Steam Update: Use Any Controller, Not Just Steam Controller (think Xpadder on STEROIDS) Xbox, PS4

My set up for what? This was an overview of how to register a controller to use the Steam configuration. Once your controller is registered to your Steam Account (like I did in video). Once you do that you can find profiles for games in Community page of controller configuration or make your own.

In the game that I'm trying to play with two players (Divinity Original Sin: Enhanced Edition), my Steam Controller and generic 360 controller (I think it's called a "turbo controller") are being recognized as the same input. Is there a way to switch it? Changing it to unique for both of them doesn't affect it. Thanks!

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out. This video was when this feature FIRST dropped. It's only gotten better since then.

Well... mostly. My Arma profile didn't port over as 1:1. I would need to fiddle with it. For the most part though, you are going to get a big majority of the profile fine. You'll just need to bind in what had been on the grips and possibly dpad stuff (in this vid the dpad stuff wasn't translated over). Moving forward, I hate to disappoint but I will say I will more than likely NOT tweak any of my profiles for other controllers. I welcome folks to try and fiddle but I'm staying in the Steam Controller camp since to me it is without the doubt the most definitive and accurate controller choice on the market. Also, I'm very... particular with stuff like this so if I made each profile for 360 and PS4 I would never get anything done because I'd be changing a lot to focus on each controller's strengths.

That's why I ask Mr Egg.... Because I know if you set your mind to it you would come up with a truly superb Xbox Controller profile (I'm told flattery will get me everywhere!). I'm going to have to try to do this for Squad and Insurgency, two games I bought in the winter sale but suck at when trying to use the Steam controller. There's an element of not wanting to devote a large amount of time to retraining my brain to use a new input method I'll admit but with so little time to play it's natural to go for the easier option. With taps and holds I guess there should be enough bindings. The other thing that I could not get to grips with was the dual stage trigger aiming. I got roasted in every fire fight when accidentally engaging that! Anyways I admire your work. Keep it up fella. Cheers from t'other side of the pond! :-)

Yeah, dual stage triggers still mess me up sometimes. I tend to NOT put anything on right trigger dual but can handle it ok on left trigger. And I really don't like aim down sights and fire both on right trigger. Too much muscle memory from years of controller fps for me to adapt.

Exactly. I'll try delving into a profile soon on my days off. Squad looked like an awesome game/military sim so I really want to get into it. Also, it amazes me with Insurgency that they haven't brought it to consoles. It seems to be the type of game that could wipe the floor with COD in gameplay and map size. Anyway I digress. Paul South You just have to be patient with it. I'd recommend for learning the Steam Controller that you start with Portal 2, you can test out FPS style settings in a safe environment. After that, Doom 2016 is fucking amazing with it.

+Slacks Nawfside it definitely gives xpadder a run for its money.

I would think it would be game dependent. The devs would have had to code it in as a response.

My guess is it probably needs to be x-input but I'm genuinely not sure. I don't own any other usb controllers. Test it out and let us know. ;)

I have a really old logitech rumblepad 2. It is only DirectInput and it works fine. You have to map your buttons to XInput layout and then you have a generic Xinput controller with this new feature. It is really awesome. The only problem I had was that my gamepad doesn't have guide button, so i had to remap the select button to guide button and lost I usable button only for that. PS: Logitech Rumble pad 2 is a HID (human interface device) so i think all gamepad HID will work.

Looks like my Snes controller works, technically. I am able to navigate BPM out of the box. The binding is borked though. With a generic controller I need to do a binding setup, and it will only let me register "x axis" and "y axis" on up and left, both on the stick and dpad. I hope they will include controllers like this later.

On steam OS the generic controller option is much more dedicated to arcade sticks that are custom made. And older controllers to be recognized. It basically made my Logitech Rumble pad 2 to be recognized so now I can play Xinput only games with a non X-input ready controller. It is especially useful for fighting games for example so that my legacy PC arcade stick gets picked up by the steam controller API and lures the figthing games as an Xinput controller . no more opening up a text file to configure a legacy aracde stick in steam OS and other linux distros... it is also making hot swapping of legacy controllers doable now for legacy sticks so that I can welcome anyone with ANY controller for a fighting game session now. ;)

Shadow - Gaming, USB wired controllers or you need the Xbox Wireless adapter for PC. Newer Xbox One controllers have Bluetooth and can use that instead.

