Well this is a fun one. What interesting things we can do with 20 pound Propane tanks. I used a different editing technique so do let me know if you like it.

I was wondering how these are made after seeing some for sale at an art show. Now I know why they cost $500 and more. Lots of hard work and fine tuning. You played it beautifully.

That is my favorite percussion instrument you have made so far. Beautiful sound and shape as well. There is a Scottish woodturner on RU-vid named Gary, I can't remember his last name, who has a beautiful transparent painting technique that looks like galaxies. I think that would look really nice on this.

Awesome video. I have a couple old tanks in my scrap pile. I need to make one of these. Question tho'. I'd need some way of carrying it and preferably being able to play it while doing so. Would it damage the sound quality to weld a few loops around the equator for a leather carry strap?
@DIYwithUncleCy
@DIYwithUncleCy 6 лет назад
Because of the way this instrument works anything that puts tension on the shell will dampen the sound (or at least in my experimenting it has). So I can only assume that hanging it from loops on the shell would dampen the resonating chamber. However I have not tried that so do not know for sure. It is pretty much a sit and play instrument. They do strange things compared to a regular drum too, If you set it on a hard surface it dampens and doesn't sound good ,I thought this was due to the opening in the bottom being covered, but when I set one on a carpeted floor or the couch (still covering the opening) they sound fine, weird huh. Still even not being able to carry and play I recommend making one to play they are extremely fun.

Great work man!! Im looking forward to make one for myself. I want to make one on the scale of C major but i dont know the diameter of the notes or the order they should go and im kind of lost there. Can you give me some advice please???
@DIYwithUncleCy
@DIYwithUncleCy 6 лет назад
Jose Antonio Casas The diameter is unimportant. Make 8 same size figures. Cut the top 1\3 of each. Then pick one and begin cutting the slots down and checking it till you have a C (you want this to be a high octave to start from) the longer the slots the lower the note will be. I use an app on my phone to tune with. Once you get the first note pick one next to it and tune the next lower note. I alternate across the first note making playing it very easy. With that bit of an explanation and the video you should be able to do it. Just be careful when cutting the tank.

Hi Uncle Cy. Somebody bought me a tongue drum as a present, but I do not like the color. I am quite an artistic person and wondered if I could paint it myself. I would love to spray it and have some metallic element to the paint graduating into different colors. I thought about maybe spraying it with paint, but I wondered what one you might recommend and whether I need to mask up all the vents on the drum so that the paint does not get inside. Can you give me any advise on this and how to avoid it changing the sound. Many thanks, Elaine.

@gorillaau
@gorillaau 3 года назад
How did you go? I take it that you have tracked down propane tank.
@thomasmartinscott
@thomasmartinscott 3 года назад
@@gorillaau Actually, I bought 4 tanks, but living at 7,600ft up in the mountains, I've been using them as propane tanks. I do walk by them and tap on them, and the pitch tells me how full they are.
@gorillaau
@gorillaau 3 года назад
@@thomasmartinscott I have used that trick myself for larger tanks, those that you can't easily rock. The smaller BBQ size one trick is to pour hot water down a side. The hot water will evaporate off the section that has no liquid gas, leaving a clear line of the liquid gas inside. Caveat: I think LPG as we have is the same.

@mcboomsauce7922
@mcboomsauce7922 5 лет назад
Awesome... Questions The more you cut a tongue, the lower the pitch? The more you Sand a tongue, the higher you can raise a pitch? Tuning the tongues in a star pattern rather than clockwise or counter clockwise is important because every time you tune a tongue it effects the other tongues? Did I get this right?
@DIYwithUncleCy
@DIYwithUncleCy 5 лет назад
The pattern of tuning has little to no effect. I settled on the pattern I used because it is intuitive to use (the notes switch between hands consecutively). But yes longer slots = lower notes and thinner tongues = higher notes.

Is there a way to have 13 tines instead of 9 to make it chromatic? Maybe arranged in the circle of 5ths?
@DIYwithUncleCy
@DIYwithUncleCy 6 лет назад
I have Done one with 12 around the outside plus the one in the middle and tuned it to a chromatic scale. I found it difficult to play, but I am not a musician by any stretch. It would become easier if I played it more and memorized the layout. It was an earlier attempt so the layout of the notes was not as intuitive as the versions I currently make. My favorite ones so far have been scaled for Blues (C major, G major, F major) they sound radical. I have done several in different pentatonic scales as well including a 2 octave version. I will probably play around a bit more with a Chromatic version and use the layout method I am using now to see if it makes it easier to play. Thanks for watching and for the comment/question.
