28:00 Game forces you to choose jump drive manually because it is one of the Unbidden triggers. This is what makes technologies marked as dangerous, actually dangerous. You might obtain this tech by just fighting fallen empire(s) and scanning their ship debris 10 times. Since you made no active decision to research jump drive, game wants you to make the decision to use it or not.
@RobBCactive
@RobBCactive 3 года назад
But the actual trigger is having researched it, not using it. It's also possible for players to obtain the Psi jump drives from the shroud. The FE have jump drives, Zarqlan's Pilgrims come with Psi drives. In 3.0 Dick although the crisis is not meant to be influenced by tech, the Unbidden can arrive early in the late game if these drives were researched, which might be very challenging if you use an early end game year.

Great tutorials! I learned so much in so little time! @ColorFade Gaming If I may add one thing: At 50:40 you say, there is no way of removing a singel ship from a fleet. But there is: The button right next to the split fleet. There you can transfer one or more ships to a new fleet by selecting them from a list.

Hey Colorsfade, Commented on one of your videos before. Tried out as many of these tips and tricks you showed, and my God, my game experience was so great. Trade is booming and protected, planet names include E, M, F, etc. for efficiency, anomalies are put to the side for exploration, and I've got my C-K-A's and Cr-K-A's ready for an enemy with shields and energy weapons. Now I'm the farthest I've ever been, and I'm actually encountering a late game crisis.

Amazing guide, I wish I got to watch something like this earlier. I can already see the merge button is gonna be a massive quality of life change. I generally come up with a new fleet composition every play through, and at the moment running a very similar set up as yours, difference being I put the 5 destroyers on artillery to escort the battleships reason being they drop like flies late game on picket range, they also has one large weapon slot to provide some additional artillery fire, and I send cruisers in picket range pretty much exclusively with missiles and small weapons, together with a corvette swarm, they clear enemy small ships very fast. Half of the Battleships will be on line computer with carrier setup, they are the pd and helping landing missiles with strike crafts. Its the most effective I have so far, but Im pretty sure next run is gonna be different. When fleet building being such an in depth system, I do not understand the mono fleet battleship spam mentality, but hey everyone has a way to enjoy a single player game!

Fleet composition is the thing I've been experimenting around with, while I have long since figured out ship design and specialization. Using ship component specialization technique I managed to obliterate the Scourge (after a longggg painful war) and then when the fallen empire declared war against me I bashed them and out of pure luck they managed to keep only 1 system. I also stole there dark matter tech and I am now the most advanced empire in the entire galaxy.

