Steinhart’s Excellent homage to the classic Rolex m GMT, ref# 6542 was released in 1954. This first version Rolex GMT was developed by Rolex in conjunction with Pan American Airways for use by its pilots. It featured the now classic Red and Blue bezel made from Bakelite plastic and featured a Big Crown with no crown guards. Steinhart’s version follows similar design cues to the original but with updated materials and technology. It offers impeccable build quality and excellent value to the watch buyer. Swiss made ETA 2893.2 Èlaborè GMT decorated movement, ceramic bezel insert, sapphire crystal front and back, heavy oyster 20mm bracelet a compact 39x13x47mm case size

This is an awesome watch. I bought mine about 2 months ago on Steinhart's excellent jubilee-bracelet and I'm still in the honeymoon-period with this one. Especially when the lume is charged up and I look at it in dusk-like lighting, I just can't stop staring at it. Plus the movement seems pretty well regulated (SW330 in mine). Right now it's running at +1.8 s/day for me, which is quite amazing. Re the dial: That one nearly put me off buying it. I bought it at a Steinhart boutique so I could handle and see the watch before buying. Under the typically bright lights they had there, the dial looked nothing like it does in pictures. It looks, well, faded and kinda weird. But that look you'll only encounter under these special lighting conditions: Under a bright LED-spotlight or in the sun, shining directly onto the dial from above. Even in the sun, if you tilt the watch just slightly, the dial will change to a nice, deep black. Which I think is really cool and the faded effect isn't as pronounced as on their otherwise excellent "Vintage" dive-watch (the one with the old fashioned bezel and explorer dial). On that one, the effect was so pronounced that it did put me off - even though I adore the styling of that watch.

1SaG This watch on the factory Jubilee bracelet is the perfect combo to get. Frankly this Steinhart GMT looks good with the Oyster and straps but especially the Jubilee. You got a well regulated movement. Most the Steinhart’s I have tested are typically -6 to +6 range. The ETA is certainly capable of Chronometer accuracy with attention from a good watchmaker. Plus 1.8 is like a Rolex Superlative Chronometer lol. It’s really the luck of the draw and you lucked out this time. I agree with your assessment about the aged patina on the dial and bezel. I sold several of the vintage Explorer Subs and I severely disliked the overdone sun fading on the dial. They corrected this in the 39mm 3/6/9 Sub special edition that Gnomon offered. That watch was fine perfectly. Check it out if you haven’t already. On this GMT I was very concerned that Steinhart overdid the aged patina but after getting it in hand I saw it was nice and dark with that brownish Rolex Tropical appearance. The red on the bezel is the only thing I wish was different. It’s fading is a bit overdone. The real Rolex Bakelite insert didn’t really fade very much staying a deeper crimson/maroon red. Other than that this a great little GMT homage to the Rolex

@@SPQR-Z As I've alluded to further up, I am lucky in that I live only 40 mins by car from the only independent store that sells Steinharts in Germany. So I could really try them before spending any money. The drawback is that this lead to me buying three of their pieces over the course of two months ... and I'm currently saving up for the fourth. Yikes! ;) But it also permitted me to check this GMT on both the Oyster- and Jubilee-style bracelets. Not sure if I would've opted for the Jubilee had I not seen it "in the flesh" first. The Oyster-band looks great on the watch, but I think I prefer the more playful character the piece gets from sitting on the Jubilee. Just a personal preference. I wonder if the red on the bezel is just down to limitations in manufacturing? Even Rolex' ceramic Pepsi-bezel doesn't have a deep, "crimson" red but looks a little faded or even almost pink to me. Not an expert on ceramic, so I'm only guessing here.

@@1SaG I’ve had this watch for 2 years. ETA 2893-2 which now needs a little regulation….running 15 sec fast. I adore this watch. Mine is on an Oyster.

Just so you know, the SW330 is a Sellita-made clone of the ETA 2893. Elabore is a grade used by both Sellita and ETA.

Nice watch, I am deciding between that one and the Steinhart Explorer II. Best from Spain!!!

JAPD when in doubt buy them both :) The Exp-2 is bigger isn’t it? It is gorgeous in real life. I have had the Rolex 1655 and the Steinhart version really looks like the old Rolex except much bigger. The Ocean 39 GMT vintage is a smaller size, very close to the 6542 and 1655 Rolex so fits my wrist better. Hard choice

Looks great on that CW strap! I wear mine on the optional jubilee. Thanks for the good review- subbed!

Yes really like the C-Ward straps. Very versatile from casual to dress occasions. And that quick spring-bar quick change system is something people have to experience. Still have it on the Steinhart. The Jubilee with this vintage SH GMT is the perfect bracelet combo IMO. This watch looks great on a variety of straps, bands and bracelets. I am mostly a Rolex Fanboy but several micro brands out there are absolutely killing it, Steinhart being one of the top 3. I’m not a dedicated watch channel per say but do have some more watch videos coming up. Rolex, Seiko, Grand Seiko and some other brands that I come across during my watch wheelings and dealings lol

Also, a good watchmaker can definitely regulate an ETA movement and get it down to within 3 seconds per day.

