In this video we're listening to Staus Quid (Hee Bee Gee Bees). Clearly a spoof on Status Quo, we think this will be a funny take on that immensely popular band. Let's see what antics they're up to. Enjoy!

This was a parody song of Status Quo, (of course!) Performed by the, (Hee Bee Gee Bees), who were themselves a parody of the Bee Gees. The artist behind them was Philip Pope, and he was part of the cast for a BBC Radio 4 comedy sketch show called, 'Radio Active', (which was a fictitious radio station), that would feature one song per episode which was a parody of an artist that was popular at the time. This recording, plus a few others were featured on a BBC record that was released in 1982.

In early 1982, I heard "Too Depressed To Commit Suicide" by "The Pee Cees" (not a computer, kids) on the radio and I was in hysterics. The same guys.

The name alone was intriguing enough to make me check this out. 😂. Some real Spinal Taps vibes for sure.

The Moody Blues so loved The Dickies version of Nights In White Satin they used to soundcheck to the cover version & both Oasis & Pink Floyd championed covers of their hits Wonderwall & Comfortably Numb by Mike Flowers Pops & Scissor Sisters.

HeeBeeGeeBees released a very funny record that parodied the contemporary acts of the day. It was a fair call because they were only projecting what we were all thinking.

From memory, I think it was called something like "20 greatest Number #2's". I had a copy. Might still have it buried away with all my other old treasures somewhere.

@@ianeland2323 The Hee Bee Gee Bees also released an album called "Never Mind the Originals, Here's the Hee Bee Gee Bees". Their first song was as the Hee Bee Gee Bees, as Bee Gees parody called "Meaningless Song". Other parody's were, "Toyland Rhapsody" by Queer, "Dancing Up the Wall" by Jack Michaelson, "Purple Pants" by Ponce and "Quite Ahead of My Time" by David Bowwow.

I'm one of biggest STATUS QUO fans in the Universe and I think this parody is hilarious. It is overly exaggerated to make a point. Though they emulate the QUO sound perfectly. Ironically, the lyrics in QUO songs are far more interesting and complex than Status Quid portray in this parody. There is a reason that STATUS QUO were one of the most successful Rock Bands in the World and Status Quid just showed you all. STATUS QUO were a very exciting, fun Band. They had a wide range of styles and were very versatile. If you listen to their 33 albums, you'll hear what I mean. RIP - Rick Parfitt RIP - Alan Lancaster

Wow, I didn't actually expect you to do this. I'm super impressed. This & their Bee Gee's parody (Meaningless song in very high voices) were hits here in Aus.

When this came on Countdown it was like somebody finally understood how I (and probably many other kids in Australia) saw Status Quo. No disrespect to Quo or their fans, but this was 1982 and Quo songs were beginning to sound like ''Boring Song'' by then.

This is some of the best parody music you will ever hear. It's next level to Weird Al, because not only does it involve lyrical parody, it has original music as well - and the voice impressions are on the whole very accurate. The lyrics in Boring Song if you listen to them are having a dig at the extremely basic structure of Status Quo songs - and the ending makes it seem like the song is never going to end, boring you even more. :) The Hee Bee Gee Bees comprised three English actors/musicians/comedians. In the early 80s they released an album called 439 Golden Greats. As far as I know it only charted in Australia, it was very popular here. I've got a vinyl copy. It parodied various artists of the time - Status Quo, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, The Police, David Bowie (I remember he was called David Bowwow!) and others. It is simply brilliant. The clip you just watched is from Aussie music show Countdown, the "band" toured here. The band name is a take off of the Bee Gees - in this case, the Cribb Brothers, Garry, Norris & Dobbin. :) You really need to do a reaction to what I consider to be the outstanding track on the album - Meaningless Songs (In Very High Voices). No prizes for guessing who that is a parody of. There is a video of them performing it on (I think) TV in one of the Scandanavian countries.

