I feel like Ed saying "I suppose I do work for Blackbeard" is him admitting that Blackbeard is, in fact, an image that he has to live up to and he does all that bad stuff to fit that image because that's all people value about him. Once you remove people's appreciation for that image and get someone like Stede Bonnet into the picture who shows him how easy it is to be yourself as opposed to living up to an idolised version of you, Ed finally starts embracing himself. God I love this show.
ed touching stede’s stuff like he’s never been allowed to have soft, nice things. stede extending out those things to him is what made ed fall in love with him in the first place; stede gave him a place to be soft. i’m so glad they’re living together happily by the end of the first season :^)
@@bedtimerat I liked the end. It’s sad, but if it was a happy ending we might not need/get a season 2. This will be their reunion/reconciliation/redemption.
I love the connection between these two but when I heard Stede ask that, all my brain could think of is a video game shop owner NPC greeting the main character who has walked into a fabric/clothing shop 😅
I love the fact that Gnossienne No. 5 is playing already in their first conversation (this is the theme that plays when they eat breakfast at the end of ep. 5, "you wear fine things well", the bathtub scene, and the kiss). This was being set up the whole time
THANK YOU for commenting the name of the piece that was playing during these scenes. I knew I recognized it but I couldn't remember for the life of me what it was called
omg i love how the season ended perfectly just like this scene and nothing bad ever happened! i sure love how ed and stede left together and lucius and the crew are just happily onboard as per usual!
I noticed that as well. I suspect that is part of the reason Izzy hates Stede so much. He was originally the only one to know blackbeard as more than blackbeard and Stede stole that from him
Izzy is in love with Blackbeard. He thought he (Izzy) was the most intimate favorite with this powerful, menacing idol. He felt privileged to call The Great Blackbeard by his personal name. Then he saw this fop using the private name EDWARD as if he had a right or could handle the hurricane, and Izzy kept calling him Blackbeard after that trying to reinforce that BLACKBEARD was aboard, not just this gentle-spoken funny doofus "Edward". He was trying to convince both Stede, and the crew, and even Edward himself of that. Izzy doesn't love Edward. Izzy loves Blackbeard. He loves the power associated with the menace, not the feelings associated with the man.
sorry 😣 Izzy does call him Edward when Blackbeard tells him to go invite Stede onto the ship. He says, "Oh, Edward, can't I just send the boys?" Izzy and Calico Jack get so mad about Stede calling him Edward or Ed because they don't feel like he should be allowed to use his more personal, intimate names, but Blackbeard introduced himself that way, that's the note they start on. ♥️ 😭 i love this show jfc
Frankly when Blackbeard shushes Stede I think that’s when Stede realizes how deep in shit he is if the coolest pirate in the world just shared an intimate moment with him. That REALLY sets the stage for Stede’s gradual affection to develop, whereas Blackbeard has been ruminating on Stede for a little longer and had just charmed The Fab Pants off of him.
@Tara Allen I think part of it is that Izzy lied and said that Stede didn’t want to meet him, when Stede didn’t know it was Blackbeard that wanted to meet with him. With his reputation among pirates, to be turned down like that was probably rare and made him even more interested in meeting Stede.
God yes thank you I love the part where Ed is handling the cashmere and it makes Stede SO HAPPY AND EXCITED that he gets to share one of his passions with another pirate, and I thought for sure that I would have to wait a while before this was clipped :)
And all I can hear is the very first playing of their love song in the background... starting with the moment Ed touches the cashmere to his face. It's been all throughout the series but I only really notice it after it's all ended...
i keep thinking about the reason why ed puts his hands over stede’s and i can’t, for the life of me, figure out a logical explanation other than the fact that ed had fancied him even right before they ever actually met. he’s heard of the gentleman pirate and was fascinated by him, and was even more enthralled when he saw him and the state of his ship and crew.
It's basically/visually Prince Charming awakening Sleeping Beauty, the hand touch substituting for a kiss. Like all the little backslaps, shoulder grabs, clinking glasses, swordplay tutorials, etc. in the next few episodes.
