perfect explanation man! yes I agree. I've tried both.. the steam OS gaming it's the only thing that makes the deck great. But Asus understood that and you can use the armory crate much better now to control TPS and stuff. the game I noticed the differences was on cyberpunk. it ran much smoother on the steam os, but yeah the different if minimal for lots of games.

There's like a curve, of people who don't really wanna mess with their deck that much and just use what Steam lets them do will stay on SteamOS and probably never even touch desktop mode, than a little higher on the curve there's people that realize Windows will unlock a lot of the more standard PC things that the steam side of steamOS can't do, but then even further you go you realize steamOS is actually just Linux, with an endless amount of customization, but almost too much depending on what you want.

It's fine if you want to install Windows (or any other non-SteamOS OS) on the Steam Deck - that's one of beauties of an open system like the Deck. However, it should be noted that Valve's only officially supported Deck OS is SteamOS - it is what is shipped with the Steam Deck after all. You can see this support level by comparing the number/frequency of SteamOS updates vs. those provided for Windows on the Deck (i.e. primarily the drivers). There were dozens of SteamOS-specific updates and only a handful for Windows in 2022. Heck, it took months to get around to adding audio support (a rather crucial feature fir a gaming device!) to the Windows drivers. Heck, there isn't even official dual-boot support yet (so you can easily boot between SteamOS and Windows), despite 10 months having elapsed since its public launch. It must be remembered that the vast majority of users run the OS that was pre-installed on their device and the Deck is no exception. By studying the Steam survey figures, people have worked out that well under 1% of Deck users have Windows installed. Windows is actually less popular on the Deck than Linux is across all desktop/laptops and this is mainly down to the fact that SteamOS is a very good OS out of the box and Windows (particularly version 11) most certainly isn't.
@Runescape.

laughing out loud. you made all that drivel up. valve has no idea how many people installed windows on their deck, once you wipe the operating system off it, they have no idea what you've done with it. keep making up more BS to tell us, i'm sure we'd love to hear it.

It does worsen the battery life if you install windows but I don’t think it’s much of a game changer. If you’re wanting to focus on battery life, use steam os. But if you want to play games that aren’t compatible with Steam OS then to me, it’s worth sacrificing a little bit of battery to play the games that I really want to play

I decided I want to move to windows, but then I thought about one little thing that makes me stop: what about sleeping/waking with power button? Does it work at all? If yes, does it work good? Don't think it will be just as fast as steam os, tho if it at least works and I won't have to shutdown steam deck each time I want to walk outta deck, I will surely move to windows, steam os is a console experience, I hate consoles for it's closure, I Ve always been a PC gamer with features like mods and all that stuff. So, does it work?

Dude it's not a console, it's a hole pc, based on linux, you can run nearly anything what you can run with windows on linux, but you have to switch to the desktop mode, and may have to follow some tutorials made for linux or/and steamos ;)
@mikhailpadin3829
@mikhailpadin3829 Год назад
@@hero_jonashdjp9562 okay. Run CoD or battlefield, run parsec being the host. Run some VPN apps, oculus app, run games with mods, run beammp launcher, run GTA RP launcher. Dude, yes, basically it's a PC, yes it runs Linux like a PC can run and uses steam as a game library, which is a PC games library. The only thing is that a PC can use any PC library, let's say, battle net launcher, which u can use of course, but u won't run heroes of the storm, it won't work, and overwatch let's say, will be lagging as hell, because of missing shader pre-cache, which steam games are downloading for each game it can run on steam library. This thing pretends to be a PC like having a keyboard and mouse support, and even a desktop mode which like pretty much PC, but you are still unable to do sooo many things under Linux, and the only best option is PC library with deck verified and playable games (yes, I know that sometimes even an unsupported game will run too) that it makes you feel it like a console experience. Under Linux, it's a console experience, that wants to look like a hybrid of a console and a desktop, but still has too many restrictions to call itself a PC.
@hero_jonashdjp9562
@hero_jonashdjp9562 Год назад
@@mikhailpadin3829 Yep this is mostly true. But you cant compare a Linux-environment with a console. Linux is a giant tool witch can run everything of your imagination, its just ends by the borders of proprietary software. You can install everything on the Steamdeck what you could install on other linux distros. I dont have a steamdeck, punch me idk. But i run all my devices with Linux even hardware witch is meant to run window Proprietary. for example my Surface Go (2018) 4gb-ram 64gb storage + 512gb SD. I run all my games on my 14inch Zenbook duo without dedicated graphics. The hardware of my zenbook is very comparable to the steamdeck: 16gb ram with i7 1165G7. U see Linux is my dailydrivesystem. I only boot back into windows for Vr (witch maybe change sometimes) and if i want to play with friends one ore two round Valorant. I even use the Unrealengine under Linux. I even tried steamOs one one of my gaming rigs. And i have to say it was awesome :], but the steam-UI just broke. I can still use the linux desktop and run all games there, but you get the point it was not ready, maybe i can fix it sometime. You right about these games you count except Overwatch. I played it, it runs great :] About FiveM, i googled around a bit, and yes it seems that it will never run due to injectionmethoed witch is not supported with the dxvk wine implementation under linux. Other games with direct modding support just works out of the box with mods, for example Company of heroes 2, Especially Minecraft. But most of the other games just works fine even if the ProtonDB status says unkown or unsupported. I even play the games of my EpicGames Library thanks to the HeroicGamesLauncher witch is better than the original EpicGamesLauncher on Windows, just saying. A "Console" would never be able to do such things, or would allow you to download games or software from the competition. About the anti-cheat debate i can just blame the game devs/studios. Battle-eye and Easy-Anti-cheat both support linux with a flip of a switch. And Kernel-Anticheats are the hugest backdoors into your system. Gensin-Impacts-kernelanticheat is one example for an Kernelanticheat witch was abused (by intruders). There is nothing good about having another blackbox biting itself inside your blackboxedkernel.
