The main reason this song and band did not go as big as Tesla - they were a bit late to the 80's party. Their first album did not come out until 1990. Their second album came out in 1992 - but their lead singer was massively injured in a stage accident and that put the band on hiatus. By the time he recovered - Grunge had hit...
And hip hop started outselling rock in 1993. And the last number 1 rock song was in 2012. THANKS, GRUNGE. Way to go. Just because Eddie Van Halen scared you off guitar solos, you didn't have to turn to power bar chords turned to 11 the entire song. You chose to sound like the Ramones over Led Zeppelin. Arrrrgh.
Miljenko Matijevic was seriously injured on tour in 1992 during their second album tour (leading to a 4yr gap in album release). He was crushed by a lighting truss, which essentially broke his face and messed up his back. He spent years rehabbing --> came back after the hair band movement. He is currently doing a resurgence of Steelheart. He is BIG in Asia.
they need to bring back 80s music...but ONLY if it is done like it was in the 80s where the artist could actually sing and the musicians could actually play. No auto tune. I graduated HS in 91 so this is the type music I grew up listening to.
What can you say, the 80s were a phenomenal decade and heavy metal was at its peak. Great review and this lead singer along with Steve Perry from Journey were two of the best. You might like the live version of Mother, Father. It is also amazing.
Their first album came out (with this song) came out in 1990. This "80's" genre faded around 93'. Some of the best songs/bands from the genre some of their best came out in 90-93..
Unfortunately they came on the scene as hair metal was being killed by grunge.I also heard (since you mentioned how the voice & guitar meshed so well) that they did something unusual as far as guitar chords to achieve that. Sorry , I'm not a musician so I do not know the correct terminology.
@@CjJohns1776 Steelheart got hit with a triple whammy: 1) As you mentioned, Nirvana came along and released Nevermind in 1991, which pretty much sounded the beginning of the end of the "hair metal" era. 2) There was already a popular backlash against power ballads when "I'll Never Let You Go" was released, especially within the metal community. Anthrax released their (mocking) version of these songs a year later, called "N.F.B." (they claimed to have written it in 5 minutes, on a napkin). 3) Lead singer Miljenko Matijevic was very nearly killed when a 1,000 lb lighting truss fell on him during a concert in 1992. It took about 4 years of therapy before he was able to perform professionally again, and by that time glam rock was well and truly dead. If they'd come along about 5 years earlier (and the stage accident didn't happen right after), it's very possible that Steelheart would be remembered as one of the biggest bands of the hair era. As it is, they're mostly just remembered for Miljenko's vocals and for just this one song.
Let's see if I can keep this short. The best way to refer to him is just call him Mili.. Just as the band was truly getting ready to go big the band broke up. The cause of that was Mili himself and not being able to perform or sing as he had prior. Milo suffered a tragedy.. while on stage he had some stage lighting fall from up high and land on him. He suffered broken bones a broken back and a serious head injury. As he would later find out it actually caused a brain injury as well. He is now in his 50's and still preforms.. but not quite as like he use to.. he can still hit some high notes ..but not quite the powerhouse he once was.
Your friend hit the nail on the head when he said he could see an acoustic version of this. He did "she's gone" , their other big song, with just a piano! Holy shit this man has range!
They did reasonably well for a band that entered the picture in 1990. Not the best time for a band like them to debut. I saw them in 1994 expecting them to not be quite as good as the studio recordings, but they totally delivered 100%. Everyone in the band did.
They were amazing and would have been one of the best bands ever if they didnt come in towards the end of glam / hair metal. When they came in grunge was already taking over. 😔
I'm late to the party but a bit of a fun fact... the lead singer of this band did most of the singing vocals for the movie "Rockstar" starring Mark Wahlberg. I believe he also helped write most of the Steel Dragon songs in the movie as well.
You guys are hilarious. I enjoy listening and watching your outtakes on my generation of metal, the 80"s. It was especially awesome when you checked out my all time favorite band, Cinderella. I'm going to check out if you have anything on Skid Row. Thanks Pit.
