Step By Step Setup Of A SUNSUN Canister Filter , Its A Must For The Aquarium Fish Going In This Tank
So I need to setup a much larger form of filtration for this tank because big things are about to happen! Join me as I go step by step on setting up the Sunsun HW-304B Canister Filter. The pros for me on this filter is the price and its effective filtration capabilities. The cons are the hoses are too stiff and the motor seal can leak down the road. All in all I like this filter and I will continue to use the because of the price and its ability.

Foam media at the bottom, bio in the middle, carbon on top. I’ve been doing this for many years and I found this to be the best setup for a good cycle and low maintenance

I've been running 3 SunSuns for quite some time, no issues, just quiet filtering. I stopped using poly fill because is was getting all over and sticking to my sponges which I like to rinse and re-use, however, I do like the way you use it to fill in the gaps.

I run two of them on a "piggy back" system. The outlet on one flows into the inlet of the other then back to tank. This gets alot of clutter outa the tank Works well even if i turn power off at filter. Have the first two trays with foam pads then the following six with 10kg of media. Tanks to PondGuru for the mechanical before biological idea

I Love my Sunsun 404B which moves a lot of water, has a 9wate U/V filter and holds a tone of media and is very quite. I now use it with a Cascade 1000 as a compliment

If the hoses for the Sun-Sun filter are to stiff throw them in your dryer for 30secs to a minute they will be much more pliable and easier to work with.

I run 3 sunsun 304’s on my 150 gallon and I love them. I did experience a leak on one of them but replaced the o-ring ($7 on Amazon) and I’m good to go. However I do keep them in a tote just for safety. For the price they can’t be beat. Just recently came across your channel and your videos have been very interesting and helpful. Thanks for doing what you do and keep up the good work!

@@richardportelli1983 Pondguru is also wrong. WHy ? He puts all mechanical filtraton on the boton, that not good, chause after cleaning the mechanical filter after 1-2 months you have to put all filter out of water. Tahan all anaeobic bacteria die. bye bye full cycle

Simon wrong. He uses Biohome ultimate. The only biological that allows a FULL cycle of aerobic and anaerobic. For an even better setup, he advocates the use of a small prefilter for all your mechanical so you can leave the biological alone. Ben Ochart also utilizes this and only rinses his biological once a year. Both of those guys are fish guru’s so I’m pretty sure they know what they’re doing. Good luck.

I've seen people put their hoses in the dryer to warm it up and straighten them. I like putting the polyfill around the media I'll do that next canister cleaning. Thanks for the info.

The seals can be replaced very cheap on Ebay,also soak the hoses in hot water it makes them easier to work with and install on fittings

I have two 302, two 303, and one 304 They work very good but have had many problems with the 302 from leaking seals to impeller problems. On the 303 and 304 have had no problems at all they all have been running for over a year. It seem the larger one 304 need less cleaning that the others...

I use the poly fil in my trays & love it. I use it instead of filters. I hate the sunsun canister 304B I have to clean it every week or two. I get alot of air bubbles in the tubes and have tried shaking the tank, primed it over and over and still nothing works. I have 2 big turtles & 6 goldfish & 6 small tilapia fish in a 125 tank. Had I known this was going to happen I would not had bought it.

Hi Susan, that really stinks that the filter was giving you so many issues. I have had my share of issues as well with sunsun, but for the price I am still using them. My issues have been the motor orings wore out and caused the filter to leak badly. It is frustrating that is for sure. Polyfil is amazing stuff! The Sun sun is a good filter, in mine I just use coarse foam, polyfill, polyfill, bio Home ultimate. The bio Home is awesome stuff imo. A bit hard to find in the states. Once it’s seeded it works great.

Happy with mine so far it hasn't started leaking yet I had not heard about that happening. Now I'm wondering how long until it let's go and whether or not I need to put something under it to catch the water if I don't notice it when it starts happening

I would put it in a tote just to be safe, I got lucky that it leaked in my fishroom which is concrete floors.

@@inventoryking this is my biggest fear as well as it’s in my living room, second floor, with hardwood floors. Is there a way that I can check on that seal? How do I replace the seal? Should I only keep the intake just beneath the surface so that if there is a leak I don’t have a tank full of water on the floor needing to replace my subfloor? Just bought one so I’m nervous.

If you are trying to establish a new tank, the UV light on can be bad. The chemipure does things like: Removes dissolved organics, Filters out coppers, metals, odors and phenol. Keeps pH stable and constant

All of the mechanical filtration should be in the bottom trey. All the other trays should be filled with the bio-filtration. White Pumice is the best bio-filtration for the canister filters which is all the Sea-Chem Matrix is. I use both the poly-fil and the SunSun filters and they are a good combination. The Poly-fil batting is the ether than the Poly-Fil fiber. It comes in easy to cut sheets as opposed to being loose and messy. No chemical filtration needs to be done in the filter because all chemical filtration with the exception of activated carbon will kill the beneficial bacteria. A good RU-vidd to watch is The Pond Guru. He demonstrates the most efficient way to set up a canister filter. A easier way to prime the SunSun filters is to fill them up about 75%-80% with aquarium water then put the cover on and prime it. After a few pumps it’s ready to turn on. Don’t forget to lubricate the seals every time or every other time you maintain your filter. This helps to prevent them from cracking and thus the filter leaking. Good luck with you filter and your tank!

edwardsdeacon actually Seachem Matrix is just pumice stone. Not the best at all. Biohome Ultimate is the best. Check out Pondguru’s videos where he compares media under 300x magnification. Hands down Biohome can’t be beat. But it’s not cheap. You get what you pay for. With a prefilter attached you never have to touch it at all?

