i could be wrong, but I believe the DLC thing is just dev dependent. I remember some games, you can get the DLC from anywhere, as long as the dev has a steam key generated for the DLC key. As a developer on Steam, I'd like to say for the record that DRM has to be explicitly enabled by the developer, and many games choose not to do this. As an example: ULTRAKILL comes with no DRM whatsoever on Steam, you could zip the game and send it to your friend if you wanted and it would boot just fine (though obviously that would be illegal). If a game has DRM, it's because the developer explicitly chose to add DRM to it. It is not Steam's choice to make

Some games even do (albeit a lot of it is an adult game) use an outside patch (or you can say dlc nowadays) to apply dlc/patch to unlock certain things or other example is a lot of games with steam twitch integration, forum integration, etc. How to detect that the user applicable to use the DLC is developer/publisher problem (even if they use steam) and not steam.

The reason you can't use DLC from other platforms, is very simple, and more than one: 1- They don't have any reliable way of authorizing it, because no competitor would bother building such a bond between two stores on the same platform. 2- Buy on Epic or another store, Download on Steam? Yeah, it will use Steam's servers, which means the other store could make unfair profit by not actually having servers and leaving all the load to Steam, while Steam pays all the hosting bills with zero gain.

WRONG ! to the chatter who says if steam shuts down you lose everything.... TIME and TIME again, you have to educate people, steam and valve have a killswitch in place if the company was ever to shutdown, that would remove all DRMS from ALL of your library, meaning that yes, you could download the actual gamefiles with the .exe and yes that's also how you can play steamgames while having no internet connections, basicly you'd get a GOG copy of your game, and ofc it wouldn't work for online only games ( although if they put a private launcher you could theoraticly still play as long as the servers are up ) so no... you do have ownership of your games on steam, you have an unlimited time license for all your games ( although steam has the right to bann you and prevent you from using their service, as written in the terms of service ) and if that license was to expire ( valve going bankrupt for exemple ) you'll get a limited time, ( atleast a few weeks, companies don't close in a day ) to download your entire library. ( stockpile on harddrives ) A very important feature, and service EPIC doesn't provide for exemple, leaving that out there...

Because they are hypocrites. A lot of the things gamers complain about in the AAA space (digital-only, DRM, "play-to-earn", lootboxes, actual GAMBLING, etc.) was pioneered by Valve/Steam, oddly enough. Steam had to be SUED by the Australian government to allow refunds. This is also the same company that successfully appealed a ruling that would've allowed customers to resell digital games.

Friendly reminder that the law firm backing this lawsuit, Milberg London LLP, is the same firm that is part of a lawsuit involving Sony and Playstation for similar reason

In SA regions, third-party sellers are much cheaper than Steam because they have coupon stacking. Hogwarts Legacy for example got roughly a 78% off (with coupon) from a big SA third-party seller.

I kind of have to say tho I once lost internet connection for an entire month because of nearby construction digging and literally I could not put steam into offline mode I was required to be online first to go into functional offline mode so every single solo player game I wanned to start up did not run because steam had no internet connection even tho the games literally have no online features to them at all. I had to go and buy an actual Wifi bluetooth device to go online with my smartphones hotspot to put steam into offline mode and be able to play offline single player games and that is just absolutely absurd to me. I bought that game. All the files required are on my PC. It does not have online access. Why can I not run it without booting steam? This is like buying a car from Tesla but the engine only starts after scanning your face but then the database is stored on a satellite instead of the local machine so if it has no internet connection it can´t authenticate your face and you can´t drive...

Gigachad Thor. Agreed on that. As for game access if steam shuts down, we only have Gaben's word that they'll do something if that happens.

People that don't work in the industry, talking about weather the 30% cut is or isn't egregious, is never not frustrating.

My main concern involves me being able to keep my steam games if the service ever shuts down. But depending on if it gets worse or not, I will try to find a way to preserve them myself. But only if it gets worse.

Games should not require a platform to use.. All games should be usable in any launcher... its a game launcher...

That is actually very fair point, if anything publisher should be held accountable to provide access to people who bought game in any platform. So if they want to sue someone , or change something they should start with it

"Shutting out the competition" Yet companies like EA force you to launch games on their on Launcher regardless if you want it on steam.

wanna sue the guys suing steam for being anti consumer. steam always provided a pro consumer service. better than piracy and that speaks volumes

I do think on PC you nice you own the game on any platform it should be available as such. Gate keeping dlcs under a launcher is also annoying.
