Please subscribe! It costs you nothing, but means everything to RU-vid Content Creators. We will soon also be offering RV cooking recipes. Lets face it, cooking good meals on a two burner RV stove, is almost like tent camping. We will show you nice meals you can make with two pans and possibly a microwave. (As much as we like them, we can't eat hamburgers or hot dogs for EVERY meal. ) Many of these recipes will come from my 32 years as a firefighter, and the meals we have shared at the fire station. We bought the Coleman 17R because we didn’t need bunk beds and the larger bathroom also has a nice closet in it. We also upgraded the tires to premium rated tires and used the original ones for spares.
I think they could’ve splurged a little bit and put a little sink in the bathroom. I don’t know why they left that out altogether. That’s something you really need.
You are not the first person to comment about it. I think that you might have to remember that every detail the manufacturer does adds $1000 of dollars to the price. This is a budget RV. In fact, I like to think of it as a kit for people who are interested in doing lots of stuff to it. If you look at small RV with lavatories in the bathroom, you will see an enormous difference in price. Not only that but, in my mind, there is little difference in having the sink in the bathroom, or three feet away. I also have to point out that there is hardly enough room in the bathroom to do what need to be done. I can't imagine having a lavatory in there too. My wife and I also use the shower head to wash our hands in the bathroom, all the time. Thanks for your comment.
I will say that through the years we have learned not to use those add-on handles to pull both the screen and outer door closed together , but it works well to pull the screen door closed, if you need them both shut , you really should be pulling the outer door handle, as it does take a bit of effort, and it will wear on the screen frame and the cheap handle over time and will break.
Thank you we have just bought the 2024 version it’s very similar I found this video helpful. The radio is now behind the dinette. It is a removable Bluetooth one, and I haven’t figured out how to power it on yet. I’m not sure if it’s charging properly. It does come with a tv now.
Yes, that is the down side to this. The Dinette does actually make a good bed, but since there are two bunk beds. We made the choice to see which we liked. To be honest we haven't had the chance to try to out enough to say for sure.
Yes it does, but why? There are just two speakers in the RV. The year after this they simply gave a Bluetooth speaker to everyone. I think that they quit even doing this the next year. RV Storage space is in short supply. Why take out a chunk of it for a radio. Couldn't they have just mounted the radio UNDER the cabinet?
It isn't "waterproof". Very few things are. It is covered by the plastic box, but the bottom of it is open. The buss bars under your RV are completely waterproof. Neither are electrical connections under your hood. Water gets everywhere. It is no big deal. Yes. I think there is an inline fuse.
We have done something like 15 trips and thousands of miles. A few or our trips have been over 2000 miles each. I have to say that it is holding up well. No major problems. There were a couple of minor trim issues, but the dealership fixed them right away. After two years, if I was starting over, the only thing I would do differently would be to get the 17R instead of the 17B. Having said that, our recent modification of moving the dinette seat looks like it might accomplish the same thing, but we haven't tried it out yet. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RWmdLUmEkrg.html
Sorry to hear that. I just looked on Amazon and saw several that do come with such stuff. Here are the Jacks I got. Everything you need for $69. www.amazon.com/Trailer-Stabilizer-Leveling-mounting-Hardware/dp/B00M6D4QFY?ref_=ast_sto_dp
Hello, I'm thinking about buying the 17R Coleman. What do you think about it and if you had it to do over, would you buy another Coleman? And thank you for your service to our country. I was in the Navy 50 years ago. Great videos!
Thanks for your comment. We have two videos on the 17B compared to the 17R. For just two people, the 17r might be better. If we had it to do over, we would get the 17r. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mC6LCIveBoc.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bA5KswgjjIY.html
BTW: When you pull the old switch down I see four wires. But when you connect the new switch you connect three wires??? where the wires connect was most important to me as I am installing a switch in an RV with a new hot water tank and my 1999 camper never had a switch on the hot water other than the breaker.
Ours is LP too. The photo might be misleading, but I connected 4 wires. my two switches were identical except for the color. Someone suggested to me that the best thing to do in situations like this is to take a photo of the old switch before you disconnect it. unfortunately, if i understand you correctly you are installing a new switch where there wasn't one. I don't know how to advise you on that. Your heater might not be set up to turn off the light once the gas lights. I don't know how that might work for you.
