Just keep in mind the 512 he got to durability test was given to him the one he is giving away and the other one are likely not 512gb models and he probably only paid for 1 of the 3. I just wish they would have sent him a broken one to put through durability testing vs one that could have been sent to a buyer.
@Carl Gunderson lots of reports of different rma issues all it needs is a good screen for him to test if it has fan defects or bad analog sticks or bad WiFi as have been reported it would not really affect the durability testing while at the same time not take a fully working 512gb out of circulation. Instead he wrecks the top end model which is the one in most demand. He could have just as easily performed all those tests on a 64gb model too. Except the frosted glass...
@@bryannichelson2 no you can't it is 1 per account he has 1 for give away one for testing imho did not need be the 512gb he could have done the lesser model that was for giveaway. He can still redeem himself put the 512gb in the giveaway deck
Exactly. I preordered and don't get mine until july and he is damaging one... just feels wrong. Why ruin a product so many want but cant even get for months even with a preorder. I get it it's for science and helps others see if they want one and which screen is best but damn, I would have at least taken care of mine and not scratched, burned, and tried to break it in half steam. Why can't i have mine already?
For reference the Nintendo Switch has anywhere between 291 to 380 nits brightness depending on the model. Complaining about the steam deck's 400 should be more of a criticism of hand-held gaming devices' peak brightness as whole, rather than a device specific thing.
I've had the 512 in hand for a few weeks now. It is not very bright in full sunlight. Crazy that you can play AAA titles to 60fps, and still start at 12 watts or so for the entire thing.
@@Chocho5983 This makes no sense, there is NO way that they could launch this at just $400 with an aluminum construction. a lot of $400 smartphones dont even use full metal or glass construction.
I've never watched videos like this before, and so I've never seen fire's effect on a screen like that. I wasn't expecting the black to fade away, even if there's still a noticeable splotch of differently-colored pixels in that spot. That's wild.
Agent 47 before: *Assassinated people, infiltrated complexes, got paid in huge number* Agent 47 now: *Assassinates electronic devices, infiltrates their insides and gets paid by sponsorship* Also, he has a wife now.
Oh wow, I can't tell you how much scratching up the steam deck goes against every preservation instinct I have. This is like the ultimate in "aaaaaaargh what's he doing! nooooooooooo!" I can't believe how in depth you went with this, excellent job thank you! Now I know without doubt, not to let anyone with a knife near my steam deck... when I can get one :D
Man as someone still waiting for his Deck to arrive it was painful to watch the scratch tests! Btw there will surely be some shell replacements in the future, and screen replacement (and possible upgrade) are the most likely the first to arrive, so the scratched SD have a chance to be restored to its former glory (or better)!
As someone who got it day one and babied it knowing thousands were waiting, it was almost unbearable. The trackpad scratch especially hurt given I use that one more than the stick.
It's so fucking wasteful. This whole video is pointless. It's not a $1200 phone advertising drop or scratch resistance--we're well aware it's made with very basic plastic and a normal screen since Valve have been very clear about keeping cost and weight down. If you're worried about the screen in a device like this, get a cover. That's it. We don't need a video showing complete destruction of a hard-to-get device right now, especially when there's global shortages.
@@J3RZ_ because it gets views and it also gets a bit of insight. I am also waiting for my Deck and had a hard time watching this video. BUT, I appreciate now that I will know how sturdy (or not) my device will be and I will be able to take proper care of it.
"I'm pretty sure though that nobody has played with their deck the same way I'm about to play with mine." I will never be mature enough to not laugh at that.
@@Ethan_Alexandur Yeah I'd definitely recommend it. Alongside buying a 1TB SD card for the Deck cause whether it's 64, 256 or even 512GB, you're gonna need more space
Thank you for this. I accidentally sat on my SD for a split second and even tho everything was functioning fine, I was freaking out that I had broken it somehow. After seeing this, I realize it's totally fine and I had absolutely nothing to worry about. There's no way I bent it as much as you did lmao
The more I see about the Steamdeck, the more it really blows any other handheld out of the water. Cost for performance is nuts, and once FSR2 is a little more widespread it’ll really be a crazy lil beast.
