Steam powered street organ

This is an adaption of an off- the -shelf 16 note crank organ. The hand crank drives 2 sets of leather bellows in series. The music is cut on what is called a book (just one song). The air slots are cut on folding pages of the book for differing duration of each note played. Much simpler than a steam calliope. It is running on air for this test video, but will be on steam once I get the propane tank filled.
The main organ fits in just a 14" cube and has the 3 lowest tone wooden pipes folded inside like the letter L & J. The advantage of an engine running it is stable/adjustable speed.
The maker is a Ukrainian born craftsman living in CT. He makes a range of these and this is his smallest called "OldFellow 16". This is the smallest functional one I have ever seen.
See www.zayaruzost...
I built my own cart and styled it per the European examples, but it is a bit on the heavy side with the steam engine and boiler added. Wooden chain and sprockets transfer engine power to the hand crank shaft. Music selection is limited to MIDI files that can make a 16 note song. To my knowledge there is only 1 source in the world to adapt music and cut the music books. I do have 2 ragtime tunes for it. This is a close to a miniature working pipe organ as one can expect and I really like it. This video was a first/only cut so far. I am a machinist, so the engine part was what I love to make. Not so good with wood work as compared to metal. Improvements have since been made and can be appreciated in the more recent video. Thanks.

The best of both worlds, steam plus organ music. The technology does kind of go together. Congratulations with your instrument. As a musician and calliope player, it is amazing what can be played within such a limited number of notes.

I agree having seen a trailer mounted Gavioli fairground organ being powered by a showmans engine in the flesh its an absolutely fantastic combination

I heard tell of a calliope in central New Jersey that the owner would play everyday. River boats on the Mississippi also were fitted with them.

This is technically not a steam powered calliope. Instead this is a modified hand crank organ. My steam engine simply turns the crank for me. Steam only goes to the engine. Mechanical air bellows pump air to the pipes. Still mixing live steam with pipe sounds is fun.

Short of wind. Either crank it faster or get a better set of bellows.

Good observation. Thanks. Need to get with organ builder. Will try increasing speed.
@timbithar1
@timbithar1 3 года назад
@@jimnjanetriffle4496 No need to increase speed, the organ has leaky bellows or a leak within the system, possible the reservoir relief valve has failed.
@jimnjanetriffle4496
@jimnjanetriffle4496 3 года назад
@@timbithar1 Many thanks for your observation and suggestion. I studied the bellows operation and the lower set of pump bellows pumped alternately as expected, but the larger upper bellows did not move or fill. I could barely pry it to move with my fingers. Turns out there was a huge 6 pound pressure spring pressing on top of them. Removed spring and it fills with air and so everything smoothed out. Did check the relief valve and it was sealing, but with a pretty strong spring on it which I left alone. Pumps out tunes well now. Thanks again.
@andrewbarrett1537
@andrewbarrett1537 3 месяца назад
@@jimnjanetriffle4496 The big bellow on the top with the spring is called a 'reservoir' and its entire purpose is to act as a reserve storage of air (so that when the roll calls for larger chords to be played, the instrument doesn't run out of air to sound all the notes) and also to smooth out the fluctuations of the alternately-pumping feeder bellows. Traditionally, a reservoir (also known as a regulator) is either sprung, weighted, or both, to establish the pressure for the rest of the organ. In some cases, in addition to the safety valve (which opens when the reservoir is completely full, to spill some air out to prevent damage from over-inflation), there may be another adjustable regulator valve which cuts off the supply to the windchest/pipes when too full, but opens up again when the pressure has gone down to a reasonable level. If you talk to an organbuilder, and particularly one with experience with street organs, they can help. In some organs, the springs or weights are adjustable to help set the best pressure for the clearest speech from the pipes.

One Bellow is not enough for an organ. You need to have at least two for a consistent sound.

Ok, and what planet did you say you come from? This is wonderful. Thanks for the description and link but exactly how are the air slots designed and cut, a die of some sort? Maybe that is in the link. I’ll check.

There is one guy in France who can take a Midi file and send it to a custom made punch. Only certain song files can be used since there is a limited supply of air in the bellows. So "Toccota and fugue in d minor" would be a problem. Also there is an abbreviated "keyboard of notes" to use.

My video production staff is down to just one now. I will need to go up to the 3rd floor and have a sit-down with him. He has been lazy lately and would rather build stuff than do videos.
