22:14 The door he came in is behind the right thwomp. You can tell because the transition where the screen turns from black to showing the level, the expanding circle starts behind the thwomp. They then just have to teleport the player to the left where the checkpoint is, and then when they go "back through" the door, it's one they had never been through before.

As an astronaut myself I can confidentely answer the question mentioned. If you go out too far in the universe you'll eventually reach the level barrier which will lead to you being out of bounds and respawning at your last savepoint. Thats also how all the alien kidnappings can be explained. They got up the ship, went out of bounds after a while and then just respawned at different locations.

For the checkpoint twice twice, it's because you actually come out of a hidden door on the right side of the screen and then get teleported to the middle. If you watch 22:15 at 0.25x speed you can see it for one or two frames. There's the same troll in the Lazy Nine#Shadekitty collab "Unfortunate level design" (it's at 7:20 in Geek's video "ShadeKitty Is Chris Pratt of TROLLS")

44:10 If you're somewhere on Earth and start walking, perhaps incorporating boats and other vehicles but definitely navigating past all obstacles, then after about 24,900 miles or 40.000 kilometres, you will end up at or near where you started. The surface of the Earth is what is known as "finite unbounded," meaning that even if you can freely travel any (two-dimensional) direction from any point, you can't get infinitely far away from your starting point. It's... at least *possible* that the universe is this kind of shape.

I loved your physics speculations at the end. There are genuine interesting questions about the cosmology and the Big Bang model. The technical details of the theory isn't really that the universe started in a singularity. That's kind of an older popularisation and in physics the common take on that is that some assumptions in Einsteins theory of gravitation breaks down somewhere as we extrapolate the model back. So the idea is that we probably need some other physics theory to supersede it and while there are candidates, and plenty of ideas, there is a lack of experimental data that single out a single theory as of yet. The questions about whether the universe is finite or has an infinite past or whether big bangs without singularities happen once or over and over and whether there can be causes of new big bangs within the patch of the universe we can observe are great questions and open questions. There are actual physics models that have various of those features. There is one type of model that has something called eternal inflation for example. That roughly mean that a patch of space under certain conditions can rapidly grow and grow into a vastly larger space. In some patch of this new vastly larger space inflation can come to an end and locally go on to look like a cooling big bang. The rest of space can keep inflating of course and eventually spawn more and more bubbles turning into local cooling patches with various conditions. I'll stress that this is partially speculative and we don't know that our universe works like that. But it's definitely one of the options on the table. At the end you contemplated whether space and galaxies filling it and so on goes on forever and ever or whether it's finite. You said that neither of those options didn't make any sense. That's fair. Both options hard hard to really wrap your mind around. If space really goes on infinitely well the we really need to deal with real infinities in the universe. There are people who think that is actually paradoxical to the point of not making sense. I'm less certain. But it does bring in some conceptual issues that becomes tricky. However, the universe could definitely be finite. That doesn't really mean that one goes on to an edge and then it stops. Rather one can imagine finite universes that loop back on themselves (in mathematics one studies certain kinds of manifolds to describe spacetimes in Einstein-gravity). In Einstein-gravity there isn't a unique way to define simultaneity so one would have to make a choice of slices of a spacetime where each slice might be called a "now". There are many different ways of doing that. Never the less one might make such an arbitrary choice and then for example space (a 3 dimensional slice of a spacetime with certain conditions) could be a compact space. You sound like you've got some technical degree so let me assume you know some basic uni-level maths. An n-sphere: S(n) can be defined as all points in R^(n+1) with norm 1. S(2) is what we usually call a sphere, S(1) is a circle, S(0) is just the 2 points {-1,1}. A k-torus: T(k)=S(1)x...xS(1), k times; is a k-dimensional space. T(2) is used in some video games where you have a rectangular screen and if you exit on one edge you reenter on the opposite edge. The 3-dimensional sphere S(3) and the 3-dimensional torus T(3) are a compact spaces. They have no boundary. Yet with standard notions of volume and distance they aren't infinite. These are just a few examples. There are plenty of others and classification of all the options is highly non-trivial! The point from the point of view of physics is that such mathematical constructions do make sense and is a possible answer to the question "Does it make sense for a universe to be spatially finite?". The answer is clearly yes.

For the big bang, I think we got the timing wrong for aging certain things. As it stands, carbon dating is a process of detecting certain carbon isotopes. What if we got the rate of which these isotopes become present and that the time of additional isotopes gather take longer and longer like an incremental idle game? It would wholly justify why some of the universe's galaxies are seen as being much older than our predicted age of the universe. It's all about timing. This of course is in reference to some of the discoveries made by the James Webb telescope.