@@97JoMiller Initially there were issues with epic games anti cheat, but it seems like that have been fixed and is now supported. The only thing it can't do is get sold in stores everywhere, since no one can buy them at the moment.
My real worry is the CPU, i've seen someone hook up a desktop gpu to it and it struggles to get over 60 fps due to the cpu only being a 4 core. It's fine for 30 fps but i really would like 40 minimum.
@@97JoMiller Oh no, the Steam Deck is a complete PC on it's own. I've just seen a video of a guy who hooked a full sized GPU to the steam deck, it's impractical but the fact you can do it shows how open source valve has made the device.
Making the screen brighter would mean more battery consumption. While the effectiveness of the anti glare coating can be disputed, it's a passive way to increase visibility without compromising battery life.
@@StrawberryKitten Usually when you want to be able to see a screen in an area with a lot of ambient light, like outside, you need to increase your screen brightness which drains battery a lot more. Having the anti-glare helps alleviate that a bit by reducing the blinding effect that external lights have on your screen so you don't have to turn up the brightness quite as much.
Unlike most modern devices that JerryRig destroys, at least the Steam Deck is actually repairable - pretty much everything he does to it here could be fixed. This one still brought a tear to my eye though.
My toes curled and I grit my teeth as the utility blade began scratching the Deck. The bending test had my stomach in knots. This was as riveting as the Japanese horror movie AUDITION. Great video, lots of stuff learned! 😁👍
iFixit is meant to have spare parts for these available at some point, so Zack should be able to repair his deck to fully working conditon no matter how badly he takes it apart 😁
This was a DOGSHIT take. A higher brightness screen = less battery life and higher cost. A laser etched anti-glare coating was the best way to go. This one gets a downvote.
@@koftespiess I never thought I'd see someone call themselves a Kofta skewer unironically, but here we are. Oh yes, I'm called after the World Health Organization and the city that gave us the most recent and possible worst pandemic of the last century. Neat… Btw., as you seem to be a fellow German (or Southern breakaway [Swiss, Liechtensteiner, Austrian]), did you order a Steam Deck yet? I did and I'm now waiting for the Micron 2TB M.2 NMVe LTT already showcased to arrive to assemble into my creatively headsinked, powerbank'd and reskinned (that's a lie) Deck.
3:55 screw damaging the Deck (although it does hurt to see) ; what bugs me the most is the thumb in direct line of fire with that blade. One simple slip will earn a trip to the emergency room
I’ve never seen your videos & didn’t know what to expect… Once you got the box cutter out & started to scratch & slice the body of the deck, my anxiety literally went through the roof! This hit different. I couldn’t stop watching through the gaps of my fingers covering my eyes 😂
3:06 JerryRig:”You might have read online that some of the lower quality Steam Deck screen protectors are hampering the touch sensitivity of the display” *applying the screen protector* The Steam Deck: *AAAAAAAAAAA*
Feel like if he can bend it without the screen cracking, dropping it short distances is fine. I'd worry more about the analog sticks than the screen, since they'd hit the ground first.
This is what I love about utility focused devices. They are tough! Unlike phones made from glass and metals to feel "premium" but breaks if you so much as look at it wrong, this thing took a beating. My switch lite has been dropped multiple times, accidentally became a doorstopper..twice. It has a lot of marks and all, but everything works flawlessly. With phones, it's all about superficiality and feeling like a snobbish bastard.
I put in a pre order in October 2021 for a high end steam deck, and my expected availability time is in October 2022😆 jeez these things are gonna be hard to get
Wow....after being super careful about my switch, seeing the steam deck hold up so well and still function perfectly well to those bend tests was impressive!
Still waiting on my steam deck and I reserved it near when it was first able to do so, and you're able to get one to fuck up? Man...I think I'll need to not buy one now.
