I like Steelseries a lot. I'm also danish, so I grew up with their stuff being pushed heavily on the early Scandinavian pro gaming scene, like the Icemat, Steelpad and Qck literally 20+ years ago before they were even called Steelseries. They've innovated with mousepads, keyboards and affordable gaming headsets and definetly had their ups and downs when it comes to quality. Them cutting corners here does not come as a surprise as their products have been very hit and miss for years. I switched to Logitech a few years ago, but i've been looking at some of their stuff cause it seems to be great value as long as you don't buy the flagship keyboards.
The reason for them not including the omnipoint switches everywhere on the keyboard is cost no one will ever use the feature on their function keys and no one wants to pay $20 for useless switches
Personally you can mod a apex pro tkl to be almost the same as the 2023 one for a third of the price so I don’t think I’m gonna buy this keyboard personally if you already have a apex pro tkl don’t buy this one definitely not worth it in my opinion
Big thank you for showing that the switches are different for different keys. I had no idea and didn't see this mentioned in other reviews. That's a deal breaker for me as the switches are the whole reason I was looking at this keyboard. You saved me from making the wrong purchase. Thanks!
I think you should have covered what these keyboards can do within GG. It's absolutely a true deep dive into configuring your own personal keyboard. IMO the old RGB's had a terrible rep for dying out. Love the new RGB.
@@griffsmotorthings you are saying the rgb actually died or got dimmed out on some buttons? For that price? wow.... I got a G.Skill km570 RGB I've had for almost 7 years I got for around $80 it was $100 retail and the fonts and lights are still like new on it. Only problem is the buttons got real shiny on the ones I use the most. and the space bar gets rattly sometimes. but the thing has survived alot of abuse I didn't think RGB dying on a kb was really a thing. Its a shame it wasn't that well received. the only KB G.Skill make now is a $50 65% kb, the km250 which just came out a couple weeks ago. pudding caps and kaihl reds with I think 68 keys including volume control. Its literally blowing away the competition at that price point and of course noone is even talking about it. People deserve these overpriced heaps of junk I guess.
i dont understand why you even want omnipoint switches on the rest of your keyboard. I think the reason why we dont get them on funktion keys and arrow keys are that we dont really use them. I dont use them, its just an excuse to hate on the brand and the products they release. And its not only the omnipoints or the branding that makes this keyboard expensive, its also the build quality. The rubust feeling of the keyboard is very nice and if you got it you know that it aint gonna break, and the nice features that come with the keyboard is also a reason why the price is so high. Dont hate on products you cant afford.
i think its better to have the 2 different switches as the keyboard will be cheaper as im guessing the switches are more expensive that the red switches but i get your point though
2:17 I my HUMBLE opinion I think it is not necessary to have a whole 84 (apex pro tkl doesn't have print screen, scroll lock and pause break button) omnipoint switches. Why do you need them for your arrow keys? Who plays using arrow keys in almost 2023, 99.99999999% of people use them only with youtube. I am even glad they put them only in the 60% area, because the price would be even higher.
You complain about missing omnipoint whatever, but you dont explain what they are and why are they better... think about the fact that not everyone knows the subject in detail
The Apex Pro TKL 2023 features our Omnipoint 2.0 adjustable switches with 11x quicker response and 10x swifter actuation! It has a wider range of Adjustable Actuation points of 0.2-3.8 mm compared to the previous 0.4mm to 3.6mm. This keyboard also features Double actuation, meaning you can program two actions to a single key, depending on how you press it. Along with Quantum 2.0 Dual Wireless connection, so you can connect to devices either by ultra-fast 2.4GHz connection or Bluetooth 5.0 (available for wireless model only). There is no longer the Illumination tab in Engine when you click on your device, instead there is a blue bar at the top of the window when you click on your keyboard in Engine. For more information on how to adjust the illumination on your keyboard go HERE.
I just bought the Apex 9 for about 175$, because I thought that the Apex Pro was too expensive. The wired version goes for around 240 dollars (my country doesn't use dollars, hence the oddly specific numbers). Was that a bad purchase? I haven't recieved it yet so I can still refund it. I am not a professional gamer and barely play shooters. Edit: appearently it is quite a lot more expensive where I live, for some reason.
Thanks for this review. I picked up an Arctis Nova 7X headset and was looking to unify some hardware with a new keyboard and its interesting to see Steelseries still isn't giving customers what they want even though the keyboard space is getting so competitive. Guess I am skipping Steelseries for another 5 years or more, again.
tbh from you i can keep up with like quieter brands and I appreciate your channel a lot. im praying if the Viper Mini wireless comes out I can see your review cause you got no BS.
1:35 Whaaaat? You'd think they'd at least put them on the arrow keys too, but I get why SteelSeries would do that. Would OmniPoint switches be useful on keys like PgUp and PgDown? Probably not right? 🤔
COULDNT agree more with the reviewer. quality and design is a downgrade, should also put omnis on whole kb not just 60% area. also the software needs refinement, the rgb stuff aint so customisable as the previous version of apex pro. and FML in first 30 minutes of use, the lil oled screen on the kb got a white vertical line on screen. heyo steelseries pls recheck your quality checks, dont be like razer...