Heh. well, you COULD use my Steam Controller profile with a 360 controller but yeah, like in the vid, it won't be perfect and you're going to lose some features.

You could do several things with the steam configuration. You could make an 8 button radial touch menu, you could make a cycle binding on one button (it would cycle from 1 to 2 to 3 then back to 1 to 2 to 3, etc) that's in Activator menu (I go over that in some of my tutorial vids) you could also make press and holds on dpad so normal up down left right was 1, 2, 3, 4 and long press up down left right was 5, 6, 7, 8.

I don't have any to test but I believe a few have mentioned in comments and on forums that their Dinputs have worked.

Trackpads will work as a joystick (though there's DEFINITELY a period of adjustment). If you watch my Arma 3 vids you can see how I set it up for ground and air vehicles. I like to use gyro as an analog steering wheel for ground and I use left stick for helicopters. Then I put left and right trigger for analog rudders and have gyro as mouse for headlook. If the game allows mouse for look then yeah, it can work for looking and you can bind something else to the right pad.

For DCS you need a full HOTAS, at least a cheap one like the X52 (preferably the Pro version), don't even bother without it, it's a waste of time and money. I'm using X52 and a webcam + freetracknoir for head tracking, that's basically a minimum setup. Even if you use the gyro as a stick it still won't be precise enough.

Yeah. You should be able to play any and every game in your Steam Library now! And if it's not in steam just add it as a non steam shortcut and you should be able to configure the controller.

+Turtle Pain I used xpadder before steam controller and now with steam opening up steam controller configuration for lots of other controllers I'd recommend that. It has more features than most paid remapping programs.

I've had controller companion for a while now and while I'm super happy to use steams remapping application it sadly makes my left analog stick (regardless of controller) type arrow keys. Any idea on how to fix that? I can't seem to edit the bindings outside of a steam game (which makes sense I guess). Thanks for the quick reply though

+Turtle Pain hmm. You should be able to change it. You can edit outside of game by right clicking on game in library of desktop steam. There's an option for controller configuration.

Okay, so I was finally able to get back to my desktop and edit my controller configs. Strangely enough it does say that my left stick is set to my left stick...but it still acts as if it's imputing both the left stick (which is correct) as well as the arrow keys. It only does this after enabling said controller's support on steam and after disabling it the problem is gone...at least now I know I'm not crazy.

I don't have that particular game but yes, you can use it with games that have controller support and tweak inputs around, like if you wanted to move Reload button or Jump and so forth.

verify you are getting Steam Overlay while in game and preferably you want it to pull up Big Picture Mode when using a supported controller (the configuration stuff is dependent on big picture overlay). And also verify you registered the controller and have the right checkbox selected like I did in video.

If it's a 360 controller it needs the official wireless usb dongle to connect to a PC.

+Tim Andoni are you getting big picture overlay while in game? If not you could try running steam as administrator before launching the game.

Well, I have a VERY complete and robust Steam Controller profile for Arma 3 (check my vids). You could import that one for the xbox controller once you go through the steps here to let the steam configuration mapping access it. Then right click on Arma 3 in steam and Configure Controller, from there you can press X to Browse Configs and find mine in the Community Configurations. I have vids that go over all of this stuff in my Steam Controller Tutorial playlist. Pretty much all of that applies to your Xbox One controller unless I'm going over specific things on Steam Controller like Gyro.

I'll definitely be following your steps and the relevant videos tomorrow, ill try and get my shit set up. it's cased my head in all day watching and following old videos that are now obsolete trying to use my controller on pc. going from bf4 on xb1 to arma 3 is very overwhelming and stressful so far. I've only played about 3 minutes of arma in this past 24 hour's. 😂😂

Just to add, my Arma profile won't work perfectly for you, you'll probably need to tweak it some since it was catered to Steam Controller. The majority of it should work fine though or you might find other profiles made specifically for Xbox One controllers in the Community Profiles.

