Steinway vs Fazioli - Piano Sound Comparison

Comparison between two different pianos:
- Steinway & Sons D 274 Concert Grand (274 cm) - Germany
- Fazioli F278 (278 cm) - Italy
Sound was recorded during 16th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw Symphony Concert Hall. Microphone's settings and position of pianos on the stage is the same for each recording.
Samples of Frederic Chopin pieces are played by different pianists! Please take into consideration different style of playing which may affect the tone.
I suggest watching on 1080p for the best sound quality.
Your comments are welcome.

I've played many Steinway concert grands and several Bosendorfers, but the first time I played a Fazioli was a revelation. I was no longer playing a piano. It was as if I had a full symphony orchestra under my fingers. Intoxicating !!

I would suggest also looking into August Forster whose bass tone I have felt cannot be beaten. For me (mainly describing forte playing, though these analogies may be extrapolated in either direction), playing the Fazioli is liking having "Super Soakers" at one's fingertips whereas the August Forster is like "kitchen faucets", having a pleasant yet not too strident level of turbulence as well as "air" and "breath" (I consider both to be "bright"). I meanwhile find Steinways, Bosendorfers, Schimmels and some others to be rather "laminar" but with different "hole sizes" and "water pressures", even when voiced more brightly.

John Mitchell i think the fazioli is rivaled by the shigeru Kawai sk-ex concert grand which is fabulous. And the sound is same tone and clarity than the Fazioli. But cost 225k+ taxes..Steinway is more chamber piano. The Kawai sk-ex and Fazioli are best in concert with symphonic orchestra. You should try the Kawai. I just heard, never played the real one but i have the es8 portable piano with the sk-ex samples and i was able to customize it to get it close to the real one. It sounds like the Fazioli, at least very close for a portable piano it is remarkable. There is video comparing the Fazioli and Kawai and except the difference in recording volume they sounds identical. Look also leva dudaite nocturne 20 you will understand what i mean.

When you have the two finest piano companies in the world going head to head I think it comes down to the individual piano's on the day. On some days steinway will win because that particular piano is special, on some days Fazioli will win for the same reason. Today, I think Fazioli edged this one out. I will say this though, Steinway is the sound we all grew up hearing.. because of that, when we hear it, it's like getting a hug from an old friend, where as a Fazioli is like getting a hug from a woman you are newly infatuated with. Both experiences are beautiful and comforting in their own unique way.

I agree entirely with you. Fazioli is more neutral than Steinway that has this sound we have in 5million discs. It’s very reassuring for a pianist. Fazioli is less sparkly in the upper range, but it sings like no others. Steinway often has dull midrange, but it’s a great performance piano. Fazioli as Bosendorfer are in my opinion more interesting for private and intimate playing.

Although I don't like Steinway as a company, I have to admit they still make one of the best pianos in the world. I prefer Fazioli, but to be fair Steinway sounds fabulous and it's really matter of taste. It's even hard to overcome the inflation of "being used to hear", because majority of us are used to hearing Steinway and this actually somehow imprints an idea in us, how we expect piano to sound. Steinway succeeded in making itself a benchmark, that's why it's difficult for other brands, they need to differ somehow and as Steinway does nothing wrong, we are basically talking just pure emotions. Also, when I first touched Fazioli in my life, it was like magic. When I first touched Steinway it was like "wow, finally I have a chance to touch that famous Steinway" but it didn't feel so special. Fazioli took me to different dimension, while the best description of my feelings from Steinway is: "it really works, the haptic response is great, nothing to dislike" - but nothing to be blown away. It's benchmark, you don't get blown away by them. In the end, it takes master pianist to make Steinway or Fazioli sound to their best. I just enjoyed Fazioli more.

what’s wrong with steinway as a company?
@geuros
@geuros 3 года назад
@@pqiojsqdklnads3861 I had some experience with them several years ago, their behaviour towards potential customers wasn't that great really - a director of one school of music wanted to buy a concert piano for the school, and while Steinway wanted first to pay in advance before they would even let him to visit their piano factory, Fazioli himself walked him through his, spent whole afternoon with him, showed every single piano with his own commentary, it was a bit different. But Steinway changed since then, now they're totally fine, I just don't like monopolies.

