Stella Splendens - Medieval Song feat. Nieves Hidalgo

Vocals by Nieves Hidalgo, Ibrahim Charaf and Ila M, oud by Ido Romano. This is a reworking of a version I had made over two years ago. Much of the reworking focused on emphasising the Iberian nature of this piece, with the song being from the Iberian peninsula in the 1300's. Whilst most renditions employ a generic medieval sound with anachronistic modern Western European delivery, it is known that medieval styles of singing in Europe were far more melismatic, ornamented, and resembled current Meditteranean or Middle-Eastern styles rather than the commonly used form of singing that arose from the Renaissance onwards.
As it is known that the English and Germans sang in such a manner up until the 1200's when the style would begin dying out, it is almost unimaginable that Spain, with centuries of Islamic influence, would not have had similar forms of singing, hence why I brought on the extremely talented Nieves Hidalgo to sing this. Nieves comes from a flamenco background, and unlike oversimplifications that suggest flamenco is a wholly Roma or Arabic form, historical data clearly shows that flamenco is a product of a much wider context that once applied to all of Europe, and I believe this vocal style to therefore be the most continuous with more ancient Iberian musical practices.
This song is part of the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, a 14th century manuscript from Catalonia containing a number of devotional songs such as this one, meant for dancing.
Lyrics in Latin:
Stella splendens in monte ut solis radium miraculis serrato exaudi populum.
Concurrunt universi gaudentes populi
divites et egeni grandes et parvuli
ipsum ingrediuntur ut cernunt oculi
et inde revertuntur gracijis repleti.
Principes et magnates extirpe regia
saeculi potestates obtenta venia
peccaminum proclamant tundentes pectora
poplite flexo clamant hic: Ave Maria.
Prelati et barones comites incliti
religiosi omnes atque presbyteri
milites mercatores cives marinari
burgenses piscatores praemiantur ibi.
Rustici aratores nec non notarii
advocati scultores cuncti ligni
fabri sartores et sutores nec non lanifici
artifices et omnes gratulantur ibi.
Translation in English:
Resplendent star on the mountain like a sunbeam
Miracles from Montserrat, hear the people.
From all around they rally, rejoicing,
Rich and poor, young and old,
They assemble here to see with their own eyes,
And return from it filled with grace.
(Refrain)
Rulers and magnates of royal stripew,
The world's mighty, having obtained indulgence
For their sin, they cry out and beating their breast
They kneel and cry thus: Ave Maria.
Prelates and barons, famous counts,
All kinds of monks and yet priests,
Soldiers, merchants, citizens, sailors,
Burgers and fishermen are recompensed here.
Peasants, ploughmen and also scribes,
Advocates, stone-masons and all carpenters,
Tailors and shoemakers, and weavers as well,
All kinds of craftsmen rejoice here.

That is of course not to say that the singing styles would have been exactly like that of Flamenco, only that, in relative terms, Flamenco might be their nearest relative today. This song is part of the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, a 14th century manuscript from Catalonia containing a number of devotional songs such as this one, meant for dancing. Getting chills listening to this. Arguably the most SPANISH version of this song and definitely the most unique and historically informed performance of it. Congratulor vos!!! Mrs. Hidalgo's flamenco background and the very "middle eastern" sound gave this an authenticity from the soil of Iberia lacking in other versions.

Any plans for the Cantigas de Santa Maria? As an iberian I'm loving this...much more than "the voices of angels" interpretations you normally find. Ok, I know the Cantigas are much older and from a different part of the iberian peninsula, but even so I would really like to see them discussed on what they would sound like as opposed to the generic medieval you speak of (and also taking into account that these songs where all supposed to be something you danced to, so the very lively interpretations make a lot of sense IMHO)

Yo I HAVE A REQUEST Farya Faraji Im a big fan of your music and I was wondering if you could perhaps make a video of some old Punjabi Sikh warrior hymns, there are many great ones out there like "Deh Shiva" I noticed that you haven't made a single Punjabi song and it would be very nice to see you create a song like "Deh Shiva" in your style please consider it, your video will explode in popularity amongst the Punjabi Sikh community as our history gets very little recognition and or appreciation here in the west, we have had some of the greatest most honourable bravest warriors and battles in our history like the famous Battle of Chamkaur where 40 Sikhs fought 1 million Mughal soldiers or the battle of Saraghari where 21 Sikhs fought 10,000 Afghans! Forget the 300 Spartans, these are the real bravest warriors of history, so please consider it since our community is dying for some new historical music thank you! Love your Music!

This is much more to my taste than the fantasy image of medieval European music. - which makes sense: I listen to Asian and Middle Eastern classical and folk musics all the time. This has the kind of passionate, acid-in-the-throat feeling that a Jalal Chandio recording does.

There's this video dedicated to the general style of Medieval European singing, how it was melismatic and its melismatic nature depended partially on microtonal inflection: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hxcH7S2BaiQ.htmlsi=2_E6LhjTZCywzUlU And this video entirely dedicated to microtonality itself: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M19RlTOx2gM.htmlsi=2qsNzM4qaOKS2QtU My other videos in the Epic Talking playlist also broaden the subject, hope it'll help!

I'm from Andalusia. When I was a child (in the 1970s) my grandparents sang flamenco. And they sound very different from post-Camarón singers of today, like Nieves Hidalgo. Listen to the oldest flamenco recordings to see the big difference for yourself. IMO the vocal style of Nieves Hidalgo does not fit in the Llivre Vermell. Not because it is "too much oriental" but because it is too much modern for XIV century pilgrims. In fact, it is too much modern even for my grandparents.

iberian nature = reaggaeton beat?
@faryafaraji
@faryafaraji 3 месяца назад
If you're unfamiliar with world music, then you would only be able to associate this beat with reggaeton indeed. If you have a minimal amount of knowledge anout world music, you would know that this is a beat pattern found across many human cultures. Much of Greek folk music is entirely centered around this beat. Muslim Sufis in Anatolia have been entering spiritual trances for over a thousand years using this beat. It's a foundational beat of traditional Balkanic dances, and constitutes one of the basic aspects of Khorasani folk epic poetry of Iran. And in the Arabic musical system of drum patterns called Usul, this drum pattern is called Malfoof. It's a central component of Arabic musical systems and is also found in the Flamenco tradition.
