I'm the same age and grew up with that as well! We didn't have soda unless it was Christmas or Easter feast or birthday but I never learned to like it. A lot of my classmates had Soda streams at home. I was allowed candy once a week that I bought from my weekly pocket money so I had about 1.5 dl candy on Saturdays and thought it was a lot but prioritized to buy comic papers and things. But I think mom was concerned about dental health.

Dr. HYMAN is a nonstop health information overload monster! He crushes blissful ignorance and puts everyone on notice. The American diet is mostly processed, refined, adulterated, and void of life giving properties. The fruits and vegetables here taste like water since our soil is dead. In other countries like Israel, Greece, and Portugal the intensity of their produce and the good effects of eating it are almost immediately noticeable. I can't be entirely fanatical, but thanks for the simple and amazing takeaways. It's so fantastic how our Creator put so many healing and rejuvenating properties within such a diverse array of foods.

There is no scientific medical evidence that proves eating certain foods and supplements prevents disease. Nothing in life stays young forever . Oxygenation destroys everything in a specified time frame, such as rust on metal. Skin and internal organ fail over time. OBESITY AND LACK OF SERIOUS EXERCISE DAILY, KILL HUMANS PREMATURELY . This reminds me so much of the oxycontin epidemic. It started as a miracle drug for people with chronic pain. As a nursing student in the 90's, we were literally told to push pain medication. "Don't let the pain get ahead of you", which means take BEFORE you even need it. They also told us to tell the patients that there was very low risk of addiction. Meanwhile the pharmaceutical companies knew the whole time! Im sure any nurse practicing at that time knows exactly what I mean

There are many people that are doing research in the field, but Dr Hyman's strongsuit is being able to digest an incredible amount of information , understanding it and how it connects to the overall "picture". He is able then communicate his love and enthusiasm for what he does, and share it in a very understandable way to the great benefit of everyone else. That being said -your obvious knowledge and ability to "guide" the conversation is skillful and key to getting a good interview. THANK YOU!

The best thing you can do to stay young and healthy is some extended fasting! Some benefits of doing occasional extended fasting: High blood pressure is lowered to normal levels very quickly while fasting. Fasting restores NAD+ to healthy levels. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria, plaques and viruses by the immune system. It will also remove any 'foreign material' like spikes that are not supposed to be there. Whether natural or unnatural in origin.. Fibrosis/scarring is reversed over time. Fasting increases nitric oxide release. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Reflexes and short term memory are increased. Fasts from 36-96 h increase metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release! After 72 hours or more fasted, your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune bodies, rejuvenating your entire immune system. This helps prevent the onset of new autoimmune conditions, which develop through a leaky gut and damaged immune system. Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures. Thymus is regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. The thymus also plays a vital role in fighting cancer. Blood sugar and insulin are lowered when fasting, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue! The obese will lose extra tissue like loose skin while fasting, but the skinny or frail will have increased growth hormone release than the obese, which helps to make more lean tissue and reduce frailness. The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting. When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell required for viruses to replicate. What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting. Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building. Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility, especially in women with PCOS. Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system in a similar way to CBD oil. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance, which impairs immune function. One day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! Stomach acid is reduced over time while fasting and can allow for the healing of treatment resistant ulcers. Some patients may need continued acid reduction medication while fasting. Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No. Except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns fats in the form of free fatty acids. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose. Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism, fighting infection and cancer prevention! Fasting releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth. This can help a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn carbohydrate, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer. A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row also provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and extremely low carbs. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness or tremors, then simply break the fast and seek advice. A portion of endorsing high fructose corn syrup use started in the niineties. I will never forget when, at only a minmal upcharge, McDonalds started super sizing their soda drinks so that the equivalent of 7 Eleven's Big Gulp, (32 oucces). became their new large drink. Then other fast food competitiors followed suit. In contrast, if you look at the originial size bottled drinks from the 1920s, they were only 7 ounces, close to the equivalent of what dispense from your bladder every time you urinate. 32 ounces is a 5 time increase.

Babies are good evidence of why people don't like fruits and vegetables....if you give a baby a fresh sweet strawberry, they will like it and want more. If you have good broccoli cooked properly, you don't need any cheese, salt or butter, to get a baby to eat it. They won't eat it like it's candy, but they will eat it. So the reason people don't like fruits and vegetables is because of quality and how it's prepared, and of course, what it's eaten next to. If you have a sugar pasta sauce on top of spaghetti with cheese, the broccoli will be a bit boring or bland. If you have it with salmon and salad, nothing is overtaking the other. It all tastes good.