@@geuros No they haven't entirely changed, they're very proud. i am looking for a A or B model and no longer than two weeks ago i talked with steinway NY and while they were nice in giving me the information on inventory and prices. they're certainly arrogant and think customers have to chase and run after them, no the other way round. The manager kept telling me how they loan their pianos to the tonight's show or lady gaga which i absolutely never watch and do not like these people are of zero interest to me (it was a turn off when he said that). Still i would say they were professional, straightforward and frank so i would still say it was a good interaction. Especially there is none of the salesman talk from regional Steinway dealers but that's because the factory does not negotiate prices but local dealers do on their floor inventory. The company makes you feel much more secure in the process, they do not try to lure you, whereas the regional Steinway galleries are privately owned and you can expect a pushy salesman pitch, chasing you. A whole lot friendlier than car salesman though.

I had a Steinway b when I first got it out of the box it did not sound so great but I had my piano tech work the action and it needed a lot of work.when it was finally done it was a beautiful piano but it needed quite a bit of work to get where it needed to be with the action and sound. Since that time I traded my Steinway b for fazioli 278. I can only tell you that I can play that piano much faster and clearer than I could ever on my Steinway. I play contemporary and classical jazz. And also classical music. I never could play the revolutionary etude as crisp as I could on my fazioli. I would have to say the Steinway has a Richer bass sound, in some ways. It is geared more for medium speed lower classical piece. Whereas the fazioli has a better mid-to-high range sound much more clear. But overall the build quality of the fazioli is far Superior

Steinway's intention is for a rich sound for concert rooms. Fazioli is crispier because it has more transient and less harmonics. Fazioli's sound is brighter, not necessarily powerful. If you put a Fazioli in a concert room, or play it with a huge orchestra, it fades away, while Steinway's sound remains still. Every piano has a diferente purpose. For clarity, precision and nuances, I'd prefer a Yamaha.
@lhommeaudacieux
@lhommeaudacieux 2 года назад
@@LuisKolodin I get Steinway and Fazioli, but for me Yamaha is not at all in their league. The action can be heavy even though it leans too much into clarity while sacrificing the rich subharmonies that lend power and soul to any piece. It sounds like a factory product. Highly precise but not particularly moving. The Fazioli also leans into this direction but it’s action and ease of play is simply unmatched and such a joy to play. So the Fazioli and Steinway are each stronger than the other in a particular way but Yamaha falls short in nearly every considerable way, maybe short of computer sampling.

I was fortunate to play on both many times as a young budding conservatory and competition pianist. I liken a (good) Steinway to a Stradavarius, usually not the best at first. Can be tempermental, moody, and you have to learn how to extract the best sound. But when you find the sweet spot----it was all worth it! Fazioli's are more like precision Yamaha's--they are clear, beautiful, calculated, and predictable with an emphasis on precision. I prefer each for different styles of music and will alost always choose a Fazioli if little rehersal or not up to snuff technician is available. Given these are different pianists you have chosen to compare, I think the difference is less about the piano and more about the person playing on it. I will say the pianist on the Steinway brought more to offer my ears.

Fazioli is on another level, clarity is the real difference, the era has come whereby the piano is greater than the pianist! @ 3:53, it sounds like the Steinway is exploding with sound, while the Fazioli sounds like it’s going to snap under all those notes… Steinway has a robust sound between hammer & attack, and from a mixing standpoint, has fuller notes, almost like all the frequencies are all active, they’ll ring nicely with an orchestra. Fazioli sounds like it attacks just for the transient and almost immediately decays with no other frequencies active. Sounds really clean, but almost that it takes away from the “piano” itself
@danhhughes
@danhhughes Год назад
Fair points, but I will say the comparison in this passage is poor as there is SUCH a difference in execution from the two pianists of the double arpeggios in 6ths(/5ths). The pianist on the Steinway plays each individaual note with a tremendous amount of clarity and strength, which yields a much more substantial sound (“exploding with sound”). Can’t say the same of the pianist on the Fazioli - the notes are lacking the individual strength to collectively produce the same roar out of the instrument.

Full disclosure...I own an F228 and have played an F278 and Hamburg B and D. I play mostly chamber music and the FAZIOLI 228 is ideal for it as it does not overpower the other instruments. Sometimes i miss the growliness of the bass on a Hamburg Steinway and would probably choose it if I was playing a concerto, but there is a wonderful responsiveness, clarity, and nuance in the FAZIOLI. the Steinway sounds like the notes have a more sharper quicker sustain on the notes. where the fazioli sounds more full and the notes fatter and richer. when the song is slower the fazioli sounds so rich and full, the Steinway sounds nicer during the quicker movements as the rich bass fades quicker, enough so the notes dont blend into each other. the fazioli in the beginning had the best rolling arpeggios that wonderfully blended together, but when the bass tones keys were getting slammed in the latter fast movements they felt a bit much. my opinion the Steinway has more versatility its balanced and is slightly a better option. but the faziolo if matched with the right piece, suited to its very full rich tones the Steinway could not compare the fazioli would blow it away with its abundance of tones.

