Stealth Camping Under a Tree 🥶 Below Freezing -6°C

A lil stealth camp under a tree in -6ºC. This wasn’t what I’d originally planned to do, but there were too many people about for a tarp camp out in the open. The tree provided a nice bit of cover and also kept me a lot warmer - with about 3ºC difference between the temperature under the tree and outside it 😮

A great little tip I learnt in the Royal Marine Commandos, at night before you go bed, heat up a load of water, put it back in your water bottle, drop it in bottom of your sleeping bag to keep your toes warm, and when you use it in the morning you use less fuel to reheat it to cook with.

Only just discovered your channel a few days ago and already watched most of the films. Makes a refreshing change from the normal beardy blokes and expensive kit to find someone more realistic and relatable showing that things don’t always go to plan, and you don’t always need the most expensive kit to get out there and enjoy time in nature. Looking forward to your next films and wish you the best for all your future adventures.

Yes, good comments... I get a bit sick, or tired, as a man, watching other men doing wild camps. Nice to have a feminine touch , without a beard obviously..I HOPE SHE TAKES CARE. (I ONCE DID A WILD CAMP IN A SMALL TENT & IT WAS MINUS 10 or thereabouts, but I only had a couple of t-shirts & jeans on, & not a very thick s.bag. I made sure plenty of insulation under me.

Exactly my thougts! These serious bushcraft guys are too often focused on a gear and expensive stuff. It looks like these fancy things are more important for them than camping itself. Try using a wide mouth 1 litre Nalgene as a hot water bottle. I fill it with just off the boil hot water and wrap with any item of clothing to avoid scalding my feet. By morning it’s still lukewarm and speeds up making yourself a hot drink. I just walked the Coleridge Way, 52 miles, and had awful weather - torrential rain, sleet, high winds etc and it feels amazing to get under my quilt with my hot water bottle.

Honest reply and considerate. Nice people need protection too. I pull or push to see what answers such prompting . Why else to land a catch ? One explanation concerns my crafting hobby. I learned in Micronesia of previous cultures that had no metal. End result is a stone-hard shiny orb. Braided human hair has it on display in ritual usage to appease man-eaters. To go there the first thing I do is bait a shark hook with dead flesh usually collected from tar surfaces where vehicles speed.. How hard could it be to reproduce a stone age task methodology ?

On my first bivi camp, I learnt a valuable lesson. I was in a group of six camping in the Lake District in winter. At night my friend and I lay under conifers where we woke up warm and dry. The rest of the group decided to lay out in the open. In the morning they found themselves in a dew-sodden patch. They had a miserable time making breakfast on the damp and cold grass.

Lovely video! Yes, trees and bushes can keep you warm. My late father used to say that the forest is the poor mans overcoat. He loved stealth camping and bushcraft, especially when he was young. I remember one of his stories about sleeping under a spruce in winter and waking up totally covered in snow. The little tree you are camping under in this video seems to be some species of hemlock-spruce.

Ahh that's a lovely phrase, they really can make quite a difference 🌲 I've always found it amazing how much more sheltered and warm a forest is than out on moors or mountains, which is obvious I suppose. But it fascinates me even more how I can sleep in a lil microclimate under a tree that's considerably warmer than the air just a few feet away That sounds amazing to sleep under a spruce and wake up to snow 😍 thank you for the species info, it was a lovely lil tree. Hard boiled eggs with the shells still on make for great handwarmers or to warm up your sleeping bag ....double wrapped roasted potatoes also are good to keep your sleeping bag marm and both eggs and potatoes can be eaten when they've cooled down and that will keep your inner self nice and warm processing the food in your tummy

years ago on a training mission, the weather turned by very quickly, there was no time to get a shelter. I saw 2 huge pine trees maybe 20 plus feet across. As the leader I hustled us over to them and set up like u did. great video

I made use of a pine tree as an emergency shelter but it was summer and I got turned around because of fog. I put down some brows and slept pretty good. The next morning the fog lifted and I was able to get my bearings. Claire you are a hard case Camper and I think you Are Super Giirl. Keep having fun and making videos. Luv ya and remember Nature is Gods Handiwork.

Should try camping in Portugal in the middle of summer. 😉 You can't make fire because of the wild fires, but you barely need anything to keep warm. Perhaps just bug protection.

A quick comment, unrelated to this video. I just rewatched (DAY 3 | Three Nights Alone In The Rhinog Mountains). How very cool to see someone so connected to nature and just how emotional it can be. Your closing in that video shows many of us what we all hope to feel but just haven't gotten there yet.

Hello! Ahh thanks so much, that was my first multi-night trip and I was a bit overwhelmed by it all, I don't think I really believed I could do it but it was one of the best experiences of my life. And the start of a love affair with getting lost in the wild places (hopefully not literally lost haha!)

@@WildBeare Funny, that is a lesson I have been trying to impress upon my sons. Try something you are challenged with and experience what it means to succeed. They are resistant but I am resilient. LOL

I don’t know where you are but I’ve spent time under Hemlock trees in New England that were so large and spread out that there was an area beneath them that could accommodate several people with the lower branches brushing the ground. It was definitely a micro climate.

Such a fun looking lil' overnighter Claire! A bit chilly for sure, but incredibly beautiful with all of that frost covering everything in the morning 😍 It was pretty cool to see how much added warmth that tree provided you as well. Thanks for sharing another fun and unique adventure! I hope that you have an absolutely amazing weekend my friend! :) Stay wild.... 🐻 -John

I've been going out in Connecticut and Massachusetts to winter hike at primitive sites for a years and wanting to find a spot near home. You're inspiring to go out to the dog park, which has miles of trails.

Great video, a great piece of advice from a Finnish friend is he always drapes a microfiber towel over his face when he sleeps outdoors which I've done since, just stops the cold air dropping onto your face.

6:26 Giving us the cold shoulder huh hahaha, You really are a lovely lady, not only in looks but in demeanor also, there really is nothing like getting back to basics and sleeping under a Big old spruce tree on a cool frosty night, aside from the risks of ticks, of course, haha no pain no gain huh. Even here in Canada, it is also starting to be harder to find a little spot closer to home for an evening getaway camping, without people and their dogs walking about in the local forest.