You have some of the best focused tutorials out there, such as this one on ships--with very clear and informative explanations. I also have enjoyed your play-throughs and learn a lot from them since you take the time to explain your reasoning. CF. Once again another great guide video. Hands down you make the best I've seen so far. See a lot of noise with other's approach. The biggest things you do right are taking your time and being while not exhaustive, usefully complete. Information in the Stellaris wiki is there, but sometimes very diffuse. Couple of things I found to note: When ships are in-mid upgrade you might find you can't design a new class. Always remember to mouse over the grayed out save box though and they'll be the red x's that tell you why you can't save - this is important to remember everywhere and all the time in the game. I think the carrier AI seems good for offense/self-defense of battleships+ The flak/pd explanation was pretty helpful I'm to understand that there's no impact on how you put shields/armor down in the boxes - shields are always the outer layer, armor next, then hull? Same with weapons I guess, though I put Kinetic first, then Energy - too attack shields then armor. Probably just important to fill the boxes to best to keep straight what's doing what, but now how the game works right? KG.
@ColorsFadeGaming
@ColorsFadeGaming 4 года назад
Yes, when it comes to laying down shields/armor in the boxes, ordering doesn't matter because shields always light-up outside the armor layer. One thing I kind of wanted to go over in the guide, but started to feel like it was getting bulky, was to get down into the meta of how I handle Combat AI computers and Kinetic/Energy loadouts. I try very hard to set things up so that Kinetic Weapons fire first in battle, and take down shields, and then energy weapons fire later in battle, when shields are presumably gone. And so there's a combination of Combat AI, Hull Sections, Weapons, and Weapon Range that makes that all happen (again, presumably, because it's kind of impossible to know for sure). Weapon Range is kind of the key indicator. If you have Alpha Strike weapons fire at 150 distance, and Kinetic fire at 80, and Energy/Plasma at 50, then you can kind of assume that the Kinetic Weapons are going to do more damage to shields since they will fire sooner. At least, that's my theory. So I might just have to do a separate video on that. Because I think players would get something out of that. Appreciate your kind words so much K.G. Thank you.
@KG-1
@KG-1 4 года назад
@@ColorsFadeGaming I'm playing with downsized ships-amazing space battles--Icen System Scale and Beauty combination and wondering if that was the right choice - hard to see the ship battles as clearly this way. I think your weapon range approach seems as reasonable approach as any, when we don't really know for sure how things work. On your video: the stuff on refitting and cuing ship classes to your fleets was helpful - haven't had big enough fleets yet. My games have been more peaceful and cooperative so far. One suggestion for a future guide would be a more detailed look at pop management: resettlement, the tiers, promotion-demotion, ect. I'm finding that early you don't want to put the gene facility down first, because of how it hobbles early planet production - the things with 1 extra job work ok early though.
@ColorsFadeGaming
@ColorsFadeGaming 4 года назад
A pop management guide would be good. I just wish I wasn't so frustrated by what Stellaris does with pop management. It has some of the worst pop management tools. I have a feeling if I made a guide, I'd end up cursing a lot :) But I do appreciate the suggestion. I will give it some thought!

Actually in 2.7 THERE IS a way to detach single ships. There's a button on the fleet top right with a detach tool tip. Clicking gives a selection of which ships to detach. You can actually use this to rotate out damaged ships to return to ship yard before merging in replacements on standby

You can actually remove a single type of ship from a fleet by double clicking the icon of the ship in the window in the left side (when the fleet is selected) and it'll actually take out all of those ships out and be a separate fleet, the only issue will be if you only need some you would still need to take out all then split to the number you want but in the very least you don't have to split all the other ships

Theoretically you *can* mathematically figure out the most effective way to accomplish any goal with ships in any situation. Notice the key part of that sentence "-in any situation." That means players will have to recalculate the most effective way to accomplish any goal with ships every single time a situation changes. It's true; you *could* calculate the most optimal way of doing things, but life is way to short, and I'm lazy. However, I do encourage players of any strategy game with any mechanic to get an estimate of how many of something a player will need to accomplish a goal. It's for this reason no one can give one correct answer of the most optimal way of creating a fleet composition.
@Wulvena
@Wulvena 4 года назад
Very excellent video. Personally I dispise the fleet manager window, if your deep in enemy territory your ships we ill be picked off by starbases, or roaming ships, the problem is that if the fleet order can and will use all available shipyards regardless of location and can require years for it to reach its destination. Until paradox tweaks it and allows for dictating what paths to take, and which shipyards to use avoid it like the plague. One other minor thing of note to understand for new fleet commanders in stellaris is ship speed, some of the admirals you can get give you a boost to sub light speed, which is great, but with smaller fleet command limits you may have multiple fleets headed out to the same target make sure that the fleet leading the pack is your slowest one to unsure they all arrive at the same time. Also multiple fleets Do Not share the bonuses of 1 admiral, if you want them to have a bonus you have to assign each one an admiral.
@ColorsFadeGaming
@ColorsFadeGaming 4 года назад
Wulvena - after the 2.6 update, ships are supposed to basically "jump" directly to the system your fleet is in, bypassing the actual travel through hostile systems. However, it's still not perfect from what I can tell. But it has improved.

As an additional note, for RP purposes I use a name initials conventions, for example a torpedo corvette with distruptor and heavy shield will be called Thomas Paul Sullivan-class corvette, T for torpedo, P for penetration and S for shields, it sounds nice to have a similar convention for ship classes as some real world navies, I use random name generators for that purpose

You can take one ship out of a fleet, just use the transfer button to the right of the split button. its much simpler, you pick the ship(s) you want out of the fleet. its much better then making your one fleet into 10 trying to get one ship.