I might switch the radio for a nicer one with blue tooth. My friend at Sony and could get me one under $80. I have to ask, is it not better to buy a simpler higher quality RV from a less mass production company like Scamp without extras for $16,000? Or less for a smaller 13 foot or so Taylor coach? I could see this for $11,000-12,000. Hows the overall structure compared to a fiber glass or other coach as mentioned? I’d be happier without the plumbing. In many ways. Having a cassette toilet, not dealing with the 💩
Thanks for your comment. The Radio that came with my camper had Blue Tooth. One of my biggest issues with the radio was the cabinet space it took up. RVs have so little storage space to begin with. The 17b only costs around $13,900. It is what you are comfortable with. Everything is a compromise. I like the space with the 17b compared to a 13 footer. You be the one to tell my wife to use, a Cassette. She wants full hookups now. My wife and I van or topper camped many years. It worked OK. But we are not doing that again. I don't know for sure, but I would bet that the Scamp or the Taylor doesn't come with a spare tire, or tongue jack etc. We love our 17B. It is a palace compared to what we have had in the past, but we are already looking at buying a 25ft Forest River Surveyor.
I am glad you like it. I have to say, it isn't difficult at all. You can spend more time and money, but a 17b it is a cheap RV. If you want more instructions, I suggest you check out the Camping Loop video on it. He has a little more step by step than I do, but he had some construction issues with his RV to fix.
As I mentioned briefly on the video, the hardest part is removing the "Quadrex" screws. A real Quadrex screw driver would help, but the screws are sometimes in a odd angle that makes it had to get a good hold on them. A Phillips just slips out. Other then that, it is easy.
I am thinking of doing the same thing in my 17B. Wondering though, did you fill in the holes in the floor from the screws you took out? And did you attach the bench to studs in the walls?
These are great questions. Thanks for asking! I just did this three days ago. I am thinking about putting a little silicone in the holes in the floor. I might get some grey caulk to do this, but regular clear silicone might work just as well, if not better. To be truthful, the three holes are so small I am not in a big hurry yet to do anything. First I secured the bench into the new position by screwing it to the bench that was not moved. I figured that if it was sturdy enough, already . I also screwed it to the floor. I did not find studs to use. In fact they are hard to locate on an RV. I used screws that would for sure go into the wall, but short enough that there was no chance it would touch the outside wall. I am guessing that this would be a bad thing to happen. By the time it was attached to the other bench and the floor, it felt pretty solid, even though it only had four screws attaching it to the wall. (Three in the top piece and one in the vertical piece.) I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask more questions.
@funinourrv thanks for the answers! I have used clear silicone in my house, I think it would work just fine. As long as there's no kids bouncing around on the relocated bench, screwing it into the wall might not be necessary.
Yes. I pre-drilled every hole. If you look closely you might see a moment when I am doing that. I am a firm believer in pre-drilling especially when dealing with cabinets and cheap wood. Always pre-drill.
Best outside hose sprayer is to attach a male fitting to the low point drain and connect a garden hose....pressurized when you are city or pump connected.
Yes. I was always doing the backing, or pulling away, and my wife was doing the connecting or lifting the tongue off the hitch. For that reason I told her that I didn't really see a need for the power jack. My wife disagreed. We got the jack.
Thanks for your comment. I typically don't do product links because virtually EVERYTHING we get is from Amazon, and they change their links often. If we do get something that isn't from Amazon, then was just purchased at Harbor Freight or Walmart.
Do you recommend this unit? We found a Jayco 17bh for $2000.00 more. We’re retired and realize it’s just for sleeping and eating. Is the fireplace the only heating, how long will it run on the battery. One more thing . How big is the refrigerator? Does it have a separate top freezer? And will it run on propane and electric. Between the heater and refrigerator it seems the battery would go dead in one day. I love your tips. Phil
Do you recommend this unit? - Yes. If you are comfortable with the idea that this is a "kit" and you will save $1000s by doing the work yourself. We found a Jayco 17bh for $2000.00 more. It depends upon what you mean by "More". Coleman 17Bs can be purchased for a little over $12K to over $15K. We’re retired and realize it’s just for sleeping and eating. - If it is really just for the two of you, i highlu recommend getting a 17R instead. - Yes, the fireplace is the only heating, but we have found it to be adequate if plugged into service. - The Refrigerator will run for about a day on the battery. I don't think the heater will run on the battery. The separate freezer on the fridge will hold three ice cube trays. Check out our videos on the 17R, and the upgrades we have made. We have not spent a great deal of money on upgrades. half of them are things you will need to get even if you bought the Jayco. (Spare tire, power tongue jack, front stabilizers, mirror, mattress, vent covers, etc.) Remember, the dealer will offer you a good deal, perhaps cheaper, and then try to add $1000 in extras you don't need. Compare sales contracts, very carefully..