@Tara Allen I think at first his obsession with stede, trying to get him to talk to him and making izzy follow him around was because he was confused and fascinated by how Stede could be and was a "gentle pirate" and he was following him around to get insight on how someone could be a pirate and be gentle, considerate and caring with his crew and the life he leads. And then it just ended up falling deeply in love with him. It's so adorable
I really love how they wrote Blackbeard already feeling over the harsher aspects of pirates life, and acting as if he had already transitioned to this point where he's ready to enter a more lighthearted and whimsical period in his life. I can't help thinking about his journey just to this point.
If they get to do all three seasons they're currently hoping for, I think it would make perfect sense for Ed and Izzy to work through this as the attempted re-launch of Blackbeard spectacularly implodes. Some Izzy flashbacks would be great, they could show him realizing in hindsight the times Blackbeard lost his taste for a life of crime. I've been thinking about this a lot, too 👀
That "Shh" from Blackbeard made my heart melt instantly and the moment I know this series will be my fave forever. Taika is so hot and precious, I am falling inlove with him billion times more
The way Ed looks in the mirror making a scary face probbly wondering how could Stede not see him as the legendary monster everyone knows him as. Only then to drop it like *hm I guess I'm not that scary after all, good*
"Do you work for Blackbeard?" "...Never thought about it that way... Yeah. I guess I do work for Blackbeard." Genius double meaning there: Ed is trapped within the confines of his ruthless dread pirate Blackbeard persona, to the point where he feels like he has to maintain this image, can't really let himself relax and just be plain old Edward Teach. So he does, in essence, work for Blackbeard. Everyone works for Blackbeard, but no one works for Ed.
Yknow when Edward introduced himself as Ed-Not-Blackbeard I figured they'd keep Stede clueless for the rest of the episode but the casual, abrupt reveal and his reaction made up for any comedic delay.
I finally watched all the season 1 epeisodes so I could watch season 2 when it premieres - and I LOOOOOVE this show!!!! These two own my whole heart right now
All I’ve seen of this show content/plot is these two and so I saw that they only meet in episode 4 my first response was “wait the whole show isn’t about these two idiots?”
the story’s core is about their relationship BUT it’s also an ensemble comedy !! the creator wanted the first 3 eps to show the rest of the crew and also serve as an act 1 of sorts
to be fair stede abandoning ed was a huge blow but he was dealing with the rejection and taking steps towards healing. izzy's the one who decided to send him into a toxic spiral and make him go hard on the blackbeard/kraken persona with his 'i serve blackbeard, edward better watch his fucking back' threat.
I started this show with no idea of what it was about, but I’m familiar with Blackbeard, so when he said he was Ed I immediately thought EDWARD FUCKIN TEACH HES BLACKBEARD!!!!! I love this show and I’m sad that it ended.
i think ed is completely convinced that lucius is dead, and i think that in season 2 it'll be a huge source of guilt for him, as well as his insurance that no matter how miserable it makes him, he can't come back from being the kraken because he's done something he can never forgive himself for. i share the hope of many that lucius managed to get back on the revenge and is hiding in the secret passageways, aided by jim, frenchi, and fang. (and ivan if he were coming back😭)
@@bridgetb.7965 I fully support this idea too; imagine him feeling so guilty over Lucius' death that even Lucius who planned to get revenge, settled for kicking him in the balls and forgiving him, after watching Ed spiral even worse out of guilt. Lucius even watches him reject Stede out of his guilt and self-deprecation, enough for Lucius to pity him. Even Pete gets disappointed in Blackbeard ofc once he finds out, and Ed begs all of the Revenge crew for forgiveness. Like, "kids I screwed up; I screwed up and nothing I can do will ever change wht I've done, but I'll spend the rest of our time together showing you all how much I regret it and care about all of you. I love you guys." Then Stede hugs him, then the crew joins in. Izzy is hanging upside down beside the deck, above the water watching it all.