Generally speaking for ship naming I usually use Naruto characters or clan names for each ship and role. Its usually always the same for my naming schemes. And I usually name them like this - corvettes are almost always going to be named after secondary or supporting characters, destroyers after antagonists, cruisers after secondary/other characters, battleships after main/secondary characters, titans and colossus are usually a mix of all three depending but usually I go with titans being Jiraiya- or Killer Bee-Class and Colossus weapons are almost always named Otsutsuki. _Corvettes_ For corvettes I tend to stick to two kinds in one fleet and they are usually the Interceptor and Missile Boat. Picket ship role I usually leave to my destroyers. I use 10-15 of each. Interceptor: Kage-Class (10/15) Missile Boat: Himawari-Class (10/15) _Destoryers_ For destroyers I make three different roles but only use two of each in one fleet. One picket, one artillery and interceptor hulls and one Gunship and picket ship hulls. I tend to go with the gunship/picket more than picket for both hulls. I tend to go with about 5 of each. Artillery/Interceptor: Momochi-Class (5) Gunship/Picket: Haku-Class (5) Picket Ship: Yakushi-Class (5) _Cruisers_ For cruisers I tend to make three types and use them all in one fleet. I like to go with only artillery, a torpedo boat, and a hangar combo. I usually go with 2 of each one in one fleet. Artillery w/ Broadside Hull: Hyuga-Class (2) Broadside/Hangar/Broadside: Taka-Class (2) Torpedo w/ Gunship Hull: Inuzuka-Class (2) _Battleships_ For battleships I make three different kinds and fill them up until the command cap is reached for the fleet, any number of combination. Spinal/Artillery/Artillery: Uzumaki-Class Hangar/Carrier/Broadside: Aburame-Class Broadside: Akimichi-Class I also have reasons for naming these specifically like this too :)

ships are destroyed when their hull points = 0, as some weapons bypass shields and / or armour. Also the auto-upgrade does not work for special components such as jump drive, psi jump drive or computers, dark matter shields / power plants and dragon scale armour. You have to manually update the ship design for these items

When it comes to fleet composition I find that all Battleships works great. There are several reason for this. First is repairs are free but rebuilding cost alloys. Because they are tanks they don't die very often as they can warp out when low on HP more reliably than smaller ships. Plus you add Regen Hull on them and they don't need to go back to Starbases to heal up between fights meaning they can stay on the front line. I find that I often take very few loses compared to enemy forces meaning they have to spend a lot of money to replace them while i just have to wait a short while for my ships to heal. Also Mixed fleets don't work the way people think they do. My X Guns often rip apart the enemy's large ships and then mop up the smaller ships. The screen of hard to hit ships in the fleet don't make much difference as shots seem to target whatever they want in the enemy fleet. Thus mixed fleet doesn't really get the benefit from screening that most people think they do. That said there is a way to get the benefits that most want when they do mixed fleets. You simply have dedicated fleets and manually move them around. For example have a fleet of corvettes in front of a fleet of battleships and when the enemy attacks they will engage the corvettes first. I've done quite a bit of testing on this and it is very effective at creating a screen for your big ships. Personally it's too much micromanagement so I rarely use the tactic. The only time I ever did was in a Mod which added an endgame Crisis with ships that could one shot Battle ships. Making a Mix of Corvettes and Battleship fleets did little to slow them down. But a fleet of pure corvettes in front of a fleet of Battleships gave the Battleships enough time to fire off several shots and take out the enemy fleet. No increase in tech or numbers in the fleet. Simply 2 Mixed fleets vs 2 Specialized fleets against the same foe where one was a total wipe and the other was loss of about 1/2 the fleet in corvettes.

this is such an incredible/invaluable review. Thank you. A few questions: Which tech is needed to improve ships sensors so that you can see the enemies ship weapon/shields? Do listening posts do this? How many do you need? How do you interpret the fleet battle screen (or battle summary) if you dont have the sensors to see an enemy ship ahead of time, to then create more custom fleets?