Yes, individual piano. But I think Faziolis are closer to sounding consistent with one another than Steinways which vary a lot. This is from a piano competition. I've seen the same pianist go from a Steinway to a Shigeru Kawai to a Yamaha CFX to a Fazioli from one competition to another. It may be based on just trying different pianos or, more likely, they liked a particular piano in a competition regardless of the name on the fallboard. I know I love some Steinway Ds and not others, same with Yamaha CFXs. I don't get to hear Faziolis much or Shigerus, but I like some Kawais more than others, same models.

Steinway basses seem to have more dynamics. But the precise placement of the microphones, the necessarily different position of the pianos in the room, all this can change the game. Moreover, if you compare two identical Steinways, they will not give the same sound either...

Fazioli is better for Bach, Mozart or pieces requiring more fingerwork and speed. The downside is there’s not much depth of tone especially down the bottom end of the piano. Steinway is more suited to Beethoven or 20th century pieces which require a bit of grunt. The hammer strike is more obvious and because the bass reverberates more, it may muddy the middle register a bit. Personally I’d pick the Fazioli if the piece was more ‘light and airy’ but the Steinway for anything else.

Both are great pianos. No doubt the Fazioli sounds great in soft and lyrical passages and the Steinway shines in forte passages. In the end, the choice is a matter of taste.

Agreed. I personally prefer the Fazioli, but certainly not on the basis of this kind of comparison. Here it sounds like someone deeply appreciative of the Steinway played those passages, then someone who did not care for the Fazioli or had not mastered it played those passages. An unfair comparison.

Fazioli's sound is brighter, while Steinway's powerful. Usually people get confused with it... the more transient one piano has, it may seem to be louder, but that doesn't mean the sound is rich. This is more noticeable in large concert rooms, played with large orchestras.

Steinway has heavier and more solid tone, a little more tonal color and texture. Fazioli has some floating and lightweight quility. And it has smoother, clearer tone, with more nuances between all the dynamics and project with broader yet tender sonority.

From a listener point of view I prefer the Steinway for most pieces. The Fazioli is brilliant and from a pianist it seems easier to play and more possibilities of interpretation. Fazioli founder, is both a mechanical engineer and pianist and has implemented newer technology. However Steinway has been around for much longer, (1853) so one can be sure these newer manufacturers, like Fazioli and Kawai and Chinese Hailun learned a lot from "reverse" engineering Steinways. Also note, most of the commenters who say Fazioli the best, not all, have names that end in a vowel. Lots of great pianos, pianists, we all are richer for it.

The Fazioli Is good more full more silky in my opinion but extremely muddy maybe because of the resonance and the mic sounding distorted because it cant capture all those fine neuances. I bet in real it would sound much more pleasing to the ear I can just imagine. Its just the same as listening to recorded classical concerts, I used to do that. But then when I saw one for real i was so amazed how much better it sounded the feeling atmosphere everything one cant capture on tape. In that concert the pianist was playing on a Shigeru Kawai so not Steinway or Fazioli. Back to the topic! You can just hear how much better the Fazioli resonates. Im a bit split to be honest both are simply amazing grandpianoes and I guess everyone have a different taste for whats pleasing to their ears and I am yet to play a Fazioli, Ive played the Model D. I used to work as a pianotuner and technician beeing teached by some of the most reknown professionals in my country. And I also know from my own personal experience noone told me this, just from working with a couple hundred pianoes that the tuning and temperament have alot to say on the resonance as well.

This is an impossible comparison when I think that the 12 Steinways I’ve tried in showrooms, halls & theatres have sounded unique in the same way that a Stradivarius violin is not like any other ‘Strad’. I don’t know Fazioli but it sounds danged good on this RU-vid video. Are both pianos recorded in the same acoustic space? The Fazioli sounds as if the mic is a bit closer to the strings than the Steinway, thus giving the effect of more presence to the sound. Anyway they sound equally great here!

I'm surprised as to how cluttered and compressed the Steinway is. The Faz is much more detailed. Its like listening to an old analog recording vs a very high end digital recording. Something not shown in this video, but I heard in other videos is how the tonal color is inconsistent between notes. This was especially noticeable on a Bosedorfer compared to the Fazioli.