I just caught your video. I’m right in the middle of the same thing. Our scenarios are very similar. I had no idea. Only symptom I had was fatigue but also worked 70 hours a week. So being tired comes with the territory. Forced health insurance changes let me know I was iron deficiency but after a few months of supplements I was told I was fine. ‘19-‘20. Stop the supplements and if you notice any changes to come back. Few years go by change careers, get way better insurance, turn 40, get a primary care doctor, inform him that at the end of 2019 I was iron deficient took supplements for a few months then told I was fine. Thought it would be a good idea just to check and make sure. Iron is bottomed out, and we start to investigate. This August the tumor was found at the beginning of the month, and found two spots on the liver at the end of the month. Had all the surgeries scheduled and then canceled and a port put in, and this week is round 2 of basically the same treatment. Same cocktail, different regiment. 6 hours in the chair, 48 hours with the infusion ball. My CEA is above 20, and has been over 30. Like you I’m trusting the process, trusting the doctors are suggesting the best options as we progress. Wishing you the best outcome!

The doctor that I believe in more than all the others is Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. He was President Clinton’s heart disease doctor. He was a Director and surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic. For decades, he was who you went to see when all other cardiologists gave up on you. The patients were all close to death and those who followed his diet lived for many years, even decades. He is famous for saying that heart disease, our number 1 killer, is a food born illness and completely preventable.

Dhru: Would love a round table discussion with Drs. Hyman, Chaffee, Baker, Berry. They all seem to be in agreement about meat (although not the amount) but vary widely about vegetables, fruit, and supplements. This vast difference in diet recommendations, from these medical doctors and their own doctors, is why some/many people are confused about what to eat and some just give up out of frustration.

It is 100% a problem of *awareness,* I grew up in a single parent household with kool aid soda & tons of carbs, once i left home.... I found out how to be healty & started eating differently, my family *guilted & shamed* me & would always try to make me over eat when I came home & my family is only overweight not even obese, but I've seen the obese in these small towns, rural communities & many of them think the same.... Mom still always has the candy dishes out & still drinks her pepsi.... But at least I finally got her & her husband to *respect my food choices* when i visit, but *they refuse to eat healthy* or take my advice, they see me as *a sucker* for "believing in organic" foods! 🙃.... Yeah people are *very misinformed,* most people think our food is the same food as it was in the 1950's *It's NOT!*

I find this so tragic, but a very common story. My father started eating organic and healthy around twenty years ago (he turns 82 next week), and today he insists he has easily another 20 years on this earth and I believe him. Growing up we ate a lot of tv dinners at home and garbage school lunches, but I always rode my bike everywhere and pilfered fresh fruits from all the neighboring yards. I would simply stuff myself with these glorious gifts of nature and I truly believe that is why I am still in such good health and still look easily twenty years younger than my 60 year old self.

I hear you guys talking about all these special injections and supplements and sourcing exotic grains from far away and it’s just so expensive sounding and so complicated. With all the anecdotal evidence out there about the carnivore diet why isn’t it being given the attention that these rare exotic foods are being given? I don’t even care about living longer, I do care about staying healthy and functional for as long as I do live. So heads up world. I’m 58 and I get trying to blame everything on food, but my struggles began at 30 years old. I was active and did not eat poorly. My A1C started rising and I gained weight literally for no reason. My doctor put me on metformin and my journey to restricting began. No white flour, no corn, no white rice, increase protein, moderate carbs, low fats. My A1C although remained at 5.9 it was never low. My life has been a struggle with weight up/down, with me constantly watching what I eat, because one meal would cause immediate weight gain and inflammation. Finally learned about low carb, now Keto in 2016. That helped but once menopause set in it wasn’t enough so I restricted even more. A1C began increasing and I started gaining weight for no reason. My doctor put me on mounjaro last year and says that I have genetic insulin resistance. Been seeing the same doctor. I get that these drugs are new, but why don’t we talk about genetic insulin resistance and what it means and it’s impact on those of us who’s bodies don’t creat the proper hormones to digest foods properly. So nearly my entire life my body treated everything like sugar, no matter who good or restrictive my eating habits were. People aren’t the same and until we start treating them like that we won’t see significant improvements across all people. We need to stop shaming obese or overweight people and blaming it all on food, when most likely genetics are the most likely culprit. My doctor knew that my GDad had type two diabetes and my father developed it in his 40’s. My father like me didn’t eat poorly. He’s now 79, and on insulin. He eats well, very restrictive yet can’t get off insulin. I honestly believe if we’d been diagnosed with insulin resistance early on our lives would’ve been different. I guess we were born at the wrong time. I guess our grand and great grandchildren will fair better.

I think Mark did answer the question about whether the major risk for obesity is genetic or not. He gave a nuanced answer- there is some genetic vulnerability to gain weight, but only to about 22 lbs. It does not account for people needing to lose 50 to 100 lbs. We can't change genetically in 50 years. It's all the things Mark mentions but a huge components ultraprocessed foods that are designed to make you come back for more. The food industry takes advantage of the biological drive to eat more of sweet foods so you have enough body fat to survive a period of food shortage ( like winter).