Thanks for this tutorial CFG! From this tutorial, one this that strikes me is why build mixed fleets at all from a ship modification PoV is isolating a particular ship is such a pain. Would fleets of a single ship composition would be better? In this case, the single ship design fleets would be manoeuvred as if a single Mega-Fleet, which incorporated all of the ship types needed. I presume the answer is that you want the different ship types/sizes to work in a co-ordinated way and that's why you build mixed fleets. Is this correct or do single ship design fleets work just as well as mixed fleets when you send a set of fleets (of single ship designs) that are equivalent to the mixed fleets towards a target?
@ColorsFadeGaming
@ColorsFadeGaming 3 года назад
Here is my answer to that: I built mixed fleets for two different reasons, and it really comes down to the point in time of the game (early, mid, or late). Late game is the simplest: I build fleets comprised of Battleships and Corvettes. This is because Battleships have huge amounts of hit points and giant bow weapons that do massive Alpha Strike damage. These are ideal against end-game Crisis and Fallen Empires. However, Battleships make easy targets, so I also add several dozen Corvettes, because Corvettes are the most evasive ships you can have. You can get their evasion really high by the end-game. Thus, they work like a screen for my Battleships, as the enemy is wasting it's huge Alpha Strikes on my Corvettes. If they can manage to hit the Corvette, they'll kill it, but it is MUCH easier replaced than a Battleship; takes way less time and money. Now, early to mid-game: What I basically do is not destroy any of my ships. As you progress through tech, your FLEET CAPACITY will get bigger, so you can add more ships. I build the new hulls, add them to the fleets, and I let them attrition over time. You start the game with Corvettes, and your first upgrade is a Destroyer. They have crappy evasion but double the hit points. Only the Corvette has good evasion. So I start mixing in Destroyers because they have double the hit points and will overall make your fleet stronger, but I don't make a ton of these unless I need them. Cruisers are next. Same deal: double the hit points of Destroyers and can mount a few more weapons. I build these as soon as I have the tech and treat them like a Battleship role (stay at a distance and fire the long range weapons). At this point my fleets have Corvettes, Destroyers, and Cruisers in them, and the Corvettes act like the screen. Once I get Battleships, I add those to the fleets as fleet capacity allows. Ships attrition over time, so eventually these fleets *may* evolve into all Corvette and Battleship fleets. If they don't, I may split off the Destroyers and Cruisers and gather them into a separate "harasser" fleet. At that point I'm where I want to be, with big fleets that are like 20 Battleships and 70 Corvettes. And once I get Titans I'll swap out a couple Corvettes for the Titan ship. The biggest thing here is the screen of the Corvettes. It keeps the Battleships from taking so many hits while causing the enemy to waste their big guns on small, evasive ships. I know some folks play with only Corvette fleets (Corvette Swarm they call it). I've done that too, but my experience has taught me that if I have the time and materials to build them, the Battleships are worth having for their long-range Alpha Strike capabilities. Especially if you have a Juggernaut with the +40% to ally range on it; you can then Alpha Strike enemies and wipe out entire fleets before they even have a chance to engage your Corvettes. Your fleets can walk out of these battles unscathed.

I suspect the reason it does not automatically upgrade to the jump drive is because using the jump drive is a decision you have to make at the risk of causing a particular type of end game crisis

Funny to see it the opposite way as in elite its the energy weapons that do damage to shields and kinetic damaging armor and hull. it always made sense to me but now i dont know what to believe anymore xD luckily i read through the tooltips first because the first time i saw the words energy and kinetic i automatically thought of a layout and balance like in ED. Endless space aswell iirc.

Random awesome thing you can do if you become the crisis and hit lvl 2 on it you can get menacing corvettes put a good swarm cpu on there and autocannons with afterburners and you have a near 100% evasion stat I got mine to 115% without even trying and these things are really fun to use and really hard to hit early and mid game
