Here's a quick guide on what different weapons do in game. There are a lot of different loadouts you can try in stellaris, so it can be a bit confusing for new players. Hopefully this will help simplify the weapon system in game!

What the game was intended: Switch out guided weapon when enemy has point defence. What actually happens :Nah, Just Mass more missiles & fighters to overwhelm them.

I like to combine corvettes with torpedoes and corvettes with swarm missiles. Swarmmis can overwhelm point-defence to protect torps. This tactic is called saturation attack and was used by the soviet navy during cold war

I made a giant swarm of phased disruptor corvettes with nothing but armor and a can-do attitude. They seemed pretty good against the Contingency.

When i use missiles I use a combination of swarmers and torpedoes each on different ships. The idea is that the swarm missles plus my fighters can keep point defenses occupied so my torpedos can get though.

Excellent, please Sir can we have more? 😁😁 I hope you researched this from authoritative sources because a clear explanation is nice, but you mentioned some key details missing from most guides. I bought a Stellaris bundle last year and stopped playing because it was too difficult to find clear tutorials. Most are done by famous players who have played so much they forget what catches a beginner out. Frankly I considered making a fresh eye view on learning the game, far more focused without overwhelming detail about DLC and old versions.

Now, I have a lot of play time and early fleets mix guided, point defence with anti-shield and a 2 anti-armour 1 anti-shield ship. The point is I want to exploit AI failure to counter every weapon type. Also I have specialised fleets, with fast swarms arriving as reinforcements to boost the artillery/carrier fleet as it's screening forces are thinning out. Rapid movement with admirals, light fleets to wage economic warfare whilst avoiding main battle vs doom stacks allows winning the war even if you lose every major battle. Later when I have hangar & cruiser, amoebae flagellae are boss until type III hangar craft are available. The AI likes point defence but not FLAK so high evasion craft can be very effective. Later I do use direct hull, but you need a lot of them and go arc emitter, proton launcher with a little long range null void beam to make the proton launchers more effective. You must go all in anti-hull, the high damage soon removes some ships, whilst good evasion, shields and armour keep your fleet at near full damage output. If the AI does refit to go for tanky crystal reinforced hulls dropping armour and shield, it's very expensive to do but then you simply refit vis upgrade to a more mainstream weapons layout which has bonus v hull. A major concern for me is the AE and crisis ships, so I like to be able to deploy hangar, long range but a second wave of fast swarm of evasive CTs. That allows long range units increased fire rate, but in the main battle high evasion craft and CT do massive damage with fresh craft. That reduces ship losses and the sheer speed of the rapid fleets without cruisers or heavier ships increases the chances of catching an enemy fleet with reinforcements whilst engaged with a heavy long range with point defence fleet. The long range fleets are good for taking out bases with zero losses. In main battle, mostly their CT/DD are lost but they are cheap to replace. Of course late game facing spinal mounts, you will lose cruisers and battleships in key battles, so going into war with resource stockpiles allows rapid replacement and wear down the AE or crisis faction, whilst you uptech and build specialised counters to the known enemy.

if you have like 62 shot of arc emitter at once, you will always have oneshot(always work)

I always thought swarmers put out extra missiles per volley, so enough could overload the AA.

Pretty sure its both. More missiles and smaller payloads. Tooltip doesn't tell us either way though.

pd is actually pretty trash. 1 pd slot can only counter 1 missile slot and putting pd on ships reduces their dmg output so significantly that its not worh it. such fleets still lose overall, it just takes a little longer. same with strikecraft but its a ecen harder L cause yozu need about 3 flaks for 1 hangar. as much as i like my fully outfited ships, its way better to leave the pd slots empty.