Yeah, just stick with it. Arma is a VERY overwhelming game that has a ton of content. It's fun but it definitely veers more to the simulation side with a lot of stuff so it's not always easy to just hop in.

In Skyrim you have to enable or disable gamepad support depending on what kind of configuration you wanted to make. You won't be able to mix mouse and controller inputs, it's all one or the other so if you want mouse and keyboard inputs you'll need to make a controller profile in steam that is emulating all mouse / keyboard.

Didn't register? I've never heard of that. Are you checking the profile bindings? A lot of profiles won't work perfectly because they were made for Steam Controller. You can filter profiles by controller type.

I'll check again at some point, I only saw the enabling boxs for ps4 and Xbox controllers I never intended on making profiles I'd usually bind in game so I'm not cross referencing a ton. I have a feeling in the end it doesnt work as well as xpadder. That dude for xpadder has put allot of personal attention into it for years. Still always good to have options.

As someone who used xpadder so much that some mistake me as the creator, I'd say steam configuration has more flexibility and options. Touch menus and radial menus add quite a lot. Only thing lacking compared to xpadder right now is some of the more advanced macros.

I was never one to get used to multiple profiles I literally test everything quickly before I play a game doing these kinds of things. I was very impressed with the options they make the elite controllers amazing app look tame. The outer zones for a joystick to invert or change input blew my mind. Especially since other mention of joysticks seemed to be lacking. Like a directional pad isn't a joystick? Alright mabey on a steam controller. I can imagine it has more obscure settings some may have never used, but the basics have to be there right now I'd say it should still be in beta based of my simple experience I dunno I still utterly hate keyboards as gaming input I'm glad things are developing

Sorry, I use Steam Controller exclusively. You can import the Steam Controller one but it'll need tweaking to work with less inputs on a 360.

Try running steam as admin. If I recall, Stalker is notorious for blocking the Steam Overlay unless Steam is running as admin. If that doesn't work you could also try GloSC (search my vids), it's a utility that can extend the steam overlay on games that are being finicky.

Don't they already have full controller support? You shouldn't need to use the steam controller mapper unless you wanted to drastically change controls around. If the controller isn't working properly I'm not sure it would be recognized by the Steam Configurator (steam mapping software).

tx for quick response. I'm not much good at "tweaking" things in system setups, etc. I did notice that steam had some new controller config. options but my NFS isn't in steam. I do have Project Cars in steam and Grid but same problems and my PC/Laptop isn't upgraded enough to run Project cars well at all so I let my son have it to play Grid 2 is horrid with controller or keyboard. I got it when I got the laptop and it was part of a promo thing and I like racing games so I bought it and installed it and can't play it much at all. IDK. even with keyboard the cars won't control very well. The controller is recognized and works per say but doesn't steer the cars well at all. I've been looking up troubleshooting for a long time and I've noticed lots of posts stating similar..like the car turns right but wont come back etc.. i.e. response. I bought NFS through origin.. just remembered.. yeah I know.. big mistake. anyway..it just doesn't respond correctly at all. I just can't play it like that although I've tried.. sometimes get a laugh out of it. anyway.. lost cause I guess. tx :)

Hmm. Well, you can add the Origin shortcut into Steam and try the steam configuration. I'm just not sure if it would fix your problem, it might be more an issue with the PC version of NFS. I have some videos on adding Origin games for Steam Controller support, it can be a bit finicky.

Every game I've tried (I use steam controller). You can also play non steam games as long as you add them to steam.

I don't have one so I can't test but I've heard that it does not and you need to use a different utility to bind those. That could just be a bug in Beta though.

Actually I have an elite controller plus REWASD software, it performs very good remapping the control but the app it´s in its early versions stage, so doesn't have all the functions I would like to have. Thanks for the answer!!!

the xbox elite triggers the same buttons as the face if I remember correctly, they do this in order for people to be able to bring it to tournaments.