I don’t use polyfill anymore. Too messy. I’d rather spend a few extra bucks and get the pads. Cut to size and bam good to go. Bio home is hands down the best, but pumice still works well. Just takes longer to get started. And it doesn’t have as much surface area for anaerobic bacteria. But pumice is still good. But biohome is next level. And I’ve felt with stiff hoses with ehiem, topfin and other canisters. So the sun sun didn’t seem much difference. Sun sun you get a ton of bang for your buck.

Yeah they are known for that. It is the worst. I have replaced the motor oring. It connects the motor section to the canister section.

I dont know anyone who uses those Bio Balls.. And long as the handles are pretty flat you should be good.. If you are like our gracious host and have a big A$$ fish room... I dont think you can go wrong with using a fleet of SunSuns. The price is right. Thanks Man.

Hey I have a question I have the same canister you do. Initially, my tank was cloudy (brown) and when I received my canister, I successfully connected it and it ran all all night. My tank looks the same. It doesn't seem to help at all. How long does it normally take?

That is really strange, it should have been MUCH better. Are the hoses hooked up in the correct direction? Also, I buy PolyFil from craft stores. Its 100% polyester that is used as polisher. I would pick some of that up, put it on each tray on the top and run it. Also, check the hoses so they are hooked up correctly.

I have used a SunSun 304B for several months in my 100 gallon tank, that houses my red-eared sliders. When I did maintenance on the filter today, I could not get water to keep from pouring out where the top hose housing & the bottom of the canister meet! The enclosed instruction manual said to use vaseline on all of the "O" rings. We did that. We cleaned those stiff hoses (their inflexibility is one of my "cons", too!), and they ran clean. Since turtles produce a thick, disgusting, sludgy output, there is no saving the filter medium. It was all changed to new medium, and the trays were inserted at the proper height. Where did I go wrong? My unit didn't leak a bit before this cleaning, and there was nothing I could do to keep water from shooting everywhere from the horizontal gap where the top meets the bottom. Anybody have a similar experience? All suggestions will be greatly appreciated! From Rosie, the RES 🐢 p.s. Your polyfill idea is brilliant! I'm sold!

Hi Edgar, I would do 4 of these or some fluval fx6 with this. On my 220 gallon tank, I have 2 fluval fx6 and 1 sunsun hw304b. So with yours being bigger, I would add at least 1 more.

Pure Silicone lube and that oring would last at least two years, if applied every six months. I’m more compelled to keep my trays dedicated to one process, like strictly mechanical, then bio, to chemical , that order bottom to top on sunsun.

Hi good video but I would like to suggest something to you. Be more focused on how your media trays are connecting together. This is important to prevent water bypassing the filtration process. I noticed you stuffed the hell out of your media baskets and it did not look to me like they were connecting together correctly forming a nice seal with each other so to speak. Go to video where you added the water and watch the baskets rise. Im sure that they did not fall back into place with each other thus giving you water bypass.

I would try to have it lower by any amount. I have one that is a few inches lower and it works fine. Not sure about above never did that. Never seen that done. Hope it works out

Nothing actually. I just removed the spray bar and point the outlet up some to break the surface.

Canister filters leak I had mine leak then thecg Hose came off 3 floods , I shit the sob with my gun and burned it in the trash. I use 2 350 bio wheel filters my tank is always spotkess. . I will never never nerver use a canister filter again one good thing canister filters do is burn. And it made good target practice

I found this filter and all the others designed like it (like the mainland version) to be sheer garbage. I now use the FX6 and can't believe I wasted so much time with the likes of the Sun Sun. Do yourself a favor grab a FX6 or FX5 and be done with it.

inventoryking never use Vaseline on rubber O rings. It degrades the rubber over time and leads to leaking.

I just took a very small flat head screwdriver and gently pried the cap off . You can not twist it off there is a grove that the top goes over.

I know tht others have already mentioned it but I also feel that you have set this up incorrectly. The order of filtering should always be mechanical, biological, chemical. You should be straining all the suspended solids from the water before it ever reaches your biological media. You have put a coarse pad in the bottom of the first tray and then your biological media directly on top. Yes, the coarse pad will remove the larger solids but anything smaller is going straight onto your biological media which means the pores in the media will very quickly become clogged with the solids that your coarse pad missed. In my opinion there is an inherent design fault with most of these canisters, not just the SunSun, it would be far better if the flow was top to bottom rather than how it is currently set up, bottom to top. If it ran top to bottom you could put all the mechanical filtration in the top tray - this is the one that is going to need most maintenance as the filter pads become blocked. You could then service the filter just by removing the top tray and leave the biological trays where they are. If your mechanical filtration is working effectively there should be no debris reaching your biological media and they could be left alone for months. Just my opinion.

My suggestion to you, just use first tray in bottom as a mechanical filtration and second tray should Biological media and the rest can be chemical. Using fine foam in each tray wont be effective. Watch more video from others.

inventoryking I dont know Ployfil but that white foam is fine foam. The best way filtration in SuSun is use Corse foam +medium foam and fine foam the bottom tray. This tray would be your mechanic filtration. This way is the best.
