Love it! I want to use the insulated garage doors with the insulated glass panels as a patio door verses the traditional sliding patio door…. Aside from the higher cost- any other thoughts that I should consider?
Question: have you ever used the material you cut out for a window, hinged it and installed it so that it can be closed to make a stealth window and for security. And then add a frame on the inside to install glass into so that you can live in it and open the metal cover to see out the window. But close it when you go to sleep or leave for a while so no one can get in or see in? Also, where are you? It is really helpful for people who might want to buy from you to have some idea where your yard is so they know whether shipping would be prohibitive or not.
Could a reefer can of this type be built into a residential unit, in the way that "standard" shipping containers can, or would there be constraints/problems inherent in the construction of reefers that would preclude doing that?
Hi, I’m located in the Calgary area and have an ex-reefer that I’ve moved over beside my shop. I plan on using it as a tool crib. I need to install a side door to connect with the shop. The side door needs to be rodent proof as I’m tired of mice destroying my tools. Does your company provide a supply and install in this area. If so, please reach out so we can discuss pricing, etc. Thanks for the informative video. Reed
Would a refer style be easier for residential conversion over standard ribbed containers? I know you would have to put battens for utilities gap and attachment of drywall as you do on ribbed containers which one would have the best R factor ?
Hi Kip. The biggest problem with using reefer units in container home builds is getting them structurally engineered. If the home you're looking to build is a single container, non permitted structure in a rural area and you're not too fussy about interior finish, using an ex-reefer is totally the way to go. A paint job on the inside/outside, accepting the interior finish for what it is, and piping in your electrical (surface mount) is by far the cheapest way to make a livable space in a sea can.
Wouldn't want to cut more than an 8ft (10ft max) hole in a reefer. No easy way to fasten a structural header like 40's. Probably want the 53s sitting on a concrete pad as well.
Hi! I’m in the US about 100 miles from New York City. Do you have any recommendations on where and how to buy a non working reefer? Love the insights!!!
Thank you Brian. Finding containers anywhere on the planet right now is difficult with the global shortage. Normally, there should be many used 20' and 40' working and non-working reefers around New York. It's a huge hub. If you are looking for 53' ex-reefers, these are common for rail lines such as CN and CP to own. These will be more commonly source from Chicago or even Montreal if you're further North.
Container prices fluctuate with the market and by region. Typically insulated containers are marginally more expensive than non-insulated units making them a great blank canvas for modification jobs.