The Steam Deck is incredibly priced considering its hardware is years ahead of the Switch both in performance and the build quality. The Switch feels like a toy compared to the Deck
@@terrorpocket I think the biggest issue is the Switch is still using an Android Tablet SOC, vs the Steamdeck using a full-size APU. Regardless of age of either processor, the full-size APU is obviously going to perform better
Hi Zack, will you please see what will happen if you push really hard at the centre of the Steam Deck while it's flat on the ground? Or even if you step on it. Like stepping on it while coming down from your bed while forgetting that you left it on the floor last night
@@FR4M3Sharma Amazing reply though it is important to not perpetuate the ignorance as the steam deck is seriously misunderstood (kinda like steam itself with lots of "competitors" failing because they dont understand what makes steam so good)
@@FR4M3Sharma bad take. It’s always worth informing people when they ask genuine questions, even if they need more information than they’re initially asking for.
Keep cutting towards your fingers with a razor blade while adding applied pressure in that direction, genius! Won't be long before you regret these decisions of complacency... Sharpen up your practices my man, no pun intended!
God this hurts to watch. I can't even get hold of one and he's just shanking that thing up haha. Great durability test though. At least if you do it no one else has to. Keep up the great work
An ultra-thin screen protector glass is glass and glass needs to be protected 😅 so that's what people are choosing the thicker ones for better protection but then they risking to touch sensitivity.
I love the videos, I think you do a great job of testing the product. These tests are necessary to improve the quality of the product. Also, it allows us to see how the product can withstand basic scratches / damages. Great work!
Would putting a screen protector on the anti glare screen essentially remove the anti glare properties and make it pretty much useless at that point? Just curious whether or not I should put one on mine. The scratchability of the etched screen has me worried now lol
Imo would depend on the adhesive of the screen protector, i know there are some that can fill scratches to give the appearance of a new screen, so one like that could possibly make the anti glare etching a mute point.
It still scratches like normal glass. Just don't go rubbing stuff on it as it acts like sand paper and would need to be cleaned off with a wet rag to get rid of the particulates that the glass has sanded off
I can not watch this.... But if I can be honest I am thinking about getting a second deck myself. I have the biggest one and the first thing I did was adding a non glare screen protection (I bought the deck because of the bigger glas and non glare and so I basically fooled myself....) . My next one will surely be the cheap one and I will change the ssds and install windows there so I have both options with steam os and windows 10.
Nice video and interesting hardware. As much as a Switch, Steam Deck, or Aya Neo would be really cool, I barely have time to play the games on XBox Game Pass. Same with my kids. Portability is nice but giving time to play. And that skin is pretty cool!
This is a very helpful video, yet very disturbing at the same time. It gives an opposite feeling of watching someone trying to restore/repair some old stuff. 😂 Again, really appreciate the video!!
As a poor stralian mofo that can’t get this delivered to my country. I literally died inside watching that first steam deck get mutilated lol. I guess people know how scratch resistant it is now though.
Thanks for that Jerry. I always wondered how much pressure can steam deck take, how resistant to bending is it. Seeing how much force you used and steam deck still survived gave me some piece of mind.
how does a screen protector look on the anti glare model compare to the normal one? I'm getting the anti glare one mostly for the storage and case but I'm interested if a matte screen protector doubles the etched screen making it look really bad or if its just as if it was on the non etched
I was thinking: Since the "upgraded" glass is etched, it might be acting like a rasp or file, and not a smooth sheet of glass. The picks might actually be losing material when rubbing up against the glass.
The Steam Deck passing the bend test might be more important than it looks. If you need a stress reliever when you ragequit (it doesn't need to be multiplayer), the Steam Deck might also fit the bill.
I reserved the middling level steam deck, glad the "special" glass on the high end one isn't so great. It will be connected to a monitor as an extra pc anyway.
It is great. This video is just a dogshit take. Making the screen brighter would have killed battery life. Going with a laser etching was the best way to improve playability on a portable. It works brilliantly for most lighting conditions. Being directly under literal filming stage lights isn't a normal use case... It's a very good etching job too (not Apple nano glass level, but not dramatically far off either). Go look at people that actually give a shit about gaming tech like RetroGamesCorp for a MUCH better screen glass comparison.
