Pro Tip: Instead of using the fat pick to break the adhesive from the screen, use a laminated playing card. Laminated cards are stiff, thin and provide much more surface area you can force between the adhesive. As an added bonus, you can use multiple cards to keep the screen from resealing to the adhesive.
@Xaxxus
@Xaxxus Год назад
Pro tip: you can get an etched glass screen protector that will be just as good for $20. The problem with the etched glass screen is that a screen protector probably won’t adhere to it nicely. so you lose the ability to protect it properly. Just make sure you don’t cheap out when buying the screen protector. Because some “matte” screen protectors feel like sandpaper or are made of cheap plastic. You want something like a MagGlass anti-glare tempered glass screen protector.

Honestly, with how little power the Steam Deck draws you could even use the carbon fiber sheets that TG sells (Carbonaut) and most likely get pretty good thermals out of it (also it’s reusable so you wouldn’t have to worry about replacing thermal paste every time you took the cooler off). Electrical conductivity would be a problem still if you don’t cut it and place it right, but it’d be less risky and also safer for the APU die than liquid metal as with liquid metal you have to worry about not using enough or using too much, and also how it may potentially eat away at the surface of the die over time.
@Sevent77
@Sevent77 Год назад
I'd kill for a OLED screen upgrade, also I would prefer the glass screen but I wanted the larger capacity so I picked that, reason for that is that the mat finish absorbs all light instead of directly reflecting it, this makes high contrast colors not to look as vivid as ona glass screen.

You save less than $100 because the 500 gb ssd is between $50 to $80 which will make the base model basically equal to the expensive one. Now for those who are less experienced with repair ask yourself if the risk of destroying your steam deck to save about $80 is worth it?
@SuperChocolateCocoaBear

Absolutely, at the risk of totally wrecking your brand spanking new Steam Deck to save $80.oo dollars, just isn't worth it for me and probably others. Also, running games off of an SD Card means that your Internal Storage is going to be used for Pre-Cached Shaders. I applaud Valve for giving users choice and making it easier for those of us who don't want to tinker that much with the Steam Deck. Now back to ricing my Linux desktop.

@drivejapan6293
@drivejapan6293 Год назад
I get it if you damage your screen why not "upgrade," but if not then just get an anti-glare screen protector and have the best of both worlds. If you use the touch capability of the screen a lot then you are going to eventually make the screen lose its anti-glare ability over time anyways. I think a gloss screen will end up being the better choice in the long run because of this. You can literally buy a nice protector for a tablet for around $10~$20 and cut it to size or even find one that is made for the deck. No need to open your expensive toy and risk doing something detrimental to its health if you don't need to.

Playing Gloomwood made this immediately noticeable, so after owning it for only 3 days I already sent it back for RMA. It should be received by Valve on Dec 7th, so we'll see how long it takes to get it back home. I hope they just replace the screen because I was stoked to get a Deck with a quiet fan (meaning not the high pitched Delta model fan). Dude I have something I would LOVE you to do. I'm desperate for someone to have another go at adding a beefy external heatsync, like what Linus and Alex did, but locate it centrally on the back between the thumb grips. Do a proper job with less jank! ha.

It would be a cool touch if the screen pick had a little mark on it at 1/8th inch so you don’t go in too far. Just a little touch.

Thanks for convincing me not to do this myself - I'll order just the display and take it to a local repair shop instead.
