Whether you're working a job or just passing through a major city, it can be stressful to know where to park and how to not attract to much attention. As long as you know what to look out for it can be a fun and enjoyable experience. In this video I give you 5 tips that I've learned living out of my mini camper van while working a full-time job in the city. These tips can be useful if you're living out of your car or SUV.
1. Find a safe place to sleep.
2. Timing and mobility.
3. Stealth
4. Where to cook.
5. Remain positive!
I hope this video has encouraged you to remain optimistic about living out of your vehicle. It can be a very liberating experience as well as give you a leg up on your finances, even if it's just for a season.

Once upon a time, a van dweller who stealth camped in the hotel parking lot decided to go to the front desk the next morning to see if he could find out if he was near a laundry mat. The front desk clerk showed him where one was onsite, along with the free continental breakfast.

Hi Steve. Thanks for these tips. I agree with having some sort of idea or plan for things to do. Nature trails, libraries, parks. And in small towns they might have free concerts on the main square or theater productions. During the day in suburbs there might be areas to walk and window shop for fun. And outdoor malls. Farmer's markets can be delightful on a mild sunny day. I also am a firm believer in trusting one's intuition and gut instints. If you feel uneasy, move on. If it's raining have some puzzle books, adult coloring books n pencils or markers, hobby items, and it's a good time to catch up a journal, etc.

Awesome tips Cheryl. I'm a big fan of parks and libraries, reading, writing, listening to music :) And I hadn't even thought about mentioning farmer's markets and festivals. I'm not totally anti-city. But if I'm going to be in the city for a while it sure helps to have fun and interesting things to do instead of mindlessly driving around. And yea, those raining days are meant for adult coloring books and hot chocolate :)

Hi Steve!! Very nice having you here and sharing these Tips with us !! I am in progress to build our Econoline out as our Future Home and I think the Tips you give here are very much appreciated from those who really need to stay close to their Jobs , and it can help a lot to figure things out before you need to find Places to stay and to sleep or rest !! The big parking areas like Walmart are still good to certain point , but if a Security is driving around ,you just have to be careful without making yourself to visible.. lol.. Hotels and Hospitals are really a good advice and working just fine !! I think there are plenty of Areas left where we can park , but we need to make sure we leave our Areas always clean when we leave !! The Big Semi trailer Gas stations are also very nice to be safe and you can take a shower there for 1$ 50 cents whenever you need it..some Truckdrivers don't like us to take their Space, but being there early enough let you take a smaller Space somewhere away from them and doesn't bother that way !! Thanks for your Tips and tricks.. lol.. and always be safe !! 👍🤗😎

Hi Gabriela! You're welcome, and it seems like you've been doing this for a little while so I'm sure you have tricks up your sleeve :) Walmarts can be good if you're in a pinch and in a unfamiliar area, but I don't usually like staying there because there's usually a lot of traffic people wise. I haven't stayed overnight or showered at the semi truck stations. I've heard great things though, the showers being one of them, and the space and comfort of knowing that others are sleeping overnight. That's the big one for me, just feeling comfortable sleeping overnight. I hate feeling like I'm hiding from the public, but in certain areas I am ;) I couldn't agree more about cleaning up after ourselves! I enjoyed reading your comment - Safe travels to you and happy trails!

@@themoodyvids Thank you Steve, I was just out for some time as a Truck Driver, therefore I do love those Areas where you won't be bothered !!,Hiding from the Public..hahaha..jeahhh sometimes it is all you can do when they are getting to close or making your business to theirs.. 😂..Anyhow, I wish you always a good and safe Time...and one more thing to add here, I always liked Areas close to Rail ways , where they have many Spots you can park without being bothered...if you don't mind their drive-by once or so in the Night..Thanks for your replay and enjoy your Time being FREE like a Bird and with less costing Responsibilities!!..I will catch up on you !!👍🙂🙏😊😎

I know this tip is for more traveling but a friend of mine used to live out of his pickup truck and would park in the national forest campgrounds for free. All he had to do was move every 14 days even just one camp site over. Rules might have changed since then. 😁 happy travels
@themoodyvids
@themoodyvids 2 года назад
I think the rules are pretty much the same, depending on location. I've heard 10-14 days in national forests and BLM land. And honestly, if I wasn't working a job at the moment, I'd be doing exactly what your buddy did. I have in the past, and come August I'll be on the road going to Cali and over to Yellowstone staying on public land :)

Even just walking around stores to get ac on you. It also is good walking exercise. I have a fit bit so I can check how many miles I walk a day. The most has been over 7 miles in a day. Just walking around stores.

@themoodyvids 2 года назад
Oh yea, having the option to walk around stores for the ac alone is wonderful. Idk where you live, but I live in CO at the moment. So it hasn't been that bad. The mountain air keeps things cool. I can't imagine being down south right now.

I was going to attempt to camp in the car over the weekend at dispersed camp site, but I bailed. It was way too foggy for my liking. But one thing that always came to my mind is finding restroom when I need to go. There might be porta potties, but those are not always the most welcoming.

Thank you for the encouragement, Steve. I am also considering converting to a semi nom@dic transition very soon. I’m only about 20 minutes South of the location you show here and although I’ve gone through CR via I25 many times over the last six years, I didn’t realize that there was open space there that would be friendly. I encourage you to look at some other RV lifestyle channels and expand your offering. As a woman alone, I’m going to be very interested in safety, staying warm, and super-stealth. Also, I am going to want to maximize my quality of life by looking for educational opportunities, figuring out how to stay connected, like via satellite, even finding communities of very mellow people who also are seeking a kinder gentler lifestyle. Peace to you, brother!

Great tips! I’m trying to be brave and be stealth but not there yet. I have a RAV4 and have a great set up but so far all I have done is camp in national parks. When I bought my RAV4 I bought it as plain as I could (plain silver color , stock wheel covers) so to be as invisible as possible. One thing I would like to add, to the stickers idea is have “no license plate frame” no cute sayings, or favorite sports teams, and no dealer name or what city you got the car.
@themoodyvids
@themoodyvids 2 года назад
That’s a good thought Rick. I actually still have a dealership marker on the back end of my van I should remove now that you mention it. Anything to help the chances of not attracting attention. Honestly I’d be doing exactly that, going to national parks or national forests, if I wasn’t working for the next month. But it’s been good to work out the kinks of staying in the city, and what works for me. It takes some getting used to for sure.

A Big Lots store close by has over 12 semi trucks and trailers in there big parking lot the last few months. All are not running just shut down engines I think because of the high diesel prices.
