Thanks for the encouragement to do it myself. ive seen other video where people took everything above out to get to the pump and lines . i definitely like your way better
There's a puller for every job. Throw those pickle forks in the trash where they belong. For the gearbox on these super dutys, you need the "Light Truck Pitman Arm Puller". Autozone part # 57170. You can rent it for free.
"don't be afraid to do it by yourself" I'm not afraid, I can tear apart anything on this God green earth. Putting it back together is a whole nother ballgame. 🤪
Everyone told me to take mine to the shop. After your video no way that is a easy install. Shop wanted 950.00 to do it. Now I got my steering box ordered and have 600.00 extra for other upgrades. Thanks bro for the video.
Loosen outside nut first while keeping allen screw from turning. Must have both wrenches on at same time. Allen screw sets the slack. Make small adjustments clockwise to take slack out. Do not tighten all the way. Retighten outside nut to keep allen set screw in place. You can check slack with vehicle off, key on to unlock steering. Good luck
I just bought a project 7.3 powerstroke for 4K only 144k miles lifted up 6in on 35s it has a lot of play in the steering do you think this will help it out
Same man. Did you end up buying? I think I'm gonna replace the tie rods, ball joints, etc up front and then do the steering box after that if there's still a ton of play in the wheel. The bushings on a good majority of the steering linkage on mine look straight shot
i would start with an alignment. If your caster is off, it will make it harder to steer and not quite return to center. But it depends if your truck is stock height or lifted. I have leaf springs and a lift. So I bought some wedges to go under leafs to change caster. It seem to work. An alignment shop would be my first step.
Everything still good with it today? I've been looking at the rock auto units but alot of people are suggesting the red tops for $250. I just need to get the steering tightened up.
I've got a 2000 7.3 and have problems turning at slow speed and or stopped. Replaced the steering pump and it still whines and very hard to turn the wheel. I've bled the lines and it hasn't made a difference. Any ideas?
You can try a shorter Pittman arm. It will give it more leverage. Also you got to remember these trucks were designed with their factory wheel size. Just in case you have larger wheels. Your pump could be weak/old or need replaced. Mine did the same thing. I installed a drop Pittman arm and mine got better. My truck has about a 6 inch lift now. Good luck.
You can go on RockAuto.com and put in your truck. It will give you the part # you need for the steering gear. You can give that info to your parts guy.
Wish I had the answer. I've been through my front end numerous times to try to fix same problem. These trucks are heavy and dont steer like our family cars. I gave up on mine. At least its better than when I first got it (used) with 260k on it. Caster has alot to do with it. I tried different degree shims under my leafs.
I actually just loosen back up on my gearbox screw that sets the slack. When I got it I screwed it in too much to where I had no slack. Which made the steering too sensitive. I guess you have to have a little slack in there
Jack front end up and have someone wiggle each wheel while you look for movement. Could be tie rod ends or/and hubs. Sometimes easier to locate the problem with just one tire off the ground. Good luck.
lift front end. Remove powersteering pump res cap. Turn steering wheel fully to each side slowly with engine off. Continue until you no longer hear air bubbles coming out pump or have someone look as you turn back in forth. Once air is removed you should be good to go. Keep reservoir full.
i originally removed inner fender to get to them. Then after completing swap, I needed to tighten lines after I reinstalled fender. So I trimmed fender back just enough to get wremches on lines. Thats much easier than removing stubborn fender again. I think I mention that at end of vid. Hope that helps
Ben David my lines don’t seem to line up well, I got one in but then that one was in the way of the other line so I took it off to see if that would help and now I can get either of them to go on
