some basic thing...