@@TooMuchTech from what i noticed over a small search on the internet the oled screen was a ''weak'' point since first apex pro. and this bs carried over to the 2023 model.
@@guilhermegms7557 in my opinion previous model feels a lil bit more sturdy.. more quality and design also better... not by huge margin... but new one has better keycaps if u plan to keep the stock... switches are same... cable is detachable compared to the fixed one previous version had. Which was very thick and uncomfortable. Either way u go they are good keyboards... hands down better than trash kbs from razer... i recommend them... to be honest iam fanboy of steelseries when it comes to keyboards... if new one comes.. ill definately buy...other option is the wooting one... just saying. If u feel comfortable giving 200plus euros for keyboard.. then go for it.
@Too Much Tech. You answered your own question. The reason why those "competitive" oriented switches ( magnetic / rapid trigger ) are not present on the entirety of the keyboard is two-fold. 1 ) they are not needed and 2 ) the cost savings of not having to populate the keyboard with additional keys is passed on to the consumer. I just picked the 2023 TKL wired version up for $125 when it was on sale very briefly not long ago. BTW, more manufactures will be introducing magnetic switch based keyboards in 2024. A few videos were recently shared with me and can you say "gasket magnetic thocky volume knob" 3 x real fast? LOL. Good things coming.
the wired cost 240 usd here in Denmark. but im happy with mine, i opgrade it from apex 7 tkl. dont care abut sound, all gamers use headset anyway. but i think the sound is different her 10 month later, mine is quiet, or just put O ring in it if youy have ocd. After 14 days, most people dont care abut design, sound, and all that, its all abaut how it feels in a game in the end.
Yes, it's pretty much all about performance, ergonomics and build quality. Yeah, I get it, if you're spending that much money you want something that looks dapper but after a couple of days it doesn't really matter. And it's not like a Mac that was really designed by top people.
I have both the OG pro tlk feels and better looks better. Nice keyboard to have on desk. The new switches are more responsive. So from gaming POV 2023 is better but everything else OG is nicer
Can someone pls awnser, now that u can't change your lighting on the screen can u change it on your laptop than unconnected it and connect it to your Xbox will it still have the same lighting?
@@Viggen37 yeah i have the original and am happy but it kinda sucks for the people who upgraded for the new switches only to get scammed. good thing i didn't upgrade though :)
I think the omipoint switshes is nice its very smoth, but thats the only reson to get the keyboard, dealbrekers is whey are soldred, and the keyboard is to flimsy and cheap build bout the old and whis new one. i was considerd the old version a while,,but think i buy a keychron K8 pro or Q3 insded..
man completely bashed SteelSeries. And a bunch of "IMO" comments. No diving into what is good for your needs or for you just bashed the new iteration. Wont be back for future reviews lol not sure how it was a review at all.
getting the older one now because there is a massive sale on it and I would love a USB passthrough to connect my keyboard/mouse pad. I am replacing my Apex M800 as the keycaps are desintegrating.
Been waiting for this review. I recently bought the wired version, but had to return it due to the shift keys feeling as if they were rubbing against something, especially the left one. I exchanged it for another one, but haven't even opened the box, because I wanted to hear your opinion of the board. The board does feel lighter and cheaper than I thought it would. But not being a kb enthusiast, it sounded much better, and the keys feel much smoother, than the Corsair K70 tkl I use. I'm also considering the Wooting 60he instead, though I'm wary of having to pay full price up front, but having to wait a couple of months (barring unforseen setbacks) to receive the board. But yeah, this thing's going back to Best Buy tomorrow. 😄
@@onuridvan crazy happy bro just get it you won't notice the difference with the new one and for these that do it's just placebo lol if you're good already it doesn't matter

I was looking at purchasing this keyboard because my old Apex Pro is starting to have issues but knowing that this has two types of switches is a huge downside. And the fact that it's still mostly plastic for about $200 is so disgraceful. I think I'll move away from SteelSeries now completely.
so the keyboard suks.. it resets the actuation time to 1.8 after every sleep/unsleep cycle to 1.8 you can see it on oled screen in keyboard or software if using onboard profile
I got that keyboard and i totaly agree with your review. Whatcher 2-3 more reviews, but yours is absoulte honest and accurate. Its realy great keyboard, but that softwere ... the only way to fix softwere is to not instal it, or uninstal it. I was using Razer keyboard before and i have to say, that i willing to pay razer 50 dolars, just to use thayre softwere on steelseries keyboard.
i got one and i think its worth the overprice as it looks and feels top drawer. this is my 4th keyboard and i know im going to keep collecting. im an illustrator and photographer and its part of my combination art and computer station. its fun and gorgeous and i dig the little oled screen.
About the switches, no one uses arrow keys in modern day gaming (small percentage sure) again same with function keys, they are so high up and hardly used except mainly for mmos and such again small percentage so I am ffine having the main keyboard having only omnipoint switches
Nice review! But it looks more like an opinion on what prices Steelseries should charge for their different models and how much they should be differentiated. Which leaves me a bit confused - one complain is that a lower priced model has inferior RGB (not sure why it is part of this review), another is that this high priced model looks much like a lower priced model. So, not sure if they should differentiate less on more.
