A million thanks for explaining not only how to stay stitch, but why this preparation stage in garment making is so important. I quilt and make handbags and totes. I’m attempting my first simple summer dress. Pattern is cut out, markings are made and I’m petrified about the next step…stay stitching. Thanks to your video and masterful instruction, I’m ready to proceed. Heartfelt thanks!🌺
jandipeach don’t feel bad 😞 I have been sewing 🧵 for 65 years never even though of this or even heard about this live and learn I guess lol happy 😃 sewing 🧵
I’m new to sewing and I have watched a lot of videos and you are the best instructor…THANK You! You explained stay stitching at a beginner’s level, that I now feel confident to start my first project. You showed me HOW to do stay stitching and explained WHY to do it. If you wrote a book about sewing I certainly would buy it. I bought a stack of how to sew books and nobody has taught me better than you did!!!
Nobody has ever explained this better. I had two teachers in NYC who said, "It doesn't matter which direction you stitch!" "Why would anyone ask such a question?" Incompetent and Nasty! Darryl cracked the code!
Wow, I have watched a lot of sewing videos and no one has ever explained Directional Stitching and why it is done in it this way. Finally, a good sewing teacher. I'm definitely subscribing!!
WOW 🤩 you are my new sewing HERO!!! I am a self taught sewist and your explanation of stay stitching is by far .... off the charts!!! I am instantly a fan! ✅✂️❤️
I've been taking courses at my local J.C., and with very good professors, but they never taught this decisive detail, just that we 'should' staystitch, but no directions on how, even when one class did weaving! I really need to buy this subscription!
What a useful tutorial - I wish someone had explained this to me when I started sewing in my teens. It’s funny how all the most useful facts and tips seem self-evident once you’ve been told them, but we never managed to work them out for ourselves!
This is a fantastic lesson. My mother was a professional dressmaker, and I can remember her staystiching, and basting everything before she sewed. Pins never went near her machine.
I’ve not seen this explained in any book I’ve read on sewing. Really important and basic information. I’ve been sewing for decades. Proves once again what I find so satisfying about sewing: you will always learn something new. Thank you very much!
I learned this in home ec back in the late 60s. Our sewing teacher was a cranky old lady, but boy did she know what she was doing and I really appreciate how much I learned from her.
Hi from England. I have been sewing for years and have at various times, read that to sew in specific directions is important but I have never understood why so, obviously, I have not done as I should. Now that it has been explained so well I will staystitch and sew in the correct direction. Thank you for doing these videos.
This was so incredibly helpful! Most importantly because you explained "why!" Then made it understandable. I feel like I can sew with more confidence. Thank You!
Wow in less than 15 minutes I learned more about good sewing habits than I have in my lifetime (have been sewing for 50+ years) Thank you for such concise explanation.😮😊
Thank you for a truly excellent tutorial. I have never seen such a terrific explanation of why staystitching is important. I really appreciated being able to learn from Ms. Lancaster.
I recently made an outfit and was instructed to start at the bottom. I was like what? Now I understand why. And yes this had happened to me where my fabric would move and change. Thanks for this.
This blew my mind! There were elements to the math and physics behind warp and weave that I never thought of... There's so much more than just knowing where the bias is
I am a beginner, and always heard of staystitching, but thought, it could not be very important. Now I have learned why it is important, before I messed up. Thank you so much.
I’m a total novice, I have cut my pattern out, and I’m scared lol, the pattern says to stay stitch... I have found this video and saved it, even I understand! Hallelujah!! Thank you, your explanation is awesome.
OMG! This explains **so much**! Just, wow. There have been so many times when I thought I was losing my mind. I couldn't figure out how I kept cutting my pieces incorrectly. I was just sewing them all wrong. I will be stay stitching everything and sewing in the correct direction from now on. Thank you X 1,000,000!
Thanks for doing this video. I have been sewing for several years using RU-vid videos as a guide but have never come across anyone explaining this most fundamental concept. Sewing seams in the right direction is definitely going to improve my finished garments. Thanks again. X
I truly enjoyed your video on stay stitching. I've been sewing for 52 years and never knew any of what you just explained. I'm teaching my twin grandsons who are 21 how to sew and I will definitely pass on that information. thank you so much for thinking of even presenting this to us! be well
This video was very informative, I knew it was important to stay stitch to stop stretching but was never told how to do it and how important it truly is. I will always stay stitch now. Thank you, Cindy
Been sewing since the 60's, stay stitch necklines and shoulders but now realize that isn't always enough. And no one ever said anything about directional stitching. You explained the whats and whys so well. Thank you!!
I'm picking up sewing after being intimidated by it for years. And of course I pick a ballgown to start with! 🤦This tutorial is a huge help, though. It gave me a ton of wonderful information that I know I'm really going to need for this project and presented it in a direct, easily accessible format. Thank you!
I am new to sewing. I have looked at several of the videos on stay stitching, and none of them have explained this as well as your video. Thanks for not only showing how, but also explaining why. Too many instructors do not seem to understand that the viewer wants to know the reason for doing something.
Great video. I've been sewing over 50 years. It's never too late to learn something new. And knowing the reasoning behind a technique, helps to promote attention to detail. And that makes all the difference in garment construction. Thanks
I even staystitched ALL edges. Learned this in the 1960s and still do this. Straightening the fabric was the hardest when double or stretch knits came into fashion. Clothing I made then have kept their shape even today in 2020. Excellent lesson.
This really does make sense to me. So often I see fabric move when I’m sewing it. I hope you will be able to do another video on armholes and darts. Darts would be easy sewing widest to narrowest but armholes look as though the bottom half should be sewn up and the upper part sewn down to meet the earlier stitching. I’ll try it and see what happens. Thank you so much for teaching this.
Great explanation. I think next pattern I sew I will use a yellow highlighter to mark the stay stitching on the paper pattern with directional arrows showing which direction I should stay stitch to make it easier to keep track. I can just refer to the pattern each time I need to stay stitch. Thank you so much.
Just about to sew my first blouse and I’m so glad I’ve run across your video! Even as someone who’s not used to sewing this makes perfect sense and is going to prevent so many problems going forward!
Wow! Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have recently returned to sewing and would love to make my own clothes/upcycle existing garments. At first it was hard to understand but eventually got the gist of it. I have saved your tutorial to watch again...and again 🙂👍
I do stay stitching only at necklines. Even so never do ike this ot never knew logic behind it with this much details. when I saw this vedio I was like " stay stitching for 14 mts.? What do you have to talk that much about staystitching for 14 mts?" Clicked out of curiosity and never regretting doing that. So glad I watched this. Amazing teacher she is
Excellent tutorial! Thanks❤ Should put the very final cut, describing petting your cat at the very beginning! With the fabric triangle visuals, that's when I finally understood🐈why wide to narrow was so critical🤗
Thank you so much for explaining all this. I started sewing last year, with no formal lessons, just the pattern guidelines/instructions. staystitching wasn't mentioned, as far as i remember, and i did distort at least 1 garment i made. i didn't know why. now i do and i'll know better in the future. i did see garments with staystitches and i was wondering why they stitched a single layer of fabric. i thought it was done to prevent fraying, but i guess it was done more to prevent distortion. i believe that many home-made clothes look cheap because of several reasons: not ironing the seams, not topstitching some of the seam, and even, not staystitching, or not stitching in the correct direction at least.
Thank you for this very important video. I was wondering why the actual arm hole on the pattern was not discussed. You showed the stay stitching but did not discuss how you would actually sew it. It looks maybe from the bottom of the arm hole opening to the top of the shoulder.