'The Hee Bee Gee Bees' started out as a spoof of 'The Bee Gees' but then went into parodying other artists and bands, such as: "Drone Drone - Pretty Boys on Video", "Ponce - Purple Pants (Purple Pants)", "David Bowwow - Quite Ahead of My Time", "Human Leak - I Don't Want Your Baby", "Couture Club - Kiss and Make Up (That's What You Always Say)", "Gary Inhuman - Are Trains Electric", "Bruce Springbok - Bored in the USA", "Eddy Grunt - I Don't Wanna Smoke (Anymore Dope)", and, "The Hee Bee Gee Bees - Ah!". There are many more by this bsnd but these are fun ones to continue with.

I didn’t expect that. I got the Big No. 2s album one Christmas. My sister had their first album. I remember their send up of Billy Idol - Song Without a Tune; Queen Bohemian Rhapsody parody about Noddy and Big Ears and Duran Duran - Pretty Boys on Video. Two of the Hee Bee Gee Bees were Angus Deayton who worked with Rowan Atkinson and Phillip Pope from Who Dares Wins… I forget the other bloke’s name.

Philip Pope has a long and successful career as a composer for film and tv by now. This absolutely nails the kind of chord changes and structure that were typical of Quo, which funnily enough actually stops it being boring.

This is a short version. They didn't sing "the second bit, second bit, the first bit we got sick of it, so we wrote a second bit...." The David Bow-wow song was great, as was the grand finale, Bird Of Paradise, has Bob Villain and the Bland, as well as many other great rip offs, finishing with the Heebee Geebees. If you like this sort of humour, check out The Baron Knights doing The Topical Song (a rip off of Supertramp's The Logical Song.

People have already told you about Philip Pope doing songs for Radio Active, but it's worth knowing that he was also the musical director for the TV show Spitting Image and there were several albums of songs from that too. The Spitting Image songs tend to be more about parodying celebrities than actually sending up music acts, though the Black Lace spoof "The Chicken Song" was a big hit single in its own right.

@@ghichens3418 Hi Graham. I had spoken about my time on Countdown many times. I was on almost every show because my sister and I lived close by. We attended this Hee Bee Gee Bees performance, and did the usual thing that was required: scream and wave our arms about. But we were laughing as soon as ''Status Quid'' was announced and knew immediately that we were in for a Status Quo spoof. It was welcomed because most of us hated Status Quo. 😆

@@ghichens3418 My husband liked Status Quo in the mid 70's, and he tried to get me to take a serious listen to ''Blue For You'' and other 'classic' Quo albums. But he gave up after seeing my sad pouty face. Maybe I should have been matured about it. Wish I could have some of that sunshine you're experiencing. It's been drab and grey down here in Melbourne. My sister and I are in ''Robert Palmer - Bad Case Of Loving You - Countdown Australia 1979''. My sister is trying teaching me how to dance while Mr Palmer is singing his song. One of my favourite vids. Enjoy your hotter days!!! Pups.. 🐕

I just noticed the space between the kid audience and the stage. I knew a guy that was in a band that had to do Countdown, and he had the misfortune of playing guitar close to the edge of the stage. Those kids did more than just untie shoelaces.

''Meaningless SONGS in very high voices.. and a little scream.. Ah!'' I remember these guys. They were doing the TV and radio tour of Australia. But what's confused me is seeing Rock Arena on your screen, but getting a Countdown performance. Rock Arena was a show on the ABC (home of Countdown) and was for more serious listeners... like you Chris. If you were raised in Australia, you would have been a Rock Arena boy. No offense, but you don't seem very Countdownish. Anyway, cheekiness aside.. I'm actually curious about your collective memory. Back in the early 80's I was assigned to work on a TV commercial for Brut 33, and this TV commercial was distributed internationally (esp. Canada). So, do you guys remember this Brut 33 commercial? It's one of my early film gigs... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1tI5VuiGt_I.html

Quo was fair game because they were still on top of the world , but I felt sorry for The Bee Gees for being the target of ''Meaningless Songs''. I I knew The Bee Gees had recorded timeless classics just four years prior, but everybody by then wanted to forget about them and ''Meaningless Songs'' was like kicking them while they were down.
