Stella's understanding is lacking regarding what the term "soul" actually means and its unavoidable implications. It is not a "thing" living inside another "thing" a body as sense based imagination suggests, but rather the soul is literally the ACT of the body. What makes a body a particular thing. It is the FORM of the body ...where we get our common word "information". We see all around us , stuff that is differently arranged into trees and lakes and water (a substance) and houses and cars etc. In short, as Aquinas showed us, matter in different forms. We have free wills and minds that can grasp universal truths because our soul is rational and free. So .. a soul is a basic metaphysical principle that combines with matter as the key to our intelligibility and human freedom. The act of the body as Aristotle, the father of modern science and realism showed. Its not magic. Its philosophical lucidity. And we know the types of souls by their powers manifest in living things. There are plants and animals and rational animals with rational souls. Modern quantum physics confirms this non physicalist analysis by the way.