He does NOT sound the same! At all! Edit: (or amazing) He hits his note and drops it.... He can't sustain the notes. He flops! Womp womp womp womp! However, Mark Slaughter still sounds the same and is as good as he was and can hold his notes.
@@michaellarocque2926 tf are you talking about? Because I have an opinion about his voice not being "as good" as it once was, implies I didn't get an autograph? How long did it take you to come up with that irrelevant dumbass comment? 🙄
@@drea1976 no need to compare those two. Miljenko got into accident in 1992. not all people who sings very well when they were young still can sing so well until this time. Mili and your idol are different person. remember, Miljenko got into accident way back then. It damaged his health condition too much. Try to Understand bro ok? fucking idiot.
@@drea1976 Then so what if he didn't sustain those notes now like his prime??? Is it A problem?? But he still reach those notes and sing it well nowadays! Unlike you
Miljenko Matijevic is the singers name. And he is a vocal freak!! If you really want to see his range, check out the song She's Gone!! Steel heart actually had quite a few great songs. Favorite one is sticky side down. Standard 80's schtick, but if frickin rocks!
He was also the vocals in the movie Rockstar with Mark Wahlberg if you ever watch the movie the guy that takes over on stage is Myles Kennedy the lead singer of Alter Bridge. Groups like Steelheart we're pushed out of the scene due to groups like Nirvana etc
And how can your boy not like KIX?! One of the best bands to come out of the 80's and still going strong!! Top 5 favorite band!! Hell, where do you think Bret Michaels got his entire look and stage presence?! He stole it from Steve Whitman, kix's lead singer from going to see them live in Boston all the time before Poison got together!
I definitely like you dude I am a Kix extreme fan of them I love so much of their music I've been listening to that group ever since they very first came out I even had them on cassette
@@williamreiser455 hell yeah brother!! The boys definitely didn't achieve the success that they should have, but they still draw pretty big crowds!! And Steve's vocals are still on point!!
There's a video of scaffolding or lighting falling on the singer at there concert almost killed him which was the end of the band around 92. He also voiced mark Wahlberg singing in the movie rock star.
react to she's gone unplugged it's awesome as I have only just heard steelheart for the first time 3 days ago and my mind is blown everytime I hear Miljenko sing. I seriously can't stop listening to this song and she's gone
Great band. It's actually all from the 90s. "Everybody loves Eileen " is another fantastic tune from them. They are still around. I believe they had a album drop in 2017. They still tour today.
Steel heart has always been my all time favorite then led zepplin..they still tour especially in Korea where hes always been a favorite to the koreans, they love him..he still sings great but just can't hit those high notes like he used to..love Mili..xoxo..
Hey man!!, Metal Head here too, I love the "Divine Intervention" album in the back, nice touch, but I can't forget the 80's glam, that was exactly the reason I got into metal music and from there on I escalated to Thrash metal and other heavy genres and the 80's was the peak, the pinnacle of music in all genres, just the best years of my life back in the day and now is great to re-live great moments and memories, get your bud into knowing more bands like this, we'll be there too.
Weedy Guitar Studio this is the perfect explanation as to why they didn’t blow up like Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, etc. they have been around for a while, around ‘84 but their first album was released ‘90, so that was just bad timing. Sad thing.