@ericastier1646

You're quite right, the Steinway sound is compressed mechanically, just like an electric guitar amplifier produces a fatter tone except it is done in the electrical amplifier tubes whereas in the Steinway piano it happens mechanically and acoustically, but the principle is the same. The more free to resonate a sound is the more it will be a colorless pure sinusoidal tone with only the fondamental and no harmonics. The more compressed and constrained the resonnance is (intentionally by way of mechanical means in the piano design) the less of a sinewave it will be and will have more harmonic content (colors). Timber is a slightly difference thing which is how a natural material resonates (different types of wood +geometries). This means Steinway design compressed the sound to get more color and more non fondamental resonance. This comes with a signature sound recognizable but is also more variable in each instrument. This usually also does not scale well across the dynamic range. Usually the color fade suddently in p or pp and the fff can be harsh on Steinways. Fazioli is more natural and will have better linear dynamics all the way from ppp to fff but the tone will have less color and will be thinner.

@@ericastier1646 Thanks for your comments. I didn't really think about why I was hearing what I was hearing but it makes sense. It makes you wonder how each performs against other instruments in a mix. Would the Faz sound too delicate with a full orchestra, or even with a rock and roll band. Or does its cleaner sound help it sit in the pocket, but yet be easily distinguishable in the mix of instruments. As a solo instrument, it is exquisite.

@@Daveinet I am glad you liked my reply, the questions your ask yourself are relevant. There is one gentlememan''s comment a jazz player who wrote that he owned a Steinway B and after a lot ot work having it regulated to his liking it was better and then upgraded to a Faziolli. He said the action on the Steinway was too hard even after being regulated, and that he was able to play much faster music on the fazioli and the action was more precise. This mechanical difference will influence how music is played. Actually i am convinced that modern pianos have ruined the classical music composition process and are the reason no good classical music was produced in the 20th century after WWI. It is Ravel who said that Mason & Hamlin are better suited to music composition because of very gradual and precise dynamics and action (and lighter touch i assume). The Steinway is not, it is more a concert showcase piano. Very few people can improvise on a Steinway because the instrument requires such a high level of athleticism and energy from the performer that you cannot be in a quiet relaxed inspired state of mind to compose with it. It is too demanding to play physically and mentally. Jazz pianists do improvise on Steinway but honestly, i see it more as playing small riffs that that they re-use and know how to transpose, it's not classical style improvisation. At the same time, the Steinways do a great job for performance. In the 19th century pianist always meant composer as well, i think that the way the instrument evolved has changed that.

Steinway still punches projects slightly better. It's a full one. Fazioli lovely more female. But the new Bechsteins might take them both. Also MASON & HAMLIN !damnit
@ΠολυτροποςΟδυσσέυς
The action weight differentiates in treble and bass on Steinway pianos which makes the treble more expressive and the bass more powerful. Other than the manor of action I would say that Fazioli is superior in any other ways, the usage of better material and better craftsmanship likewise

I love the sound of the Fazioli piano. And the truth is that I am sick of the Steinway sound, since I think it is the most mainstream sound of all. On the other hand, the Fazioli, with its velvety sound, and that balance that does not tire the ear, since it does not weigh too much in the bass sounds. Honestly, the Steiways muddy and do not help clarify the notes and passages of the composers. Now I'm discovering nuances that I didn't before, since Fazioli is an excellent "translator" when you rush it, and doesn't blur the mix.

Unfortunatelly we can see clearly that are different pianists playing the same parts. Fazioli pianist appears to me to use more the sustain (sostenuto) pedal, and didn't play each note with same care as Steinway pianist (he/she lets some notes carelessly played on Fazioli instrumento). Also there's a difference between the microphone adjust on both pianos. But is a good video anyway, that confirms what I feel: Fazioli and Bösendorfer are pianos more brillant than Steinway, but this last one has the sound more uniform, it sounds from bottom to top notes and you say that it is a unique instrument. Fazioli sounds like two (with dense graves and middle, strange top notes) and Bösendorfer like three instruments (bottow is very "dense", middle is magnificent, and top is so brillant that sometimes appears to another instrument. I love them all, anyway!...

One of the things that I've heard is, the responce on the action of a Fazioli piano is superior . . . I guess it's up to the individual, you would have compare them in person, next to each other, the sound reproduction on a 'PC' cannot compare to a live performance.

"superior responde action"... I'd say Fazioli action is TOO LIGHT and lacks the control of other piano's heavier mechanics.

@@LuisKolodin And that's your opinion, like I said "It's up to the individual" - I've never played a Fazioli or a Bosendorfer for that matter . . . to each his own. I've played alot of wonderful Steinways but, never one that just completely bowled me 'over' . . . and no two are ever completely alike. Back in the day when 'Penny Owsley' was the authorized dealership, (I stopped by on occasion) they had about ten (10) 8'11' Concert Grands next to each other, (all great pianos) but, ONE stood out from all the rest!
