DIY - STEP BY STEP, on a LT 17B.
Great useful RV Upgrade / Modification!
If you have a Coleman RV/Travel Trailer, you need this. (And for many other RV like Dutchman Brands.)
Sometimes called struts, shocks, or even gas openers, these things will make dealing with RV door much easier.
If you have RV cabinet doors that open upwards, YOU NEED THIS UPGRADE / modification.
They even help keep your doors closed while driving down the road.
Everyone likes to talk about how much they dislike the flopping cabinet doors. Other people like to comment on how they LOVE their cabinet door struts.
But I haven't found any videos on installing them. Is it as easy as it looks?
Well sort of...
Really good tip for the Coleman / Dutchman RVs
----
90% of what we buy for the RV, comes from Amazon. The rest is usually from Walmart or Harbor Freight.
I would post Amazon links but they are typically VERY long and they change quite often. If the seller changes one small detail, the link completely changes. Amazon is also bad about offering many versions of the same product, and constantly changing the links.
If you will do an Amazon search for RV Cabinet Door Struts, you will go right to them.
We are traveling in a one of a kind Coleman 17B. The 17B is the lowest priced RV in the market for its size. I tend to think of the 17B as a starter kit that owners can personalize to fit their own needs and tastes. Virtually every one is a “one of a kind” project. We have completed over 50 upgrades or modifications on ours.

I put mine in about 2 months ago, and yeah I could have used this video since I got no instructions. However I did get them in. Although I put mine in the opposite you did and they still work. By opposite I put the one end at the top of the frame inside and the other end at near bottom of the door panel. I think I will swap the direction, they do work. Although mine are more out of the way.

@@funinourrv you’re welcome, it’s funny I’ve had pop-ups and my parents had an old open road RV back in the day, it’s sweet having my own camper and making it mine but there’s so much still to learn. You guys have been a huge help.

You forgot your percentages and weight ratings. 20 to 30% down from top hinge. 50 to 66% for strut length. 10 Newtons per kilogram of door weight.
@funinourrv
@funinourrv 5 месяцев назад
Good to know. Unfortunately we would have to add the strut weight to the door. It might actually weigh more than the door. Does that matter? With the weight of the strut, the door might weigh 1 kg. So I guess, if we wanted to be able to accelerate it 1 meter per kg squared, and the distance it needs to travel is about 30 cm, we would require about 3 N. Since the average male can lift / push around 250 N, I think we will be OK.

I am very sorry I didn't reply sooner. We just went on a trip with our 17b. We went to The Davis Mountains (Texas) State park. It is an amazing place. Unfortunately there is no internet or cell phones, at all. I am serious. It is like we traveled to 1987. We will have a video soon.

You are not the first to ask this. I have tried to post links but it is not a good solution. Virtually everything we use, we get on Amazon. It is rare that something doesn't come from there. This causes problems, with links, for two reasons. 1. Amazon links are a thousand characters long. 2. Sellers on Amazon are constantly making changes to their products or price. The slightest change generates a new link. Amazon links that worked a month ago, will probably not work today. I have tried a few times to provide a link, but then I end up getting a comment of, "Your link doesn't work." I try to tell everyone where I purchased a device or product, especially when I do go somewhere like Harbor Freight, and not Amazon,

As shown in the video, both types of struts seem to work well with just two screws. There just doesn't appear to be much pressure on the door or strut. I will watch it and if it EVER seems ro be coming loose, I will put the the brace for the third screw. to be honest, I will probably do it anyway, as soon as I can. Why wait.

I accidently bought the 100N struts and WAYYYY too much pressure. The 50-60N would be ideal. I believe 80N is too much
@funinourrv
@funinourrv 4 месяца назад
That is a good point. I am guessing that the "N" stands for Newtons? I mentioned how the first set I bought was too heavy. You are right about the 100 being too much. I settled for 80, and they work quite well but 60 might have been better, especially on the smaller cabinets. Thanks.

@funinourrv
@funinourrv Год назад
@@timarney-br4bc Yes. The 7 inch struts lifts 18 lb. The 10 inch are 22.5 lb. You don't need that much and it is harder to work with. Amazon had dozens of types of gas struts. You might find some different versions. Just make sure you get the 7 inch size. The 10 inch just will not fit on the smaller cabinets.