Robert Falconer I’ve owned several Top ETA Chronometer rated movement equipped watches that ran superb within 2 seconds either way. Your right though a good watchmaker with the “touch” at regulation can get even a Standard ETA to run 3 seconds +/-

Just received this amazing time piece. I was super excited to receive it. And when I did.... I didn’t fall in love with it. 😭 it is truly beautiful but for me the 39mm is just too small. I also bought the Ocean One Coca Cola in 42mm and love that size. If anyone is interested in buying the vintage let me know.

Yes O1-39’s will be smallish for some people. It depends on wrist size of course but also preference. I noticed over the years people are wanting more wrist presence and larger diameter watches overall. It’s a trend with younger watch enthusiast. I think with my 7” wrist the watch wears great but then again I’m a old school watch guy. You’ll have no problem selling this watch on, it’s a very popular Steinhart model. I think you’ll like their larger 42mm models. They also wear Big IMO

The bracelet is actually pretty good. It's the clasp that could definitely be better. All things considered, though, this is superb value for money. Assuming one can get past the whole "homage" thing. Personally, I think Steinhart goes enough in their own direction with these pieces, that I consider them more "inspired by" as to perfect "homages". It's like they take the originals and then make all the changes they personally would have liked to see if they were building the original...at a fair price point.

At around $700 bucks it’s a pretty good package of value vs quality, including the bracelet. I think people don’t really understand how expensive and difficult it is to pull together everything it takes to offer an excellent quality Swiss manufactured (for the most part) watch like this Steinhart Vintage GMT and sell it for $700. As a hardcore Rolex guy it took me a long while to warmup to the whole homage thing. I still detest clones of modern Rolex but do feel differently when somebody like Steinhart comes out with a Homage of a vintage Rolex. Weird I know. I especially love the Ocean 39 Vintage homage to the old 3/6/9 Explorer dial 5513 Submariner.

It’s worth it...buy another one. I bought this watch and it’s great! And yes “inspired by” is better stated.

@@SPQR-Z And the great thing is that the Steinhart uses an excellent ETA movement, too, which means that any competent watchmaker can readily service it, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. And given it's using the Elabore ETA movement, it can absolutely be regulated, too.

Steinhart make another 39mm timepiece just like this but with white or gray dial (rare) It sells on eBay for around 2k. The 42mm sells for around $890. Great video BTW.

Interesting, will have to check that one out. Steinhart as a brand has a pretty good fan base and I’ve always found them to sell quite well.

Hey Evan! Fantastic looking watch. I was wondering about the red in pepsi bezel. It seems pink or peach in color and no where close to red. How does it look to you in person?
@SPQR-Z
@SPQR-Z 4 года назад
CDVAK I went and checked the video on my iphone and the bezel color looks pretty close to the actual color in real life. So unfortunately or fortunately depending how you feel about the color shade, yes it does definitely have somewhat of a pinkish/peachy look to it. Especially in stronger light like outdoors on a sunny day. Others times it looks darker. That all said it doesn’t look bad in person. You wish it was darker, more of a crimson or maroon red shade, but knowing that Steinhart was probably going for a faded vintage look on the bezel it’s totally understandable. The blue is perfect and I can definitely live with the red. In person most people will find the overall vintage presentation more than acceptable and in that context the shade of lighter red works. Of course only you can be the final judge.

appreciate the detailed reply! I was kinda of hoping for a darker fade closer to the original bakelite watches. That's what I thought this watch was going for. It seems like the bezel is faded more similar to the post 59 aluminum bezels that often faded pink. I'm still very intrigued in the watch but I really have to decide if I can live with the lighter "faded" bezel.
@SPQR-Z
@SPQR-Z 4 года назад
CDVAK I hear you. I’m a longtime Rolex vintage collector and have directly handled the Bakelite bezel GMTs. Those Bezels did not fade as severe as the later aluminum inserts. They cracked like crazy but did retain there color closer to when they were new. Also there are direct limitations to how you can mix colors with the ceramic material. Even Rolex couldn’t get the colors right on their new Pepsi GMTs. There’s what your trying to achieve color wise vs the limitations of the materials and processes your working with. I had the exact same concerns you are expressing with the bezel on the Steinhart. When I finally saw the watch in real life I was surprised to find that I liked it more than I thought I would. It’s typical Steinhart quality and value. The duplication of the vintage Rolex GMT is not exact nor meant to be. It’s an interpretation more than a copy. It’s a great everyday wear and travel watch, one that you can wear and not fret about too much. It’s not like wearing a $60 grand original. It’s also a readily flippable watch so you would lose little if you decided not to keep it. Good luck with your decision.

I have the watch and the red looks really good and the bezel comes alive depending on the lighting around you. You really need to see it in person.

Is paying import tax on watches optional in the USA?
@SPQR-Z
@SPQR-Z 4 года назад
As long as it’s $800 or less no import duty taxes collected. When you check Steinhart’s website you’ll see two prices. One with VAT added and one without. Outside of EU you don’t have to pay VAT which is 19% so figure the lower price if your in the USA. Shipping is reasonable and very quick from either Steinhart in Germany or Gnomon Steinhart’s big distributor located in Singapore

It is not a standard Steinhart packaging. Only if you run a RU-vid channel. If you don't, the watch is delivered in a very cheap paper box.