If the universe doesn't go on infinittely, a way to make sense of that is to make it curved back on itself. Much like walking on a globe in a "straight" line will get you back where you started, so too could travelling in one direction in our universe get you back to where you started. Of course, scientists think our universe is nearly flat, so whatever curvature it has is almost imperceptible, making your "walk" quite a long one if true.

If new theories on how the universe works is correct, then my guess is that the big bang is likely when all matter has been shredded into such fine atoms that they start gathering together due to gravity to create a super large mass that is capable of bonding all the atoms back together, which creates a new universe by causing a big bang.

i think the most interesting thing would be, for our universe to collide with another universe that is also having it's own big bang, bur yeah the question of how space goes on infinitely or doesn't is defiantly a big one, it's almost somewhat probable that space is just four dimensional in some way, maybe if you travel far enough in one direction you will end up back where you started, space could be simultaneously shrinking and expanding at the same time, the one thing we know is that we have absolutely no idea how any of it works, and the more progress we think we are making towards figuring out how it works and the more we discover, the more we learn that we knew less then we previously thought we knew, physics act differently when things get super small, I'm assuming the same is probably true when you get super big, maybe our universe is just, bui8lding blocks for a higher plane of existence similar to how atom's have nuclei, electrons and all that, maybe theirs plane of existence that has instead of electrons, protons and neutrons etc, they have, essentially out universes held together to form new kinds of materials, made up of trillions of tiny universes, it's also possible that, if you were to shrink yourself down small enough and slip through the cracks of reality into the quantum realm, you would end up eventually shrinking small enough to end up exactly where you started, maybe the quantum realm is made up of our universe, so nonmatter which direction you travel in time, space, size, you always end up where you started, who knows! I'm defiantly not a quantum time traveler so don't quote me on anything!

42:50 I have a personal theory regarding how the universe exists. Nature abhors a vacuum, right? What if we took that conclusion to the extreme. What if the natural state of things is for there to be a minimum energy state in any given point in the universe. If the total energy of a given point is zero, then quantum fluctuations result in the energy state in that point to rise to that minimum energy state. Or the probability of that occuring is greater than zero.

The "big bang" itself is just the idea that the universe was once really small and dense and hot, and then expanded and cooled into the universe as we know it today. What this questioner (and Carl's answer) is trying to get at is the question, "WHY was the universe once really small and dense and hot?" Carl's answer is rife with common misconceptions about this topic, unfortunately. Our understanding of physics is limited. The common picture of the "big bang singularity," a point of infinite density containing all the matter in the universe, isn't really accurate. That's what you get at the beginning of a certain MODEL of the universe, based on our current (no doubt flawed in some ways) understanding of how spacetime/gravity works. You take Einstein's general theory of relativity, make some simplifying assumptions about the large-scale structure of the universe to arrive at a set of simpler equations called the Friedmann equations, and plug in the fact that we see things in the universe at large enough scale are all moving away from one another, and out of those equations pops a model of how spacetime has evolved in our universe. This model has a "singularity," which is just a fancy word that means "place in an equation where the math breaks down (e.g. dividing by zero or similar)," at a certain time in the past where all of space is condensed down so that everything in the universe is at a distance of zero from everything else. This singularity is NOT REAL - it is a consequence of this particular model, this particular bit of mathematics that we have done, with a (probably) somewhat-flawed theory at its core and a bunch of simplifying assumptions on top of that. In particular, we expect Einstein's general theory of relativity to be incorrect at high levels of energy. We can only create energies of a particular size in the lab; the biggest in the world is the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and even that doesn't even get remotely close to producing the kinds of crazy-high energies that it would take to probe general relativity. But on theoretical grounds (for reasons I won't get into here), at high energies we do expect there to be some violations of general relativity. We have no idea how that would actually work; it's a really thorny problem and probably the greatest unsolved problem in physics (this is why string theory got so popular; it claimed to be a path to solving that problem - didn't really pan out that way though). So imagine rewinding the clock on the universe. In the early universe it's quite hot. As you go back in time, the universe compresses, gets more dense and more hot. Denser and hotter, denser and hotter, until eventually - you get to that point where it's SO hot that it produces those kinds of ridiculously high energies where general relativity breaks down. So we have NO IDEA what happens before that point in the universe's history. And we still have infinite density and temperature to go before we get to that supposed "singularity." So that's why I say it is "not real." So what is the answer to that question, "why was the universe once really small and dense and hot?" The only honest answer is: no one has even the faintest hint of an idea, and we probably will never ever be able to find out, even if we study physics for a million years. C'est la vie.
