My reaction to Season 1 Episode 23 of Steins;Gate. I absolutely love how everything is coming full circle! Finally we went back to the very beginning of the show and learned what actually happened on that day. While I'm still a little unclear about the exact way we're gonna fix our mistake, knowing that it's possible is all I need to know!

My understanding of everything is that Okabe going through those 3 weeks with everything happening, then failing to save Kurisu and realising he killed her is what caused the Okabe from the future to have the dedication to save her. Initially when he comes out the Time Machine after failing, Mayuri doesn’t slap him across the face and he just goes away, continues with his life but suffers a lot because of what happened. This Okabe is what Steins;Gate 0 is about, so it explains what happens from the point he fails to save Kurisu up until you see him sending the message to his last self when he’s 33. But the key thing is, the Okarin from episode 1 has to actually experience everything in the same way. He has to hear the scream, see Kurisu “dead” and then text Daru which sets off the first d-mail and sets off the chain of events of the first season.

@@noechoprime well in this episode it explicitly says "Okabe from 15 years later" rewatch it. We know Okabe and Mayuri is both 18 yo right now so nothing in this comment would be a spoiler. if you keep pointing it out it will become a spoiler for people reading comments, because they'll think about it more.

To be clear on why future okabe's plan to mistake kurisu for her dead self and "decieve the world" works, it has to do with gaps in Okabe's knowledge. It's a trick he learned in Steins Gate 0 and now has in his arsenal. In simple terms, while Kurisu DID die in the future of present okabe's worldline, the okabe from slightly in the past where he saw her lying on the ground didn't technically KNOW that she was dead, he merely assumed it. Therefore, in order to keep the possibility of future okabe in existence long enough for his message to the past to exist, thereby allowing present Okabe to save her and switch worldlines he only has to make her LOOK dead to his past self, because until she is officially named dead by the police and the past version of future okabe knows it for certainty, there is a window of ambiguity surrounding her existence in regards to His own memories, and therefore reading steiner and the worldline structure, which is what future okabe is counting on. Admittedly it's a bit flimsy on the logic side, but anything regarding time travel often is, and this series actually does a better job than most keeping things straight.
@istvankeri6688

The fake death works, because as long as past Okabe sees her "dead" there, he will send the mail to Daru, which basically makes it so that the events of the series play out exactly as they do normally, just when Okabe changes the worldine back to where Kurisu "died" she isn't actually dead anymore. But for present Okabe to know about that he has to actually kill Kurisu once so that he will be in the worldline where his future self sends back the video, because present Okabe has to kill Kurisu for 0 to happen. So Okabe 0(future Okabe) makes it so that the Suzuha we see as a child at the end of 0 is sent back knowing that the plan has to fail once for Okabe 0 to exist. Basically Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 are a double timelooping attractorfield that inevitably converges into the Steins Gate worldline. Steins;Gate 0 plays out as we know it twice. The first worldine where Suzuha 0 comes from(the Suzuha that's in 0 and 23B) plays out, then Steins;Gate 0 as we know it in the series, where the future Daru sends the video back to Suzuha 0 about Operation Arclight, also from where Okabe 0 sends back the video about Operation Skuld to Steins;Gate present Okabe(let's call him Okabe 2) and also from where future Okabe 0 sends the DRINE back to when the timemachine with Mayuri leaves about the fact that the world can be deceived to present Okabe 0, and from where the Suzuha in Steins;Gate episode 23(let's call her Suzuha 2) comes from. Since Suzuha 2 comes from the 0 worldline, she already knows about Operation Skuld, so she knows that Okabe 2 has to fail once and kill Kurisu for Okabe 0 to exist so that he can send back the video to Okabe 2. After which Okabe 2 goes back and deceives past Okabe, which results in him sending the first Dmail which loops Steins;Gate with the difference of Kurisu no longer being actually dead in the worldline she was supposed to be. And that means that when past Okabe undoes the first Dmail, instead of changing the worldline to Beta like we see the Okabe we follow in Steins;Gate do, the worldline changes into Steins Gate, because now neither Mayuri nor Kurisu are dead so the loop stops. Another important part of this plan is obviously to send back Mayuri 0 and Suzuha 0 to change the worldline to make it possible for Okabe 2 and Okabe 0 to exist in the same worldline. So it is INCREDIBLY confusing and convoluted, and maybe my explanation is a bit hard to follow, but basically Okabe 0 played the biggest game of 5D chess and basically turned both the Alpha and Beta worldlines part of one massive "meta"-attractorfield that can only lead to Steins Gate. So yeah, time trave is complicated.

So Kurisu's death is not set in stone, but "okabe encountering Kurisu's dead boy" is. Also if kurisu lives, then okabe (from ep1) would never have seen her dead body and would never have sent "her getting stabbed" message to Daru and the world line would never have changed to Alpha. so the 3 weeks Okabe and kurisu spent, will be wiped out from his memories as they never have happened. So to avoid that Okabe has to see Kurisu's dead body and send the message so that 3 weeks would actually happen. All in all, Okabes resading steiner is a blessing as he remembers 100% of other world line but when he switches to a new one, he remembers nothing about the new one. So he asks others what happened in the new world line.

The title of episode one is the perfect choice of words. The prologue of the beginning and the end, episode 2 is the beginning and episode 24 is the end as events on episodes 1 and 23 are both happening at the same time.

Are you planning to ever touch the Visual Novel? If not i suggest you react to these parts somewhere from RU-vid, these are the 2 most dark and fucked up scene, yet also really well written that didn't get adapted for obvious reasons. - Bad Ending "Irreversible Reboot" : Takes place after episode 16 in the Anime, where Okabe chooses to not undo the D-mail that will cause suzuha forget the memory about his father and the lab members. - Endless Apoptosis "Time Leap Nae" : Takes place after episode 20 in Anime, alternate scene will happen if you choose to meet Nae after Mr Braun shot himself in the head instead of immediately send D-mail.