One of my favorites....... Subject change......i recently was introduced to symphonic metal...NIGHTWISH.....if you have never heard them, you should give a listen...... NIGHTWISH- GHOST LOVE SCORE...WACKEN 2013 OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO
they started around 1989 and it 92 they had and accident that kind of put and end to their rise in stardom.... The single "Mama Don't You Cry" charted No. 1 in many East Asian Countries, including Hong Kong, leading to an Asian tour in September, 1992. Towards the end of their tour of Asia, Steelheart was asked by Slaughter to open for them at a show in Denver, Colorado on Halloween night in 1992. While performing “Dancing in the Fire,” from their “Tangled in Reins” album, Matijevic attempted to climb an unsecured lighting truss, which toppled over and both he and the truss fell to the stage. In attempting to evade it, the truss landed on top of him, crushing him face first into the stage and Matijevic suffered a broken nose, cheekbone, jaw and a twisted spine. Miljenko Matijevic is the lead singer and the voice of marky mark in rock start
if the accident didnt happen, im pretty sure steelheart is still one of the very well known band in this era. if only we could take back time.. we could have demanded the "whoever in charge of the production set of stage" Poor Miljenko.. i still idolize him tho,
Best power ballad ever! I saw them in concert in 90/91. I blame Nirvana and the grunge scenes for killing off 80s metal bands. Todays metal bands songs don’t even compare to 80s guitar riffs, that’s for sure.
Ha! You guys are funny! Speaking of posers, did you guys ever catch the movie Rock Star with Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston? This is the guy who sang the vocal tracks for Mark Wahlberg in the movie.
New to the channel due to this song alone. Funny thing: This guy can still sing like this live. I don't know what kind of steroids he's doing, but it's certainly not anything ending in "bol". lol Edit: Also, if you're not staring at that man's beautiful chest, I don't know what to say. lol. It's awfully pretty.
They would have been bigger but the lead singer had an on stage accident that caused him brain damage and broke his jaw and twisted his spine…the video is on you tube and it’s taken him a very long time to recover but he is still singing again and he can hit those high notes…he has an amazing voice ❤…try Can’t Sop Loving You
They never really stood out because they were NOT an 80's band but released during the dawn of the grunge era. Early 90's more or less around 1993ish. If they had released around '87 they'd be in a better timeframe to be more popular.
You do know the move ROCK STAR WITH MARK WAHLBERG??? That's who did all of the singing and music. As everyone said they hit in 90. Grunge was turning into a big thing. But this song hit the top 10 charts in 6 countries! Sadly, Mil. was on stage at practice. And a whole light truss fell on him. It broke his nose, jaw, spine etc...And it took a long time before he was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. But, they are back. You should listen to more of his stuff. He has a 7 octave range!
Not sure if anyone is still reading comments on this video? I interviewed Mike in 1991- He has more than 5 octaves and can go pretty low. If you want listen to some of his range ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u2PjOgv7B68.html (both voices are his-song about his dad) Also he was known for 'cat fighting' ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CDUdiXXM0LU.html -- I saw him catfight live, he was brilliant (Also this song was titled "Angel Eyes" but Jeff Healey released "Angel Eyes" so they had to settle for "I'll Never Let You Go"
Singer got hit by spotlight in the head broke nose and jaw... Later found out he has brain injury. Band broke up... Thats why their fame was short lived. But now theyve regrouped. Watch she's gone live... Its as if theyre trying to pick up where theyve left off... Still sounds amazing
They came in right as Hip-Hop and Rap hit. So they like another group from Mississippi who covered Mountain's Mississippi Queen. And did it FAR BETTER than they did. You can put Zebra in the same time period.
You need to check out Freddy Curci from a band called Sheriff, and then Alias from the 90's. He has an amazing voice, and maybe even higher register than Milljenko.
Many said that this band is just a one hit wonder because they are late in the 80's glam rock/hair band game (1989) but the band Firehouse in similar genre was also formed in the same year and the got much success.
Awesome band. Miljenko was the best and still is. Hell of a set of lungs. Very nice eye candy as well. They came in in 91 around the time those types of bands were going out. Shameful. A hell of a lot better music than today.
If you thought he hit high notes in this song, you guys need to listen to she's gone, same band but they have an unplugged live version, and he crushes it while showing you a different and deeper range.
Sadly there was a stage accident were part of the stage fell and hit him in the head and brain damage and he lost his vocals to hit them high notes but can still sing good
I've heard that cover. After hearing Steelheart do the original, Dens Gonjalez cover is a total waste of time. There is no comparison. That's like trying to compare someone to Steve Perry.