We went beach fishing there today and had zero issues with mosquitoes. But SETX has had a lot of rain recently, so the mosquitos have been relentless across the entire area. This is the worst they have been in a long time. Last year was the complete opposite.
Did you have much wind today? i have found that wind and sun on the beach will help some. But when we were there no amount of wind would keep them off. It was unbelievable.
I will guess that it might be an issue, but we haven't had a real problem. I can imagine it not wanting to turn easilly IF you set the bar really tight. The theory is that you want the trailer to not want to easily sway. You are not trying to make it stiff and unable to turn. When we first got it, I set the bar so you could feel, and hear it slide. We quickly readjusted it and haven't had any problems. Thanks for the question. I hope this answer helps.
Very Nice tips. It’s easy to forget about that compartment. I just got an idea from your shower Idea. The hot and cold hoses under the back for winterizing would make a shower with hot water possible. Rinse mud off you or the dog. 🤔
I am trading in my 2022 Gulfstream vintage cruiser 19 ERD for one of these I don’t know if I just bought a lemon but the workmanship quality has been a nightmare for me and I paid 28,000 for my RV and it’s not worth it. So luckily camping world is gonna trade me out into a 2023 model of this RV and I just want to go back to simple. This will be my seventh RV that I’ve owned and I just not happy with the vintage cruiser model I have.
I have seen several RVs that don't have it. Having said that, many people are advocating putting a PVC pipe on the bottom for the stinking Slinky. I think it is probably a good idea.
I recently bought the same camper, and bought a similar mattress. I’m a widow doing all this stuff by myself, and while I’m not in terrible shape, unboxing the mattress and setting it up was quite a workout! I video’d it, but opted NOT to add that part to my video. 😂
Thank you for the question/comment. You are not the first person ask about links to the things I buy. There are several reasons why I typically do not include links. 1. Virtually ALL of the things I buy, I get from Amazon. I almost never buy from a company not on Amazon. 2. If it wasn’t from Amazon, it was probably at Lowe’s, Home Depot, or Harbor Freight. 3. Amazon links change often. Our videos will sometimes last for years. 4. Amazon sellers constantly change their product or price, or even the colors they offer. Doing so generates a new and different link. 5. Amazon will often have dozens of the same device or product. By Googling it, you might find the same item for less then I paid for it. A good example of that is battery cutoff switch. There are many to choose from. 6. Some manufacturers will upgrade their products yearly. (A good example of that would be the combination RV door locks.)
I don't know. We get almost everything from Amazon. If i find it, I will post it here. Thanks for the question. I think it was called GMG or Genmaigou.
It is such a small space that I never thought much about it. I googled the question and found several places that list it at 8000 btus. Does that help you? www.rvusa.com/rv-guide/2024-dutchmen-coleman-17b-travel-trailer-specs-tr64098
We bought our camper in 2022, like it, until I found theirs only 2 outlets on the same side and maybe 4 ft. Away from each other , there is no outlet in the bathroom or by the table, the storage one door and no spring on the door, the queen bed is horrible no way out only one way, need a new design. Need an oven. I'm waiting for the new up grate like everything else for a starter.
-Thank you for your great comments. We agree with you all the way…sort of. What I mean is, we tried to make it better with some simple upgrades. -Yes, the outlet placement is terrible. We solved this a little, by easily installing outlets in the cabinet with the radio. They are now two 12v outlets. One is just like you car lighter outlet and the other is two USB outlets. We can now recharge a phone or iPad right there on the table. By getting a small inverter we can also have 110 if needed in an emergency, even if we are running just off the battery. -The “Teddy Bear” mattress is useless. We first purchased a thick memory foam mattress, and it was OK, but really hard to makeup. A fitted sheet wanted to curl up at the corners. A few months ago we purchased a real Queen size mattress on Amazon. We love it. It hangs over that almost useless shelf at the foot of the bed, a little, but honestly it is no big deal. This weekend we are actually re-configuring the dinette to allow a little more space. (BTW- The 17R helped the problem of getting out of the bed, a little, by switching things around. You can see this on our channel. All of these things are talked about in some of our videos. After this weekend I hope you will check back about our redesign of the Dinette. This might help a little. -Mattress - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-exnKuxVbedo.html Outlets- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9ysBHdmJSv4.html
